In the present work we describe 3-dimensional complex SL_2-varieties where the generic SL_2-orbit is a surface. We apply this result to classify the minimal 3-dimensional projective varieties with Picard-number 1 where a semisimple group acts such that the generic orbits are 2-dimensional.
This is an ingredient of the classification [Keb98, math.AG/9805042] of the 3-dimensional relatively minimal quasihomogeneous varieties where the automorphism group is not solvable.
We give a classification of embedded smooth projective varieties swept out by rational homogeneous varieties whose Picard number and codimension are one.
In this paper we improve our previous results on classification of groups of points on abelian varieties over finite fields. The classification is given in terms of the Weil polynomial of abelian varieties in a given $k$-isogeny class.
We complete Satake's classification of Kuga fiber varieties by showing that if a representation $ρ$ of a hermitian algebraic group satisfies Satake's necessary conditions, then some multiple of $ρ$ defines a Kuga fiber variety.
A classification of double flag varieties of complexity 0 and 1 is obtained. An application of this problem to decomposing tensor products of irreducible representations of semisimple Lie groups is considered.
The geometric and algebraic properties of smooth projective varieties with 1-regular structure sheaf are well understood, and the complete classification of these varieties is a classical result. The aim of this paper is to study the next case: smooth projective varieties with 2-regular structure sheaf. First, we give a classification of such varieties using adjunction mappings. Next, under suitable conditions, we study the syzygies of section rings of those varieties to understand the structure of the Betti tables, and show a sharp bound for Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity.
We classify the polarized symplectic automorphisms of Fano varieties of smooth cubic fourfolds (equipped with the Plücker polarization) and study the fixed loci.
Fano varieties are 'atomic pieces' of algebraic varieties, the shapes that can be defined by polynomial equations. We describe the role of computation and database methods in the construction and classification of Fano varieties, with an emphasis on three-dimensional Fano varieties with mild singularities called Q-Fano threefolds. The classification of Q-Fano threefolds has been open for several decades, but there has been significant recent progress. These advances combine computational algebraic geometry and large-scale data analysis with new ideas that originated in theoretical physics.
The present paper is devoted to generalizing, inside the class of projective toric varieties, the classification [Batyrev91], performed by Batyrev in 1991 for smooth complete toric varieties, to the singular $Q$--factorial case. Moreover, in the first part of the paper the Kleinschmidt classification of smooth complete toric varieties of Picard number 2 [Kleinschmidt] is revised.
A Bagnera-de Franchis variety $X = A/G$ is the quotient of an abelian variety $A$ by a free action of a finite cyclic group $G \subset Bihol(A)$, which does not contain only translations. Constructing explicit polarizations and using a method introduced by F. Catanese, we classify split Bagnera-de Franchis varieties up to complex conjugation in dimensions $\leq 4$.
The purpose of this paper is to give basic tools for the classification of nonsingular toric Fano varieties by means of the notions of primitive collections and primitive relations due to Batyrev. By using them we can easily deal with equivariant blow-ups and blow-downs, and get an easy criterion to determine whether a given nonsingular toric variety is a Fano variety or not. As applications of these results, we get a toric version of a theorem of Mori, and can classify, in principle, all nonsingular toric Fano varieties obtained from a given nonsingular toric Fano variety by finite succession…
We classify holomorphic as well as algebraic torus equivariant principal $G$-bundles over a nonsingular toric variety $X$, where $G$ is a complex linear algebraic group. It is shown that any such bundle over an affine, nonsingular toric variety admits a trivialization in equivariant sense. We also obtain some splitting results.
We perform a systematic study of Gushel-Mukai varieties---quadratic sections of linear sections of cones over the Grassmannian Gr(2,5). This class of varieties includes Clifford general curves of genus 6, Brill-Noether general polarized K3 surfaces of genus 6, prime Fano threefolds of genus 6, and their higher-dimensional analogues. We establish an intrinsic characterization of normal Gushel-Mukai varieties in terms of their excess conormal sheaves, which leads to a new proof of the classification theorem of Gushel and Mukai. We give a description of isomorphism classes of Gushel-Mukai varieti…
The main purpose of this paper is to show that OADP varieties stand at an important crossroad of various main streets in different disciplines like projective geometry, birational geometry and algebra. This is a good reason for studying and classifying them. Main specific results are: (a) the classification of all OADP surfaces (regardless to their smoothness); (b) the classification of a relevant class of normal OADP varieties of any dimension, which includes interesting examples like lagrangian grassmannians. Following [PR], the equivalence of the classification in (b) with the one of quadro…
In this paper, we give the complete classification of full exceptional collections on smooth toric Fano threefolds and fourfolds with Picard rank two. To be precise, we give a partial answer to the conjecture in \cite{Kuz} and \cite{LYY}: we provide all the exceptional collections of maximal length and prove that they are in fact full exceptional collections.
