Stieltjes' work on continued fractions and the orthogonal polynomials related to continued fraction expansions is summarized and an attempt is made to describe the influence of Stieltjes' ideas and work in research done after his death, with an emphasis on the theory of orthogonal polynomials.
We obtain a new multiplicative decomposition of the resolvent matrix of the truncated Hausdorff matrix moment (THMM) problem in the case of an odd and even number of moments via new Dyukarev-Stieltjes matrix (DSM) parameters. Explicit interrelations between new DSM parameters and orthogonal matrix polynomials on a finite interval $[a,b]$, as well as the Schur complements of the block Hankel matrices constructed through the moments of the THMM problem are given. Additionally, the extremal solutions of the THMM problem are represented via matrix continued fractions in terms of the DSM parameters…
Full indefinite Stieltjes moment problem is studied via the step-by-step Schur algorithm. Naturally associated with indefinite Stieltjes moment problem are generalized Stieltjes continued fraction and a system of difference equations, which, in turn, lead to factorization of resolvent matrices of indefinite Stieltjes moment problem. A criterion for such a problem to be indeterminate in terms of continued fraction is found and a complete description of its solutions is given in the indeterminate case. Explicit formulae for diagonal and sub-diagonal Padé approximants for formal power series corr…
We define an infinite sequence of generalizations, parametrized by an integer $m \ge 1$, of the Stieltjes--Rogers and Thron--Rogers polynomials; they arise as the power-series expansions of some branched continued fractions, and as the generating polynomials for $m$-Dyck and $m$-Schröder paths with height-dependent weights. We prove that all of these sequences of polynomials are coefficientwise Hankel-totally positive, jointly in all the (infinitely many) indeterminates. We then apply this theory to prove the coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity for combinatorially interesting sequences of …
The generating function of Stieltjes-Carlitz polynomials is a solution of Heun's differential equation and using this relation Carlitz was the first to get exact closed forms for some Heun functions. Similarly the associated Stieltjes-Carlitz polynomials lead to a new differential equation which we call associated Heun. Thanks to the link with orthogonal polynomials we are able to deduce two integral relations connecting associated Heun functions with different parameters and to exhibit the set of associated Heun functions which generalize Carlitz's. Part of these results were used by the auth…
In a note at the end of his paper {\it Recherches sur les fractions continues}, Stieltjes gave a necessary and sufficient condition when a continued fraction is represented by a meromorphic function. This result is related to the study of compact Jacobi matrices. We indicate how this notion was developped and used since Stieltjes, with special attention to the results by M. G. Krein. We also pay attention to the perturbation of a constant Jacobi matrix by a compact Jacobi matrix, work which basically started with Blumenthal in 1889 and which now is known as the theory for the class $M(a,b)$.
