These are the informal notes of two seminars held at the Universita` di Roma "La Sapienza", and at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa in Spring and Autumn 1997. We discuss in detail the content of the parts of Givental's paper dealing with mirror symmetry for projective complete intersections.
This article accompanies my June 1998 seminaire Bourbaki talk on Givental's work. After a quick review of descendent integrals in Gromov-Witten theory, I discuss Givental's formalism relating hypergeometric series to solutions of quantum differential equations arising from hypersurfaces in projective space. A particular case of this relationship is a proof of the Mirror prediction for the numbers of rational curves on the Calabi-Yau quintic 3-fold. The approach taken here is entirely algebro-geometric and relies upon a localization formula on the moduli space of stable genus 0 maps to projecti…
We use mirror formulas for the stable quotients analogue of Givental's J-function for twisted projective invariants obtained in a previous paper to obtain mirror formulas for the analogues of the double and triple Givental's J-functions (with descendants at all marked points) in this setting. We then observe that the genus 0 stable quotients invariants need not satisfy the divisor, string, or dilaton relations of the Gromov-Witten theory, but they do possess the integrality properties of the genus 0 three-point Gromov-Witten invariants of Calabi-Yau manifolds. We also relate the stable quotien…
We modify Gross's construction of mirror symmetry for $\mathbb{P}^2$ by introducing a descendent tropical Landau-Ginzburg potential. The period integrals of this potential compute a modification of Givental's J-function, explicitly encoding a larger sector of the big phase space. As a byproduct of this construction, new tropical methods for computing certain descendent Gromov-Witten invariants are defined.
We formulate a generalization of Givental-Kim's quantum hyperplane principle. This is applied to compute the quantum cohomology of a Calabi-Yau 3-fold defined as the rank 4 locus of a general skew-symmetric 7x7 matrix with coeffisients in P^6. The computation verifies the mirror symmetry predictions of Rødland in math.AG/9801092.
We prove a Givental-style mirror theorem for toric Deligne--Mumford stacks X. This determines the genus-zero Gromov--Witten invariants of X in terms of an explicit hypergeometric function, called the I-function, that takes values in the Chen--Ruan orbifold cohomology of X.
We show that the mirror constructions of Greene-Plesser, Berglund-Hubsch, Batryev-Borsov, Givental and Hori-Vafa can be expressed in terms of what we call dual fans. To do this, we associate to a pair of dual fans a pair of toric Landau-Ginzburg models, and we describe a process by which each of the mirror constructions listed also produces a pair of toric Landau-Ginzburg models. Replacing mirror pairs by toric Landau-Ginzburg models is reversible, and our main result is the dual fan models and the mirror pairs models coincide.
The moduli space of stable quotients introduced by Marian-Oprea-Pandharipande provides a natural compactification of the space of morphisms from nonsingular curves to a nonsingular projective variety and carries a natural virtual class. We show that the analogue of Givental's J-function for the resulting twisted projective invariants is described by the same mirror hypergeometric series as the corresponding Gromov-Witten invariants (which arise from the moduli space of stable maps), but without the mirror transform (in the Calabi-Yau case). This implies that the stable quotients and Gromov-Wit…
Given a smooth projective variety $X$ with a smooth nef divisor $D$ and a positive integer $r$, we construct an $I$-function, an explicit slice of Givental's Lagrangian cone, for Gromov--Witten theory of the root stack $X_{D,r}$. As an application, we also obtain an $I$-function for relative Gromov--Witten theory following the relation between relative and orbifold Gromov--Witten invariants.
We explain how A. Givental's mirror symmetric family to the type A flag variety and its proposed generalization to partial flag varieties by Batyrev, Ciocan-Fontanine, Kim and van Straten relate to the Peterson variety Y in SL_n/B. We then use this theory to describe the totally nonnegative part of Y.
We show that (quantum) D-modules of Givental type on affine flag varieties are transformed to D-modules of Beilinson-Drinfeld type on $n$-reduced Sato Grassmannians via affine Miura transformation.
We prove the Landau-Ginzburg mirror symmetry conjecture between invertible quasi-homogeneous polynomial singularities at all genera. That is, we show that the FJRW theory (LG A-model) of such a polynomial is equivalent to the Saito-Givental theory (LG B-model) of the mirror polynomial.
