Let k be a definable L-cardinal. Then there is a set of reals X, class-generic over L, such that L(X) and L have the same cardinals, X has size k in L(X) and some pi-1-2 formula defines X in all set-generic extensions of L(X). Two corollaries, both assuming the consistency of an inaccessible: It is consistent for the Perfect Set Property to hold for boldface sigma-1-2 sets, yet fail for some lightface pi-1-2 set. It is consistent that the Perfect Set Property holds for boldface sigma-1-2 sets yet some lightface pi-1-2 wellordering of some set of reals has length aleph-1000.
We isolate a new large cardinal concept, "remarkability." Consistencywise, remarkable cardinals are between ineffable and omega-Erdos cardinals. They are characterized by the existence of "0^sharp-like" embeddings; however, they relativize down to L. It turns out that the existence of a remarkable cardinal is equiconsistent with L(R) absoluteness under proper forcings. In particular, said absoluteness does not imply Pi^1_1 determinacy.
W.H. Woodin showed that if $κ_1 < \cdots < κ_n$ are strong cardinals then two-step ${\bfΣ}^1_{n+3}$ generic absoluteness holds after collapsing $2^{2^{κ_n}}$ to be countable. We show that this number can be reduced to $2^{κ_n}$, and to $κ_n^+$ in the case $n = 1$, but cannot be further reduced to $κ_n$.
We introduce a category whose objects are stationary set preserving complete boolean algebras and whose arrows are complete homomorphisms with a stationary set preserving quotient. We show that the cut of this category at a rank initial segment of the universe of height a super compact which is a limit of super compact cardinals is a stationary set preserving partial order which forces $MM^{++}$ and collapses its size to become the second uncountable cardinal. Next we argue that any of the known methods to produce a model of $MM^{++}$ collapsing a superhuge cardinal to become the second uncoun…
The resurrection axioms are forcing axioms introduced recently by Hamkins and Johnstone, developing on ideas of Chalons and Velicković. We introduce a stronger form of resurrection axioms (the \emph{iterated} resurrection axioms $\textrm{RA}_α(Γ)$ for a class of forcings $Γ$ and a given ordinal $α$), and show that $\textrm{RA}_ω(Γ)$ implies generic absoluteness for the first-order theory of $H_{γ^+}$ with respect to forcings in $Γ$ preserving the axiom, where $γ=γ_Γ$ is a cardinal which depends on $Γ$ ($γ_Γ=ω_1$ if $Γ$ is any among the classes of countably closed, proper, semiproper, stationar…
We introduce bounded category forcing axioms for well-behaved classes $Γ$. These are strong forms of bounded forcing axioms which completely decide the theory of some initial segment of the universe $H_{λ_Γ^+}$ modulo forcing in $Γ$, for some cardinal $λ_Γ$ naturally associated to $Γ$. These axioms naturally extend projective absoluteness for arbitrary set-forcing--in this situation $λ_Γ=ω$--to classes $Γ$ with $λ_Γ>ω$. Unlike projective absoluteness, these higher bounded category forcing axioms do not follow from large cardinal axioms, but can be forced under mild large cardinal assumptions o…
In this article we present a technique for selecting models of set theory that are complete in a model-theoretic sense. Specifically, we will apply Robinson infinite forcing to the collections of models of ZFC obtained by Cohen forcing. This technique will be used to suggest a unified perspective on generic absoluteness principles.
We study the relationship between Amoeba forcing (the partial order which generically adds a measure one set of random reals) and projective measurability. Given a universe V of set theory and a forcing notion P in V we say that V is Sigma^1_n - P - absolute iff for every Sigma^1_n-sentence phi with parameters in V we have V models phi iff V^P models phi. We show that Sigma^1_4-Amoeba-absoluteness implies that forall a in omega^omega (omega_1^{L[a]} < omega_1^V), and hence Sigma^1_3-measurability. This answers a question of Haim Judah (private communication).
