Replacing each subarc between two nearby marked points with a straight line segment joining them, we obtain a polygonal closed curve which we will call the quadrisecant approximation of the given knot. We show that for any hexagonal trefoil knot, there are only three quadrisecants, and the resulting quadrisecant approximation has the same knot type.

It is known that for every knotted curve in space, there is a line intersecting it in four places, a quadrisecant. Comparing the order of the four points along the line and knot we can distinguish three types of quadrisecants; the alternating ones have the most relevance for the geometry of a knot. In this paper we prove that every (nontrivial tame) knot has an alternating quadrisecant. This result had applications to the total curvature, second hull and ropelength of knots.
Using the existence of a special quadrisecant line, we show the ropelength of any nontrivial knot is at least 15.66. This improves the previously known lower bound of 12. Numerical experiments have found a trefoil with ropelength less than 16.372, so our new bounds are quite sharp.

From an arbitrary diagram one can easily obtain, by some crossing changes, a descending diagram which is a diagram of the unknot or unlink. In this paper the notion of descending diagram for knots and links in the real space is extended to the case of nonoriented knots and links in the projective space. We present the cubic lattice stick index of various knots and links, including all (p,p+1)-torus knots, and show how composing and taking satellites can be used to obtain the cubic lattice stick index for a relatively large infinite class of knots. In this paper we present a sequence of link invariants, defined from twisted Alexander polynomials, and discuss their effectiveness in distinguish knots. In particular, we recast and extend by geometric means a recent result of Silver and Williams on the nontriviality of twisted Alexander polynomials for nontrivial knots. Virtual knot theory is a generalization of knot theory which is based on Gauss chord diagrams and link diagrams on closed oriented surfaces. A twisted knot is a generalization of a virtual knot, which corresponds to a link diagram on a possibly non-orientable surface. In this paper, we discuss an invariant of twisted links which is obtained from the JKSS invariant of virtual links by use of double coverings. We also discuss some properties of double covering diagrams.
This paper is an introduction to the subject of virtual knot theory, combined with a discussion of some specific new theorems about virtual knots. The new results are as follows: We prove, using a 3-dimensional topology approach that if a connected sum of two virtual knots $K_{1}$ and $K_{2}$ is trivial, then so are both $K_{1}$ and $K_{2}$. We establish an algorithm, using Haken-Matveev technique, for recognizing virtual knots. This paper may be read as both an introduction and as a research paper.
