Let M be a compact Riemannian manifold without boundary and let H be a self-adjoint generalized Laplace operator acting on sections in a bundle over M. We give a path integral formula for the solution to the corresponding heat equation. This is based on approximating path space by finite dimensional spaces of geodesic polygons. We also show a uniform convergence result for the heat kernels. This yields a simple and natural proof for the Hess-Schrader-Uhlenbrock estimate and a path integral formula for the trace of the heat operator.
We introduce renormalized integrals which generalize conventional measure theoretic integrals. One approximates the integration domain by measure spaces and defines the integral as the limit of integrals over the approximating spaces. This concept is implicitly present in many mathematical contexts such as Cauchy's principal value, the determinant of operators on a Hilbert space and the Fourier transform of an $L^p$-function. We use renormalized integrals to define a path integral on manifolds by approximation via geodesic polygons. The main part of the paper is dedicated to the proof of a pat…
We survey recent results on inverse problems for geodesic X-ray transforms and other linear and non-linear geometric inverse problems for Riemannian metrics, connections and Higgs fields defined on manifolds with boundary.
We prove a curvature pinching result for the Ricci flow on asymptotically flat manifolds: if an asymptotically flat manifold of dimension $n\geq 3$ has scale-invariant integral norm of curvature sufficiently pinched relative to the inverse of its Sobolev constant, then the Ricci flow starting from this manifold exists for all positive times and converges to flat Euclidean space. In particular our result implies that the initial manifold must have been diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^n$.
In this paper we prove that, under an explicit integral pinching assumption between the $L^2$-norm of the Ricci curvature and the $L^2$-norm of the scalar curvature, a closed 3-manifold with positive scalar curvature admits an Einstein metric with positive curvature. In particular this implies that the manifold is diffeomorphic to a quotient of ${\Bbb S}^3$.
We investigate the integral conditions to extend the mean curvature flow in a Riemannian manifold. We prove that the mean curvature flow solution with finite total mean curvature on a finite time interval $[0,T)$ can be extended over time $T$. Moreover, we show that the condition is optimal in some sense.
We define the notion of a generic integral element for the Griffiths distribution on a weight two period domain, draw the analogy with the classical contact distribution, and then show how to explicitly construct an infinite-dimensional family of integral manifolds tangent to a given element.
We give time-slicing path integral formulas for solutions to the heat equation corresponding to a self-adjoint Laplace type operator acting on sections of a vector bundle over a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary. More specifically, we show that such a solution can be approximated by integrals over finite-dimensional path spaces of piecewise geodesics subordinated to increasingly fine partitions of the time interval. We consider a subclass of mixed boundary conditions which includes standard Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions.
In this article, we first establish the main tool - an integral formula for Riemannian manifolds with multiple boundary components (or without boundary). This formula generalizes Reilly's original formula from \cite{Re2} and the recent result from \cite{QX}. It provides a robust tool for sub-static manifolds regardless of the underlying topology. Using this formula and suitable elliptic PDEs, we prove Heintze-Karcher type inequalities for bounded domains in general sub-static manifolds which recovers some of the results from Brendle \cite{Br} as special cases. On the other hand, we prove a Min…
We prove that some Riemannian manifolds with boundary under an explicit integral pinching are spherical space forms. Precisely, we show that 3-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with totally geodesic boundary, positive scalar curvature and an explicit integral pinching between the $L^2$-norm of their scalar curvature and the $L^2$-norm of their Ricci tensor are spherical space forms with totally geodesic boundary. Moreover, we prove also that 4-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with umbilic boundary, positive Yamabe invariant and an explicit integral pinching between the total integral of their $…
In this paper we consider the geometric behavior near infinity of some Einstein manifolds $(X^n, g)$ with Weyl curvature belonging to a certain $L^p$ space. Namely, we show that if $(X^n, g)$, $n \geq 7$, admits an essential set and has its Weyl curvature in $L^p$ for some $1<p<\frac{n-1}{2}$, then $(X^n, g)$ must be asymptotically locally hyperbolic. One interesting application of this theorem is to show a rigidity result for the hyperbolic space under an integral condition for the curvature.
In a contact manifold (M^5, alpha), we consider almost complex structures J which satisfy, for any vector v in the horizontal distribution, d alpha (v,Jv) = 0. We prove that integral cycles whose approximate tangent planes have the property of being J-invariant are in fact smooth Legendrian curves except possibly at isolated points and we investigate how such structures J are related to calibrations.
In this paper, we focus our study on the ends of a locally conformally flat complete manifold with finite total $Q$-curvature. We prove that for such a manifold, the integral of the $Q$-curvature equals an integral multiple of a dimensional constant $c_n$, where $c_n$ is the integral of the $Q$-curvature on the unit $n$-sphere. It provides further evidence that the $Q$-curvature on a locally conformally flat manifold controls geometry as the Gaussian curvature does in two dimension.
We study the geodesic X-ray transform $I_Γ$ of tensor fields on a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ with non-necessarily convex boundary and with possible conjugate points. We assume that $I_Γ$ is known for geodesics belonging to an open set $Γ$ with endpoint on the boundary. We prove generic s-injectivity and a stability estimate under some topological assumptions and under the condition that for any $(x,ξ)\in T^*M$, there is a geodesic without conjugate points in $Γ$ through $x$ normal to $ξ$.
We provide an improvement of a half power of log to standard bounds on integrals of Laplace eigenfunctions over submanifolds of codimension 2 or more, where the ambient space is a compact Riemannian manifold with negative sectional curvature. We provide the same improvement for hypersurfaces whose second fundamental form differs sufficiently from that of spheres of infinite radius. This result extends previous ones obtained in the 2-dimensional setting by Chen and Sogge; Sogge, Xi, and Zhang; and the author.
In this paper we provide an integral representation of the fractional Laplace-Beltrami operator for general riemannian manifolds which has several interesting applications. We give two different proofs, in two different scenarios, of essentially the same result. One of them deals with compact manifolds with or without boundary, while the other approach treats the case of riemannian manifolds without boundary whose Ricci curvature is uniformly bounded below.
A method for proving symmetrization inequalities for some elliptic p.d.e.'s on manifolds equipped with appropriate isoperimetric inequalities is outlined. The method is based on a modification of an approach of Baernstein. The question of what is the most general result that can be proved in this way is still open, and the author can be consulted if the reader is interested in this question.
We obtain a priori local pointwise second derivative estimates for solutions $u$ to a class of augmented Hessian equations on Riemannian manifolds, in terms of the $C^1$ norm and certain $W^{2,p}$ norms of $u$. We consider the case that no structural assumptions are imposed on either the augmenting term or the right hand side of the equation, and the case where these terms are convex in the gradient variable. In the latter case, under an additional ellipticity condition we prove that the dependence on any $W^{2,p}$ norm can be dropped. Our results are derived using integral estimates.
We prove a bilinear $L^2(\R^d) \times L^2(\R^d) \to L^2(\R^{d+1})$ estimate for a pair of oscillatory integral operators with different asymptotic parameters and phase functions satisfying a transversality condition. This is then used to prove a bilinear refinement to Strichartz estimates on closed manifolds, similar to that on $\R^d$, but at a relevant semi-classical scale. These estimates will be employed elsewhere to prove global well-posedness below $H^1$ for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on closed surfaces.
