We study the removable singularities for solutions to the Beltrami equation $\bar\partial f=μ\partial f$, assuming that the coefficient $μ$ lies on some Sobolev space $W^{1,p}$, $p\leq 2$. Our results are based on an extended version of the well known Weyl's lemma, asserting that distributional solutions are actually true solutions. Our main result is that quasiconformal mappings with compactly supported Beltrami coefficient $μ\in W^{1,2}$ preserve compact sets of $σ$-finite length and vanishing analytic capacity, even though they need not be bilipschitz.
In this paper, we look at quasiconformal solutions $ϕ:\mathbb{C}\to\mathbb{C}$ of Beltrami equations $$ \partial_{\overline{z}} ϕ(z)=μ(z)\,\partial_z ϕ(z). $$ where $μ\in L^\infty(\mathbb{C})$ is compactly supported on $\mathbb{D}$, $\|μ\|_\infty<1$ and belongs to the fractional Sobolev space $W^{α, \frac2α}(\mathbb{C})$. Our main result states that $$\log\partial_zϕ\in W^{α, \frac2α}(\mathbb{C})$$ whenever $α>\frac12$. Our method relies on an $n$-dimensional result, which asserts the compactness of the commutator $$[b,(-Δ)^\fracβ{2}]:L^\frac{np}{n-βp}(\mathbb{R}^n)\to L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$$ betw…
New results regarding the Sobolev regularity of the principal solution of the linear Beltrami equation $\bar{\partial} f = μ\partial f + ν\overline{\partial f}$ for discontinuous Beltrami coefficients $μ$ and $ν$ are obtained, using Kato-Ponce commutators, obtaining that $\overline \partial f$ belongs to a Sobolev space with the same smoothness as the coefficients but some loss in the integrability parameter. A conjecture on the cases where the limitations of the method do not work is raised.
Our goal in this work is to present some function spaces on the complex plane $\C$, $X(\C)$, for which the quasiregular solutions of the Beltrami equation, $\bar\partial f (z) = μ(z) \partial f (z)$, have first derivatives locally in $X(\C)$, provided that the Beltrami coefficient $μ$ belongs to $X(\C)$.
We study the distributional solutions to the (generalized) Beltrami equation under Sobolev assumptions on the Beltrami coefficients. In this setting, we prove that these distributional solutions are true quasiregular maps and they are smoother than expected, that is, they have second order derivatives in $L^{1+\varepsilon}_{loc}$, for some $\varepsilon >0$.
Consider a Lipschitz domain $Ω$ and a measurable function $μ$ supported in $\overlineΩ$ with $\left\|μ\right\|_{L^\infty}<1$. Then the derivatives of a quasiconformal solution of the Beltrami equation $\overline{\partial} f =μ\partial f$ inherit the Sobolev regularity $W^{n,p}(Ω)$ of the Beltrami coefficient $μ$ as long as $Ω$ is regular enough. The condition obtained is that the outward unit normal vector $N$ of the boundary of the domain is in the trace space, that is, $N\in B^{n-1/p}_{p,p}(\partialΩ)$.
In this paper we continue the study on the resolvent estimates of the Laplace-Beltrami operator $Δ_g$ on a compact manifolds $M$ with dimension $n\geq3$. On the Sobolev line $1/p-1/q=2/n$ we can prove that the resolvent $(Δ_g+ζ)^{-1}$ is uniformly bounded from $L^p$ to $L^q$ when $(p,q)$ are within the admissible range $p\leq2(n+1)/(n+3)$ and $q\geq2(n+1)/(n-1)$ and $ζ$ is outside a parabola opening to the right and a small disk centered at the origin. This naturally generalizes the previous results in \cite{Kenig} and \cite{bssy} which addressed only the special case when $p=2n/(n+2), q=2n/(n…
We obtain a priori estimates in $L^p(ω)$ for the generalized Beltrami equation, provided that the coefficients are compactly supported $VMO$ functions with the expected ellipticity condition, and the weight $ω$ lies in the Muckenhoupt class $A_p$. As an application, we obtain improved regularity for the jacobian of certain quasiconformal mappings.
