Motivic local systems over a curve in finite characteristic form a countable set endowed with an action of the absolute Galois group of rational numbers commuting with the Frobenius map. I will discuss three series of conjectures about such sets, based on an analogy with algebraic dynamics, on a formalism of commutative algebras of motivic integral operators, and on an analogy with
2-dimensional lattice models.
We prove that for $1$-motives defined over an algebraically closed subfield of $\C$, viewed as Nori motives, the motivic Galois group is the Mumford-Tate group. In particular, the Hodge realization of the tannakian category of (Nori) motives generated by $1$-motives is fully faithful.
As a higher genus version of universal mixed elliptic motives by Hain and Matsumoto, we consider mixed Teichmüller motives as certain motivic local systems on the moduli space of pointed curves. We show that the category of mixed Teichmüller motives is equivalent to a full subcategory of a certain product category of mixed Tate motives over Z and universal mixed elliptic motives. Furthermore, we show that unipotent fundamental torsors for the universal open curve give rise to a pro-object in the category of mixed Teichmüller motives. Our results can give a realization of motivic correlators pr…
For noetherian schemes of finite dimension over a field of characteristic exponent $p$, we study the triangulated categories of $\mathbf{Z}[1/p]$-linear mixed motives obtained from cdh-sheaves with transfers. We prove that these have many of the expected properties. In particular, the formalism of the six operations holds in this context. When we restrict ourselves to regular schemes, we also prove that these categories of motives are equivalent to the more classical triangulated categories of mixed motives constructed in terms of Nisnevich sheaves with transfers. Such a program is achieved by…
The purpose of this note is to prove that the Chow motive of the Fano surface of lines on the smooth cubic threefold is finite-dimensional in the sense of Kimura. This gives an example of a smooth projective variety that is not dominated by a product of curves but whose Chow motive is of Abelian type.
We define 1-motives of a variety X over a perfect field of positive characteristic which realize the etale cohomology groups of X in dimension and codimension one. This is the analogue in positive characteristic of previous results of Barbieri-Viale and Srinivas, except that we only consider the etale realization but also consider compactly supported cohomology. The dimension-1 case (called the Picard 1-motives) can be done by standard techniques, and indeed this case is probably well known. But the codimension-one case (Albanese 1-motive) requires stronger tools, namely a strong version of de…
We first study the weight structure on the triangulated category of Artin-Tate motives over a perfect base field k, building on results of Bondarko's. We then study the t-structure on the triangulated category of Artin-Tate motives, when k is algebraic over the rationals, generalizing a result of Levine's. We finally study the interaction of the weight structure and the t-structure. When k is a number field, this will give a useful criterion identifying the weight structure via realizations.
In this short note, we show that there exist one dimensional families of cubic fourfolds with Chow motive of abelian type and finite dimensional inside every Hassett divisor of special cubic fourfolds. This also implies abelianity and finite dimensionality of the motive of related Hyperkähler varieties, such as the Fano variety of lines and the LLSvS 8fold.
This small note contains some easy examples of quartic hypersurfaces that have finite-dimensional motive. As an illustration, we verify a conjecture of Voevodsky (concerning smash-equivalence) for some of these special quartics.
In this note, we sketch an approach to the problems of equivariant birational geometry developed by M. Kontsevich and Yu. Tschinkel, where Burnside invariants were introduced. We are making explicit the role of Nori constructions in this environment.
This short note contains an example of a 4-dimensional family of K3 surfaces having finite-dimensional motive. Some consequences are presented, for instance the verification of a conjecture of Voisin (concerning 0-cycles on the self-product) for K3 surfaces in this family.
We explain why every non-trivial exact tensor functor on the triangulated category of mixed motives over a field F has zero kernel, if one assumes "all" motivic conjectures. In other words, every non-zero motive generates the whole category up to the tensor triangulated structure. Under the same assumptions, we also give a complete classification of triangulated étale motives over F with integral coefficients, up to the tensor triangulated structure, in terms of the characteristic and the orderings of F.
We introduce the categories of geometric mixed Hodge modules on algebraic varieties over a subfield $k\subset\mathbb C$, and for a prime number $p$, the categories of geometric $p$-adic mixed Hodge modules on algebraic varieties over a subfield $k\subset K\subset\mathbb C_p$ of a p-adic field $K$. We then give an Hodge realization functor on the de derived category of relative motives over $k\subset\mathbb C$, and for a prime number $p$ a $p$-adic Hodge realization functor on the derived category of relative motives over $k\subset K\subset\mathbb C_p$.
This small note presents in any dimension a family of cubics that have finite-dimensional motive (in the sense of Kimura). As an illustration, we verify a conjecture of Voevodsky for these cubics, and a conjecture of Murre for the Fano variety of lines of these cubics.
