A Central Limit Theorem for non-commutative random variables is proved using the Lindeberg method. The theorem is a generalization of the Central Limit Theorem for free random variables proved by Voiculescu. The Central Limit Theorem in this paper relies on an assumption which is weaker than freeness.
The central limit theorem of martingales is the fundamental tool for studying the convergence of stochastic processes, especially stochastic integrals and differential equations. In this paper, general central limit theorems and functional central limit theorems are obtained for martingale like random variables under the sub-linear expectation. As applications, the Lindeberg central limit theorem and functional central limit theorem are obtained for independent but not necessarily identically distributed random variables, and a new proof of the Lévy characterization of a G-Brownian motion with…
We apply Lindeberg's method, invented to prove a central limit theorem, to analyze the moderate deviations around such a central limit theorem. In particular, we will show moderate deviation principles for martingales as well as for random sums, in the latter situation both, in the case when the limit distribution is Gaussian or non-Gaussian. Moreover in the Gaussian case we show moderate deviations for random sums using bounds on cumulants, alternatively. Finally, we also prove a large deviation principle for certain random sums.
In this paper, we provide a central limit theorem for the finite-dimensional marginal distributions of empirical processes $(Z_n(f))_{f\in\mathcal{F}}$ whose index set $\mathcal{F}$ is a family of cluster functionals valued on blocks of values of a stationary random field. The practicality and applicability of the result depends mainly on the usual Lindeberg condition and a sequence $T_n$ which summarizes the dependence between the blocks of the random field values. Finally, as application, we use the previous result in order to show the Gaussian asymptotic behavior of the iso-extremogram esti…
We refine the classical Lindeberg-Feller central limit theorem by obtaining asymptotic bounds on the Kolmogorov distance, the Wasserstein distance, and the parametrized Prokhorov distances in terms of a Lindeberg index. We thus obtain more general approximate central limit theorems, which roughly state that the row-wise sums of a triangular array are approximately asymptotically normal if the array approximately satisfies Lindeberg's condition. This allows us to continue to provide information in non-standard settings in which the classical central limit theorem fails to hold. Stein's method p…
By the Lindeberg principle, we develop in this paper an approximation to one dimensional (possibly) asymmetric $α$-stable distributions with $α\in (0,2)$ in the smooth Wasserstein distance. It is the first time that the general stable central limit theorem is proved by the Lindeberg principle, and that this theorem with $α\in (0,1]$ is proved by a new method other than Fourier analysis. Our main tools are a Taylor-like expansion and a Kolmogorov forward equation.
We give a simple and general central limit theorem for a triangular array of m-dependent variables. The result requires only a Lindeberg condition and avoids unnecessary extra conditions that have been used earlier. The result applies also to increasing $m=m(n)$, provided the Lindeberg condition is modified accordingly. This improves earlier results by several authors.
Following (Shevtsova, 2010) we introduce detailed classification of the asymptotically exact constants in natural estimates of the rate of convergence in the Lindeberg central limit theorem, namely in Esseen's, Rozovskii's, and Wang-Ahmad's inequalities and their structural improvements obtained in our previous works. The above inequalities involve algebraic truncated third-order moments and the classical Lindeberg fraction and assume finiteness only the second-order moments of random summands. We present lower bounds for the introduced asymptotically exact constants as well as for the univers…
In this paper we extend a central limit theorem of Peligrad for uniformly strong mixing random fields satisfying the Lindeberg condition in the absence of stationarity property. More precisely, we study the asymptotic normality of the partial sums of uniformly $α$-mixing non-stationary random fields satisfying the Lindeberg condition, in the presence of an extra dependence assumption involving maximal correlations.
We present a short proof of the central limit theorem which is elementary in the sense that no knowledge of characteristic functions, linear operators, or other advanced results are needed. Our proof is based on Lindeberg's trick of swapping a term for a normal random variable in turn. The modifications needed to prove the stronger Lindeberg-Feller central limit theorem are addressed at the end.
We prove weak laws of large numbers and central limit theorems of Lindeberg type for empirical centres of mass (empirical Fréchet means) of independent non-identically distributed random variables taking values in Riemannian manifolds. In order to prove these theorems we describe and prove a simple kind of Lindeberg-Feller central approximation theorem for vector-valued random variables, which may be of independent interest and is therefore the subject of a self-contained section. This vector-valued result allows us to clarify the number of conditions required for the central limit theorem for…
We provide explicit bounds on the Wasserstein distance between discrete time martingales and the standard normal distribution. The proofs are based on a combination of Lindeberg's and Stein's method.
