An extremal quasiconformal homeomorphisms in a class of homeomorphisms between two CR 3-manifolds is an one which has the least conformal distortion among this class. This paper studies extremal quasiconformal homeomorphisms between CR 3-manifolds which admit transversal CR circle actions. Equivariant $K$-quasiconformal homeomorphisms are characterized by an area-preserving property and the $K$-quasiconformality of their quotient maps on the spaces of $S^1$-orbits. A large family of invariant CR structures on $S^3$ is constructed so that the extremal quasiconformal homeomorphisms among the equivariant mappings between them and the standard structure are completely determined. These homeomorphisms also serve as examples showing that the extremal quasiconformal homeomorphisms between two invariant CR manifolds are not necessarily equivariant.
This paper first studies the regularity of conformal homeomorphisms on smooth locally embeddable strongly pseudoconvex CR manifolds. Then moduli of curve families are used to estimate the maximal dilatations of quasiconformal homeomorphisms. On certain CR 3-manifolds, namely, CR circle bundles over flat tori, extremal quasiconformal homeomorphisms in some homotopy classes are constructed. These extremal mappings have similar behaviors to Teichmüller mappings on Riemann surfaces.
The global homeomorphism theorem for quasiconformal maps describes the following specifically higher-dimensional phenomenon: {\em Locally invertible quasiconformal mapping $f: {\R}^{n} \to {\R}^{n}$ is globally invertible provided $n > 2$.} We prove the following operator version of the global homeomorphism theorem. {\em If the operator $ f: H \to H $ acting in the Hilbert space $ H $ is locally invertible and is an operator of bounded distortion, then it is globally invertible.}
We investigate strongly symmetric homeomorphisms of the real line which appear in harmonic analysis aspects of quasiconformal Teichmüller theory. An element in this class can be characterized by a property that it can be extended quasiconformally to the upper half-plane so that its complex dilatation induces a vanishing Carleson measure. However, differently from the case on the unit circle, strongly symmetric homeomorphisms on the real line are not preserved under either the composition or the inversion. In this paper, we present the difference and the relation between these two cases. In par…
We give an example of a totally disconnected set E in R^3 which is not removable for quasiconformal homeomorphisms, i.e., there is a homeomorphism f of R^3 to itself which is quasiconformal off E, but not quasiconformal on all of R^3. The set E may be taken with Hausdorff dimension 2. The construction also gives a non-removable set for locally biLipschitz homeomorphisms.
Quasiconformal homeomorphisms of the unit ball $B^n$ of ${\mathbb R}^n, n \ge 3,$ onto itself with identity boundary values are studied. A spatial analogue of Teichmüller's theorem is proved.
Suppose that $E$ and $E'$ denote real Banach spaces with dimension at least $2$ and that $D\subset E$ and $D'\subset E'$ are domains. In this paper, we establish, in terms of the $j_D$ metric, a necessary and sufficient condition for the homeomorphism $f: E \to E'$ to be FQC. Moreover, we give, in terms of the $j_D$ metric, a sufficient condition for the homeomorphism $f: D\to D'$ to be FQC. On the other hand, we show that this condition is not necessary.
Let $D$ and $Ω$ be Jordan domains with Dini's smooth boundaries and and let $f:D\mapsto Ω$ be a harmonic homeomorphism. The object of the paper is to prove the following result: If $f$ is quasiconformal, then $f$ is Lipschitz. This extends some recent results, where stronger assumptions on the boundary are imposed, and somehow is optimal, since it coincides with the best condition for Lipschitz behavior of conformal mappings in the plane and conformal parametrization of minimal surfaces.