In this paper, we obtain a complete classification of smooth toric Fano varieties equipped with extremal contractions which contract divisors to curves for any dimension. As an application, we obtain a complete classification of smooth projective toric varieties which can be equivariantly blown-up to Fano along curves.
We classify principal bundles over anti-affine schemes with affine and commutative structural group. We show that this yields the classification of quasi-abelian varieties over a field k (i.e., group k-schemes with no non constant global functions). The interest of this result is given by the fact that the classification of smooth group k-schemes is reduced to the classification of quasi-abelian varieties and of certain affine group schemes.
We give a complete classification of anisotropic projective homogeneous varieties of dimension less than 6 up to motivic isomorphism. We give several criteria for anisotropic flag varieties of type A_n to have isomorphic motives.
A two-orbit variety is a normal complete complex algebraic variety on which a reductive complex algebraic group acts with exactly two orbits. The aim of this paper is to give the classification of all two-orbit varieties and to prove Luna's conjecture, namely that two-orbit varieties are spherical.
In this note we give a classification of all affine normal $SL_2$-varieties containing an open dense orbit over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Such a classification was first obtained by Popov. Here we provide an alternative approach.
Normal toric varieties over a field or a discrete valuation ring are classified by rational polyhedral fans. We generalize this classification to normal toric varieties over an arbitrary valuation ring of rank one. The proof is based on a generalization of Sumihiro's theorem to this non-noetherian setting. These toric varieties play an important role for tropicalizations.
Let $X$ be a complete toric variety equipped with the action of a torus $T$ and $G$ a reductive algebraic group, defined over an algebraically closed field $K$. We introduce the notion of a compatible $Σ$--filtered algebra associated to $X$, generalizing the notion of a compatible $Σ$--filtered vector space due to Klyachko, where $Σ$ denotes the fan of $X$. We combine Klyachko's classification of $T$--equivariant vector bundles on $X$ with Nori's Tannakian approach to principal $G$--bundles, to give an equivalence of categories between $T$--equivariant principal $G$--bundles on $X$ and certain…
We show that the smooth horizontal Schubert subvarieties of a rational homogeneous variety $G/P$ are homogeneously embedded cominuscule $G'/P'$, and are classified by subdiagrams of a Dynkin diagram. This generalizes the classification of smooth Schubert varieties in cominuscule $G/P$.
In the setting of strict wonderful varieties we answer positively to Luna's conjecture, saying that wonderful varieties are classified by combinatorial objects, the so-called spherical systems. In particular, we prove that strict wonderful varieties are mostly obtained from symmetric spaces, spherical nilpotent orbits or model spaces. To make the paper self-contained as much as possible, we shall gather some known results on these families and more generally on wonderful varieties.
In this article, we investigate the geometry of reductive group actions on algebraic varieties. Given a connected reductive group $G$, we elaborate on a geometric and combinatorial approach based on Luna-Vust theory to describe every normal $G$-variety with spherical orbits. This description encompasses the classical case of spherical varieties and the theory of $\mathbb{T}$-varieties recently introduced by Altmann, Hausen, and Süss.
We define Enriques varieties as a higher dimensional generalization of Enriques surfaces and construct examples by using fixed point free automorphisms on generalized Kummer varieties. We also classify all automorphisms of generalized Kummer varieties that come from an automorphism of the underlying abelian surface.
We explain a web of Sarkisov links that overlies the classification of Fano weighted projective spaces in dimensions 3 and 4, extending results of Prokhorov.
