Let $\eps >0$. We prove that there exists an operator $T_\eps:\ell_2\to\ell_2$, such that for any polynomial $P$ we have $\|{P(T)}\| \leq(1+\eps)\|{P}\|_\infty$, but which is not similar to a contraction, {\it i.e.} there does not exist an invertible operator $S:\ \ell_2\to\ell_2$ such that $\|{S^{-1}T_\eps S}\|\leq 1$. This answers negatively a question attributed to Halmos after his well known 1970 paper (``Ten problems in Hilbert space").
Let $T$ be a polynomially bounded operator, and let $\mathcal M$ be its invariant subspace. Suppose that $P_{\mathcal M^\perp}T|_{\mathcal M^\perp}$ is similar to a contraction, while $θ(T|_{\mathcal M})=0$, where $θ$ is a finite product of Blaschke products with simple zeros satisfying the Carleson interpolating condition (a Carleson--Newman Blaschke product). Then $T$ is similar to a contraction. It is mentioned that Le Merdy's example shows that the assumption of polynomially boundedness cannot be replaced by the assumption of power boundedness.
The question if polynomially bounded operator is similar to a contraction was posed by Halmos and was answered in the negative by Pisier. His counterexample is an operator of infinite multiplicity, while all its restrictions on invariant subspaces of finite multiplicity are similar to contractions. In [G16], cyclic polynomially bounded operators which are not similar to contractions was constructed. The construction was based on a perturbation of the sequence of finite dimensional operators which is uniformly polynomially bounded, but is not uniformly completely polynomially bounded, construct…
Quasianalytic contractions form the crucial class in the quest for proper invariant and hyperinvariant subspaces for asymptotically non-vanishing Hilbert space contractions. The property of quasianalycity relies on the concepts of unitary asymptote and $H^ı$-functional calculus. These objects can be naturally defined in the setting of polynomially bounded operators too, which makes possible to extend the study of quasianalycity from contractions to this larger class. Carrying out this program we pose also several interesting questions.
A particular case of results from [K2] is as follows. Let the unitary asymptote of a contraction $T$ contain the bilateral shift (of finite or infinite multiplicity). Then there exists an invariant subspace $\mathcal M$ of $T$ such that $T|_{\mathcal M}$ is similar to the unilateral shift of the same multiplicity. The proof is based on the Sz.-Nagy--Foias functional model for contractions. In the present paper this result is generalized to polynomially bounded operators, but in the simplest case. Namely, it is proved that if the unitary asymptote of a polynomially bounded operator $T$ contains…
A particular case of [07] was generalized from contractions to polynomially bounded operators in [G19]. Namely, it is proved in [G19] that if the unitary asymptote of a polynomially bounded operator $T$ contains the bilateral shift of multiplicity $1$, then there exists an invariant subspace $\mathcal M$ of $T$ such that $T|_{\mathcal M}$ is similar to the unilateral shift of multiplicity $1$. In the present paper, some corollaries of this result are given. In particular, reflexivity of polynomially bounded operators described above is proved.
Let T and C be two Hilbert space operators. We prove that if T is near, in a certain sense, to an operator completely polynomially dominated with a finite bound by C, then T is similar to an operator which is completely polynomially dominated by the direct sum of C and a suitable weighted unilateral shift. Among the applications, a refined Banach space version of Rota similarity theorem is given and partial answers to a problem of K. Davidson and V. Paulsen are obtained. The latter problem concerns CAR-valued Foguel-Hankel operators which are generalizations of the operator considered by G. Pi…
We show that if ${\bf a}=(a_n)_{n\in \N}$ is a good weight for the dominated weighted ergodic theorem in $L^p$, $p>1$, then the Nörlund matrix $N_{\bf a}=\{a_{i-j}/A_i\}_{0\le j\le i}$, $A_i=\sum_{k=0}^i |a_k|$ is bounded on $\ell^p(\N)$. We study the regularity (convergence in norm, almost everywhere) of operators in ergodic theory: power series of Hilbert contractions, and power series $\sum_{n\in \N} a_nP_nf $ of $L^2$-contractions, and establish similar tight relations with the Nörlund operator associated to the modulus coefficient sequence $(|a_n|)_{n\in \N}$.
