We study the two-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau functional in a domain with corners for exterior magnetic field strengths near the critical field where the transition from the superconducting to the normal state occurs. We discuss and clarify the definition of this field and obtain a complete asymptotic expansion for it in the large $κ$ regime. Furthermore, we discuss nucleation of superconductivity at the boundary.
We compute the $L^2$-norm of the minimizer of the Ginzburg-Landau functional in a planar domain with a finite number of corners. Our computations are valid for a uniform applied magnetic field, large Ginzburg-Landau parameter and in the regime where superconductivity is confined near the corners of the domain.
We study the Ginzburg-Landau functional describing an extreme type-II superconductor wire with cross section with finitely many corners at the boundary. We derive the ground state energy asymptotics up to $ o(1) $ errors in the surface superconductivity regime, i.e., between the second and third critical fields. We show that, compared to the case of smooth domains, each corner provides an additional contribution of order $ \mathcal{O}(1) $ depending on the corner opening angle. The corner energy is in turn obtained from an implicit model problem in an infinite wedge-like domain with fixed magn…
Type-II superconductivity is known to persist close to the sample surface in presence of a strong magnetic field. As a consequence, the ground state energy in the Ginzburg-Landau theory is approximated by an effective one-dimensional model. As shown in [CG2], the presence of corners on the surface affects the energy of the sample with a non-trivial contribution. In [CG2], the two-dimensional model problem providing the corner energy is implicitly identified and, although no explicit dependence of the energy on the corner opening angle is derived, a conjecture about its form is proposed. We stu…
The Neumann-Poincaré (NP) operator naturally appears in the context of metamaterials as it may be used to represent the solutions of elliptic transmission problems via potentiel theory. In particular, its spectral properties are closely related to the well-posedness of these PDE's, in the typical case where one considers a bounded inclusion of homogeneous plasmonic metamaterial embedded in a homogeneous background dielectric medium. In a recent work, M. Perfekt and M. Putinar have shown that the NP operator of a 2D curvilinear polygon has an essential spectrum, which depends only on the angles…
We study the time-dependent Ginzburg--Landau equations in a three-dimensional curved polyhedron (possibly nonconvex). Compared with the previous works, we prove existence and uniqueness of a global weak solution based on weaker regularity of the solution in the presence of edges or corners, where the magnetic potential may not be in $L^2(0,T;H^1(Ω)^3)$.
We study the Robin Laplacian in a domain with two corners of the same opening, and we calculate the asymptotics of the two lowest eigenvalues as the distance between the corners increases to infinity.
We consider the 2D incompressible Euler equation on a corner domain $Ω$ with angle $νπ$ with $\frac{1}{2}<ν<1$. We prove that if the initial vorticity $ω_0 \in L^{1}(Ω)\cap L^{\infty}(Ω)$ and if $ω_0$ is non-negative and supported on one side of the angle bisector of the domain, then the weak solutions are unique. This is the first result which proves uniqueness when the velocity is far from Lipschitz and the initial vorticity is nontrivial around the boundary.
Based on the a priori estimates in our previous work \cite{MW}, we continue to investigate the water-waves problem in a bounded two dimensional corner domain in this paper. We prove the local well-posedness of the solution to the water-waves system when the contact angles are less than $\fracπ{16}$.
We study the analyticity of the semigroups generated by some classes of degenerate second order differential operators in the space of continuous function on a domain with corners. These semigroups arise from the theory of dynamics of populations.
For a large class of non smooth bounded domains, existence of a global weak solution of the 2D Euler equations, with bounded vorticity, was established by Gérard-Varet and Lacave. In the case of sharp domains, the question of uniqueness for such weak solutions is more involved due to the bad behavior of $Δ^{-1}$ close to the boundary. In the present work, we show uniqueness for any bounded and simply connected domain with a finite number of corners of angles smaller than $π/2$. Our strategy relies on a log-Lipschitz type regularity for the velocity field.