A $n$-dimensional Gorenstein toric Fano variety $X$ is called Del Pezzo variety if the anticanonical class $-K_X$ is a $(n-1)$-multiple of a Cartier divisor. Our purpose is to give a complete biregular classfication of Gorenstein toric Del Pezzo varieties in arbitrary dimension $n \geq 2$. We show that up to isomorphism there exist exactly 37 Gorenstein toric Del Pezzo varieties of dimension $n$ which are not cones over $(n-1)$-dimensional Gorenstein toric Del Pezzo varieties. Our results are closely related to the classification of all Minkowski sum decompositions of reflexive polygons due to…
We classified prime $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano $3$-folds $X$ with only $1/2(1,1,1)$-singularities and with $h^{0}(-K_{X})\geq 4$ a long time ago. The classification was undertaken by blowing up each $X$ at one $1/2(1,1,1)$-singularity and constructing a Sarkisov link. The purpose of this paper is to reveal the geometries behind the Sarkisov links for $X$ in 5 classes. The main result asserts that any $X$ in the 5 classes can be embedded as linear sections into bigger dimensional $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano varieties called key varieties, where the key varieties are constructed by extending partially the Sarkisov…
Classically, an indecomposable class $R$ in the cone of effective curves on a K3 surface $X$ is representable by a smooth rational curve if and only if $R^2=-2$. We prove a higher-dimensional generalization conjectured by Hassett and Tschinkel: for a holomorphic symplectic variety $M$ deformation equivalent to a Hilbert scheme of $n$ points on a K3 surface, an extremal curve class $R\in H_2(M,\mathbb{Z})$ in the Mori cone is the line in a Lagrangian $n$-plane $\mathbb{P}^n\subset M$ if and only if certain intersection-theoretic criteria are met. In particular, any such class satisfies $(R,R)=-…
We study the classification problem for polarized varieties with high nefvalue. We give a complete list of isomorphism classes for normal polarized varieties with high nefvalue. This generalizes classical work on the smooth case by Fujita, Beltrametti and Sommese. As a consequence we obtain that polarized varieties with slc singularities and high nefvalue, are birationally equivalent to projective bundles over nodal curves.
In this paper we prove some general results on secant defective varieties. Then we focus on the 4--dimensional case and we give the full classification of secant defective 4--folds. This paper has been inspired by classical work by G. Scorza,
We study del Pezzo varieties, higher-dimensional analogues of del Pezzo surfaces. In particular, we introduce ADE classification of del Pezzo varieties, show that in type A the dimension of non-conical del Pezzo varieties is bounded by $12 - d - r$, where $d$ is the degree and $r$ is the rank of the class group, and classify maximal del Pezzo varieties.
We classify rank $2$ cluster varieties (those for which the span of the rows of the exchange matrix is $2$-dimensional) according to the deformation type of a generic fiber $U$ of their ${\mathcal X}$-spaces, as defined by Fock and Goncharov [Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. (4) 42 (2009), 865-930]. Our approach is based on the work of Gross, Hacking, and Keel for cluster varieties and log Calabi-Yau surfaces. Call $U$ positive if $\dim[Γ(U,{\mathcal O}_U)] = \dim(U)$ (which equals 2 in these rank 2 cases). This is the condition for the Gross-Hacking-Keel construction [Publ. Math. Inst. Hautes Étude…
In this paper, we study and describe the universal Poisson deformation space of hypertoric varieties concretely. In the first application, we show that affine hypertoric varieties as conical symplectic varieties are classified by the associated regular matroids (this is a partial generalization of the result by Arbo and Proudfoot). As a corollary, we obtain a criterion when two quiver varieties whose dimension vector have all coordinates equal to one are isomorphic to each other. Then we describe all 4- and 6-dimensional affine hypertoric varieties as quiver varieties and give some examples of…
The invariant Hilbert schemes considered in \cite{BC1} were proved to be affine spaces. The proof relied on the classification of strict wonderful varieties. We obtain in the present article a classification-free proof of the affinity of these invariant Hilbert scheme by means of deformation theoretical arguments. As a consequence we recover in a shorter way the classification of strict wonderful varieties. This provides an alternative and new approach to answer Luna's conjecture.