We look at some extensions of the Stieltjes-Wigert weight functions. First we replace the variable x by x^2 in a family of weight functions given by Askey in 1989 and we show that the recurrence coefficients of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials can be expressed in terms of a solution of the q-discrete Painlevé III equation. Next we consider the q-Laguerre or generalized Stieltjes-Wigert weight functions with a quadratic transformation and derive recursive equations for the recurrence coefficients of the orthogonal polynomials. These turn out to be related to the q-discrete Painlevé V eq…
We construct new elliptic solutions of the restricted Toda chain. These solutions give rise to a new explicit class of orthogonal polynomials which can be considered as a generalization of the Stieltjes-Carlitz elliptic polynomials. Relations between characteristic (i.e. positive definite) functions, Toda chain and orthogonal polynomials are developed in order to derive main properties of these polynomials. The recurrence coefficients and the weight function of these polynomials are expressed explicitly. In the degenerated cases of the elliptic functions the modified Meixner polynomials and th…
Polynomial solutions to the generalized Lamé equation, the Stieltjes polynomials, and the associated Van Vleck polynomials have been studied since the 1830's in various contexts including the solution of Laplace equations on an ellipsoid. Recently there has been renewed interest in the distribution of the zeros of Van Vleck polynomials as the degree of the corresponding Stieltjes polynomials increases. In this paper we show that the zeros of Van Vleck polynomials corresponding to Stieltjes polynomials of successive degrees interlace. We also show that the spectral polynomials formed from the V…
In this work we study the Plancherel-Rotach type asymptotics for Stieltjes-Wigert orthogonal polynomials with complex scaling. The main term of the asymptotics contains Ramanujan function $A_{q}(z)$ for the scaling parameter on the vertical line $\Re(s)=2$, while the main term of the asymptotics involves the theta functions for the scaling parameter in the strip $0<\Re(s)<2$. In the latter case the number theoretical property of the scaling parameter completely determines the order of the error term. $ $ These asymptotic formulas may provide some insights to some new random matrix model and al…
We study orthogonal polynomials associated with a continued fraction due to Hirschhorn. Hirschhorn's continued fraction contains as special cases the famous Rogers--Ramanujan continued fraction and two of Ramanujan's generalizations. The orthogonality measure of the set of polynomials obtained has an absolutely continuous component. We find generating functions, asymptotic formulas, orthogonality relations, and the Stieltjes transform of the measure. Using standard generating function techniques, we show how to obtain formulas for the convergents of Ramanujan's continued fractions, including a…
Polynomial solutions to the generalized Lamé equation, the \textit{Stieltjes polynomials}, and the associated \textit{Van Vleck polynomials} have been studied since the 1830's, beginning with Lamé in his studies of the Laplace equation on an ellipsoid, and in an ever widening variety of applications since. In this paper we show how the zeros of Stieltjes polynomials are distributed and present two new interlacing theorems. We arrange the Stieltjes polynomials according to their Van Vleck zeros and show, firstly, that the zeros of successive Stieltjes polynomials of the same degree interlace, a…
The connection between continued fractions and orthogonality which is familiar for $J$-fractions and $T$-fractions is extended to what we call $R$-fractions of type I and II. These continued fractions are associated with recurrence relations that correspond to multipoint rational interpolants. A Favard type theorem is proved for each type. We then study explicit models which lead to biorthogonal rational functions.
In this paper we give a characterization of some classical q-orthogonal polynomials in terms of a difference property of the associated Stieltjes function, i.e this function solves a first order non-homogeneous q-difference equation. The solutions of the aforementioned q-difference equation (given in terms of hypergeometric series) for some canonical cases, namely, q-Charlier, q-Kravchuk, q-Meixner and q-Hahn are worked out.
We show connections between a special type of addition formulas and a theorem of Stieltjes and Rogers. We use different techniques to derive the desirable addition formulas. We apply our approach to derive special addition theorems for Bessel functions and confluent hypergeometric functions. We also derive several additions theorems for basic hypergeometric functions. Applications to the evaluation of Hankel determinants are also given .
It is stated and proved a characterization theorem for Laguerre-Hahn orthogonal polynomials on non-uniform lattices. This theorem proves the equivalence between the Riccati equation for the formal Stieltjes function, linear first-order difference relations for the orthogonal polynomials as well as for the associated polynomials of the first kind, and linear first-order difference relations for the functions of the second kind.
We examine a special linear combination of balanced very-well-poised $\tphia$ basic hypergeometric series that is known to satisfy a transformation. We call this $Φ$ and show that it satisfies certain three-term contiguous relations. From two sets of contiguous relations for $Φ$ we obtain fifty-six pairwise linearly independent solutions to a three-term recurrence that generalizes the recurrence for Askey-Wilson polynomials. The associated continued fraction is evaluated using Pincherle's theorem. From this continued fraction we are able to derive a discrete system of biorthogonal rational fun…
Orthogonal q-polynomials associated with q-Laguerre-Hahn form will be studied as a generalization of the q-semiclassical forms via a suitable q-difference equation. The concept of class and a criterion to determinate it will be given. The q-Riccati equation satisfied by the corresponding formal Stieltjes series is obtained. Also, the structure relation is established. Some illustrative examples are highlighted.