We consider the two-dimensional Euler equations in non-smooth domains with corners. It is shown that if the angle of the corner $θ$ is strictly less than $π/2$, the Lipschitz estimate of the vorticity at the corner is at most single exponential growth and the upper bound is sharp. %near the stagnation point. For the corner with the larger angle $π/2 < θ<2π$, $θ\neq π$, we construct an example of the vorticity which loses continuity instantaneously. For the case $θ\le π/2$, the vorticity remains continuous inside the domain. We thus identify the threshold of the angle for the vorticity maintain…
We study spectral properties of the Neumann-Poincaré operator on planar domains with corners with particular emphasis on existence of continuous spectrum and pure point spectrum. We show that the rate of resonance at continuous spectrum is different from that at eigenvalues, and then derive a method to distinguish continuous spectrum from eigenvalues. We perform computational experiments using the method to see whether continuous spectrum and pure point spectrum appear on domains with corners. For the computations we use a modification of the Nyström method which makes it possible to construct…
When the velocity field is not a priori known to be globally almost Lipschitz, global uniqueness of solutions to the two-dimensional Euler equations has been established only in some special cases, and the solutions to which these results apply share the property that the diffuse part of the vorticity is constant near the points where the velocity is insufficiently regular. Assuming that the latter holds initially, the challenge is then to propagate this property along the Euler dynamic via an appropriate control of the Lagrangian trajectories. In domains with obtuse corners and sufficiently s…
We consider the elliptic estimates for Dirichlet-Neumann operator related to the water-wave problem on a two-dimensional corner domain in this paper. Due to the singularity of the boundary, there will be singular parts in the solution of the elliptic problem for D-N operator. To begin with, we study elliptic problems with mixed boundary condition to derive singularity decompositions and estimates. Based on the analysis, we present the estimates for both D-N operator and its shape derivative with the existence of singular parts.
We study the eigenvalues of the Laplacian with a strong attractive Robin boundary condition in curvilinear polygons. It was known from previous works that the asymptotics of several first eigenvalues is essentially determined by the corner openings, while only rough estimates were available for the next eigenvalues. Under some geometric assumptions, we go beyond the critical eigenvalue number and give a precise asymptotics of any individual eigenvalue by establishing a link with an effective Schrödinger-type operator on the boundary of the domain with boundary conditions at the corners.
Based on the $H^2$ existence of the solution, we investigate weighted estimates for a mixed boundary elliptic system in a two-dimensional corner domain, when the contact angle $\om\in(0,π/2)$. This system is closely related to the Dirichlet-Neumann operator in the water-waves problem, and the weight we choose is decided by singularities of the mixed boundary system. Meanwhile, we also prove similar weighted estimates with a different weight for the Dirichlet boundary problem as well as the Neumann boundary problem when $\om\in(0,π)$.
For smooth domains, Liu et al. (Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 60: 1443-1487, 2007) used optimal estimates for the commutator of the Laplacian and the Leray projection operator to establish well-posedness of an extended Navier-Stokes dynamics. In their work, the pressure is not determined by incompressibility, but rather by a certain formula involving the Laplace-Leray commutator. A key estimate of Liu et al. controls the commutator strictly by the Laplacian in energy norm at leading order. In this paper we show that this strict control fails in a large family of bounded planar domains with corners. H…
We study the regularity of the distance function to the boundary of a domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$, with respect to some asymmetric norms. We allow the boundary of the domain to have corners. We obtain an explicit formula for the second derivative of these distance functions. Furthermore, we study a generalized notion of the ridge of a domain, which is the set of singularities of a distance function to the boundary of the domain. We completely characterize the ridge by using a generalized notion of curvature.
In this article, we consider linear hyperbolic Initial and Boundary Value Problems (IBVP) in a rectangle (or possibly curvilinear polygonal domains) in both the constant and variable coefficients cases. We use semigroup method instead of Fourier analysis to achieve the well-posedness of the linear hyperbolic system, and we find by diagonalization that there are only two elementary modes in the system which we call hyperbolic and elliptic modes. The hyperbolic system in consideration is either symmetric or Friedrichs-symmetrizable.
