Given a set $V$, a subset $S$, and a permutation $π$ of $V$, we say that $π$ permutes $S$ if $π(S) \cap S = \emptyset$. Given a collection $\cS = \{V; S_1,\ldots , S_m\}$, where $S_i \subseteq V ~~(i=1,\ldots ,m)$, we say that $\cS$ is invertible if there is a permutation $π$ of $V$ such that $π(S_i) \subseteq V-S_i$. In this paper, we present necessary and sufficient conditions for the invertibility of a collection and construct a polynomial algorithm which determines whether a given collection is invertible. For an arbitrary collection, we give a lower bound for the maximum number of sets that can be inverted. Finally, we consider the problem of constructing a collection of sets such that no sub-collection of size three is invertible. Our constructions of such collections come from solutions to the packing problem with unbounded block sizes. We prove several new lower and upper bounds for the packing problem and present a new explicit construction of packing.
Packing density is a permutation occurrence statistic which describes the maximal number of permutations of a given type that can occur in another permutation. In this article we focus on containment of sets of permutations. Although this question has been tangentially considered previously, this is the first systematic study of it. We find the packing density for various special sets of permutations and study permutation and pattern co-occurrence.
A packing of partial difference sets is a collection of disjoint partial difference sets in a finite group $G$. This configuration has received considerable attention in design theory, finite geometry, coding theory, and graph theory over many years, although often only implicitly. We consider packings of certain Latin square type partial difference sets in abelian groups having identical parameters, the size of the collection being either the maximum possible or one smaller. We unify and extend numerous previous results in a common framework, recognizing that a particular subgroup reveals imp…
A set $S\subseteq V$ is $α$-dominating if for all $v\in V-S$, $|N(v) \cap S | \geq α|N(v)|.$ The $α$-domination number of $G$ equals the minimum cardinality of an $α$-dominating set $S$ in $G$. Since being introduced by Dunbar, et al. in 2000, $α$-domination has been studied for various graphs and a variety of bounds have been developed. In this paper, we propose a new parameter derived by flipping the inequality in the definition of $α$-domination. We say a set $S \subset V$ is a $β$-packing set of a graph $G$ if $S$ is a proper, maximal set having the property that for all vertices $v \in V-…
Given a digraph $D=(V,A)$, a set $B\subset V$ is a packing set in $D$ if there are no arcs joining vertices of $B$ and for any two vertices $x,y\in B$ the sets of in-neighbors of $x$ and $y$ are disjoint. The set $S$ is a dominating set (an open dominating set) in $D$ if every vertex not in $S$ (in $V$) has an in-neighbor in $S$. Moreover, a dominating set $S$ is called a total dominating set if the subgraph induced by $S$ has no isolated vertices. The packing sets of maximum cardinality and the (total, open) dominating sets of minimum cardinality in digraphs are studied in this article. We pr…
An integer packing set is a set of non-negative integer vectors with the property that, if a vector $x$ is in the set, then every non-negative integer vector $y$ with $y \leq x$ is in the set as well. Integer packing sets appear naturally in Integer Optimization. In fact, the set of integer points in any packing polyhedron is an integer packing set. The main result of this paper is that integer packing sets, ordered by inclusion, form a well-quasi-ordering. This result allows us to answer a question recently posed by Bodur et al. In fact, we prove that the k-aggregation closure of any packing …
Every set of natural numbers determines a generating function convergent for $q \in (-1,1)$ whose behavior as $q \rightarrow 1^-$ determines a germ. These germs admit a natural partial ordering that can be used to compare sizes of sets of natural numbers in a manner that generalizes both cardinality of finite sets and density of infinite sets. For any finite set $D$ of positive integers, call a set $S$ "$D$-avoiding" if no two elements of $S$ differ by an element of $D$. It is shown that any $D$-avoiding set that is maximal in the class of $D$-avoiding sets (with respect to germ-ordering) is u…