Let $C$ be an algebraic curve of genus $g \geq 2$ and $M_L$ be the moduli space of rank 2 stable vector bundles on $C$ whose determinants are isomorphic to a fixed line bundle $L$ of degree 1 on $C.$ S. del Bano studied motives of moduli spaces of rank 2 vector bundles on $C$ and computed the motive of $M_L.$ In this note, we prove that his result gives an interesting decomposition of the motive of $M_L.$ This motivic decomposition is compatible with a conjecture of M. S. Narasimhan which predicts semi-orthogonal decomposition of derived category of the moduli space.
Let X be a geometrically split, geometrically irreducible variety over a field F satisfying Rost nilpotence principle. Consider a field extension E/F and a finite field K. We provide in this note a motivic tool giving sufficient conditions for so-called outer motives of direct summands of the Chow motive of X_E with coefficients in K to be lifted to the base field. This going down result has been used S. Garibaldi, V. Petrov and N. Semenov to give a complete classification of the motivic decompositions of projective homogeneous varieties of inner type E_6 and to answer a conjecture of Rost and…
In this note we relate the notions of Lefschetz type, decomposability, and isomorphism, on Chow motives with the notions of unit type, decomposability, and isomorphism, on noncommutative motives. Examples, counter-examples, and applications are also described.
We give an elementary description of the space of formal periods of a mixed motive. This allows for a simplified reformulation of the period conjectures of Grothendieck and Kontsevich-Zagier. Furthermore, we develop a machinery which in principle allows to determine the space of formal periods for an arbitrary mixed motive explicitly.
Fix a base field F, a finite field K and consider a sequence of central simple F-algebras A_1,...,A_n. In this note we provide some results toward a classification of the indecomposable motives lying in the motivic decompositions of projective homogeneous varieties under the action of PGL(A_1)x...xPGL(A_n) with coefficients in K. We give a complete classification of those motives if n=1 and derive from it the motivic dichotomy of projective linear groups. We then provide several classification results as well as counterexamples for arbitrary n showing that the situation is less rigid. These re…
Making use of the recent theory of noncommutative motives, we prove that Schur-finiteness in the setting of Voevodsky's mixed motives is invariant under homological projective duality. As an application, we show that the mixed motives of smooth linear sections of certain (Lagrangian) Grassmannians, spinor varieties, and determinantal varieties, are Schur-finite. Finally, we upgrade our applications from Schur-finiteness to Kimura-finiteness.
In the article [GS96], Gillet and Soulé define a weight complex on the category of Voevodsky motives over a field of characteristic 0. In [Bon07], Bondarko generalizes this construction for any f-category with a bounded weight structure, as is the case for Beilinson motives (following Cisinski-Déglise ; [CD09]). The first purpose of this note is to generalize [GS96, thm. 2] in the world of Beilinson motives. This done, we will naturally be led to define the motivic Euler characteristic dual to that considered by Bondarko in [Bon10]. This fact will motivate the second line of this note : provin…
These are the extended notes of a survey talk on noncommutative motives given at the 3era Escuela de Inverno Luis Santalo - CIMPA Research School: Topics in Noncommutative Geometry, Buenos Aires, July 26 to August 6, 2010.
We prove that under some assumptions on an algebraic group $G$, indecomposable direct summands of the motive of a projective $G$-homogeneous variety with coefficients in $\mathbb{F}_p$ remain indecomposable if the ring of coefficients is any field of characteristic $p$. In particular for any projective $G$-homogeneous variety $X$, the decomposition of the motive of $X$ in a direct sum of indecomposable motives with coefficients in any finite field of characteristic $p$ corresponds to the decomposition of the motive of $X$ with coefficients in $\mathbb{F}_p$. We also construct a counterexample …
We study the motive of the moduli space of semistable Higgs bundles of coprime rank and degree on a smooth projective curve C over a field k under the assumption that C has a rational point. We show this motive is contained in the thick tensor subcategory of Voevodsky's triangulated category of motives with rational coefficients generated by the motive of C. Moreover, over a field of characteristic zero, we prove a motivic non-abelian Hodge correspondence: the integral motives of the Higgs and de Rham moduli spaces are isomorphic.