The asymptotic behavior of the first eigenvalues of magnetic Laplacian operators with large magnetic fields and Neumann realization in smooth three-dimensional domains is characterized by model problems inside the domain or on its boundary. In two-dimensional polygonal domains, a new set of model problems on sectors has to be taken into account. In this paper, we consider the class of general corner domains. In dimension 3, they include as particular cases polyhedra and axisymmetric cones. We attach model problems not only to each point of the closure of the domain, but also to a hierarchy of …
We prove that the presence or absence of corners is spectrally determined in the following sense: any simply connected domain with piecewise smooth Lipschitz boundary cannot be isospectral to any connected domain, of any genus, which has smooth boundary. Moreover, we prove that amongst all domains with Lipschitz, piecewise smooth boundary and fixed genus, the presence or absence of corners is uniquely determined by the spectrum. This means that corners are an elementary geometric spectral invariant; one can hear corners.
We study the local recovery of an unknown piecewise constant anisotropic conductivity in EIT (electric impedance tomography) on certain bounded Lipschitz domains $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with corners. The measurement is conducted on a connected open subset of the boundary $\partialΩ$ of $Ω$ containing corners and is given as a localized Neumann-to-Dirichlet map. The above unknown conductivity is defined via a decomposition of $Ω$ into polygonal cells. Specifically, we consider a parallelogram-based decomposition and a trapezoid-based decomposition. We assume that the decomposition is known, but t…
We investigate the eigenvalue problem $-\text{div}(σ\nabla u) = λu\ (\mathscr{P})$ in a 2D domain $Ω$ divided into two regions $Ω_{\pm}$. We are interested in situations where $σ$ takes positive values on $Ω_{+}$ and negative ones on $Ω_{-}$. Such problems appear in time harmonic electromagnetics in the modeling of plasmonic technologies. In a recent work [15], we highlighted an unusual instability phenomenon for the source term problem associated with $(\mathscr{P})$: for certain configurations, when the interface between the subdomains $Ω_{\pm}$ presents a rounded corner, the solution may de…
We study the two dimensional water waves problem with surface tension in the case when there is a non-zero contact angle between the free surface and the bottom. In the presence of surface tension, dissipations take place at the contact point. Moreover, when the contact angle is less than $π/6$, no singularity appears in our settings. Using elliptic estimates in corner domains and a geometric approach, we prove an a priori estimate for the water waves problem.
We investigate the self-adjointness of the two-dimensional Dirac operator $D$, with quantum-dot and Lorentz-scalar $δ$-shell boundary conditions, on piecewise $C^2$ domains with finitely many corners. For both models, we prove the existence of a unique self-adjoint realization whose domain is included in the Sobolev space $H^{1/2}$, the formal form domain of the free Dirac operator. The main part of our paper consists of a description of the domain of $D^*$ in terms of the domain of $D$ and the set of harmonic functions that verify some mixed boundary conditions. Then, we give a detailed study…
We consider an inverse problem arising in thermo-/photo- acoustic tomography that amounts to reconstructing a function $f$ from its circular or spherical means with the centers lying on a given measurement surface. (Equivalently, these means can be expressed through the solution $u(t,x)$ of the wave equation with the initial pressure equal to $f$.) An explicit solution of this inverse problem is obtained in 3D for the surface that is the boundary of an open octet, and in 2D for the case when the centers of integration circles lie on two rays starting at the origin and intersecting at the angle…
We show that particle trajectories for positive vorticity solutions to the 2D Euler equations on fairly general bounded simply connected domains cannot reach the boundary in finite time. This includes domains with possibly nowhere $C^1$ boundaries and having corners with arbitrary angles, and can fail without the sign hypothesis when the domain has large angle corners. Hence positive vorticity solutions on such domains are Lagrangian, and we also obtain their uniqueness if the vorticity is initially constant near the boundary.
We announce a new result which shows that under either Dirichlet, Neumann, or Robin boundary conditions, the corners in a planar domain are a spectral invariant of the Laplacian. For the case of polygonal domains, we show how a locality principle, in the spirit of Kac's "principle of not feeling the boundary" can be used together with calculations of explicit model heat kernels to prove the result. In the process, we prove this locality principle for all three boundary conditions. Albeit previously known for Dirichlet boundary conditions, this appears to be new for Robin and Neumann boundary c…