Edmonds' fundamental theorem on arborescences characterizes the existence of $k$ pairwise arc-disjoint spanning arborescences with prescribed root sets in a digraph. In this paper, we study the problem of packing branchings in digraphs under cardinality constraints on their root sets by arborescence augmentation. Let $D=(V+x,A)$ be a digraph, $\mathcal{P}=$ $\{I_{1}, \ldots, I_{l} \}$ be a partition of $[k]$, $c_{1}, \ldots, c_{l}, c'_{1}, \ldots, c'_{l}$ be nonnegative integers such that $c_α \leq c'_α$ for $α\in [l]$, $F_{1}, \ldots, F_{k}$ be $k$ arc-disjoint $x$-arborescences in $D$ such t…

A set of $N$ permutations of $\{1,2,\ldots,v\}$ is $t$-suitable, if each symbol precedes each subset of $t-1$ others in at least one permutation. The extremal problem of determining the smallest size $N$ of such sets for given $v$ and $t$ was the subject of classical studies by Dushnik in 1950 and Spencer in 1971. Colbourn recently introduced the concept of suitable cores as equivalent objects of suitable sets of permutations, and studied the dual problem of determining the largest $v=\text{SCN}(t,N)$ such that a suitable core exists for given $t$ and $N$. Chan and Jedwab showed that when $N=\…
Let $s(n)$ be the side length of the smallest square into which $n$ non-overlapping unit squares can be packed. In 2010, the author showed that $s(13)=4$ and $s(46)=7$. Together with the result $s(6)=3$ by Keaney and Shiu, these results strongly suggest that $s(m^2-3)=m$ for $m\ge 3$, in particular for the values $m=5,6$, which correspond to cases that lie in between the previous results. In this article we show that indeed $s(m^2-3)=m$ for $m=5,6$, implying that the most efficient packings of 22 and 33 squares are the trivial ones. To achieve our results, we modify the well-known method of se…
The induced odd cycle packing number $iocp(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the maximum integer $k$ such that $G$ contains an induced subgraph consisting of $k$ pairwise vertex-disjoint odd cycles. Motivated by applications to geometric graphs, Bonamy et al.~\cite{indoc} proved that graphs of bounded induced odd cycle packing number, bounded VC dimension, and linear independence number admit a randomized EPTAS for the independence number. We show that the assumption of bounded VC dimension is not necessary, exhibiting a randomized algorithm that for any integers $k\ge 0$ and $t\ge 1$ and any $n$-vertex g…
For a given subset $A\subseteq \mathbb F_q^*$, we study the problem of finding a large packing set $B$ of $A$, that is, a set $B \subseteq \mathbb F_q^*$ such that $|AB|=|A||B|$. We prove the existence of such a $B$ of size $|B|\ge (q-1)/|A/A|$ and show that this bound is in general optimal. The case that $q=p$ is a prime and $A=\{1,2,\ldots,λ\}$ for some positive integer $λ$ is particularly interesting in view of the construction of limited-magnitude error correcting codes. Here we construct a packing set $B$ of size $|B|\gg p (λ\log p)^{-1}$ for any $λ\le c p^{1/2}$ for some explicitly calcu…
Two constructions of lattice packings of $ n $-dimensional cross-polytopes ($ \ell_1 $ balls) are described, the density of which exceeds that of any prior construction by a factor of at least $ 2^{\frac{n}{\ln n}(1 + o(1))} $ when $ n \to \infty $. The first family of lattices is explicit and is obtained by applying Construction A to a class of Reed-Solomon codes. The second family has subexponential construction complexity and is based on the notion of Sidon sets in finite Abelian groups. The construction based on Sidon sets also gives the highest known asymptotic density of packing discrete…
For a non-decreasing sequence $S = (s_1, \ldots, s_k)$ of positive integers, an $S$-packing edge-coloring of a graph $G$ is a decomposition of edges of $G$ into disjoint sets $E_1, \ldots, E_k$ such that for each $1 \le i \le k$ the distance between any two distinct edges $e_1, e_2 \in E_i$ is at least $s_i+1$. The notion of $S$-packing edge-coloring was first generalized by Gastineau and Togni from its vertex counterpart. They showed that there are subcubic graphs that are not $(1,2,2,2,2,2,2)$-packing (abbreviated to $(1,2^6)$-packing) edge-colorable and asked the question whether every subc…
We construct integer error-correcting codes and covering codes for the limited-magnitude error channel with more than one error. The codes are lattices that pack or cover the space with the appropriate error ball. Some of the constructions attain an asymptotic packing/covering density that is constant. The results are obtained via various methods, including the use of codes in the Hamming metric, modular $B_t$-sequences, $2$-fold Sidon sets, and sets avoiding arithmetic progression.
