In 1955, A.~Grothendieck proved a basic inequality which shows that any bounded linear operator between $L^1(μ)$-spaces maps (Lebesgue-) dominated sequences to dominated sequences. An elementary proof of this inequality is obtained via a new decomposition principle for the lattice of measurable functions. An exposition is also given of the M.~Lévy extension theorem for operators defined on subspaces of $L^1(μ)$-spaces.
We present here several versions of the Grothendieck inequality over the skew field of quaternions: The first one is the standard Grothendieck inequality for rectangular matrices, and two additional inequalities for self-adjoint matrices, as introduced by the first and the last authors in a recent paper. We give several results on ``conic Grothendieck inequality'': as Nesterov $π/2$-Theorem, which corresponds to the cones of positive semidefinite matrices; the Goemans--Williamson inequality, which corresponds to the cones of weighted Laplacians; the diagonally dominant matrices. The most chall…
We present an elementary, self-contained proof of Grothendieck's inequality that unifies the real and complex cases and yields both the Krivine and Haagerup bounds, the current best-known explicit bounds for the real and complex Grothendieck constants respectively. This article is intended to be pedagogical, combining and streamlining known ideas of Lindenstrauss--Pełczyński, Krivine, and Haagerup into a proof that need only univariate calculus, basic complex variables, and a modicum of linear algebra as prerequisites.
As part of the search for the value of the smallest upper bound of the best constant for the famous Grothendieck inequality, the so-called Grothendieck constant (a hard open problem - unsolved since 1953), we provide a further approach, primarily built on functions which map correlation matrices entrywise to correlation matrices by means of the Schur product, multivariate Gaussian analysis, copulas and inversion of suitable Taylor series. We summarise first results and point towards related open problems and topics for future research.
We establish an analogue of the Grothendieck inequality where the rectangular matrix is replaced by a symmetric/Hermitian matrix and the bilinear form by a quadratic form. We call this the symmetric Grothendieck inequality; despite its name, it is a generalization -- the original Grothendieck inequality is a special case. While there are other proposals for such an inequality, ours differs in two important ways: (i) we have no additional requirement like positive semidefiniteness; (ii) our symmetric Grothendieck constant is universal, i.e., independent of the matrix and its dimensions. A conse…
Recently in symplectic geometry there arose an interest in bounding various functionals on spaces of matrices. It appears that Grothendieck's theorems about factorization are a useful tool for proving such bounds. In this note we present two such applications.
In the spirit of Grothendieck's famous inequality from the theory of Banach spaces, we study a sequence of inequalities for the noncommutative Schwartz space, a Fréchet algebra of smooth operators. These hold in non-optimal form by a simple nuclearity argument. We obtain optimal versions and reformulate the inequalities in several different ways.
Using free random varaibles we find an embedding of the operator space $OH$ in the predual of a von Neumann algebra. The properties of this embedding allow us to determined the projection constant of $OH_n$, i.e. there exists a projection $P:B(\ell_2)\to OH_n$ whose completely bounded norm behaves as n^{1/2}/(1+ln n)^{1/2}. According to recent results of Pisier/Shlyahtenko, the lower bound holds for every projection. Improving a previous estimate of order $(1+ ln n)$ of the author, Pisier/Shlyahtenko obtained a `logarithmic little Grothendieck inequality'. We find a second proof of this inequa…
The classical Grothendieck inequality is viewed as a statement about representations of functions of two variables over discrete domains by integrals of two-fold products of functions of one variable. An analogous statement is proved, concerning continuous functions of two variables over general topological domains. The main result is a construction of a continuous map $Φ$ from $l^2(A)$ into $L^2(Ω_A, P_A)$, where $A$ is a set, $Ω_A = {-1,1}^A$, and $P_A$ is the uniform probability measure on $Ω_A$, such that $$\sum_{α\in A} x(α) \bar{y}(α)} = \int_{Ω_A} Φ(x)Φ(\bar{y})dP_A, x \in l^2(A), y \in…
The purpose of this paper is to establish new log-majorization results concerning eigenvalues and singular values which generalize some previous work related to a conjecture and an open question which were presented by R. Lemos and G. Soares in \cite{lemos}. In addition, we present a complement of a unitarily invariant norm inequality which was conjectured by R. Bhatia, Y. Lim and T. Yamazaki in \cite{Bhatia2}, and recently proved by T.H. Dinh, R. Dumitru and J.A. Franco in \cite{Dinh} for the Schatten p-norm with $1\leq p\leq \infty$.