Given a closed linear relation $T$ between two Hilbert spaces $\mathcal H$ and $\mathcal K$, the corresponding first and second coordinate projections $P_T$ and $Q_T$ are both linear contractions from $T$ to $\mathcal H$, and to $\mathcal K$, respectively. In this paper we investigate the features of these graph contractions. We show among others that $P_T^{}P_T^*=(I+T^*T)^{-1}$, and that $Q_T^{}Q_T^*=I-(I+TT^*)^{-1}$. The ranges $\operatorname{ran} P_T^{*}$ and $\operatorname{ran} Q_T^{*}$ are proved to be closely related to the so called `regular part' of $T$. The connection of the graph pro…
We study the behavior of some classes of Hilbert space contractions with respect to Harnack and Shmul'yan pre-orders and the corresponding equivalence relations. We give some conditions under which the Harnack equivalence of two given contractions is equivalent to their Shmul'yan equivalence and to the existence of an arc joining the two contractions in the class of operator-valued contractive analytic functions on the unit disc. We apply some of these results to quasi-isometries and quasi-normal contractions, as well as to partial isometries for which we show that their Harnack and Shmul'yan …
A recent paper of Shemesh shows triangularizability of a pair $\{A, B\}$ of complex matrices satisfying the condition $A [A,B]=[A,B] B=0$, or equivalently, the matrices $A$ and $B$ commute with their product $A B$. In this paper we extend this result to polynomially compact operators on Banach spaces. The case when the underlying space is Hilbert and one of operators is normal is also studied. Furthermore, we consider families of polynomially compact operators whose iterated commutators of some fixed length are zero. We also obtain a structure result in the special case of a finite family of a…
In this paper we completely characterize the norm attainment set of a bounded linear operator on a Hilbert space. This partially answers a question raised recently in [\textit{D. Sain, On the norm attainment set of a bounded linear operator, accepted in Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications}]. We further study the extreme contractions on various types of finite-dimensional Banach spaces, namely Euclidean spaces, and strictly convex spaces. In particular, we give an elementary alternative proof of the well-known characterization of extreme contractions on a Hilbert space, that works…
The fundamental result of B. Sz. Nazy states that every contraction has a coisometric extension and a unitary dilation. The isometric dilation of a contraction on a Hilbert space motivated whether this theory can be extended sensibly to families of operators. It is natural to ask whether this idea can be generalized, where the contraction $T$ is substituted by a commuting $n$-tuples of operators $(S_1,\cdots, S_n)$ acting on some Hilbert space having $Γ_n$ as a spectral set. We derive the necessary conditions for the existence of a $Γ_n$-isometric dilation for $Γ_n$-contractions. Also we discu…
A characteristic function is a special operator-valued analytic function defined on the open unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^n$ associated with an $n$-tuple of commuting row contraction on some Hilbert space. In this paper, we continue our study of the representations of $n$-tuples of commuting row contractions on Hilbert spaces, which have polynomial characteristic functions. Gleason's problem plays an important role in the representations of row contractions. We further complement the representations of our row contractions by proving theorems concerning factorizations of characteristic functions. …
In [U] (among other results), M. Uchiyama gave the necessary and sufficient conditions for contractions to be similar to the unilateral shift $S$ of multiplicity $1$ in terms of norm-estimates of complete analytic families of eigenvectors of their adjoints. In [G2], it was shown that this result for contractions can't be extended to power bounded operators. Namely, a cyclic power bounded operator was constructed which has the requested norm-estimates, is a quasiaffine transform of $S$, but is not quasisimilar to $S$. In this paper, it is shown that the additional assumption on a power bounded …
A bounded domain $K \subset \mathbb R^n$ is called polynomially integrable if the $(n-1)$-dimensional volume of the intersection $K$ with a hyperplane $Π$ polynomially depends on the distance from $Π$ to the origin. It was proved in [7] that there are no such domains with smooth boundary if $n$ is even, and if $n$ is odd then the only polynomially integrable domains with smooth boundary are ellipsoids. In this article, we modify the notion of polynomial integrability for even $n$ and consider bodies for which the sectional volume function is a polynomial up to a factor which is the square root…
We develop a Sz.-Nagy--Foias-type functional model for a commutative contractive operator tuple $\underline{T} = (T_1, \dots, T_d)$ having $T = T_1 \cdots T_d$ equal to a completely nonunitary contraction. We identify additional invariants ${\mathbb G}_\sharp, {\mathbb W}_\sharp$ in addition to the Sz.-Nagy--Foias characteristic function $Θ_T$ for the product operator $T$ so that the combined triple $({\mathbb G}_\sharp, {\mathbb W}_\sharp, Θ_T)$ becomes a complete unitary invariant for the original operator tuple $\underline{T}$. For the case $d \ge 3$ in general there is no commutative isome…
A commuting triple of Hilbert space operators $(A,B,P)$, for which the closed tetrablock $\overline{\mathbb E}$ is a spectral set, is called a \textit{tetrablock-contraction} or simply an $\mathbb E$-\textit{contraction}, where \[ \mathbb E=\{(x_1,x_2,x_3)\in \mathbb C^3:\, 1-x_1z-x_2w+x_3zw \neq 0 \quad \text{ whenever } \; |z|\leq 1, \; \; |w|\leq 1 \} \subset \mathbb C^3, \] is a polynomially convex domain which is naturally associated with the $μ$-synthesis problem. By applications of the theory of $\mathbb E$-contractions, we obtain several results on decompositions of contractions.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of contractive operators and strongly continuous semigroups on separable Hilbert spaces using the notion of rigidity. In particular, we show that a "typical" contraction $T$ contains the unit circle times the identity operator in the strong limit set of its powers, while $T^{n_j}$ converges weakly to zero along a sequence $\{n_j\}$ with density one. The continuous analogue is presented for isometric ang unitary $C_0$-(semi)groups.