Toric quiver varieties (moduli spaces of quiver representations) are studied. Given a quiver and a weight there is an associated quasiprojective toric variety together with a canonical embedding into projective space. It is shown that for a quiver with no oriented cycles the homogeneous ideal of this embedded projective variety is generated by elements of degree at most $3$. In each fixed dimension $d$ up to isomorphism there are only finitely many $d$-dimensional toric quiver varieties. A procedure for their classification is outlined.
We prove that every smooth projective variety with maximal Albanese dimension has a good minimal model. We also treat Ueno's problem on subvarieties of Abelian varieties.
Here we explore the geometry of the osculating spaces to projective varieties of arbitrary dimension. In particular, we classify varieties having very degenerate higher order osculating spaces and we determine mild conditions for the existence of inflectionary points.
In this paper we show that a smooth toric variety $X$ of Picard number $r\leq 3$ always admits a nef primitive collection supported on a hyperplane admitting non-trivial intersection with the cone $\Nef(X)$ of numerically effective divisors and cutting a facet of the pseudo-effective cone $\Eff(X)$, that is $\Nef(X)\cap\partial\overline{\Eff}(X)\neq\{0\}$. In particular this means that $X$ admits non-trivial and non-big numerically effective divisors. Geometrically this guarantees the existence of a fiber type contraction morphism over a smooth toric variety of dimension and Picard number lowe…
We show that any derived equivalent smooth, projective varieties of dimension 3 over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ have equal zeta functions. This result is an application of the extension to smooth, projective varieties over any field of Popa and Schnell's proof that derived equivalent smooth, projective varieties over $\mathbb{C}$ have isogenous Albanese torsors; this result is proven in an appendix by Achter, Casalaina-Martin, Honigs and Vial.
In this paper the authors study quotients of the product of elliptic curves by a rigid diagonal action of a finite group $G$. It is shown that only for $G = \operatorname{He(3)}, \mathbb Z_3^2$, and only for dimension $\geq 4$ such an action can be free. A complete classification of the singular quotients in dimension 3 and the smooth quotients in dimension $4$ is given. For the other finite groups a strong structure theorem for rigid quotients is proven.
We study the Baily-Borel compactification of a family of four-dimensional orthogonal modular varieties arising in connection with moduli and periods of compact hyperkähler manifolds of deformation generalised Kummer type. Our main results concern the classification of boundary components, their incidence relations and combinatorics.
In this work we provide effective bounds and classification results for rational $\QQ$-factorial Fano varieties with a complexity-one torus action and Picard number one depending on the invariants dimension and Picard index. This complements earlier work by Hausen, Süß and the author, where the case of free divisor class group of rank one was treated.
We present a new proof of the classification of complex simple Lie algebras via the projective geometry of homogeneous varieties. Our proof proceeds by constructing homogeneous varieties using the ideals of the secant and tangential varieties of homogeneous varieties already constructed. Our algorithms make no reference to root systems. Our proofs use properties of root systems, but not their classification.
In this paper we find the explicit formulas of two dimensional commuting ($2\times 2$)-matrix differential operators which were introduced by Nakayashiki. The common eigen functions and eigen values of these operators are parametrized by the points of principally polarized Abelian varieties.
Let $X$ be a closed subscheme of codimension $e$ in a projective space. One says that $X$ satisfies property ${\bf N}_{d,p}$, if the $i$-th syzygies of the homogeneous coordinate ring are generated by elements of degree $<d+i$ for $0\le i\le p$. The geometric and algebraic properties of smooth projective varieties satisfying property ${\bf N}_{2,e}$ are well understood, and the complete classification of these varieties is a classical result. The aim of this paper is to study the next case: projective surfaces in $\Bbb P^5$ satisfying property ${\bf N}_{3,3}$. In particular, we give a classifi…
The prolongation g^{(k)} of a linear Lie algebra g \subset gl(V) plays an important role in the study of symmetries of G-structures. Cartan and Kobayashi-Nagano have given a complete classification of irreducible linear Lie algebras g \subset gl(V) with non-zero prolongations. If g is the Lie algebra aut(\hat{S}) of infinitesimal linear automorphisms of a projective variety S \subset \BP V, its prolongation g^{(k)} is related to the symmetries of cone structures, an important example of which is the variety of minimal rational tangents in the study of uniruled projective manifolds. From this p…