We prove that the uniform growth bound $ω_0(\mathcal{U})$ of a discrete evolution family $\mathcal{U}$ of bounded linear operators acting on a complex Banach space $X$ satisfies the inequality $$ω_0(\mathcal{U})c_{\mathcal{U}}(\mathcal{X})\le -1;$$ here $c_{\mathcal{U}}(\mathcal{X})$ is the operator norm of a convolution operator which acts on a certain Banach space $\mathcal{X}$ of $X$-valued sequences.
We give a counterexample to a trilinear version of the operator space Grothendieck theorem. In particular, we show that for trilinear forms on $\ell_\infty$, the ratio of the symmetrized completely bounded norm and the jointly completely bounded norm is in general unbounded, answering a question of Pisier. The proof is based on a non-commutative version of the generalized von Neumann inequality from additive combinatorics.
We prove the operator space Grothendieck inequality for bilinear forms on subspaces of noncommutative $L_p$-spaces with $2<p<\infty$. One of our results states that given a map $u: E\to F^*$, where $E, F\subset L_p(M)$ ($2<p<\infty$, $M$ being a von Neumann algebra), $u$ is completely bounded iff $u$ factors through a direct sum of a $p$-column space and a $p$-row space. We also obtain several operator space versions of the classical little Grothendieck inequality for maps defined on a subspace of a noncommutative $L_p$-space ($2<p<\infty$) with values in a $q$-column space for every $q\in [p'…
Probably the most famous of Grothendieck's contributions to Banach space theory is the result that he himself described as "the fundamental theorem in the metric theory of tensor products". That is now commonly referred to as "Grothendieck's theorem" (GT in short), or sometimes as "Grothendieck's inequality". This had a major impact first in Banach space theory (roughly after 1968), then, later on, in $C^*$-algebra theory, (roughly after 1978). More recently, in this millennium, a new version of GT has been successfully developed in the framework of "operator spaces" or non-commutative Banach …
In 1973, Diestel published his seminal paper `Grothendieck spaces and vector measures' that drew a connection between Grothendieck spaces (Banach spaces for which weak- and weak*-sequential convergences in the dual space coincide) and vector measures. This connection was developed in his book with J. Uhl Jr. `Vector measures'. Additionally, Diestel's paper included a section with several open problems about the structural properties of Grothendieck spaces, and only half of them have been solved to this day. The present paper aims at synthetically presenting the state of the art at subjectively…
We use different approaches to study a generalization of a result of Levin and Stečkin concerning an inequality analogous to Hardy's inequality. Our results lead naturally to the study of weighted remainder form of Hardy-type inequalities.
The classical inequality of Bohr concerning Taylor coeficients of bounded holomorphic functions on the unit disk, has proved to be of significance in answering in the negative the conjecture that if the non-unital von Neumann inequality held for a Banach algebra then it was necessarily an operator algebra. Here we provide a rather short and easy proof of the inequality.
We discuss when an operator, subject to a rather general inequality in hereditary form, admits a unitarily equivalent functional model of Agler type in the reproducing kernel Hilbert space associated to the inequality. To the contrary to the previous work, the kernel need not be of Nevanlinna-Pick type. We derive some consequences concerning the ergodic behavior of the operator.
We present an inequality for tensor product of positive operators on Hilbert spaces by considering the tensor product of operators as words on certain alphabets (i.e., a set of letters). As applications of the operator inequality and by a multilinear approach, we show some matrix inequalities concerning induced operators and generalized matrix functions (including determinants and permanents as special cases).