Let $A_1,\ldots,A_d$ be a $d$-tuple of commuting dissipative operators on a separable Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. Using the theory of operator vessels and their associated systems, we give a construction of a dilation of the multi-parameter semigroup of contractions on $\mathcal{H}$ given by $e^{i \sum_{j=1}^d t_j A_j}$.
The principal theorem of Sz.-Nagy on dilation of a positive definite Hilbert space operator valued function has played a central role in the development of the non-self-adjoint operator theory. In this paper we introduce the positive definiteness for locally Hilbert space operator valued kernels, we prove an analogue of the Sz.-Nagy dilation theorem and, as application, we obtain dilation results for locally contractions and locally $ρ$ - contractions as well as for locally semi-spectral measures.
This paper generalizes the classical Sz.-Nagy--Foias $H^{\infty}(\mathbb{D})$ functional calculus for Hilbert space contractions. In particular, we replace the single contraction $T$ with a tuple $T=(T_1, \dots, T_d)$ of commuting bounded operators on a Hilbert space and replace $H^{\infty}(\mathbb{D})$ with a large class of multiplier algebras of Hilbert function spaces on the unit ball in $\mathbb C^d$.
In the deBranges-Rovnyak functional model for contractions on Hilbert space, any completely non-coisometric (CNC) contraction is represented as the adjoint of the restriction of the backward shift to a deBranges-Rovnyak space, $\mathscr{H} (b)$, associated to a contractive analytic operator-valued function, $b$, on the open unit disk. We extend this model to a large class of CNC row contractions of several copies of a Hilbert space into itself (including all CNC row contractions with commuting component operators). Namely, we completely characterize the set of all CNC row contractions, $T$, wh…
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a complex, separable Hilbert space and $\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})$ denote the algebra of all bounded linear operators acting on $\mathcal{H}$. Given a unitarily-invariant norm $\| \cdot \|_u$ on $\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})$ and two linear operators $A$ and $B$ in $\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})$, we shall say that $A$ and $B$ are \emph{polynomially isometric relative to} $\| \cdot \|_u$ if $\| p(A) \|_u = \| p(B) \|_u$ for all polynomials $p$. In this paper, we examine to what extent an operator $A$ being polynomially isometric to a normal operator $N$ implies that $A$ is itself no…
Using the technique of enrichment of contractive type mappings by Krasnoselskij averaging, introduced in [Berinde, V., {\it Approximating fixed points of enriched nonexpansive mappings by Krasnoselskij iteration in Hilbert spaces}, Carpathian J. Math. {\bf 35} (2019), no. 3, 277-288.], we introduce the class of enriched Chatterjea contractions and prove general fixed point theorems for such contractions in the setting of a Banach space. Examples to illustrate the richness of the new class of contractions and the relationship between enriched Banach contractions, enriched Kannan contractions an…
A commuting triple of operators $(A,B,P)$ on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ is called a tetrablock contraction if the closure of the set $$ E = \{\underline{x}=(x_1,x_2,x_3)\in \mathbb{C}^3: 1-x_1z-x_2w+x_3zw \neq 0 \text{whenever}|z| \leq 1\text{and}|w| \leq 1 \} $$ is a spectral set. In this paper, we have constructed a functional model and produced a complete unitary invariant for a pure tetrablock contraction. In this construction, the fundamental operators, which are the unique solutions of the operator equations $$ A-B^*P = D_PX_1D_P \text{and} B-A^*P=D_PX_2D_P, \text{where $X_1,X_2 \in \…
