Edmonds' fundamental theorem on arborescences characterizes the existence of $k$ pairwise arc-disjoint spanning arborescences with prescribed root sets in a digraph. In this paper, we study the problem of packing branchings in digraphs under cardinality constraints on their root sets by arborescence augmentation. Let $D=(V+x,A)$ be a digraph, $\mathcal{P}=$ $\{I_{1}, \ldots, I_{l} \}$ be a partition of $[k]$, $c_{1}, \ldots, c_{l}, c'_{1}, \ldots, c'_{l}$ be nonnegative integers such that $c_α \leq c'_α$ for $α\in [l]$, $F_{1}, \ldots, F_{k}$ be $k$ arc-disjoint $x$-arborescences in $D$ such that $\sum_{i \in I_α}d_{F_{i}}^{+}(x)$ $\leq c'_α$ for $α\in [l]$. We give a characterization on when $F_{1}, \ldots, F_{k}$ can be completed to arc-disjoint spanning $x$-arborescences $F^{*}_{1}, \ldots, F^{*}_{k}$ such that for any $α\in [l]$, $ c_α \leq \sum_{i \in I_α}d^{+}_{F^{*}_{i}}(x)$ $ \leq c'_α$.
We prove a common generalization of the maximal independent arborescence packing theorem of Cs. Király and two of our earlier works about packing branchings in infinite digraphs.
The problem considered is the splittable bin packing with cardinality constraint. It is a variant of the bin packing problem where items are allowed to be split into parts but the number of parts in each bin is at most a given upper bound. Two versions of the splittable bin packing with cardinality constraint have been studied in the literature. Among these variants we consider the dual one where the objective is to minimize the maximum bin size while packing (may be fractional) the items to a given set of bins. We exhibit an EPTAS for the dual problem when the cardinality upper bound is part …
Given a digraph $D=(V,A)$, a set $B\subset V$ is a packing set in $D$ if there are no arcs joining vertices of $B$ and for any two vertices $x,y\in B$ the sets of in-neighbors of $x$ and $y$ are disjoint. The set $S$ is a dominating set (an open dominating set) in $D$ if every vertex not in $S$ (in $V$) has an in-neighbor in $S$. Moreover, a dominating set $S$ is called a total dominating set if the subgraph induced by $S$ has no isolated vertices. The packing sets of maximum cardinality and the (total, open) dominating sets of minimum cardinality in digraphs are studied in this article. We pr…
A set $P$ of vertices in a graph $G$ is an open packing if no two distinct vertices in $P$ have a common neighbor. Among all maximal open packings in $G$, the smallest cardinality is denoted $ρ^{\rm o}_L(G)$ and the largest cardinality is $ρ^{\rm o}(G)$. There exist graphs for which these two invariants are arbitrarily far apart. In this paper we begin the investigation of the class of graphs that have one size of maximal open packings. By presenting a method of constructing such graphs we show that every graph is the induced subgraph of a graph in this class. The main result of the paper is a…
We consider a known variant of bin packing called {\it cardinality constrained bin packing}, also called {\it bin packing with cardinality constraints} (BPCC). In this problem, there is a parameter k\geq 2, and items of rational sizes in [0,1] are to be packed into bins, such that no bin has more than k items or total size larger than 1. The goal is to minimize the number of bins. A recently introduced concept, called the price of clustering, deals with inputs that are presented in a way that they are split into clusters. Thus, an item has two attributes which are its size and its cluster. The…
A set $S\subseteq V$ is $α$-dominating if for all $v\in V-S$, $|N(v) \cap S | \geq α|N(v)|.$ The $α$-domination number of $G$ equals the minimum cardinality of an $α$-dominating set $S$ in $G$. Since being introduced by Dunbar, et al. in 2000, $α$-domination has been studied for various graphs and a variety of bounds have been developed. In this paper, we propose a new parameter derived by flipping the inequality in the definition of $α$-domination. We say a set $S \subset V$ is a $β$-packing set of a graph $G$ if $S$ is a proper, maximal set having the property that for all vertices $v \in V-…
We consider the problem of finding an integral packing of branchings in a capacitated digraph with root-set demands. Schrijver described an algorithm that returns a packing with at most m+n^3+r branchings that makes at most m(m+n^3+r) calls to an oracle that basically computes a minimum cut, where n is the number of vertices, m is the number of arcs and r is the number of root-sets of the input digraph. In this work we provide an algorithm, inspired on ideas of Schrijver and on an paper of Gabow and Manu, that returns a packing with at most m+r-1 branchings and makes at most 2n+m+r-1 oracle ca…
Let $G$ and $H$ be graphs. We say that $P$ is an $H$-packing of $G$ if $P$ is a set of edge-disjoint copies of $H$ in $G$. An $H$-packing $P$ is maximal if there is no other $H$-packing of $G$ that properly contains $P$. Packings of maximum cardinality have been studied intensively, with several recent breakthrough results. Here, we consider minimum cardinality maximal packings. An $H$-packing $P$ is clumsy if it is maximal of minimum size. Let $cl(G,H)$ be the size of a clumsy $H$-packing of $G$. We provide nontrivial bounds for $cl(G,H)$, and in many cases asymptotically determine $cl(G,H)$ …
In this paper, we introduce the $b$-bibranching problem in digraphs, which is a common generalization of the bibranching and $b$-branching problems. The bibranching problem, introduced by Schrijver (1982), is a common generalization of the branching and bipartite edge cover problems. Previous results on bibranchings include polynomial algorithms, a linear programming formulation with total dual integrality, a packing theorem, and an M-convex submodular flow formulation. The $b$-branching problem, recently introduced by Kakimura, Kamiyama, and Takazawa (2018), is a generalization of the branchi…
We give an "excluded minor" and a "structural" characterization of digraphs D that have the property that for every subdigraph H of D, the maximum number of disjoint circuits in H is equal to the minimum cardinality of a subset T of V(H) such that H\T is acyclic.