We consider a class of so-called ring $Q$-mappings that are a generalization of quasiconformal mappings. Theorems on the local behavior of inverse maps of this class are obtained. Under certain conditions, we also investigated the behavior of families of these mappings in the closure of the domain
We give upper bounds on the principal curvatures of a maximal surface of nonpositive curvature in three-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space, which only depend on the width of the convex hull of the surface. Moreover, given a quasisymmetric homeomorphism $ϕ$, we study the relation between the width of the convex hull of the graph of $ϕ$, as a curve in the boundary of infinity of Anti-de Sitter space, and the cross-ratio norm of $ϕ$. As an application, we prove that if $ϕ$ is a quasisymmetric homeomorphism of $\mathbb{R}\mathrm{P}^1$ with cross-ratio norm $||ϕ||$, then $\ln K\leq C||ϕ||$, where $K$…
We prove that if $f:\mathbb{B}^n \to \mathbb{B}^n$, for $n\geq 2$, is a homeomorphism with bounded skew over all equilateral hyperbolic triangles, then $f$ is in fact quasiconformal. Conversely, we show that if $f:\mathbb{B}^n \to \mathbb{B}^n$ is quasiconformal then $f$ is $η$-quasisymmetric in the hyperbolic metric, where $η$ depends only on $n$ and $K$. We obtain the same result for hyperbolic $n$-manifolds. Analogous results in $\mathbb{R}^n$, and metric spaces that behave like $\mathbb{R}^n$, are known, but as far as we are aware, these are the first such results in the hyperbolic setting…
We provide sufficient conditions so that a homeomorphism of the real line or of the circle admits an extension to a mapping of finite distortion in the upper half-plane or the disk, respectively. Moreover, we can ensure that the quasiconformal dilatation of the extension satisfies certain integrability conditions, such as $p$-integrability or exponential integrability. Mappings satisfying the latter integrability condition are also known as David homeomorphisms. Our extension operator is the same as the one used by Beurling and Ahlfors in their celebrated work. We prove an optimal bound for th…
We study metric spheres Z obtained by gluing two hemispheres of the Euclidean sphere along an orientation-preserving homeomorphism mapping the equator onto itself, where the distance on Z is the canonical distance that is locally isometric to the spherical distance off the seam. We show that if Z is quasiconformally equivalent to the sphere, in the geometric sense, then g is a welding homeomorphism with conformally removable welding curves. We also show that g is bi-Lipschitz if and only if Z has a 1-quasiconformal parametrization whose Jacobian is comparable to the Jacobian of a quasiconforma…
We consider some class of homeomorphisms of domains of Euclidean space, which are more general than quasiconformal mappings. For these homeomorphisms, we have obtained theorems on local behavior of it's inverse mappings in a given domain. Under some additional conditions, we proved results about behavior of mappings mentioned above in the closure of the domain.
This paper concerns with deformations of noncompact complex hyperbolic manifolds (with locally Bergman metric), varieties of discrete representations of their fundamental groups into $PU(n,1)$ and the problem of (quasiconformal) stability of deformations of such groups and manifolds in the sense of L.Bers and D.Sullivan. Despite Goldman-Millson-Yue rigidity results for such complex manifolds of infinite volume, we present different classes of such manifolds that allow non-trivial (quasi-Fuchsian) deformations and point out that such flexible manifolds have a common feature being Stein spaces. …
We interpolate a new family of Teichmüller spaces $T_{\sharp}^X$ between the universal Teichmüller space $T$ and its little subspace $T_0$, which we call the Teichmüller space of piecewise symmetric homeomorphisms. This is defined by prescribing a subset $X$ of the unit circle. The inclusion relation of $X$ induces a natural inclusion of $T_{\sharp}^X$, and an approximation of $T$ is given by an increasing sequence of $T_{\sharp}^X$. In this paper, we discuss the fundamental properties of $T_{\sharp}^X$ from the viewpoint of the quasiconformal theory of Teichmüller spaces. We also consider the…
Quasiconformal homeomorphisms of the whole space Rn, onto itself normalized at one or two points are studied. In particular, the stability theory, the case when the maximal dilatation tends to 1, is in the focus. Our main result provides a spatial analogue of a classical result due to Teichmüller. Unlike Teichmüller's result, our bounds are explicit. Explicit bounds are based on two sharp well-known distortion results: the quasiconformal Schwarz lemma and the bound for linear dilatation. Moreover, Bernoulli type inequalities and asymptotically sharp bounds for special functions involving compl…
For a given $ε>0$, we show that there exist two finite index subgroups of $PSL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ which are $(1+ε)$-quasisymmetrically conjugated and the conjugation homeomorphism is not conformal. This implies that for any $ε>0$ there are two finite regular covers of the Modular once punctured torus $T_0$ (or just the Modular torus) and a $(1+ε)$-quasiconformal between them that is not homotopic to a conformal map. As an application of the above results, we show that the orbit of the basepoint in the Teichmüller space $T(§)$ of the punctured solenoid $§$ under the action of the corresponding Modu…
This is a mathematical commentary on Teichm{ü}ller's paper ``Bestimmung der extremalen quasikonformen Abbildungen bei geschlossenen orientierten Riemannschen Fl{ä}chen'' (Determination of extremal quasiconformal maps of closed oriented Riemann surfaces). This paper is among the last (and may be the last one) that Teichm{ü}ller wrote on the theory of moduli. It contains the proof of the so-called Teichm{ü}ller existence theorem for a closed surface of genus at least 2. For this proof, the author defines a mapping between a space of equivalence classes of marked Riemann surfaces (the Teichm{ü}ll…