Let $n>1$, and $\{U_{ij}\}$ for $1 \leq i < j \leq n$ be $\binom{n}{2}$ commuting unitaries on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ such that $U_{ji}:=U^*_{ij}$. An $n$-tuple of contractions $(T_1, \dots, T_n)$ on $\mathcal{H}$ is called $\mathcal{U}_n$-twisted contraction with respect to a twist $\{U_{ij}\}_{i<j}$ if $T_1, \dots, T_n$ satisfy \[ T_iT_j=U_{ij}T_jT_i; \hspace{0.5cm} \hspace{1cm} T_i^*T_j= U^*_{ij}T_jT_i^* \hspace{0.5cm} \mbox{and} \hspace{0.5cm} T_kU_{ij} =U_{ij}T_k \] for all $i,j,k=1, \dots, n$ and $i \neq j$. We obtain a recipe to calculate the orthogonal spaces of the Wold-type de…
A classical result of Sz.-Nagy asserts that a Hilbert-space contraction operator $T$ can be lifted to an isometry $V$. A more general multivariable setting of recent interest for these ideas is the case where (i) the unit disk is replaced by a certain domain contained in ${\mathbb C}^3$ (called the {\em tetrablock}), (ii) the contraction operator $T$ is replaced by a commutative triple $(T_1, T_2, T)$ of Hilbert-space operators having ${\mathbb E}$ as a spectral set (a tetrablock contraction) . The rational dilation question for this setting is whether a tetrablock contraction $(T_1, T_2, T)$ …
Suppose $L(H)$ is the space of all bounded linear operators on a complex Hilbert space $H.$ This article deals with the problem of characterizing the extreme contractions of $L(H)$ with respect to the numerical radius norm on $L(H).$ In contrast to the usual operator norm, it is proved that there exists a class of unitary operators on $H$ which are not extreme contractions when the numerical radius norm is considered on $L(H).$ Moreover, there are non-unitary operators on $H$ which are extreme contractions as far as the numerical radius norm is concerned.
We discuss the two closely related, but different concepts of weak and almost weak stability for the powers of a contraction on a separable Hilbert space. Extending Halmos' and Rohlin's theorems in ergodic theory as a model, we show that the set of all weakly stable contractions is of first category while the set of all almost weakly stable contractions is of second category and is residual. Analogous statements for unitary and isometric operators are also proved.
An n-dilation of a contraction T acting on a Hilbert space H is a unitary dilation acting on H \oplus C^n. We show that if both defect numbers of T are equal to n, then the closure of the numerical range of T is the intersection of the closures of the numerical ranges of its n-dilations. We also obtain detailed information about the geometrical properties of the numerical range of T in case n=1.
An order relation for contractions on a Hilbert space can be introduced by stating that $A\preccurlyeq B$ if and only $A$ is unitarily equivalent to the restriction of $B$ to an invariant subspace. We discuss the equivalence classes associated to this relation, and identify cases in which they coincide with classes of unitary equivalence. The results extend those for completely nonunitary partial isometries obtained by Garcia, Martin, and Ross.
An example due to Pisier shows that two commuting, completely polynomially bounded Hilbert space operators may not be simultaneously similar to contractions. Thus, while each operator is individually similar to a contraction, the pair is not jointly similar to a pair of commuting contractions. We show that this phenomenon does not occur in finite dimensions. More precisely, we show that a finite family of power bounded commuting matrices is always jointly similar to a family of contractions. In fact, the result can be extended to infinite families satisfying certain uniformity conditions. Our …
Let $T$ and $V$ be two Hilbert space contractions and let $X$ be a linear bounded operator. It was proved by C. Foias and J.P. Williams that in certain cases the operator block matrix $R(X;T,V)$ (defined in the text) is similar to a contraction if and only if the commutator equation $X = TZ-ZV$ has a bounded solution $Z$. We characterize here the similarity to contractions of some operator matrices $R(X;T,V)$ in terms of growth conditions or of perturbations of $R(0;T,V)=T\oplus V$.