We show that for $Π_2$-properties of second or third order arithmetic as formalized in appropriate natural signatures the apparently weaker notion of forcibility overlaps with the standard notion of consistency (assuming large cardinal axioms). Among such $Π_2$-properties we mention: the negation of the Continuum hypothesis, Souslin Hypothesis, the negation of Whitehead's conjecture on free groups, the non-existence of outer automorphisms for the Calkin algebra, etc... In particular this gives an a posteriori explanation of the success forcing (and forcing axioms) met in producing models of su…
Assuming that there is no inner model with a strong cardinal, the following is shown: any subset of ω_1 can be made Δ^1_3 (in the codes) by a reasonable set-forcing; there is a reasonable set-generic extension with a Δ^1_3 well-ordering of its reals; 2-step Σ^1_4 absoluteness fails w.r.t. set-sized reasonable forcings.
$Σ^1_3$-absoluteness for ccc forcing means that for any ccc forcing $P$, ${H_{ω_1}}^V \prec_{Σ_2}{H_{ω_1}}^{V^P}$. "$ω_1$ inaccessible to reals" means that for any real $r$, ${ω_1}^{L[r]}<ω_1$. To measure the exact consistency strength of "$Σ^1_3$-absoluteness for ccc forcing and $ω_1$ is inaccessible to reals", we introduce a weak version of a weakly compact cardinal, namely, a (lightface) $Σ^1_2$-indescribable cardinal; $κ$ has this property exactly if it is inaccessible and $H_κ\prec_{Σ_2} H_{κ^+}$.
We discuss the effect of adding a single real (for various forcing notions adding reals) on cardinal invariants associated with the continuum (like the unbounding or the dominating number or the cardinals related to measure and category on the real line). For random and Cohen forcing, this question was investigated by Cicho'n and Pawlikowski; for Hechler forcing, by Judah, Shelah and myself. We show here: (1) adding an eventually different or a localization real adjoins a Luzin set of size continuum and a mad family of size omega_1; (2) Laver and Mathias forcing collapse the dominating number …
We give a brief survey on the interplay between forcing axioms and various other non-constructive principles widely used in many fields of abstract mathematics, such as the axiom of choice and Baire's category theorem. First of all we outline how, using basic partial order theory, it is possible to reformulate the axiom of choice, Baire's category theorem, and many large cardinal axioms as specific instances of forcing axioms. We then address forcing axioms with a model-theoretic perspective and outline a deep analogy existing between the standard Łoś Theorem for ultraproducts of first order s…
An infinite binary sequence A is absolutely undecidable if it is impossible to compute A on a set of positions of positive upper density. Absolute undecidability is a weakening of bi-immunity. Downey, Jockusch and Schupp asked whether, unlike the case for bi-immunity, there is an absolutely undecidable set in every non-zero Turing degree. We provide a positive answer to this question by applying techniques from coding theory. We show how to use Walsh-Hadamard codes to build a truth-table functional which maps any sequence A to a sequence B, such that given any restriction of B to a set of posi…
Remarkable cardinals were introduced by Schindler, who showed that the existence of a remarkable cardinal is equiconsistent with the assertion that the theory of $L(\mathbb R)$ is absolute for proper forcing. Here, we study the indestructibility properties of remarkable cardinals. We show that if $κ$ is remarkable, then there is a forcing extension in which the remarkability of $κ$ becomes indestructible by all $\ltκ$-closed $\leqκ$-distributive forcing and all two-step iterations of the form ${\rm Add}(κ,θ)*\dot{\mathbb R}$, where $\dot{\mathbb R}$ is forced to be $\ltκ$-closed and $\leqκ$-di…
We introduce the idea of a coherent adequate set of models, which can be used as side conditions in forcing. As an application we define a forcing poset which adds a square sequence on $ω_2$ using finite conditions.
We present three natural combinatorial properties for class forcing notions, which imply the forcing theorem to hold. We then show that all known sufficent conditions for the forcing theorem (except for the forcing theorem itself), including the three properties presented in this paper, imply yet another regularity property for class forcing notions, namely that proper classes of the ground model cannot become sets in a generic extension, that is they do not have set-sized names in the ground model. We then show that over certain models of Gödel-Bernays set theory without the power set axiom, …
Various theorems for the preservation of set-theoretic axioms under forcing are proved, regarding both forcing axioms and axioms true in the Levy-Collapse. These show in particular that certain applications of forcing axioms require to add generic countable sequences high up in the set-theoretic hierarchy even before collapsing everything down to $\aleph\_1$. Later we give applications, among them the consistency of ${\rm MM}$ with $\aleph\_ω$ not being Jonsson which answers a question raised during Oberwolfach 2005.