We give a new proof of Givental's mirror theorem for toric manifolds using shift operators of equivariant parameters. The proof is almost tautological: it gives an A-model construction of the I-function and the mirror map. It also works for non-compact or non-semipositive toric manifolds.
In this paper we propose and discuss a mirror construction for complete intersections in partial flag manifolds $F(n_1, ..., n_l, n)$. This construction includes our previous mirror construction for complete intersection in Grassmannians and the mirror construction of Givental for complete flag manifolds. The key idea of our construction is a degeneration of $F(n_1, ..., n_l, n)$ to a certain Gorenstein toric Fano variety $P(n_1, ..., n_l, n)$ which has been investigated by Gonciulea and Lakshmibai. We describe a natural small crepant desingularization of $P(n_1, ..., n_l, n)$ and prove a gene…
Period Integrals (Givental's I-function) of Calabi-Yau Hypersurface in $CP^{N-1}$ and Intersection Numbers of Moduli Space of Quasimaps from $CP^1$ with Two Marked Points to $CP^{N-1}$
Borcea-Voisin threefolds provided some of the first examples of mirror pairs in the Hodge-theoretic sense, but their mirror symmetry at the quantum level have not previously been shown. We prove a Givental-style quantum mirror theorem for certain Borcea-Voisin threefolds: by means of certain birational models, we show that their Gromov-Witten J-functions are related by a mirror map to solutions of the multi-parameter Picard-Fuchs equations coming from the variation of Hodge structures of their mirror partners.
We show that a generating function for open $r$-spin enumerative invariants produces a universal unfolding of the polynomial $x^r$. Further, the coordinates parametrizing this universal unfolding are flat coordinates on the Frobenius manifold associated to the Landau-Ginzburg model $(\mathbb{C},x^r)$ via Saito-Givental theory. This result provides evidence for the same phenomenon to occur in higher dimension, proven in a sequel paper.
This is a brief summary of our works [arXiv:1112.4063, arXiv:1201.4501] on constructing higher genus B-model from perturbative quantization of BCOV theory. We analyze Givental's symplectic loop space formalism in the context of B-model geometry on Calabi-Yau manifolds, and explain the Fock space construction via the renormalization techniques of gauge theory. We also give a physics interpretation of the Virasoro constraints as the symmetry of the classical BCOV action functional, and discuss the Virasoro constraints in the quantum theory.
In this paper, we prove the mirror symmetry conjecture between the Saito-Givental theory of exceptional unimodular singularities on Landau-Ginzburg B-side and the Fan-Jarvis-Ruan-Witten theory of their mirror partners on Landau-Ginzburg A-side. On the B-side, we compute the genus-zero generating function from a perturbative formula of primitive forms introduced by the first three authors recently. This computation matches the orbifold-Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch and WDVV calculations in FJRW theory on the A-side. The coincidence of the full data at all genera is established by reconstruction tec…
Givental's Lagrangian cone $\mathcal{L}_X$ is a Lagrangian submanifold of a symplectic vector space which encodes the genus-zero Gromov-Witten invariants of $X$. Building on work of Braverman, Coates has obtained the Lagrangian cone as the push-forward of a certain class on the moduli space of stable maps to $X \times \mathbb{P}^1$. This provides a conceptual description for an otherwise mysterious change of variables called the dilaton shift. In this note we recast this construction in its natural context, namely the moduli space of stable maps to $X \times \mathbb{P}^1$ relative the divisor …
We consider the Grassmannian X of (n-k)-dimensional subspaces of an n-dimensional complex vector space. We describe a `mirror dual' Landau-Ginzburg model for X consisting of the complement of a particular anti-canonical divisor in a Langlands dual Grassmannian together with a superpotential expressed succinctly in terms of Plücker coordinates. First of all, we show this Landau-Ginzburg model to be isomorphic to the one proposed by the second author. Secondly we show it to be a partial compactification of the Landau-Ginzburg model defined in the 1990s by Eguchi, Hori, and Xiong. Finally we cons…
A simple elliptic singularity of type $E_N^{(1,1)}$ ($N=6,7,8$) can be described in terms of a marginal deformation of an invertible polynomial $W$. In the papers \cite{KS} and \cite{MR} the authors proved a mirror symmetry statement for some particular choices of $W$ and used it to prove quasi-modularity of Gromov-Witten invariants for certain elliptic orbifold $\mathbb{P}^1$s. However, the choice of the polynomial $W$ and its marginal deformation $ϕ_μ$ are not unique. In this paper, we investigate the global mirror symmetry phenomenon for the one-parameter family $W+σϕ_μ$. In each case the m…

Let X be a smooth complex projective variety, and let Y in X be a smooth very ample hypersurface such that -K_Y is nef. Using the technique of relative Gromov-Witten invariants, we give a new short and geometric proof of (a version of) the "mirror formula", i.e. we show that the generating function of the genus zero 1-point Gromov-Witten invariants of Y can be obtained from that of X by a certain change of variables (the so-called "mirror transformation"). Moreover, we use the same techniques to give a similar expression for the (virtual) numbers of degree-d plane rational curves meeting a smo…
We give a description of the relative Hilbert scheme of lines in the Dwork pencil of quintic threefolds. We describe the corresponding relative Hilbert scheme associated to the mirror family of quintic threefolds.