We obtain improved regularity of homeomorphic solutions of the reduced Beltrami equation, as compared to the standard Beltrami equation. Such an improvement is not possible in terms of Holder or Sobolev regularity; instead, our results concern the generalized variation of restrictions to lines. Specifically, we prove that the restriction to any line segment has finite p-variation for all p>1 but not necessarily for p=1.
We estimate the Hoelder exponent $α$ of solutions to the Beltrami equation $\dbar f=μ\de f$, where the Beltrami coefficient satisfies $\|μ\|_\infty<1$. Our estimate improves the classical estimate $α\ge\|K_μ\|^{-1}$, where $K_μ=(1+|μ|)/(1-|μ|)$, and it is sharp, in the sense that it is actually attained in a class of mappings which generalize the radial stretchings. Some other properties of such mappings are also provided.
We study Hardy spaces of solutions to the conjugate Beltrami equation with Lipschitz coefficient on Dini-smooth simply connected planar domains, in the range of exponents $1<\infty$. We analyse their boundary behaviour and certain density properties of their traces. We derive on the way an analog of the Fatou theorem for the Dirichlet and Neumann problems associated with the equation ${div}(σ\nabla u)=0$ with $L^p$-boundary data.
We provide estimates for the Hölder exponent of solutions to the Beltrami equation $\dbar f=μ\de f+ν\bar{\de f}$, where the Beltrami coefficients $μ,ν$ satisfy $\||μ|+|ν|\|_\infty<1$ and $\Im(ν)=0$. Our estimates depend on the arguments of the Beltrami coefficients as well as on their moduli. Furthermore, we exhibit a class of mappings of the ``angular stretching" type, on which our estimates are actually attained, and we discuss the main properties of such mappings.
In this article, first we give a general lemma on the existence of regular homeomorphic solutions $f$ with the hydrodynamic normalization $f(z)=z+o(1)$ as $z\to\infty$ to the degenerate Beltrami equations $\overline{\partial}f=μ\,\partial f$ in $\mathbb C$ whose complex coefficients $μ$ have compact supports. On this basis, we establish criteria for existence and representation of regular discrete open solutions for the Dirichlet problem with continuous data to degenerate Beltrami equations in arbitrary simply connected bounded domains $D$ in $\mathbb C$. Moreover, we obtain similar criteria f…
We give here results on the existence of nonclassical solutions of the Hilbert boundary value problem in terms of the so-called angular limits (along nontangent curves to the boundary) for Beltrami equations with sources in Jordan domains satisfying the quasihyperbolic boundary condition by Gehring-Martio, generally speaking, without $(A)-$condition by Ladyzhenskaya-Ural'tseva and, in particular, without the known outer cone condition that were standard for boundary value problems in the PDE theory. Assuming that the coefficients of the problem are functions of countable bounded variation and …
We establish several Poincaré--Sobolev type inequalities for the Lapalce--Beltrami operator $Δ_g$ in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb H^n$ with $n\geq 5$. These inequalities could be seen as the improved second order Poincaré inequality with remainder terms involving with the sharp Rellich inequality or sharp Sobolev inequality in $\mathbb H^n$. The novelty of these inequalities is that it combines both the sharp Poincaré inequality and the sharp Rellich inequality or the sharp Sobolev inequality for $Δ_g$ in $\mathbb H^n$. As a consequence, we obtain the Poincaré--Sobolev inequality for the seco…
We investigate the regularity of semi-stable, radially symmetric, and decreasing solutions for a class of quasilinear reaction-diffusion equations in the inhomogeneous context of Riemannian manifolds. We prove uniform boundedness, Lebesgue and Sobolev estimates for this class of solutions for equations involving the p-Laplace Beltrami operator and locally Lipschitz non-linearity. We emphasize that our results do not depend on the boundary conditions and the specific form of the non-linearities and metric. Moreover, as an application, we establish regularity of the extremal solutions for equati…
In this paper we give an affirmative answer to an open question mentioned in [Le Bris and Lions, Comm. Partial Differential Equations 33 (2008), 1272--1317], that is, we prove the well-posedness of the Fokker-Planck type equations with Sobolev diffusion coefficients and BV drift coefficients.
