Regular Lie groups are infinite dimensional Lie groups with the property that smooth curves in the Lie algebra integrate to smooth curves in the group in a smooth way (an `evolution operator' exists). Up to now all known smooth Lie groups are regular. We show in this paper that regular Lie groups allow to push surprisingly far the geometry of principal bundles: parallel transport exists and flat connections integrate to horizontal foliations as in finite dimensions. As consequences we obtain that Lie algebra homomorphisms intergrate to Lie group homomorphisms, if the source group is simply connected and the image group is regular.
We construct a infinite-dimensional manifold structure adapted to analytic Lie pseudogroups of infinite type. More precisely, we prove that any isotropy subgroup of an analytic Lie pseudogroup of infinite type is a regular infinite-dimensional Lie group, modelled on a locally convex strict inductive limit of Banach spaces. This is an infinite-dimensional generalization to the case of Lie pseudogroups of the classical second fundamental theorem of Lie.
We study Lie algebras of generators of infinitesimal symmetries of almost-cosymplectic-contact structures of odd dimensional manifolds. The almost-cosymplectic-contact structure admits on the sheaf of pairs of 1-forms and functions the structure of a Lie algebra. We describe Lie subalgebras in this Lie algebra given by pairs generating infinitesimal symmetries of basic tensor fields given by the almost-cosymplectic-contact structure.
Chern-Weil and Chern-Simons theory extend to certain infinite-rank bundles that appear in mathematical physics. We discuss what is known of the invariant theory of the corresponding infinite-dimensional Lie groups. We use these techniques to detect cohomology classes for spaces of maps between manifolds and for diffeomorphism groups of manifolds.
A multiplicatively closed, horizontal foliation on a Lie groupoid may be viewed as a "pseudoaction" on the base manifold $M$. A pseudoaction generates a pseudogroup of transformations of $M$ in the same way an ordinary Lie group action generates a transformation group. Infinitesimalizing a pseudoaction, one obtains the action of a Lie algebra on $M$, possibly twisted. A global converse to Lie's third theorem proven here states that every twisted Lie algebra action is integrated by a pseudoaction. When the twisted Lie algebra action is complete it integrates to a twisted Lie group action, accor…
Let M be a real analytic manifold modeled on a locally convex space and K be a non-empty compact subset of M. We show that if an open neighborhood of K in M admits a complexification which is a regular topological space, then the germ of the latter (as a complex manifold) is uniquely determined. If M is regular and the complexified modeling space of M is normal, then a regular complexification exists for some neighborhood of K. For each (real or complex) analytic regular manifold M modeled on a metrizable locally convex space and Banach-Lie group H, this allows the group Germ(K,H) of germs of …
We prove a Frobenius theorem for Banach distributions on manifolds that are modelled over locally convex spaces. Moreover, we recall how Frobenius theorems can be applied to infinite-dimensional Lie groups and obtain, that given a Lie subalgebra of the Lie algebra of a Lie group that is modelled over a locally convex space that admits an exponential map, the Lie subalgebra is integrable if it is complemented as a topological vector space and a Banach space with the induced topology.
Our paper is devoted to the study of the holonomy groups of Finsler surfaces using the methods of infinite dimensional Lie theory. The notion of infinitesimal holonomy algebra will be introduced, by the smallest Lie algebra of vector fields on an indicatrix, containing the curvature vector fields and their horizontal covariant derivatives with respect to the Berwald connection. We obtain that the topological closure of the holonomy group contains the exponential image of any tangent Lie algebra of the holonomy group. A class of Randers surfaces is determined, for which the infinitesimal holono…
We study local ($n+1$)-webs of codimension 1 on a manifold of dimension $n.$ We give a complete description of their possible Lie algebras of infinitesimal diffeomorphisms. More precisely we show that these Lie algebras are direct products of sub-algebras which are isomorphic to $\frak{sl}(2),$ to the non-commutative 2-dimensional Lie algebra or commutative. We give also a precise limitation of the number of such direct factors and examples.
This paper studies Brownian motion and heat kernel measure on a class of infinite dimensional Lie groups. We prove a Cameron-Martin type quasi-invariance theorem for the heat kernel measure and give estimates on the $L^p$ norms of the Radon-Nikodym derivatives. We also prove that a logarithmic Sobolev inequality holds in this setting.