We construct and study the theory of relative quasimaps in genus zero, in the spirit of Gathmann. When $X$ is a smooth toric variety and $Y$ is a smooth very ample hypersurface in $X$, we produce a virtual class on the moduli space of relative quasimaps to $(X,Y)$, which we use to define relative quasimap invariants. We obtain a recursion formula which expresses each relative invariant in terms of invariants of lower tangency, and apply this formula to derive a quantum Lefschetz theorem for quasimaps, expressing the restricted quasimap invariants of $Y$ in terms of those of $X$. Finally, we sh…
We provide an enumerative meaning of the mirror maps for toric Calabi-Yau orbifolds in terms of relative Gromov-Witten invariants of the toric compactifications. As a consequence, we obtain an equality between relative Gromov-Witten invariants and open Gromov-Witten invariants. Therefore, the instanton corrected mirrors for toric Calabi-Yau orbifolds can be constructed using relative Gromov-Witten invariants.
A method for computing the open string mirror map and superpotential for noncompact Calabi-Yaus, following the physical computations of Lerche and Mayr, is presented. It is also shown that the obvious extension of these techniques to the compact case is not consistent. As an example, the local CP^2 case is worked out in 2 ways.
A decorated surface S is a surface with a finite set of special points on the boundary, considered modulo isotopy. Let G be a split reductive group. A pair (G, S) gives rise to a moduli space A(G, S), closely related to the space of G-local systems on S. It has a positive structure. So the set of its integral tropical points is defined. We introduce a rational positive function W on A(G, S), the potential. The condition that its tropicalisation is non-negative determines its subset. For SL(2), we recover the set of integral laminations on S. We prove that when S is a disc with n special points…
We construct a compactification of the moduli of toric pairs by using ideas from mirror symmetry. The secondary fan $Σ(Q)$ is used in [Ale02] to parametrize degenerations of toric pairs. It is also used in [CLS11] to control the variation of GIT. We verify the prediction of mirror symmetry that $Σ(Q)$ for the moduli of toric pairs is equal to the Mori fan of the relative minimal models of the mirror family. As a result, we give an explicit construction of the compactification $\mathscr{T}_Q$ of the moduli of toric pairs which is the normalization of the compactification in [Ale02] and [Ols08].