In this paper, we characterize a mixed graph $F$ which contains $k$ edge and arc disjoint spanning mixed arborescences $F_{1}, \ldots, F_{k}$, such that for each $v \in V(F)$, the cardinality of $\{i \in [k]: v \text{ is the root of } F_{i}\}$ lies in some prescribed interval. This generalizes both Nash-Williams and Tutte's theorem on spanning tree packing for undirected graphs and the previous characterization on digraphs which was given by Cai [in: Arc-disjoint arborescences of digraphs, J. Graph Theory 7(2) (1983), 235-240] and Frank [in: On disjoint trees and arborescences, Algebraic Metho…
Every set of natural numbers determines a generating function convergent for $q \in (-1,1)$ whose behavior as $q \rightarrow 1^-$ determines a germ. These germs admit a natural partial ordering that can be used to compare sizes of sets of natural numbers in a manner that generalizes both cardinality of finite sets and density of infinite sets. For any finite set $D$ of positive integers, call a set $S$ "$D$-avoiding" if no two elements of $S$ differ by an element of $D$. It is shown that any $D$-avoiding set that is maximal in the class of $D$-avoiding sets (with respect to germ-ordering) is u…
Given a simple graph $G=(V,E)$, a subset of $E$ is called a triangle cover if it intersects each triangle of $G$. Let $ν_t(G)$ and $τ_t(G)$ denote the maximum number of pairwise edge-disjoint triangles in $G$ and the minimum cardinality of a triangle cover of $G$, respectively. Tuza conjectured in 1981 that $τ_t(G)/ν_t(G)\le2$ holds for every graph $G$. In this paper, using a hypergraph approach, we design polynomial-time combinatorial algorithms for finding small triangle covers. These algorithms imply new sufficient conditions for Tuza's conjecture on covering and packing triangles. More pre…

We extend Edmonds' Branching Theorem to locally finite infinite digraphs. As examples of Oxley or Aharoni and Thomassen show, this cannot be done using ordinary arborescences, whose underlying graphs are trees. Instead we introduce the notion of pseudo-arborescences and prove a corresponding packing result. Finally, we verify some tree-like properties for these objects, but give also an example that their underlying graphs do in general not correspond to topological trees in the Freudenthal compactification of the underlying multigraph of the digraph.
Given a digraph $G = (V_G, A_G)$, a \emph{branching} in $G$ is a set of arcs $B \subseteq A_G$ such that the underlying undirected graph spanned by $B$ is acyclic and each node in $G$ is entered (\emph{covered}) by at most one arc from $B$. Tarjan developed efficient algorithms (based on the cycle contraction technique) for the following problem: given a digraph $G$ with a \emph{weight} function $w \colon A_G \to \R$, find a branching $B$ of the minimum weight $w(B) := \sum_{a \in B} w(a)$ among all branchings with the maximum ardinality $\abs{B}$. We generalize this notion as follows: for a d…
In this paper, we introduce the concept of $b$-branchings in digraphs, which is a generalization of branchings serving as a counterpart of $b$-matchings. Here $b$ is a positive integer vector on the vertex set of a digraph, and a $b$-branching is defined as a common independent set of two matroids defined by $b$: an arc set is a $b$-branching if it has at most $b(v)$ arcs sharing the terminal vertex $v$, and it is an independent set of a certain sparsity matroid defined by $b$. We demonstrate that $b$-branchings yield an appropriate generalization of branchings by extending several classical r…
A $ B_h $ set (or Sidon set of order $ h $) in an Abelian group $ G $ is any subset $ \{b_0, b_1, \ldots,b_{n}\} $ of $ G $ with the property that all the sums $ b_{i_1} + \cdots + b_{i_h} $ are different up to the order of the summands. Let $ ϕ(h,n) $ denote the order of the smallest Abelian group containing a $ B_h $ set of cardinality $ n + 1 $. It is shown that \[ \lim_{h \to \infty} \frac{ ϕ(h,n) }{ h^n } = \frac{1}{n! δ_L(\triangle^n)} , \] where $ δ_L(\triangle^n) $ is the lattice packing density of an $ n $-simplex in Euclidean space. This determines the asymptotics exactly in cases wh…
We study the relationship between the sizes of two sets $B, S\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ when $B$ contains either the whole boundary, or the four vertices, of a square with axes-parallel sides and center in every point of $S$, where size refers to one of cardinality, Hausdorff dimension, packing dimension, or upper or lower box dimension. Perhaps surprinsingly, the results vary depending on the notion of size under consideration. For example, we construct a compact set $B$ of Hausdorff dimension $1$ which contains the boundary of an axes-parallel square with center in every point $[0,1]^2$, but prove…
We study three problems introduced by Bang-Jensen and Yeo [Theor. Comput. Sci. 2015] and by Bang-Jensen, Havet, and Yeo [Discret. Appl. Math. 2016] about finding disjoint "balanced" spanning rooted substructures in graphs and digraphs, which generalize classic packing problems. Namely, given a positive integer $k$, a digraph $D=(V,A)$, and a root $r \in V$, we consider the problem of finding two arc-disjoint $k$-safe spanning $r$-arborescences and the problem of finding two arc-disjoint $(r,k)$-flow branchings. We show that both these problems are FPT with parameter $k$, improving on existing …
