Fiber quadrisecants in knot isotopies

Fix a straight line L in Euclidean 3-space and consider the fibration of the complement of L by half-planes. A generic knot K in the complement of L has neither fiber quadrisecants nor fiber extreme secants such that K touches the corresponding half-plane at 2 points. Both types of secants occur in generic isotopies of knots. We give lower bounds for the number of these fiber secants in all isotopies connecting given isotopic knots. The bounds are expressed in terms of invariants calculable in linear time with respect to the number of crossings.

Quadrisecant approximation of hexagonal trefoil knot

It is known that every nontrivial knot has at least two quadrisecants. Given a knot, we mark each intersection point of each of its quadrisecants. Replacing each subarc between two nearby marked points with a straight line segment joining them, we obtain a polygonal closed curve which we will call the quadrisecant approximation of the given knot. We show that for any hexagonal trefoil knot, there are only three quadrisecants, and the resulting quadrisecant approximation has the same knot type.

Quadrisecants and essential secants of knots: with applications to the geometry of knots

A quadrisecant line is one which intersects a curve in at least four points, while an essential secant captures something about the knottedness of a knot. This survey article gives a brief history of these ideas, and shows how they may be applied to questions about the geometry of a knot via the total curvature, ropelength and distortion of a knot.

Quadrisecants of knots and links

We show that every non-trivial tame knot or link in R^3 has a quadrisecant, i.e. four collinear points. The quadrisecant must be topologically non-trivial in a precise sense. Counting Generic Quadrisecants of Polygonal Knots

Let $K$ be a polygonal knot in general position with vertex set $V$. A \emph{generic quadrisecant} of $K$ is a line that is disjoint from the set $V$ and intersects $K$ in exactly four distinct points. We give an upper bound for the number of generic quadrisecants of a polygonal knot $K$ in general position. This upper bound is in terms of the number of edges of $K$.

Alternating Quadrisecants of Knots

It is known that for every knotted curve in space, there is a line intersecting it in four places, a quadrisecant. Comparing the order of the four points along the line and knot we can distinguish three types of quadrisecants; the alternating ones have the most relevance for the geometry of a knot. In this paper we prove that every (nontrivial tame) knot has an alternating quadrisecant. This result had applications to the total curvature, second hull and ropelength of knots.

Quadrisecants give new lower bounds for the ropelength of a knot

Using the existence of a special quadrisecant line, we show the ropelength of any nontrivial knot is at least 15.66. This improves the previously known lower bound of 12. Numerical experiments have found a trefoil with ropelength less than 16.372, so our new bounds are quite sharp.

A relation between the crossing number and the height of a knotoid

Knotoids are open ended knot diagrams regarded up to Reidemeister moves and isotopies. The notion is introduced by V.~Turaev in 2012.