本文用纯代数的方法定义了特征为零的代数闭域上任意代数模式$X$的1-基序$Alb^{+}(X)$,$Alb^{-}(X)$,$Pic^{+}(X)$和$Pic^{-}(X)$.对于$n$维的$X$ over $\C$,Hodge实现分别是$H^{2n-1}(X)(n)$、$H_{1}(X)$、$H^{1}(X)(1)$和$H_{2n-1}(X)(1-n)$。
We associate weight complexes of (homological) motives, and hence Euler characteristics in the Grothendieck group of motives, to arithmetic varieties and Deligne-Mumford stacks; this extends the results in the paper "Descent, Motives and K-theory" in volume 478 of Crelle, where a similar result was proved for varieties over a field of characteristic zero. We use K_0-motives with rational coefficients, rather than Chow motives, because we cannot appeal to resolution of singularities, but rather must use de Jong's results. In addition, for varieties over a field we prove a general result on cont…
We prove the equivalence between the category $\mathbf{RigDM}_{et}^{eff}(K,\mathbb{Q})$ of effective motives of rigid analytic varieties over a perfect complete non-archimedean field $K$ and the category $\mathbf{RigDM}_{Frobet}^{eff}(K,\mathbb{Q})$ which is obtained by localizing the category of motives without transfers $\mathbf{RigDA}_{et}^{eff}(K,\mathbb{Q})$ over purely inseparable maps. In particular, we obtain an equivalence between $\mathbf{RigDM}_{et}^{eff}(K,\mathbb{Q})$ and $\mathbf{RigDA}_{et}^{eff}(K,\mathbb{Q})$ in the characteristic $0$ case and an equivalence between $\mathbf{D…
We study Grothedieck groups of triangulated categories using weight structures, weight complexes, and the corresponding pure (co)homological functors. We prove some general statements on $K_0$ of weighted categories and apply it to Voevodsky motives endowed with so-called Chow weight structures. We obtain certain "motivic substitutes" for smooth compactifications of smooth varieties over arbitrary perfect fields; this enables us to make certain unramified cohomology and Euler characteristic calculations that are closely related to results of T. Ekedahl and B. Kahn.
In this note we prove that Kontsevich's category NCnum of noncommutative numerical motives is equivalent to the one constructed by the authors. As a consequence, we conclude that NCnum is abelian semi-simple as conjectured by Kontsevich.
We prove several Künneth formulas in motivic homotopy categories and deduce a Verdier pairing in these categories following SGA5, which leads to the characteristic class of a constructible motive, an invariant closely related to the Euler-Poincaré characteristic. We prove an additivity property of the Verdier pairing using the language of derivators, following the approach of May and Groth-Ponto-Shulman; using such a result we show that in the presence of a Chow weight structure, the characteristic class for all constructible motives is uniquely characterized by proper covariance, additivity a…
In this mostly expository note we explain how Nori's theory of motives achieves the aim of establishing a Galois theory of periods, at least under the period conjecture. We explain and compare different notions periods, different versions of the period conjecture and view the evidence by explaining the examples of Artin motive, mixed Tate motives and 1-motives.
In this note, we prove a criteria for supersingularity when the variety has a large automorphism group and a perfect bilinear pairing. This criteria unifies and extends many known results on the supersingularity of curves and varieties and in particular, applies to a large family of Artin-Schreier curves.
In this note, we introduce the first basics on Grothendieck rings for incidence geometries as a new motivic way and tool to study synthetic geometry. In this first instance, we concentrate on generalized quadrangles and related geometries. Many questions, new properties and insights arise along the way.
We define a theory of etale motives over a noetherian scheme. This provides a system of categories of complexes of motivic sheaves with integral coefficients which is closed under the six operations of Grothendieck. The rational part of these categories coincides with the triangulated categories of Beilinson motives (and is thus strongly related to algebraic $K$-theory). We extend the rigity theorem of Suslin and Voevodsky over a general base scheme. This can be reformulated by saying that torsion etale motives essentially coincide with the usual complexes of torsion etale sheaves (at least if…
In this short note we show how results of Orlov and Toën imply that any equivalence between the derived categories of coherent sheaves on two varieties lifts to an equivalence at the level of dg-categories. This establishes the link between the noncommutative geometry practised by the school of Bondal-Orlov, and the variant developed by Kontsevich and Tabuada. As an application we recover Orlov's result that the derived category determines the Chow motive with rational coefficients up to Tate twists.
A natural place to study the Chow ring of the classifying space $BG$, for $G$ a linear algebraic group, is Voevodsky's triangulated category of motives, inside which Morel and Voevodsky, and Totaro have defined motives $M(BG)$ and $M^c(BG)$, respectively. We show that, for any group $G$ of order $p^3$ over a field of characteristic not $p$ which contains a primitive $p^2$-th root of unity, the motive $M(BG)$ is a mixed Tate motive. We also show that, for a finite group $G$ over a field of characteristic zero, $M(BG)$ is a mixed Tate motive if and only $M^c(BG)$ is a mixed Tate motive.
Let $\mathbb{k}$ be a field of characteristic $p$. We introduce a formalism of mixed sheaves with coefficients in $\mathbb{k}$ and showcase its use in representation theory. More precisely, we construct for all quasi-projective schemes $X$ over an algebraic closure of $\mathbb{F}_p$ a $\mathbb{k}$-linear triangulated category of motives on $X$. Using work of Ayoub (2007), Cisinski-Deglise (2012) and Geisser-Levine (2000), we show that this system of categories has a six functors formalism and computes higher Chow groups. Indeed, it behaves similarly to other categories of sheaves that one is u…
In this note we prove the geometrical origin of pairings of abelian schemes. According to Deligne's philosophy of motives, this means that these pairings are motivic. We make also explicit the link between pairings and linear morphisms. We give a geometrical explanation of the main properties of the Weil pairings and of the Riemann forms of line bundles. We generalize our remarks to pairings of 1-motives.