The forcing theorem is the most fundamental result about set forcing, stating that the forcing relation for any set forcing is definable and that the truth lemma holds, that is everything that holds in a generic extension is forced by a condition in the relevant generic filter. We show that both the definability (and, in fact, even the amenability) of the forcing relation and the truth lemma can fail for class forcing. In addition to these negative results, we show that the forcing theorem is equivalent to the existence of a (certain kind of) Boolean completion, and we introduce a weak combina…
These notes are extracted from the lectures on forcing axioms and applications held by professor Matteo Viale at the University of Turin in the academic year 2011-2012. Our purpose is to give a brief account on forcing axioms with a special focus on some consequences of them (SRP, OCA, PID). These principles were first isolated by Todor\v cević and interpolate most consequences of MM and PFA, thus providing a useful insight on the combinatorial structure of the theory of forcing axioms. In the first part of this notes we will give a brief account on forcing axioms, introducing some equivalent …
Let I be a sigma-ideal sigma-generated by a projective collection of closed sets. The forcing with I-positive Borel sets is proper and adds a single real r of an almost minimal degree: if s is a real in V[r] then s is Cohen generic over V or V[s]=V[r].

I survey an array of topics in set theory in the context of a novel class of forcing notions: subcomplete forcing. Subcompleteness was originally defined by Ronald Jensen. I have attempted to make the subject somewhat more approachable to set theorists, while showing various properties of subcomplete forcing which one might desire of a forcing class, drawing comparisons between subcomplete forcing and countably closed forcing. In particular, I look at the interaction between subcomplete forcing and $ω_1$-trees, preservation properties of subcomplete forcing, the subcomplete maximality principl…
It is known that the set of possible cofinalities $\mathrm{pcf}(A)$ has good properties if $A$ is a progressive interval of regular cardinals. In this paper, we give an interval of regular cardinals $A$ such that $\mathrm{pcf}(A)$ has no good properties in the presense of a measurable cardinal, or in generic extensions by Prikry-type forcing.
In light of the celebrated theorem of Vopěnka (1972), proving in ZFC that every set is generic over HOD, it is natural to inquire whether the set-theoretic universe $V$ must be a class-forcing extension of HOD by some possibly proper-class forcing notion in HOD. We show, negatively, that if ZFC is consistent, then there is a model of ZFC that is not a class-forcing extension of its HOD for any class forcing notion definable in HOD and with definable forcing relations there (allowing parameters). Meanwhile, S. Friedman (2012) showed, positively, that if one augments HOD with a certain ZFC-amena…
These are lecture notes from a course I gave at the University of Wisconsin during the Spring semester of 1993. Part 1 is concerned with Borel hierarchies. Section 13 contains an unpublished theorem of Fremlin concerning Borel hierarchies and MA. Section 14 and 15 contain new results concerning the lengths of Borel hierarchies in the Cohen and random real model. Part 2 contains standard results on the theory of Analytic sets. Section 25 contains Harrington's Theorem that it is consistent to have $Π^1_2$ sets of arbitrary cardinality. Part 3 has the usual separation theorems. Part 4 gives some …
We give characterizations for the (in ZFC unprovable) sentences ``Every $\Sb{1}{2}$--set is measurable" and ``Every $\Db{1}{2}$--set is measurable" for various notions of measurability derived from well--known forcing partial orderings.
We present a notion of forcing that can be used, in conjunction with other results, to show that there is a Martin-Löf random set X such that X does not compute 0' and X computes every K-trivial set.