We study the free central limit theorem for not necessarily identically distributed free random variables where the limiting distribution is the semicircle distribution. Starting from an estimate for the Kolmogorov distance between the measure of suitably normalized sums of free random variables and the semicircle distribution without any moment condition, we show the free Lindeberg central limit theorem and improve the known results on rates of convergence under the conditions of the existence of the third moments.
The central limit theorem of martingales is the fundamental tool for studying the convergence of stochastic processes. The central limit theorem and functional central limit theorem are obtained for martingale like random variables under the sub-linear expectation by Zhang (2019). In this paper, we consider the multi-dimensional martingale like random vectors and establish a functional central limit theorem. As applications, the Lindeberg central limit theorem for independent random vectors is established, and the sufficient and necessary conditions of the central limit theorem for independent…
We provide an abstract multivariate central limit theorem with the Lindeberg-type error bounded in terms of Lipschitz functions (Wasserstein 1-distance) or functions with bounded second or third derivatives. The result is proved by means of Stein's method. For sums of i.i.d. random vectors with finite third absolute moment, the optimal rate of convergence is established (that is, we eliminate the logarithmic factor in the case of Lipschitz test functions). We indicate how the result could be applied to certain other dependence structures, but do not derive bounds explicitly.
Long-range dependence in time series may yield non-central limit theorems. We show that there are analogous time series in free probability with limits represented by multiple Wigner integrals, where Hermite processes are replaced by non-commutative Tchebycheff processes. This includes the non-commutative fractional Brownian motion and the non-commutative Rosenblatt process.
We prove the central limit theorem (CLT) for a sequence of independent zero-mean random variables $ξ_j$, perturbed by predictable multiplicative factors $λ_j$ with values in intervals $[\underlineλ_j,\overlineλ_j]$. It is assumed that the sequences $\underlineλ_j$, $\overlineλ_j$ are bounded and satisfy some stabilization condition. Under the classical Lindeberg condition we show that the CLT limit, corresponding to a "worst" sequence $λ_j$, is described by the solution $v$ of one-dimensional $G$-heat equation. The main part of the proof follows Peng's approach to the CLT under sublinear expec…
In this article, we establish a central limit theorem for the capacity of the range process for a class of $d$-dimensional symmetric $α$-stable random walks with the index satisfying $d > 5α/2$. Our approach is based on controlling the limit behavior of the variance of the capacity of the range process which then allows us to apply the Lindeberg-Feller theorem.
We prove a general multidimensional invariance principle for a family of U-statistics based on freely independent non-commutative random variables of the type $U_n(S)$, where $U_n(x)$ is the $n$-th Chebyshev polynomial and $S$ is a standard semicircular element on a fixed $W^{\ast}$-probability space. As a consequence, we deduce that homogeneous sums based on random variables of this type are universal with respect to both semicircular and free Poisson approximations. Our results are stated in a general multidimensional setting and can be seen as a genuine extension of some recent findings by …
This paper focuses on studying the multilevel Monte Carlo method recently introduced by Giles [Oper. Res. 56 (2008) 607-617] which is significantly more efficient than the classical Monte Carlo one. Our aim is to prove a central limit theorem of Lindeberg-Feller type for the multilevel Monte Carlo method associated with the Euler discretization scheme. To do so, we prove first a stable law convergence theorem, in the spirit of Jacod and Protter [Ann. Probab. 26 (1998) 267-307], for the Euler scheme error on two consecutive levels of the algorithm. This leads to an accurate description of the o…
We define a new independence in non-commutative probability, called $α$-freeness, with respect to a triplet of states. This concept unifies several independences in non-commutative probability, in particular, free, monotone, antimonotone and Boolean ones as well as conditionally free, conditionally monotone and conditionally antimonotone independences. Moreover, the associative law of $α$-freeness is transferred to the other independences. As a consequence, $α$-free cumulants unify the cumulants for free, monotone, antimonotone and Boolean independences. The central limit theorem for $α$-freen…
A completion of counterexamples to the classical central limit theorem for pair- and triplewise independent and identically distributed random variables
本文完善了经典中心极限定理的反例研究,证明对于任意具有有限方差且不集中于单点的概率分布,均存在三重独立同分布随机变量序列使其标准化部分和依分布收敛于非正态分布,并可推广至 $ k $ 重独立性。