We solve three open problems concerning infinite-dimensional Lie groups posed in a recent survey article by K.-H. Neeb: (1) There exists a subgroup of some infinite-dimensional Lie group G which does not admit an initial Lie subgroup structure; (2) The pathology cannot occur if G is a direct limit of an ascending sequence of finite-dimensional Lie groups; (3) Every such direct limit group is a ``topological group with Lie algebra'' in the sense of Hofmann and Morris. Moreover, we prove a version of Borel's Theorem announced in the survey, ensuring the existence of compactly supported smooth di…
The paper gives the complete characterization of all graded nilpotent Lie algebras with infinite-dimensional Tanaka prolongation as extensions of graded nilpotent Lie algebras of lower dimension by means of a commutative ideal. We introduce a notion of weak characteristics of a vector distribution and prove that if a bracket-generating distribution of constant type does not have non-zero complex weak characteristics, then its symmetry algebra is necessarily finite-dimensional. The paper also contains a number of illustrative algebraic and geometric examples including the proof that any metabel…
Motivated by the interesting and yet scattered developments in representation theory of Banach-Lie groups, we discuss several functional analytic issues which should underlie the notion of infinite-dimensional reductive Lie group: norm ideals, triangular integrals, operator factorizations, and amenability.
Infinitesimal conformal transformations of $R^n$ are always polynomial and finitely generated when $n>2$. Here we prove that the Lie algebra of infinitesimal conformal polynomial transformations over $R^n$, $n>1$, is maximal in the Lie algebra of polynomial vector fields. When $n$ is greater than 2 and $p,q$ are such that $p+q=n$, this implies the maximality of an embedding of $so(p+1,q+1,R)$ into polynomial vector fields that was revisited in recent works about equivariant quantizations. It also refines a similar but weaker theorem by V. I. Ogievetsky.
We set up an abstract framework that allows the investigation of Iwasawa decompositions for involutive infinite-dimensional Lie groups modeled on Banach spaces. As an application, we construct Iwasawa decompositions for classical real or complex Banach-Lie groups associated with the Schatten ideals ${\mathfrak S}_p({\mathcal H})$ on a complex separable Hilbert space ${\mathcal H}$ if $1<p<\infty$.
We present an axiomatic approach to finite- and infinite-dimensional differential calculus over arbitrary infinite fields (and, more generally, suitable rings). The corresponding basic theory of manifolds and Lie groups is developed. Special attention is paid to the case of mappings between topological vector spaces over non-discrete topological fields, in particular ultrametric fields or the fields of real and complex numbers. In the latter case, a theory of differentiable mappings between general, not necessarily locally convex spaces is obtained, which in the locally convex case is equivale…
We describe the exponential map from an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra to an infinite-dimensional group of operators on a Hilbert space. Notions of differential geometry are introduced for these groups. In particular, the Ricci curvature, which is understood as the limit of the Ricci curvature of finite-dimensional groups, is calculated. We show that for some of these groups the Ricci curvature is $-\infty$.
In this note we construct an infinite-dimensional Lie group structure on the group of vertical bisections of a regular Lie groupoid. We then identify the Lie algebra of this group and discuss regularity properties (in the sense of Milnor) for these Lie groups. If the groupoid is locally trivial, i.e. a gauge groupoid, the vertical bisections coincide with the gauge group of the underlying bundle. Hence the construction recovers the well known Lie group structure of the gauge groups. To establish the Lie theoretic properties of the vertical bisections of a Lie groupoid over a non-compact base, …
A super Lie group is a group whose operations are $G^{\infty}$ mappings in the sense of Rogers. Thus the underlying supermanifold possesses an atlas whose transition functions are $G^{\infty}$ functions. Moreover the images of our charts are open subsets of a graded infinite-dimensional Banach space since our space of supernumbers is a Banach Grassmann algebra with a countably infinite set of generators. In this context, we prove that if $\hfrak$ is a closed, split sub-super Lie algebra of the super Lie algebra of a super Lie group $\Gcal,$ then $\hfrak$ is the super Lie algebra of a sub-super…
For any regular Lie algebroid $A$, the kernel $K$ and the image $F$ of its anchor map $ρ_A$, together with $A$ itself fit into a short exact sequence, called Atiyah sequence, of Lie algebroids. We prove that Atiyah and Todd classes of dg manifolds arising from regular Lie algebroids respect the Atiyah sequence. That is, the Atiyah and Todd classes of $A$ restrict to the Atiyah and Todd classes of the bundle $K$ of Lie algebras on the one hand, and project onto the Atiyah and Todd classes of the integrable distribution $F \subseteq T_M$ on the other hand.
We study the geodesics problem in Heisenberg group H (case SR and riemannian). The sheaf of infinitesimal automorphisms of the (2n,2n+1) distribution D over H is an infinite, transitive Lie algebra sheaf.