The class forcing theorem, which asserts that every class forcing notion $\mathbb{P}$ admits a forcing relation $\Vdash_{\mathbb{P}}$, that is, a relation satisfying the forcing relation recursion -- it follows that statements true in the corresponding forcing extensions are forced and forced statements are true -- is equivalent over Gödel-Bernays set theory GBC to the principle of elementary transfinite recursion $\text{ETR}_{\text{Ord}}$ for class recursions of length $\text{Ord}$. It is also equivalent to the existence of truth predicates for the infinitary languages $\mathcal{L}_{\text{Ord…
A central theme in set theory is to find universes with extreme, well-understood behaviour. The case we are interested in is assuming GCH and has a strong forcing axiom of higher order than usual. Instead of "for every suitable forcing notion for~$λ$" we shall say "for every such family of forcing notions, depending on stationary $S\subseteq λ$, for some such stationary set we have\dots". Such notions of forcing are important for Abelian group theory, but this application is delayed for a sequel.
What are the most general principles in set theory relating forceability and truth? As with Solovay's celebrated analysis of provability, both this question and its answer are naturally formulated with modal logic. We aim to do for forceability what Solovay did for provability. A set theoretical assertion psi is forceable or possible, if psi holds in some forcing extension, and necessary, if psi holds in all forcing extensions. In this forcing interpretation of modal logic, we establish that if ZFC is consistent, then the ZFC-provable principles of forcing are exactly those in the modal theory…
Let V be the universe of sets and V_α the sets of rank \leqα. We develop some axiom schemata for set theory based on the following three assumptions: 1. V \models ZFC 2. V is large with respect to the class of ordinals 3. V is large with respect to each of the V_α
The aim of this short note is to communicate a simple solution to the problem posed in [1] as Question 7.2.7: is it true that for every ccc $σ$-ideal I any I-positive Borel set contains modulo I an I-positive closed set?
Typically, set theorists reason about forcing constructions in the context of ZFC. We show that without AC, several simple properties of forcing posets fail to hold, one of which answers Miller's question from arXiv:0704.3998.
Let $\mathcal R$ be a $Σ^1_1$ binary relation, and recall that a set $A$ is $\mathcal R$-discrete if no two elements of $A$ are related by $\mathcal R$. We show that in the Sacks and Miller forcing extensions of $L$ there is a $Δ^1_2$ maximal $\mathcal{R}$-discrete set. We use this to answer in the negative the main question posed in \cite{Fischer2010} by showing that in the Sacks and Miller extensions there is a $Π^1_1$ maximal orthogonal family ("mof") of Borel probability measures on Cantor space. By contrast, we show that if there is a Mathias real over $L$ then there are no $Σ^1_2$ mofs.
We continue the work done by the authors and before that by the second author, Kanovei and koepke. We prove that for every set of ordinals $A$ in a Magidor-Radin generic extension using a coherent sequence such that $o^{\vec{U}}(κ)<κ^+$, there is $C'\subseteq C_G$, such that $V[A]=V[C']$. Also we prove that the supremum of a fresh set in a Prikry, tree Prikry, Magidor, Radin-Magidor and Radin forcing, changes cofinality to $ω$.
It was realized early on that topologies can model constructive systems, as the open sets form a Heyting algebra. After the development of forcing, in the form of Boolean-valued models, it became clear that, just as over ZF any Boolean-valued model also satisfies ZF, so do Heyting-valued models satisfy IZF, which stands for Intuitionistic ZF, the most direct constructive re-working of the ZF axioms. In this paper, we return to topologies, and introduce a variant model, along with a correspondingly revised forcing or satisfaction relation. The purpose is to prove independence results related to…
Let $D$ be an infinite discrete set of measurable cardinals. It is shown that generalized Prikry forcing to add a countable sequence to each cardinal in $D$ is subcomplete. To do this it is shown that a simplified version of generalized Prikry forcing which adds a point below each cardinal in $D$, called generalized diagonal Prikry forcing, is subcomplete. Moreover, the generalized diagonal Prikry forcing associated to $D$ is subcomplete above $μ$, where $μ$ is any regular cardinal below the first limit point of $D$.