In 1986 J. Nuttall published in Constructive Approximation the paper "Asymptotics of generalized Jacobi polynomials", where with his usual insight he studied the behavior of the denominators ("generalized Jacobi polynomials") and the remainders of the Pade approximants to a special class of algebraic functions with 3 branch points. 25 years later we try to look at this problem from a modern perspective. On one hand, the generalized Jacobi polynomials constitute an instance of the so-called Heine-Stieltjes polynomials, i.e. they are solutions of linear ODE with polynomial coefficients. On the o…
We study a continued fraction due to Ramanujan, that he recorded as Entry 12 in Chapter 16 of his second notebook. It is presented in Part III of Berndt's volumes on Ramanujan's notebooks. We give two alternate approaches to proving Ramanujan's Entry 12, one using a method of Euler, and another using the theory of orthogonal polynomials. We consider a natural generalization of Entry 12 suggested by the theory of orthogonal polynomials.
We establish the Plancherel-Rotach-type asymptotics around the largest zero (the soft edge asymptotics) for some classes of polynomials satisfying three-term recurrence relations with exponentially increasing coefficients. As special cases, our results include this type of asymptotics for q^{-1}-Hermite polynomials of Askey, Ismail and Masson, q-Laguerre polynomials, and the Stieltjes-Wigert polynomials. We also introduce a one parameter family of solutions to the q-difference equation of the Ramanujan function.
In this work we investigate Plancherel-Rotach type asymptotics for some $q$-series as $q\to1$. These $q$-series generalize Ramanujan function $A_{q}(z)$; Jackson's $q$-Bessel function $J_ν^{(2)}$(z;q), Ismail-Masson orthogonal polynomials($q^{-1}$-Hermite polynomials) $h_{n}(x|q)$, Stieltjes-Wigert orthogonal polynomials $S_{n}(x;q)$, $q$-Laguerre orthogonal polynomials $L_{n}^{(α)}(x;q)$ and confluent basic hypergeometric series.
In this paper, we associate a class of Hurwitz matrix polynomials with Stieltjes positive definite matrix sequences. This connection leads to an extension of two classical criteria of Hurwitz stability for real polynomials to matrix polynomials: tests for Hurwitz stability via positive definiteness of block-Hankel matrices built from matricial Markov parameters and via matricial Stieltjes continued fractions. We obtain further conditions for Hurwitz stability in terms of block-Hankel minors and quasiminors, which may be viewed as a weak version of the total positivity criterion.
The main objects of the investigation presented in this paper are branched-continued-fraction representations of ratios of contiguous hypergeometric series and type II multiple orthogonal polynomials on the step-line with respect to linear functionals or measures whose moments are ratios of products of Pochhammer symbols. This is an interesting case study of the recently found connection between multiple orthogonal polynomials and branched continued fractions that gives a clear example of how this connection leads to considerable advances on both topics. We obtain new results about generating …
Let dμ(t) be a probability measure on [0,+\infty) such that its moments are finite. Then the Cauchy-Stieltjes transform S of dμ(t) is a Stieltjes function, which admits an expansion into a Stieltjes continued fraction. In the present paper, we consider a matrix interpretation of the unwrapping transformation from S(λ) to λS(λ^2), which is intimately related to the simplest case of polynomial mappings. More precisely, it is shown that this transformation is essentially a Darboux transformation of the underlying Jacobi matrix. Moreover, in this scheme, the Chihara construction of solutions to th…
In this paper we fully describe functions generating the infinite totally nonnegative Hurwitz matrices. In particular, we generalize the well-known result by Asner and Kemperman on the total nonnegativity of the Hurwitz matrices of real stable polynomials. An alternative criterion for entire functions to generate a Pólya frequency sequence is also obtained. The results are based on a connection between a factorization of totally nonnegative matrices of the Hurwitz type and the expansion of Stieltjes meromorphic functions into Stieltjes continued fractions (regular $C$-fractions with positive c…