Two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ on $n$ vertices are said to pack if there exist injective mappings of their vertex sets into $[n]$ such that the images of their edge sets are disjoint. A longstanding conjecture due to Bollobás and Eldridge and, independently, Catlin, asserts that, if $(Δ_1(G)+1) (Δ_2(G)+1) \le n+1$, then $G_1$ and $G_2$ pack. We consider the validity of this assertion under the additional assumption that $G_1$ or $G_2$ has bounded codegree. In particular, we prove for all $t \ge 2$ that, if $G_1$ contains no copy of the complete bipartite graph $K_{2,t}$ and $Δ_1 > 17 t \cdot Δ_2$,…
For $1\leq s_1 \le s_2 \le \ldots \le s_k$ and a graph $G$, a packing $(s_1, s_2, \ldots, s_k)$-coloring of $G$ is a partition of $V(G)$ into sets $V_1, V_2, \ldots, V_k$ such that, for each $1\leq i \leq k$, the distance between any two distinct $x,y\in V_i$ is at least $s_i + 1$. The packing chromatic number, $χ_p(G)$, of a graph $G$ is the smallest $k$ such that $G$ has a packing $(1,2, \ldots, k)$-coloring. It is known that there are trees of maximum degree 4 and subcubic graphs $G$ with arbitrarily large $χ_p(G)$. Recently, there was a series of papers on packing $(s_1, s_2, \ldots, s_k)$…
The packing chromatic number $χ_ρ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest integer $k$ such that the vertex set of $G$ can be partitioned into sets $V_i$, $i\in [k]$, where each $V_i$ is an $i$-packing. In this paper, we investigate for a given triple $(a,b,c)$ of positive integers whether there exists a graph $G$ such that $ω(G) = a$, $χ(G) = b$, and $χ_ρ(G) = c$. If so, we say that $(a, b, c)$ is realizable. It is proved that $b=c\ge 3$ implies $a=b$, and that triples $(2,k,k+1)$ and $(2,k,k+2)$ are not realizable as soon as $k\ge 4$. Some of the obtained results are deduced from the bounds proved…
For a sequence of non-decreasing positive integers $S = (s_1, \ldots, s_k)$, a packing $S$-coloring is a partition of $V(G)$ into sets $V_1, \ldots, V_k$ such that for each $1\leq i \leq k$ the distance between any two distinct $x,y\in V_i$ is at least $s_i+1$. The smallest $k$ such that $G$ has a packing $(1,2, \ldots, k)$-coloring is called the packing chromatic number of $G$ and is denoted by $χ_p(G)$. For a graph $G$, let $D(G)$ denote the graph obtained from $G$ by subdividing every edge. The question whether $χ_p(D(G)) \le 5$ for all subcubic graphs was first asked by Gastineau and Togni…

Suppose $k$ is a positive integer and $\mathcal{X}$ is a $k$-fold packing of the plane by infinitely many arc-connected compact sets, which means that every point of the plane belongs to at most $k$ sets. Suppose there is a function $f(n)=o(n^2)$ with the property that any $n$ members of $\mathcal{X}$ determine at most $f(n)$ holes, which means that the complement of their union has at most $f(n)$ bounded connected components. We use tools from extremal graph theory and the topological Helly theorem to prove that $\mathcal{X}$ can be decomposed into at most $p$ ($1$-fold) packings, where $p$ i…
A $ B_h $ set (or Sidon set of order $ h $) in an Abelian group $ G $ is any subset $ \{b_0, b_1, \ldots,b_{n}\} $ of $ G $ with the property that all the sums $ b_{i_1} + \cdots + b_{i_h} $ are different up to the order of the summands. Let $ ϕ(h,n) $ denote the order of the smallest Abelian group containing a $ B_h $ set of cardinality $ n + 1 $. It is shown that \[ \lim_{h \to \infty} \frac{ ϕ(h,n) }{ h^n } = \frac{1}{n! δ_L(\triangle^n)} , \] where $ δ_L(\triangle^n) $ is the lattice packing density of an $ n $-simplex in Euclidean space. This determines the asymptotics exactly in cases wh…
