We study the regularity of the distance function to the boundary of a domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$, with respect to some asymmetric norms. We allow the boundary of the domain to have corners. We obtain an explicit formula for the second derivative of these distance functions. Furthermore, we study a generalized notion of the ridge of a domain, which is the set of singularities of a distance function to the boundary of the domain. We completely characterize the ridge by using a generalized notion of curvature.
Based on the $H^2$ existence of the solution, we investigate weighted estimates for a mixed boundary elliptic system in a two-dimensional corner domain, when the contact angle $\om\in(0,π/2)$. This system is closely related to the Dirichlet-Neumann operator in the water-waves problem, and the weight we choose is decided by singularities of the mixed boundary system. Meanwhile, we also prove similar weighted estimates with a different weight for the Dirichlet boundary problem as well as the Neumann boundary problem when $\om\in(0,π)$.
In this paper we are concerned with the local well-posedness of the unsteady potential flows near a space corner of right angle, which could be formulated as an initial-boundary value problem of a hyperbolic equation of second order in a cornered-space domain. The corner singularity is the key difficulty in establishing the local well-posedness of the problem. Moreover, the boundary conditions on both edges of the corner angle are of Neumann-type and fail to satisfy the linear stability condition, which makes it more difficult to establish a priori estimates on the boundary terms in the analys…
In this article, we consider linear hyperbolic Initial and Boundary Value Problems (IBVP) in a rectangle (or possibly curvilinear polygonal domains) in both the constant and variable coefficients cases. We use semigroup method instead of Fourier analysis to achieve the well-posedness of the linear hyperbolic system, and we find by diagonalization that there are only two elementary modes in the system which we call hyperbolic and elliptic modes. The hyperbolic system in consideration is either symmetric or Friedrichs-symmetrizable.
A monotonicity approach to the study of the asymptotic behavior near corners of solutions to semilinear elliptic equations in domains with a conical boundary point is discussed. The presence of logarithms in the first term of the asymptotic expansion is excluded for boundary profiles sufficiently close to straight conical surfaces.
A recursive method for computing singular solutions in corners with homogeneous Dirichlet-Robin boundary condition with power-law coefficient variation
In this paper we describe the propagation of smooth (C^\infty) and Sobolev singularities for the wave equation on smooth manifolds with corners M equipped with a Riemannian metric g. That is, for X=MxR, P=D_t^2-Δ_M, and u locally in H^1 solving Pu=0 with homogeneous Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions, we show that the wave front set of u is a union of maximally extended generalized broken bicharacteristics. This result is a smooth counterpart of Lebeau's results for the propagation of analytic singularities on real analytic manifolds with appropriately stratified boundary. Our methods re…
We prove non-existence of nontrivial uniformly subsonic inviscid irrotational flows around several classes of solid bodies with two protruding corners, in particular vertical and angled flat plates; horizontal plates are the only case where solutions exists. This fills the gap between classical results on bodies with a single protruding corner on one hand and recent work on bodies with three or more protruding corners. Thus even with zero viscosity and slip boundary conditions solids can generate vorticity, in the sense of having at least one rotational but no irrotational solutions. Our obser…
We consider the one-phase Muskat problem modeling the dynamics of the free boundary of a single fluid in porous media. We prove local well-posedness for fluid interfaces that are general curves and can have singularities. In particular, the free boundary can have acute angle corners or cusps. Moreover, we show that isolated corners/cusps on the interface must be rigid, meaning the angle of the corner is preserved for a finite time, there is no rotation at the tip, the particle at the tip remains at the tip and the velocity of that particle at the tip points vertically downward.
We investigate the problem of calculating the Fredholm index of a geometric Dirac operator subject to local (e.g. Dirichlet and Neumann) and non-local (APS) boundary conditions posed on the strata of a manifold with corners. The boundary strata of the manifold with corners can intersect in higher codimension. To calculate the index we introduce a glueing construction and a corresponding Lie groupoid. We describe the Dirac operator subject to mixed boundary conditions via an equivariant family of Dirac operators on the fibers of the Lie groupoid. Using a heat kernel method with rescaling we der…
We consider the elliptic estimates for Dirichlet-Neumann operator related to the water-wave problem on a two-dimensional corner domain in this paper. Due to the singularity of the boundary, there will be singular parts in the solution of the elliptic problem for D-N operator. To begin with, we study elliptic problems with mixed boundary condition to derive singularity decompositions and estimates. Based on the analysis, we present the estimates for both D-N operator and its shape derivative with the existence of singular parts.
