A method for proving symmetrization inequalities for some elliptic p.d.e.'s on manifolds equipped with appropriate isoperimetric inequalities is outlined. The method is based on a modification of an approach of Baernstein. The question of what is the most general result that can be proved in this way is still open, and the author can be consulted if the reader is interested in this question.
We generalize Polya-Szego inequality to integrands depending on $u$ and its gradient. Under minimal additional assumptions, we establish equality cases in this generalized inequality. We also give relevant applications of our study to a class of quasi-linear elliptic equations and systems.
We prove some Pólya-Szegö type inequalities which involve couples of functions and their rearrangements. Our inequalities reduce to the classical Pólya-Szegö principle when the two functions coincide. As an application, we give a different proof of a comparison result for solutions to Dirichlet boundary value problems for Laplacian equations proved by A. Alvino, G. Trombetti, J. I. Diaz and P. L. Lions.
In this paper we introduce new symmetrization with respect to mixed volume or anisotropic curvature integral, which generalizes the one with respect to quermassintegral due to Talenti and Tso. We show a Pólya-Szego type principle for such symmetrization -- it diminishes the anisotropic Hessian integral for quasi-convex functions. We achieve this by a systematic study of invariants on non-symmetric matrices with real eigenvalues and the higher order anisotropic mean curvatures of level sets, which may be of independent interest. As applications, we establish a comparison principle for anisotrop…
Eshelby showed that if an inclusion is of elliptic or ellipsoidal shape then for any uniform elastic loading the field inside the inclusion is uniform. He then conjectured that the converse is true, i.e., that if the field inside an inclusion is uniform for all uniform loadings, then the inclusion is of elliptic or ellipsoidal shape. We call this the weak Eshelby conjecture. In this paper we prove this conjecture in three dimensions. In two dimensions, a stronger conjecture, which we call the strong Eshelby conjecture, has been proved: If the field inside an inclusion is uniform for a single u…

We obtain new oscillation inequalities in metric spaces in terms of the Peetre $K-$functional and the isoperimetric profile. Applications provided include a detailed study of Fractional Sobolev inequalities and the Morrey-Sobolev embedding theorems in different contexts. In particular we include a detailed study of Gaussian measures as well as probablity measures between Gaussian and exponential. We show a kind of reverse Polya-Szego principle that allows us to obtain continuity as a self improvement from boundedness, using symetrization inequalities. Our methods also allow for precise estimat…
An inequality on torsional rigidity is established. For tangential polygons this inequality is stronger than an inequality of Polya and Szego for convex domains. (A survey of related work, not in the journal submission, is presented in the arXiv version.)
We prove a Payne-Weinberger type inequality for the $p$-Laplacian Neumann eigenvalues ($p\ge 2$). The inequality provides the sharp upper bound on convex domains, in terms of the diameter alone, of the best constants in Poincaré inequality. The key point is the implementation of a refinement of the classical Pólya-Szegö inequality for the symmetric decreasing rearrangement which yields an optimal weighted Wirtinger inequality.
Let $\mathbb{H}^{n}=\mathbb{C}^{n}\times\mathbb{R}$ be the $n$-dimensional Heisenberg group, $Q=2n+2$ be the homogeneous dimension of $\mathbb{H}^{n}$. We extend the well-known concentration-compactness principle on finite domains in the Euclidean spaces of \ P. L. Lions to the setting of the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^{n}$. Furthermore, we also obtain the corresponding concentration-compactness principle for the Sobolev space $HW^{1,Q}\left( \mathbb{H}^{n}\right) $ on the entire Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^{n}$. Our results improve the sharp Trudinger-Moser inequality on domains of finite …
We consider the minimization of the NLS energy on a metric tree, either rooted or unrooted, subject to a mass constraint. With respect to the same problem on other types of metric graphs, several new features appear, such as the existence of minimizers with positive energy, and the emergence of unexpected threshold phenomena. We also study the problem with a radial symmetry constraint that is in principle different from the free problem due to the failure of the Pólya-Szegő inequality for radial rearrangements. A key role is played by a new Poincaré inequality with remainder.
In this paper we prove a mass-capacity inequality and a volumetric Penrose inequality for conformally flat manifolds, in arbitrary dimensions. As a by-product of the proofs, Pólya-Szegö and Aleksandrov-Fenchel inequalities for mean-convex Euclidean domains are obtained. For each inequality, the case of equality is characterized.
Though much work has been done with respect to the existence of extremals of the critical first order Trudinger-Moser inequalities in $W^{1,n}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and higher order Adams inequalities on finite domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, whether there exists an extremal function for the critical higher order Adams inequalities on the entire space $\mathbb{R}^n$ still remains open. The current paper represents the first attempt in this direction. The classical blow-up procedure cannot apply to solving the existence of critical Adams type inequality because of the absence of the Pólya-Szegö\ type …
We prove that if $M$ is a closed $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold, $n \ge 3$, with ${\rm Ric}\ge n-1$ and for which the optimal constant in the critical Sobolev inequality equals the one of the $n$-dimensional sphere $\mathbb{S}^n$, then $M$ is isometric to $\mathbb{S}^n$. An almost-rigidity result is also established, saying that if equality is almost achieved, then $M$ is close in the measure Gromov-Hausdorff sense to a spherical suspension. These statements are obtained in the ${\rm RCD}$-setting of (possibly non-smooth) metric measure spaces satisfying synthetic lower Ricci curvature bo…