The construction of optimal line packings in real or complex Euclidean spaces has shown to be a tantalizingly difficult task, because it includes the problem of finding maximal sets of equiangular lines. In the regime where equiangular lines are not possible, some optimal packings are known, for example, those achieving the orthoplex bound related to maximal sets of mutually unbiased bases. In this paper, we investigate the packing of subspaces instead of lines and determine the implications of maximality in this context. We leverage the existence of real or complex maximal mutually unbiased b…
We prove that if $A$ is a Borel set in the plane of equal Hausdorff and packing dimension $s>1$, then the set of pinned distances $\{ |x-y|:y\in A\}$ has full Hausdorff dimension for all $x$ outside of a set of Hausdorff dimension $1$ (in particular, for many $x\in A$). This verifies a strong variant of Falconer's distance set conjecture for sets of equal Hausdorff and packing dimension, outside the endpoint $s=1$.
For points $p_1,\ldots , p_n$ in the unit square $[0,1]^2$, an \emph{anchored rectangle packing} consists of interior-disjoint axis-aligned empty rectangles $r_1,\ldots , r_n\subseteq [0,1]^2$ such that point $p_i$ is a corner of the rectangle $r_i$ (that is, $r_i$ is \emph{anchored} at $p_i$) for $i=1,\ldots, n$. We show that for every set of $n$ points in $[0,1]^2$, there is an anchored rectangle packing of area at least $7/12-O(1/n)$, and for every $n\in \mathbf{N}$, there are point sets for which the area of every anchored rectangle packing is at most $2/3$. The maximum area of an anchored…
This work establishes the complexity class of several instances of the S-packing coloring problem: for a graph G, a positive integer k and a non decreasing list of integers S = (s\_1 , ..., s\_k ), G is S-colorable, if its vertices can be partitioned into sets S\_i , i = 1,... , k, where each S\_i being a s\_i -packing (a set of vertices at pairwise distance greater than s\_i). For a list of three integers, a dichotomy between NP-complete problems and polynomial time solvable problems is determined for subcubic graphs. Moreover, for an unfixed size of list, the complexity of the S-packing colo…

The Two-dimensional Bin Packing Problem calls for packing a set of rectangular items into a minimal set of larger rectangular bins. Items must be packed with their edges parallel to the borders of the bins, cannot be rotated and cannot overlap among them. The problem is of interest because it models many real-world applications, including production, warehouse management and transportation. It is, unfortunately, very difficult, and instances with just 40 items are unsolved to proven optimality, despite many attempts, since the 1990s. In this paper, we solve the problem with a combinatorial Ben…
We study the relationship between the sizes of two sets $B, S\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ when $B$ contains either the whole boundary, or the four vertices, of a square with axes-parallel sides and center in every point of $S$, where size refers to one of cardinality, Hausdorff dimension, packing dimension, or upper or lower box dimension. Perhaps surprinsingly, the results vary depending on the notion of size under consideration. For example, we construct a compact set $B$ of Hausdorff dimension $1$ which contains the boundary of an axes-parallel square with center in every point $[0,1]^2$, but prove…