We extend the close interplay between continued fractions, orthogonal polynomials, and Gaussian quadrature rules to several variables in a special but natural setting which we characterize in terms of moment sequences. The crucial condition for the characterization is the commutativity of the multiplication operators on finite polynomial subspaces modulo an ideal. Moreover, starting from the orthogonal polynomials or the three-term recurrence, our method constructs a sequence of moment sequences that provides an approximation of the maximal order for recovering the moment sequence that defines…
We analyze the effect of symmetrization in the theory of multiple orthogonal polynomials. For a symmetric sequence of type II multiple orthogonal polynomials satisfying a high-term recurrence relation, we fully characterize the Weyl function associated to the corresponding block Jacobi matrix as well as the Stieltjes matrix function. Next, from an arbitrary sequence of type II multiple orthogonal polynomials with respect to a set of d linear functionals, we obtain a total of d+1 sequences of type II multiple orthogonal polynomials, which can be used to construct a new sequence of symmetric typ…
A new approach to the Euler-Bernoulli beam based on an inhomogeneous matrix string problem is presented. Three ramifications of the approach are developed: (1) motivated by an analogy with the Camassa-Holm equation a class of isospectral deformations of the beam problem is formulated; (2) a reformulation of the matrix string problem in terms of a certain compact operator is used to obtain basic spectral properties of the inhomogeneous matrix string problem with Dirichlet boundary conditions; (3) the inverse problem is solved for the special case of a discrete Euler-Bernoulli beam. The solution…
The generalized Stieltjes--Wigert polynomials depending on parameters 0\le p<1 and 0<q<1 are discussed. By removing the mass at zero of the N-extremal solution concentrated in the zeros of the D-function from the Nevanlinna parametrization, we obtain a discrete measure μ^M which is uniquely determined by its moments. We calculate the coefficients of the corresponding orthonormal polynomials (P^M_n). As noticed by Chihara, these polynomials are the shell polynomials corresponding to the maximal parameter sequence for a certain chain sequence. We also find the minimal parameter sequence, as well…
Sigmoid functions play an important role in many areas of applied mathematics, including machine learning, population dynamics and probability. We place the study of sigmoid functions in the context of the derivative sub-group of the group of exponential Riordan arrays. Links to families of polynomials are drawn, and it is shown that in some cases these polynomials are orthogonal. In the non-orthogonal case, transformations are given that produce orthgonal systems. Alternative means of characterisation are given, based on the production (Stieltjes) matrix associated to the relevant Riordan arr…
Hermann Minkowski introduced a function in 1904 which maps quadratic irrational numbers to rational numbers and this function is now known as Minkowski's question mark function since Minkowski used the notation $?(x)$. This function is a distribution function on $[0,1]$ which defines a singular continuous measure with support $[0,1]$. Our interest is in the (monic) orthogonal polynomials $(P_n)_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ for the Minkowski measure and in particular in the behavior of the recurrence coefficients of the three term recurrence relation. We will give some numerical experiments using the di…
We are studying here a family of probability density functions indexed by a real parameter, and constructed from homographic relations between associated Stieltjes transforms. From the analysis of orthogonal polynomials we deduce a family of isometries in relation to the classical operators creating secondary polynomials and we give an application to the explicit resolution of specific integral equations.
In the framework of continued fraction expansions of Stieltjes transforms, we consider shifting of semicircular laws. The continuous part of the associated measure admits a density function which is the quotient of semicircular one by a polynomial. We study how this polynomial denominator determines shifted semicircular laws, with explicit descriptions in examples of shifting up to the level of step two.