Consider a Lipschitz domain $Ω$ and the Beurling transform of its characteristic function $\mathcal{B} χ_Ω(z)= - {\rm p.v.}\frac1{πz^2}*χ_Ω(z) $. It is shown that if the outward unit normal vector $N$ of the boundary of the domain is in the trace space of $W^{n,p}(Ω)$ (i.e., the Besov space $B^{n-1/p}_{p,p}(\partialΩ)$) then $\mathcal{B} χ_Ω\in W^{n,p}(Ω)$. Moreover, when $p>2$ the boundedness of the Beurling transform on $W^{n,p}(Ω)$ follows. This fact has far-reaching consequences in the study of the regularity of quasiconformal solutions of the Beltrami equation.
We establish Weiss' and Monneau's type quasi-monotonicity formulas for quadratic energies having matrix of coefficients in a Sobolev space $W^{1,p}$, $p>n$, and provide an application to the corresponding free boundary analysis for the related classical obstacle problems.
We prove quasi-monotonicity formulae for classical obstacle-type problems with quadratic energies with coefficients in fractional Sobolev spaces, and a linear term with a Dini-type continuity property. These formulae are used to obtain the regularity of free-boundary points following the approaches by Caffarelli, Monneau and Weiss.
In this paper we present a weighted $L_p$-theory of parabolic systems on a half space. The leading coefficients are assumed to be only measurable in $t$ and have small bounded mean oscillations (BMO) with respect to $x$, and the lower order coefficients are allowed to blow up near the boundary.
Second order parabolic equations in Sobolev spaces with mixed norms are studied. The leading coefficients (except $a^{11}$) are measurable in both time and one spatial variable, and VMO in the other spatial variables. The coefficient $a^{11}$ is measurable in time and VMO in the spatial variables. The unique solvability of equations in the whole space is applied to solving Dirichlet and oblique derivative problems for parabolic equations defined in a half-space.
We prove the Lp,q-solvability of parabolic equations in divergence form with full lower-order terms. The coefficients and non-homogeneous terms belong to mixed Lebesgue spaces with the lowest integrability conditions. In particular, the coefficients for the lower-order terms are not necessarily bounded. We study both the Dirichlet and conormal derivative boundary value problems on irregular domains. We also prove embedding results for parabolic Sobolev spaces, the proof of which is of independent interest.
We prove the unique solvability in weighted Sobolev spaces of non-divergence form elliptic and parabolic equations on a half space with the homogeneous Neumann boundary condition. All the leading coefficients are assumed to be only measurable in the time variable and have small mean oscillations in the spatial variables. Our results can be applied to Neumann boundary value problems for {\em stochastic} partial differential equations with BMO$_x$ coefficients.
We consider both divergence and non-divergence parabolic equations on a half space in weighted Sobolev spaces. All the leading coefficients are assumed to be only measurable in the time and one spatial variable except one coefficient, which is assumed to be only measurable either in the time or the spatial variable. As functions of the other variables the coefficients have small bounded mean oscillation (BMO) semi-norms. The lower-order coefficients are allowed to blow up near the boundary with a certain optimal growth condition. As a corollary, we also obtain the corresponding results for ell…
We consider time fractional parabolic equations in both divergence and non-divergence form when the leading coefficients $a^{ij}$ are measurable functions of $(t,x_1)$ except for $a^{11}$ which is a measurable function of either $t$ or $x_1$. We obtain the solvability in Sobolev spaces of the equations in the whole space, on a half space, or on a partially bounded domain. The proofs use a level set argument, a scaling argument, and embeddings in fractional parabolic Sobolev spaces for which we give a direct and elementary proof.