Our main result gives an improved bound on the filling areas of closed curves in Banach spaces which are not closed geodesics. As applications we show rigidity of Pu's classical systolic inequality and investigate the isoperimetric constants of normed spaces. The latter has further applications concerning the regularity of minimal surfaces in Finsler manifolds.
A Sobolev type embedding for radially symmetric functions on the unit ball $B$ in $\mathbb R^n$, $n\geq 3$, into the variable exponent Lebesgue space $L_{2^\star + |x|^α} (B)$, $2^\star = 2n/(n-2)$, $α>0$, is known due to J.M. do Ó, B. Ruf, and P. Ubilla, namely, the inequality \[ \sup\Big\{\int_B |u(x)|^{2^\star+|x|^α} dx : u\in H^1_{0,{\rm rad}}(B), \|\nabla u\|_{L^2(B)} =1\Big\} < +\infty \] holds. In this work, we generalize the above inequality for higher order Sobolev spaces of radially symmetric functions on $B$, namely, the embedding \[ H^m_{0,{\rm rad}}(B) \hookrightarrow L_{2_m^\star…
We study several aspects concerning slice regular functions mapping the quaternionic open unit ball into itself. We characterize these functions in terms of their Taylor coefficients at the origin and identify them as contractive multipliers of the Hardy space. In addition, we formulate and solve the Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem in the class of such functions presenting necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence and for the uniqueness of a solution. Finally, we describe all solutions to the problem in the indeterminate case.
In this paper, we extend the classical Bohr's inequality to the setting of the non-commutative Hardy space $H^1$ associated with a semifinite von Neumann algebra. As a consequence, we obtain Bohr's inequality for operators in the von Neumann-Schatten class $\cl C_1$ and square matrices of any finite order. Interestingly, we establish that the optimal bound for $r$ in the above mentioned Bohr's inequality concerning von Neumann-Shcatten class is 1/3 whereas it is 1/2 in the case of $2\times 2$ matrices and reduces to $\sqrt{2}-1$ for the case of $3\times 3$ matrices. We also obtain a generaliza…
Normalized free semi-circular random variables satisfy an upper Khintchine inequality in $L_\infty$. We show that this implies the corresponding upper Khintchine inequality in any noncommutative Banach function space. As applications, we obtain a very simple proof of a well-known interpolation result for row and column operator spaces and, moreover, answer an open question on noncommutative moment inequalities concerning a paper by Bekjan and Chen.
We study the cases of equality and prove a rigidity theorem concerning the 1-Bakry-Émery inequality. As an application, we prove the rigidity of the Gaussian isoperimetric inequality, the logarithmic Sobolev inequality and the Poincaré inequality in the setting of ${\rm RCD}(K, \infty)$ metric measure spaces. This unifies and extends to the non-smooth setting the results of Carlen-Kerce, Morgan, Bouyrie, Ohta-Takatsu, Cheng-Zhou. Examples of non-smooth spaces fitting our setting are measured-Gromov Hausdorff limits of Riemannian manifolds with uniform Ricci curvature lower bound, and Alexandro…
Two relatively long-standing conjectures concerning Müntz polynomials are resolved. The central tool is a bounded Remez type inequality for non-dense Müntz spaces.
This is the second in our series of papers concerning some reversed Hardy--Littlewood--Sobolev inequalities. In the present work, we establish the following sharp reversed Hardy--Littlewood--Sobolev inequality on the half space $\mathbb R_+^n$ \[ \int_{\mathbb R_+^n} \int_{\partial \mathbb R_+^n} f(x) |x-y|^λg(y) dx dy \geqslant \mathscr C_{n,p,r} \|f\|_{L^p(\partial \mathbb R_+^n)} \, \|g\|_{L^r(\mathbb R_+^n)} \] for any nonnegative functions $f\in L^p(\partial \mathbb R_+^n)$, $g\in L^r(\mathbb R_+^n)$, and $p,r\in (0,1)$, $λ> 0$ such that $(1-1/n)1/p + 1/r -(λ-1) /n =2$. Some estimates for…