A commuting tuple of $n$ operators $(S_1, \dots, S_{n-1}, P)$ defined on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, for which the closed symmetrized polydisc \[ Γ_n = \left\{ \left(\sum_{i=1}^{n}z_i, \sum\limits_{1\leq i<j\leq n}z_iz_j, \dots, \prod_{i=1}^{n}z_i \right) : |z_i|\leq 1, i=1, \dots, n \right\} \] is a spectral set is called a $Γ_n$-contraction. Also a triple of commuting operators $(A,B,P)$ for which the closed tetrablock $\overline{\mathbb E}$ is a spectral set is called an $\mathbb E$-contraction, where \[ \mathbb E = \{ (x_1,x_2,x_3)\in\mathbb C^3\,:\, 1-zx_1-wx_2+zwx_3 \neq 0 \quad \fora…
The de Branges--Rovnyak spaces are known to provide an alternate functional model for contractions on a Hilbert space, equivalent to the Sz.-Nagy--Foias model. The scalar de Branges--Rovnyak spaces $\mathcal{H}(b)$ have essentially different properties, according to whether the defining function $b$ is or not extreme in the unit ball of $H^\infty$. For $b$ extreme the model space is just $\mathcal{H}(b)$, while for $b$ nonextreme an additional construction is required. In the present paper we identify the precise class of contractions which have as a model $\mathcal{H}(b)$ with $b$ nonextreme.
Let $F$ and $G$ be two bounded operators on two Hilbert spaces. Let their numerical radii be no greater than one. This note investigate when there is a $Γ$-contraction $(S,P)$ such that $F$ is the fundamental operator of $(S,P)$ and $G$ is the fundamental operator of $(S^*,P^*)$. Theorem 1 puts a necessary condition on $F$ and $G$ for them to be the fundamental operators of $(S,P)$ and $(S^*,P^*)$ respectively. Theorem 2 shows that this necessary condition is sufficient too provided we restrict our attention to a certain special case. The general case is investigated in Theorem 3. Some of the …
Let $T$ be a $C_0$--contraction on a separable Hilbert space. We assume that $I_H-T^*T$ is compact. For a function $f$ holomorphic in the unit disk $\DD$ and continuous on $\bar\DD$, we show that $f(T)$ is compact if and only if $f$ vanishes on $σ(T)\cap \TT$, where $σ(T)$ is the spectrum of $T$ and $\TT$ the unit circle. If $f$ is just a bounded holomorphic function on $\DD$ we prove that $f(T)$ is compact if and only if $\lim_{n\to \infty} T^nf(T) =0$.
The simplest and most natural examples of completely nonunitary contractions on separable complex Hilbert spaces which have polynomial characteristic functions are the nilpotent operators. The main purpose of this paper is to prove the following theorem: Let $T$ be a completely nonunitary contraction on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. If the characteristic function $Θ_T$ of $T$ is a polynomial of degree $m$, then there exist a Hilbert space $\mathcal{M}$, a nilpotent operator $N$ of order $m$, a coisometry $V_1 \in \mathcal{L}(\overline{ran} (I - N N^*) \oplus \mathcal{M}, \overline{ran} (I - T…
A contraction $T$ on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ is said to be pure if the sequence $\lbrace T^{*n} \rbrace_{n}$ converges to $0$ in the strong operator topology. In this article, we prove that for contractions $T$, which commute with certain tractable tuples of commuting operators $X = (X_1,\ldots,X_n)$ on $\mathcal{H}$, the following statements are equivalent: (i) $T$ is a pure contraction on $\mathcal{H}$, (ii) the compression $P_{\mathcal{W}(X)}T|_{\mathcal{W}(X)}$ is a pure contraction, where $\mathcal{W}(X)$ is the wandering subspace corresponding to the tuple $X$. An operator-valued m…
The purpose of this paper is to describe the Harnack parts for the operators of class C $ρ$ ($ρ$ \textgreater{} 0) on Hilbert spaces which were introduced by B. Sz. Nagy and C. Foias in [25]. More precisely, we study Harnack parts of operators with $ρ$-numerical radius one. The case of operators with $ρ$-numerical radius strictly less than 1 was described in [10]. We obtain a general criterion for compact $ρ$-contractions to be in the same Harnack part. We give a useful equivalent form of this criterion for usual contractions. Operators with numerical radius one received also a particular atte…