In recent studies on the G-convergence of Beltrami operators, a number of issues arouse concerning injectivity properties of families of quasiconformal mappings. Bojarski, D'Onofrio, Iwaniec and Sbordone formulated a conjecture based on the existence of a so-called primary pair. Very recently, Bojarski proved the existence of one such pair. We provide a general, constructive, procedure for obtaining a new rich class of such primary pairs. This proof is obtained as a slight adaptation of previous work by the authors concerning the nonvanishing of the Jacobian of pairs of solutions of elliptic e…
We consider elliptic equations with operators $L=a^{ij}D_{ij}+b^{i}D_{i}-c$ with $a$ being almost in VMO, $b$ in a Morrey class containing $ L_{d}$, and $c\geq0$ in a Morrey class containing $L_{d/2}$. We prove the solvability in Sobolev spaces of $Lu=f\in L_{p}$ in bounded $C^{1,1}$-domains, and of $λu-Lu=f$ in the whole space for any $λ>0$. Weak uniqueness of the martingale problem associated with such operators is also discussed.
In this paper, the following problem in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{B}^N$ will be considered \begin{equation*} -Δ_{\mathbb{B}^N} u=f(x,u), \mathrm{in} \ \mathbb{B}^N.\eqno{(1)} \end{equation*} where, $Δ_{\mathbb{B}^N}$ denotes the Laplace Beltrami operator on $\mathbb{B}^N$. And this problem can be converted into the following Euclidean problem \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -\operatorname{div}(K(x) \nabla u)=4 K(x)^{\frac{N}{N-2}}f(x,u), &\mathrm{in} \ \mathbb{B}^N, \\ u(0)=0, &\mathrm{on}\ \partial\mathbb{B}^N, \end{cases}\eqno{(2)} \end{equation*} where, $K(x):=1/\left(1-|x|^2\right)^{N-…
We establish existence, uniqueness, and arbitrary order Sobolev regularity results for the second order parabolic equations with measurable coefficients defined on the conic domains $D$ of the type $$ D(M):=\left\{x\in R^d :\,\frac{x}{|x|}\in M\right\}, \quad \quad M \subset S^{d-1}. $$ We obtain the regularity results by using a system of mixed weights consisting of appropriate powers of the distance to the vertex and of the distance to the boundary. We also provide the sharp ranges of admissible powers of the distance to the vertex and to the boundary.
In this paper we study weighted Hardy-Sobolev spaces of vector valued functions analytic on double-napped cones of the complex plane. We introduce these spaces as a tool for complex scaling of linear ordinary differential equations with dilation analytic unbounded operator coefficients. As examples we consider boundary value problems in cylindrical domains and domains with quasicylindrical ends.
In this paper we study the hydrodynamic (small mass approximation) limit of a Fokker-Planck equation. This equation arises in the kinetic description of the evolution of a particle system immersed in a viscous Stokes flow. We discuss two different methods of hydrodynamic convergence. The first method works with initial data in a weighted L2 space and uses weak convergence and the extraction of convergent subsequences. The second uses entropic initial data and gives an L1 convergence to the solution of the limit problem via the study of the relative entropy.
We show that the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on the boundary of a bounded open set in $\mathbb R^n$, $n\ge 3$, for the perturbed polyharmonic operator $(-Δ)^m+A\cdot D+q$, $m\ge 2$, with $n>m$, $A\in W^{-\frac{m-2}{2},\frac{2n}{m}}$ and $q\in W^{-\frac{m}{2}+δ,\frac{2n}{m}}$, with $0<δ<1/2$, determines the potentials $A$ and $q$ in the set uniquely. The proof is based on a Carleman estimate with linear weights and with a gain of two derivatives and on the property of products of functions in Sobolev spaces.