Non-asymptotic bounds for Gaussian and bootstrap approximation have recently attracted significant interest in high-dimensional statistics. This paper studies Berry-Esseen bounds for such approximations with respect to the multivariate Kolmogorov distance, in the context of a sum of $n$ random vectors that are $p$-dimensional and i.i.d. Up to now, a growing line of work has established bounds with mild logarithmic dependence on $p$. However, the problem of developing corresponding bounds with near $n^{-1/2}$ dependence on $n$ has remained largely unresolved. Within the setting of random vector…
The non-commutative Central Limit Theorem (CLT) introduced by Speicher in 1992 states that given almost any sequence of non-commutative random variables that commute or anti-commute pair-wise, the *-moments of the normalized partial sum S_N=(b_1+...+ b_N)/\sqrt{N} are given by a Wick-type formula refined to count the number of crossings in the underlying pair-partitions. When coupled with explicit matrix models, the theorem yields random matrix models for creation and annihilation operators on the q-Fock space of Bozejko and Speicher. In this paper, we derive a non-commutative CLT when the pai…
In this paper we propose a new approach to the central limit theorem (CLT), based on functions of bounded Féchet variation for the continuously differentiable linear statistics of random matrix ensembles which relies on: a weaker form of a large deviation principle for the operator norm; a Poincaré-type inequality for the linear statistics; and the existence of a second-order limit distribution. This approach frames into a single setting many known random matrix ensembles and, as a consequence, classical central limit theorems for linear statistics are recovered and new ones are established, e…
Stochastic approximation algorithms have been the subject of an enormous body of literature, both theoretical and applied. Recently, Laruelle and Pagès (2013) presented a link between the stochastic approximation and response-adaptive designs in clinical trials based on randomized urn models investigated in Bai and Hu (1999, 2005), and derived the asymptotic normality or central limit theorem for the normalized procedure using a central limit theorem for the stochastic approximation algorithm. However, the classical central limit theorem for the stochastic approximation algorithm does not incl…
We develop a new quantitative approach to a multidimensional version of the well-known {\it de Jong's central limit theorem} under optimal conditions, stating that a sequence of Hoeffding degenerate $U$-statistics whose fourth cumulants converge to zero satisfies a CLT, as soon as a Lindeberg-Feller type condition is verified. Our approach allows one to deduce explicit (and presumably optimal) Berry-Esseen bounds in the case of general $U$-statistics of arbitrary order $d\geq1$. One of our main findings is that, for vectors of $U$-statistics satisfying de Jong' s conditions and whose covarianc…
We consider $n\times n$ real symmetric and Hermitian Wigner random matrices $n^{-1/2}W$ with independent (modulo symmetry condition) entries and the (null) sample covariance matrices $n^{-1}X^*X$ with independent entries of $m\times n$ matrix $X$. Assuming first that the 4th cumulant (excess) $κ_4$ of entries of $W$ and $X$ is zero and that their 4th moments satisfy a Lindeberg type condition, we prove that linear statistics of eigenvalues of the above matrices satisfy the central limit theorem (CLT) as $n\to\infty$, $m\to\infty$, $m/n\to c\in[0,\infty)$ with the same variance as for Gaussian …
Consider a discrete-time martingale, and let $V^2$ be its normalized quadratic variation. As $V^2$ approaches 1, and provided that some Lindeberg condition is satisfied, the distribution of the rescaled martingale approaches the Gaussian distribution. For any $p\geq 1$, (Ann. Probab. 16 (1988) 275-299) gave a bound on the rate of convergence in this central limit theorem that is the sum of two terms, say $A_p+B_p$, where up to a constant, $A_p={\|V^2-1\|}_p^{p/(2p+1)}$. Here we discuss the optimality of this term, focusing on the restricted class of martingales with bounded increments. In this…
We give a complete description of the absolute of commutative finitely generated groups and semigroups. The absolute (previously called the exit boundary) is a further elaboration of the notion of the boundary of a random walk on a group (the Poisson--Furstenberg boundary); namely, the absolute of a (semi)group is the set of ergodic central measures on the compactum of all infinite trajectories of a simple random walk on the group. Related notions have been discussed in the probability literature: Martin boundary, entrance and exit boundaries (Dynkin), central measures on path spaces of graphs…
We prove a Central Limit Theorem (CLT) in the non-commutative setting of random matrix products where the underlying process is driven by a subshift of finite type (SFT) with Markov measure. We use the martingale method introduced by Y. Benoist and J.F. Quint in the iid setting.