For a power bounded or polynomially bounded operator $T$ sufficient conditions for the existence of a nontrivial hyperinvariant subspace are given. The obtained hyperinvariant subspaces of $T$ have the form of the closure of the range of $φ(T)$. Here $φ$ is a singular inner function, if $T$ is polynomially bounded, or $φ$ is an analytic in the unit disc function with absolutely summable Taylor coefficients and singular inner part, if $T$ is supposed to be power bounded only. Also, an example of a quasianalytic contraction $T$ is given. The quasianalytic spectral set of $T$ is not the whole uni…
We develop a $d$-variable analog of the two-component de Bran-ges-Rovnyak reproducing kernel Hilbert space associated with a Schur-class function on the unit disk. In this generalization, the unit disk is replaced by the unit ball in $d$-dimensional complex Euclidean space, and the Schur class becomes the class of contractive multipliers on the Drury-Arveson space over the ball. We also develop some results on a model theory for commutative row contractions which are not necessarily completely noncoisometric (the case considered in earlier work of Bhattacharyya, Eschmeier and Sarkar)
Let $X$ be a complex Banach space and let $J:X \to X^*$ be a duality section on $X$ (i.e. $\langle x,J(x)\rangle=\|J(x)\|\|x\|=\|J(x)\|^2=\|x\|^2$). For any unit vector $x$ and any ($C_0$) contraction semigroup $T=\{e^{tA}:t \geq 0\}$, Goldstein proved that if $X$ is a Hilbert space and if $|\langle T(t) x,J(x)\rangle| \to 1 $ as $t \to \infty$, then $x$ is an eigenvector of $A$ corresponding to a purely imaginary eigenvalue. In this article, we prove the similar result holds if $X$ is a strictly convex complex Banach space.
An equivalent formulation of the von Neumann inequality states that the backward shift $S^*$ on $\ell_{2}$ is extremal, in the sense that if $T$ is a Hilbert space contraction, then $\|p(T)\| \leq \|p(S^*)\|$ for each polynomial $p$. We discuss several results of the following type : if $T$ is a Hilbert space contraction satisfying some constraints, then $S^*$ restricted to a suitable invariant subspace is an extremal operator. Several operator radii are used instead of the operator norm. Applications to inequalities of coefficients of rational functions positive on the torus are given.
We establish the existence and uniqueness of finite free resolutions - and their attendant Betti numbers - for graded commuting d-tuples of Hilbert space operators. Our approach is based on the notion of free cover of a (perhaps noncommutative) row contraction. Free covers provide a flexible replacement for minimal dilations that is better suited for higher-dimensional operator theory. For example, every graded d-contraction that is finitely multi-cyclic has a unique free cover of finite type - whose kernel is a Hilbert module inheriting the same properties. This contrasts sharply with what ca…
A commuting triple of Hilbert space operators $(A,B,P)$, for which the closed tetrablock $\bar{\mathbb E}$ is a spectral set, is called a \textit{tetrablock-contraction} or simply an $\mathbb E$-\textit{contraction}, where \[ \mathbb E=\{(a_{11},a_{22}, \det A):\, A=[a_{ij}]\in \mathcal M_2(\mathbb C), \; \|A\| <1 \} \subset \mathbb C^3 \] is a polynomially convex domain which is naturally associated with the $μ$-synthesis problem. We introduce triangular $\mathbb E$-contractions and prove that every pure triangular $\mathbb E$-contraction dilates to a pure triangular $\mathbb E$-isometry. We …
A pair of commuting operators $(S,P)$ defined on a Hilbert space $\mathcal H$ for which the closed symmetrized bidisc $$ Γ= \{(z_1+z_2,z_1z_2):: |z_1|\leq 1,\, |z_2|\leq 1 \}\subseteq \mathbb C^2, $$ is a spectral set is called a $Γ$-contraction in the literature. A $Γ$-contraction $(S,P)$ is said to be pure if $P$ is a pure contraction, i.e, ${P^*}^n \rightarrow 0$ strongly as $n \rightarrow \infty $. Here we construct a functional model and produce a complete unitary invariant for a pure $Γ$-contraction. The key ingredient in these constructions is an operator, which is the unique solution o…
Given a contraction A on a Hilbert space H, an operator T on H is said to be A-invariant if <Tx,x>=<TAx,Ax> for every x in H such that ||Ax||=||x||. In the special case in which both defect indices of A are equal to 1, we show that every A-invariant operator is the compression to H of an unbounded linear transformation that commutes with the minimal unitary dilation of A. This result was proved by Sarason under the additional hypothesis that A is of class C_{00}, leading to an intrinsic characterization of the truncated Toeplitz operators. We also adapt to our more general context other result…