This work is concerned with both higher integrability and differentiability for linear nonlocal equations with possibly very irregular coefficients of VMO-type or even coefficients that are merely small in BMO. In particular, such coefficients might be discontinuous. While for corresponding local elliptic equations with VMO coefficients such a gain of Sobolev regularity along the differentiability scale is unattainable, it was already observed in previous works that gaining differentiability in our nonlocal setting is possible under less restrictive assumptions than in the local setting. In th…
In this paper we study the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for first order hyperbolic systems with constant multiplicities and with low regularity coefficients depending just on the time variable. We consider Zygmund and log-Zygmund type assumptions, and we prove well-posedness in $H^\infty$ respectively without loss and with finite loss of derivatives. The key to obtain the results is the construction of a suitable symmetrizer for our system, which allows us to recover energy estimates (with or without loss) for the hyperbolic operator under consideration. This can be achievied, in contr…
We prove the solvability in Sobolev spaces of the conormal derivative problem for the stationary Stokes system with irregular coefficients on bounded Reifenberg flat domains. The coefficients are assumed to be merely measurable in one direction, which may differ depending on the local coordinate systems, and have small mean oscillations in the other directions. In the course of the proof, we use a local version of the Poincaré inequality on Reifenberg flat domains, the proof of which is of independent interest.
We obtain well-posedness results in $L_p$-based weighted Sobolev spaces for a transmission problem for anisotropic Stokes and Navier-Stokes systems with $L_{\infty}$ strongly elliptic coefficient tensor, in complementary Lipschitz domains of ${\mathbb R}^n$, $n\ge 3$. The strong ellipticity allows to explore the associated pseudostress setting. First, we use a variational approach that reduces two linear transmission problems for the anisotropic Stokes system to equivalent mixed variational formulations with data in $L_p$-based weighted Sobolev and Besov spaces. We show that such a mixed varia…
This paper studies the Sobolev regularity of weak solution of degenerate elliptic equations in divergence form $\text{div}[\mathbf{A}(X) \nabla u] = \text{div}[\mathbf{F}(X)]$, where $X = (x,y) \in \mathbb{R}^{n} \times \mathbb{R}$ . The coefficient matrix $\mathbf{A}(X)$ is a symmetric, measurable $(n+1) \times (n+1)$ matrix, and it could be degenerate or singular in the one dimensional $y$-variable as a weight function in the Muckenhoupt class $A_2$ of weights. Our results give weighted Sobolev regularity estimates of Calderón-Zygmund type for weak solutions of this class of singular, degene…
This paper examines systems of poly-harmonic equations of the Hardy--Sobolev type and the closely related weighted systems of integral equations involving Riesz potentials. Namely, it is shown that the two systems are equivalent under some appropriate conditions. Then a sharp criterion for the existence and non-existence of positive solutions is determined for both differential and integral versions of a Hardy--Sobolev type system with variable coefficients. In the constant coefficient case, Liouville type theorems for positive radial solutions are also established using radial decay estimates…
We consider uniformly elliptic and parabolic second-order equations with bounded zeroth-order and bounded VMO leading coefficients and possibly growing first-order coefficients. We look for solutions which are summable to the $p$-th power with respect to the usual Lebesgue measure along with their first and second-order derivatives with respect to the spatial variable.
We study the existence, uniqueness as well as regularity issues for the two-dimensional incompressible Boussinesq equations with temperature-dependent thermal and viscosity diffusion coefficients in general Sobolev spaces. The optimal regularity exponent ranges are considered.
Let $Ω\subset R^n$ be a bounded convex domain with $n\ge2$. Suppose that $A$ is uniformly elliptic and belongs to $W^{1,n}$ when $n\ge 3$ or $W^{1,q}$ for some $q>2$ when $n=2$. For $1<p<\infty$, we build up a global second order regularity estimate $$\|D[|Du|^{p-2} Du]\|_{L^2(Ω)}+\|D[ |\sqrt{A}Du|^{p-2} A Du]\|_{L^2(Ω)} \le C \|f\|_{L^2(Ω)} $$ for inhomogeneous $p$-Laplace type equation \begin{equation} -\mathrm{div}\big(\langle A Du,Du\rangle ^{\frac{p-2}2} A Du\big)=f \quad\rm{in }\ Ω\mbox{ with Dirichlet/Neumann $0$-boundary.} \end{equation} Similar result was also built up for certain bou…