Spectral and factorization properties of oscillatory matrices leads to a spectral Favard theorem for bounded banded matrices, that admit a positive bidiagonal factorization, in terms of sequences of mixed multiple orthogonal polynomials with respect to a set positive Lebesgue-Stieltjes measures. A mixed multiple Gauss quadrature formula with corresponding degrees of precision is given.
Explicit solutions for the three-term recurrence satisfied by associated continuous dual $q$-Hahn polynomials are obtained. A minimal solution is identified and an explicit expression for the related continued fraction is derived. The absolutely continuous component of the spectral measure is obtained. Eleven limit cases are discussed in some detail. These include associated big $q$-Laguerre , associated Wall, associated Al-Salam-Chihara, associated Al-Salam-Carlitz I, and associated continuous $q$-Hermite polynomials.
Using continued fraction expansions of certain polygamma functions as a main tool, we find orthogonal polynomials with respect to the odd-index Bernoulli polynomials $B_{2k+1}(x)$ and the Euler polynomials $E_{2k+ν}(x)$, for $ν=0, 1, 2$. In the process we also determine the corresponding Jacobi continued fractions (or J-fractions) and Hankel determinants. In all these cases the Hankel determinants are polynomials in $x$ which factor completely over the rationals.
The purpose of the present paper is to investigate some structural and qualitative aspects of two different perturbations of the parameters of $g$-fractions. In this context the concept of \emph{gap} $g$-fractions is introduced. While tail sequences of a continued fraction play a significant role in the first perturbation, Schur fractions are used in the second perturbation of the $g$-parameters that are considered. Illustrations are provided using Gaussian hypergeometric functions. Using a particular gap $g$-fraction, some members of the class of Pick functions are also identified.
A combinatorial theory for type $R_I$ orthogonal polynomials is given. The ingredients include weighted generalized Motzkin paths, moments, continued fractions, determinants, and histories. Several explicit examples in the Askey scheme are given.
We consider orthogonal polynomials p_n with respect to an exponential weight function w(x) = exp(-P(x)). The related equations for the recurrence coefficients have been explored by many people, starting essentially with Laguerre [49], in order to study special continued fractions, recurrence relations, and various asymptotic expansions (G. Freud's contribution [28, 56]). Most striking example is n = 2tw_n + w_n(w_n+1 + w_n + w_n-1) for the recurrence coefficients p_n+1 = xp_n - w_np_n-1 of the orthogonal polynomials related to the weight w(x) = exp(-4(tx^3 + x^4)) (notation of [26, pp. 34-36])…
In this work we investigate the asymptotics for Euler's $q$-Exponential $E_{q}(z)$, $q$-Gamma function $Γ_{q}(z)$, Ramanujan's function $A_{q}(z)$, Jackson's $q$-Bessel function $J_ν^{(2)}$(z;q) of second kind, Stieltjes-Wigert orthogonal polynomials $S_{n}(x;q)$ and $q$-Laguerre polynomials $L_{n}^{(α)}(x;q)$ as $q$ approaching 1.
We establish a hierarchy of weighted majorization relations for the singularities of generalized Lamé equations and the zeros of their Van Vleck and Heine-Stieltjes polynomials as well as for multiparameter spectral polynomials of higher Lamé operators. These relations translate into natural dilation and subordination properties in the Choquet order for certain probability measures associated with the aforementioned polynomials. As a consequence we obtain new inequalities for the moments and logarithmic potentials of the corresponding root-counting measures and their weak-$^*$ limits in the se…
This paper aims to clarify certain aspects of the relations between birth-death processes, measures solving a Stieltjes moment problem, and sets of parameters defining polynomial sequences that are orthogonal with respect to such a measure. Besides giving an overview of the basic features of these relations, revealed to a large extent by Karlin and McGregor, we investigate a duality concept for birth-death processes introduced by Karlin and McGregor and its interpretation in the context of shell polynomials and the corresponding orthogonal polynomials. This interpretation leads to increased in…