We present reasons for developing a theory of forcing notions which satisfy the properness demand for countable models which are not necessarily elementary submodels of some (H(chi), in). This leads to forcing notions which are ``reasonably'' definable. We present two specific properties materializing this intuition: nep (non-elementary properness) and snep (Souslin non-elementary properness). For this we consider candidates (countable models to which the definition applies), and the older Souslin proper. A major theme here is ``preservation by iteration'', but we also show a dichotomy: if suc…
A set is nontypical in the Russell sense, if it belongs to a countable ordinal definable set. The class HNT of all hereditarily nontypical sets satisfies all axioms of ZF and the double inclusion HOD $\subseteq$ HNT $\subseteq$ V holds. Solving a problem recently proposed by Tzouvaras, a generic extension L$[a,x]$ of L, by two reals $a,x$, is presented in which L=HOD $\subsetneqq$ L$[a]$=HNT $\subsetneqq$ V=L$[a,x]$, so that HNT is a model of ZFC strictly between HOD and the universe.
The purpose of this paper is to present some results which suggest that the Singular Cardinals Hypothesis follows from the Proper Forcing Axiom. What will be proved is that a form of simultaneous reflection follows from the Set Mapping Reflection Principle, a consequence of PFA. While the results fall short of showing that MRP implies SCH, it will be shown that MRP implies that if SCH fails first at kappa then every stationary subset of S_{kappa^+}^omega = {a < kappa^+ : cf(a) = omega} reflects. It will also be demonstrated that MRP always fails in a generic extension by Prikry forcing.
We introduce the forcing model of IZFA (Intuitionistic Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory with Atoms) for every Grothendieck topology and prove that the topos of sheaves on every site is equivalent to the category of 'sets in this forcing model'.
James Earl Baumgartner (March 23, 1943 - December 28, 2011) came of age mathematically during the emergence of forcing as a fundamental technique of set theory, and his seminal research changed the way set theory is done. He made fundamental contributions to the development of forcing, to our understanding of uncountable orders, to the partition calculus, and to large cardinals and their ideals. He promulgated the use of logic such as absoluteness and elementary submodels to solve problems in set theory, he applied his knowledge of set theory to a variety of areas in collaboration with other m…
In various models of set theory, we consider covering Aleph_1 x Aleph_1 rectangles by countably many smooth curves, and we study differentiable isomorphisms between Aleph_1-dense sets of reals.
The hidden-variables premise is shown to be equivalent to the existence of generic filters for algebras of commuting propositions and for certain more general propositional systems. The significance of this equivalence is interpreted in light of the theory of generic filters and boolean-valued models in set theory (the method of forcing). The apparent stochastic nature of quantum observation is derived for these hidden-variables models.
This is an introduction to the set-theoretic method of forcing, including its application in proving the independence of the Continuum Hypothesis from the Zermelo-Fraenkel axioms of set theory. I presuppose no particular mathematical background beyond some familiarity with set theory and mathematical logic - in particular, no algebra is presupposed, though it can be useful. The goal is to have a document that makes this material accessible to mathematics graduate students in all fields, and to philosophers with an interest in set theory and mathematical logic but no other mathematical backgrou…
A set $A$ of integers is called total if there is an algorithm which, given an enumeration of $A$, enumerates the complement of $A$, and called cototal if there is an algorithm which, given an enumeration of the complement of $A$, enumerates $A$. Many variants of totality and cototality have been studied in computability theory. In this note, by an effective forcing construction with strongly infinite dimensional Cantor manifolds, which can be viewed as an effectivization of Zapletal's "half-Cohen" forcing (i.e., the forcing with Henderson compacta), we construct a set of integers whose enumer…
The feeling that those two forcing notions-Cohen and Random-(equivalently the corresponding Boolean algebras Borel(R)/(meager sets), Borel(R)/(null sets)) are special, was probably old and widespread. A reasonable interpretation is to show them unique, or ``minimal'' or at least characteristic in a family of ``nice forcing'' like Borel. We shall interpret ``nice'' as Souslin as suggested by Judah Shelah [JdSh 292]. We divide the family of Souslin forcing to two, and expect that: among the first part, i.e. those adding some non-dominated real, Cohen is minimal (=is below every one), while among…