Manifolds with boundary and with corners form categories ${\bf Man}\subset{\bf Man^b}\subset{\bf Man^c}$. A manifold with corners $X$ has two notions of tangent bundle: the tangent bundle $TX$, and the b-tangent bundle ${}^bTX$. The usual definition of smooth structure uses $TX$, as $f:X\to\mathbb{R}$ is defined to be smooth if $\nabla^kf$ exists as a continuous section of $\bigotimes^kT^*X$ for all $k\ge 0$. We define 'manifolds with analytic corners', or 'manifolds with a-corners', with a different smooth structure, in which roughly $f:X\to\mathbb{R}$ is smooth if ${}^b\nabla^kf$ exists as a…
We consider the perturbation of an electric potential due to an insulating inclusion with corners. This perturbation is known to admit a multipole expansion whose coefficients are linear combinations of generalized polarization tensors. We define new geometric factors of a simple planar domain in terms of a conformal mapping associated with the domain. The geometric factors share properties of the generalized polarization tensors and are the Fourier series coefficients of a kind of generalized external angle of the inclusion boundary. Since the generalized external angle contains the Dirac del…
We consider the 2D incompressible Euler equation on a corner domain $Ω$ with angle $νπ$ with $\frac{1}{2}<ν<1$. We prove that if the initial vorticity $ω_0 \in L^{1}(Ω)\cap L^{\infty}(Ω)$ and if $ω_0$ is non-negative and supported on one side of the angle bisector of the domain, then the weak solutions are unique. This is the first result which proves uniqueness when the velocity is far from Lipschitz and the initial vorticity is nontrivial around the boundary.
In this paper we prove the propagation of singularities for the wave equation on differential forms with natural (i.e. relative or absolute) boundary conditions on Lorentzian manifolds with corners, which in particular includes a formulation of Maxwell's equations. These results are analogous to those obtained by the author for the scalar wave equation and for the wave equation on systems with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions earlier. The main novelty is thus the presence of natural boundary conditions, which effectively make the problem non-scalar, even `to leading order', at corners …
We consider the elastic stress near a hole with corners in an infinite plate under biaxial stress. The elasticity problem is formulated using complex Goursat functions, resulting in a set of singular integro-differential equations on the boundary. The resulting boundary integral equations are solved numerically using a Chebyshev collocation method which is augmented by a fractional power term, derived by asymptotic analysis of the corner region, to resolve stress singularities at corners of the hole. We apply our numerical method to the test case of the hole formed by two partially-overlapping…
We consider corner scattering for the operator $\nabla \cdot γ(x)\nabla +k^2ρ(x)$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$, with $γ$ a positive definite symmetric matrix and $ρ$ a positive scalar function. A corner is referred to one that is on the boundary of the (compact) support of $γ(x)-I$ or $ρ(x)-1$, where $I$ stands for the identity matrix. We assume that $γ$ is a scalar function in a small neighborhood of the corner. We show that any admissible incident field will be scattered by such corners, which are allowed to be concave. Moreover, we provide a brief discussion on the existence of non-scattering waves wh…
Consider a solution $f\in C^{2}(Ω)$ of a prescribed mean curvature equation \[ {\rm div}\left(\frac{\nabla f}{\sqrt{1+|\nabla f|^{2}}}\right)=2H(x,f) \ \ \ \ {\rm in} \ \ Ω\subset R^{2}, \] where $Ω$ is a domain whose boundary has a corner at ${\cal O}=(0,0)\in\partialΩ$ and the angular measure of this corner is $2α,$ for some $α\in (0,π).$ Suppose $\sup_{x\inΩ} |f(x)|$ and $\sup_{x\inΩ} |H(x,f(x))|$ are both finite. If $α>\fracπ{2},$ then the (nontangential) radial limits of $f$ at ${\cal O},$ \[ Rf(θ) = \lim_{r\downarrow 0} f(r\cos(θ),r\sin(θ)), \] were recently proven by the authors to exis…
We prove that the presence or absence of corners is spectrally determined in the following sense: any simply connected domain with piecewise smooth Lipschitz boundary cannot be isospectral to any connected domain, of any genus, which has smooth boundary. Moreover, we prove that amongst all domains with Lipschitz, piecewise smooth boundary and fixed genus, the presence or absence of corners is uniquely determined by the spectrum. This means that corners are an elementary geometric spectral invariant; one can hear corners.