The Remodeling Conjecture proposed by Bouchard-Klemm-Marino-Pasquetti [arXiv:0709.1453, arXiv:0807.0597] relates all genus open and closed Gromov-Witten invariants of a semi-projective toric Calabi-Yau 3-manifolds/3-orbifolds to the Eynard-Orantin invariants of the mirror curve of the toric Calabi-Yau 3-fold. In this paper, we present a proof of the Remodeling Conjecture for open-closed orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of an arbitrary affine toric Calabi-Yau 3-orbifold relative to a framed Aganagic-Vafa Lagrangian brane. This can be viewed as an all genus open-closed mirror symmetry for affin…
We prove Homological Mirror Symmetry for a smooth d-dimensional Calabi-Yau hypersurface in projective space, for any d > 2 (for example, d = 3 is the quintic three-fold). The main techniques involved in the proof are: the construction of an immersed Lagrangian sphere in the `d-dimensional pair of pants'; the introduction of the `relative Fukaya category', and an understanding of its grading structure; a description of the behaviour of this category with respect to branched covers (via an `orbifold' Fukaya category); a Morse-Bott model for the relative Fukaya category that allows one to make ex…
We use a relative Fourier-Mukai transform on elliptic K3 surfaces $X$ to describe mirror symmetry. The action of this Fourier-Mukai transform on the cohomology ring of $X$ reproduces relative T-duality and provides an infinitesimal isometry of the moduli space of algebraic structures on $X$ which, in view of the triviality of the quantum cohomology of K3 surfaces, can be interpreted as mirror symmetry.
We define and study the existence of very stable Higgs bundles on Riemann surfaces, how it implies a precise formula for the multiplicity of the very stable components of the global nilpotent cone and its relationship to mirror symmetry. The main ingredients are the Bialynicki-Birula theory of ${\mathbb C}^*$-actions on semiprojective varieties, ${\mathbb C}^*$ characters of indices of ${\mathbb C}^*$-equivariant coherent sheaves, Hecke transformation for Higgs bundles, relative Fourier-Mukai transform along the Hitchin fibration, hyperholomorphic structures on universal bundles and cominuscul…
In this paper, we exhibit a formula relating punctured Gromov-Witten invariants used by Gross and Siebert to 2-point relative/logarithmic Gromov-Witten invariants with one point-constraint for any smooth log Calabi-Yau pair $(W,D)$. Denote by $N_{a,b}$ the number of rational curves in $W$ meeting $D$ in two points, one with contact order $a$ and one with contact order $b$ with a point constraint. (Such numbers are defined within relative or logarithmic Gromov-Witten theory). We then apply a modified version of deformation to the normal cone technique and the degeneration formula developed by K…
Compactifications with fluxes and branes motivate us to study various enumerative invariants of Calabi-Yau manifolds. In this paper, we study non-perturbative corrections depending on both open and closed string moduli for a class of compact Calabi-Yau manifolds in general dimensions. Our analysis is based on the methods using relative cohomology and generalized hypergeometric system. For the simplest example of compact Calabi-Yau fivefold, we explicitly derive the associated Picard-Fuchs differential equations and compute the quantum corrections in terms of the open and closed flat coordinate…
We prove the Topological Mirror Symmetry Conjecture by Hausel-Thaddeus for smooth moduli spaces of Higgs bundles of type $\operatorname{SL}_n$ and $\operatorname{PGL}_n$. More precisely, we establish an equality of stringy Hodge numbers for certain pairs of algebraic orbifolds generically fibred into dual abelian varieties. Our proof utilises p-adic integration relative to the fibres, and interprets canonical gerbes present on these moduli spaces as characters on the Hitchin fibres using Tate duality. Furthermore we prove for $d$ coprime to $n$, that the number of rank $n$ Higgs bundles of deg…
We establish a $\mathbb{Z}[[t_1,\ldots, t_n]]$-linear derived equivalence between the relative Fukaya category of the 2-torus with $n$ distinct marked points and the derived category of perfect complexes on the $n$-Tate curve. Specialising to $t_1= \ldots =t_n=0$ gives a $\mathbb{Z}$-linear derived equivalence between the Fukaya category of the $n$-punctured torus and the derived category of perfect complexes on the standard (Néron) $n$-gon. We prove that this equivalence extends to a $\mathbb{Z}$-linear derived equivalence between the wrapped Fukaya category of the $n$-punctured torus and the…
This paper explores a refinement of homological mirror symmetry which relates exact symplectic topology to arithmetic algebraic geometry. We establish a derived equivalence of the Fukaya category of the 2-torus, relative to a basepoint, with the category of perfect complexes of coherent sheaves on the Tate curve over the "formal disc" Spec Z[[q]]. It specializes to a derived equivalence, over Z, of the Fukaya category of the punctured torus with perfect complexes on the curve y^2+xy=x^3 over Spec Z, the central fibre of the Tate curve; and, over the "punctured disc" Spec Z((q)), to an integral…