We study the Robin Laplacian in a domain with two corners of the same opening, and we calculate the asymptotics of the two lowest eigenvalues as the distance between the corners increases to infinity.
We study the eigenvalues of the Laplacian with a strong attractive Robin boundary condition in curvilinear polygons. It was known from previous works that the asymptotics of several first eigenvalues is essentially determined by the corner openings, while only rough estimates were available for the next eigenvalues. Under some geometric assumptions, we go beyond the critical eigenvalue number and give a precise asymptotics of any individual eigenvalue by establishing a link with an effective Schrödinger-type operator on the boundary of the domain with boundary conditions at the corners.
We consider the influence of elasticity and anisotropic surface energy on the energy-minimizing shape of a two-dimensional void under biaxial loading. In particular, we consider void shapes with corners for which the strain energy density is singular at the corner. The elasticity problem is formulated as a boundary integral equation using complex potentials. By incorporating the asymptotic behavior of the singular elastic fields at corners of the void, we develop a numerical spectral method for determining the stress for a class of arbitrary void shapes and corner angles. We minimize the total…
For every connected manifold with corners we use a homology theory called conormal homology, defined in terms of faces and incidences and whose cycles correspond geometrically to corner's cycles. Its Euler characteristic (over the rationals, dimension of the total even space minus the dimension of the total odd space), $χ_{cn}:=χ_0-χ_1$, is given by the alternated sum of the number of (open) faces of a given codimension. The main result of the present paper is that for a compact connected manifold with corners $X$ given as a finite product of manifolds with corners of codimension less or equal…
We study the two-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau functional in a domain with corners for exterior magnetic field strengths near the critical field where the transition from the superconducting to the normal state occurs. We discuss and clarify the definition of this field and obtain a complete asymptotic expansion for it in the large $κ$ regime. Furthermore, we discuss nucleation of superconductivity at the boundary.
We define self-adjoint extensions of the Hodge Laplacian on Lipschitz domains in Riemannian manifolds, corresponding to either the absolute or the relative boundary condition, and examine regularity properties of these operators' domains and form domains. We obtain results valid for general Lipschitz domains, and stronger results for a special class of ``almost convex'' domains, which apply to domains with corners.
We announce a new result which shows that under either Dirichlet, Neumann, or Robin boundary conditions, the corners in a planar domain are a spectral invariant of the Laplacian. For the case of polygonal domains, we show how a locality principle, in the spirit of Kac's "principle of not feeling the boundary" can be used together with calculations of explicit model heat kernels to prove the result. In the process, we prove this locality principle for all three boundary conditions. Albeit previously known for Dirichlet boundary conditions, this appears to be new for Robin and Neumann boundary c…
Let $(Ω,g)$ be a piecewise-smooth, bounded convex domain in $\R^2$ and consider $L^2$-normalized Neumann eigenfunctions $ϕ_λ$ with eigenvalue $λ^2$ and $u_λ:= ϕ_λ |_{\partial Ω}$ the associated Dirichlet data (ie. boundary restriction of $ϕ_λ$). Our first main result (Theorem \ref{T:non-con}) is a small-scale {\em non-concentration} estimate: We prove that for {\em any} $x_0 \in \overlineΩ,$ (including boundary corner points) and any $δ\in [0,1),$ $$ \| ϕ_h \|_{B(x_0,λ^{-δ})\cap Ω} = O(λ^{-δ/2}).$$ Our subsequent results involve applications of the nonconcentration estimate to upper bounds for…
We investigate the self-adjointness of the two-dimensional Dirac operator $D$, with quantum-dot and Lorentz-scalar $δ$-shell boundary conditions, on piecewise $C^2$ domains with finitely many corners. For both models, we prove the existence of a unique self-adjoint realization whose domain is included in the Sobolev space $H^{1/2}$, the formal form domain of the free Dirac operator. The main part of our paper consists of a description of the domain of $D^*$ in terms of the domain of $D$ and the set of harmonic functions that verify some mixed boundary conditions. Then, we give a detailed study…
