In this article, we study the problem of finding the longest common separable pattern between several permutations. We give a polynomial-time algorithm when the number of input permutations is fixed and show that the problem is NP-hard for an arbitrary number of input permutations even if these permutations are separable. On the other hand, we show that the NP-hard problem of finding the longest common pattern between two permutations cannot be approximated better than within a ratio of $sqrt{Opt}$ (where $Opt$ is the size of an optimal solution) when taking common patterns belonging to pattern-avoiding classes of permutations.
We provide a simple injective proof that the number of 132-avoiding permutations with a unique longest increasing subsequence is at least as large as the number of 132-avoiding permutations without a unique longest increasing subsequence.
We provide upper and lower bounds for the expected length $\mathbb E(L_{n,m})$ of the longest common pattern contained in $m$ random permutations of length $n$. We also address the tightness of the concentration of $L_{n,m}$ around $\mathbb E(L_{n,m})$.
We study the longest increasing subsequence problem for random permutations avoiding the pattern $312$ and another pattern $τ$ under the uniform probability distribution. We determine the exact and asymptotic formulas for the average length of the longest increasing subsequences for such permutation classes specifically when the pattern $τ$ is monotone increasing or decreasing, or any pattern of length four.
The length is(w) of the longest increasing subsequence of a permutation w in the symmetric group S_n has been the object of much investigation. We develop comparable results for the length as(w) of the longest alternating subsequence of w, where a sequence a,b,c,d,... is alternating if a>b<c>d<.... For instance, the expected value (mean) of as(w) for w in S_n is exactly (4n+1)/6 if n>1.
In this paper, we give a polynomial (O(n^8)) algorithm for finding a longest common pattern between two permutations of size n given that one is separable. We also give an algorithm for general permutations whose complexity depends on the length of the longest simple permutation involved in one of our permutations.
Inspired by the results of Baik, Deift and Johansson on the limiting distribution of the lengths of the longest increasing subsequences in random permutations, we find those limiting distributions for pattern-restricted permutations in which the pattern is any one of the six patterns of length 3. We show that the (132)-avoiding case is identical to the distribution of heights of ordered trees, and that the (321)-avoiding case has interesting connections with a well known theorem of Erd\H os-Szekeres.
A classical bijection relates certain Kostka numbers, the Catalan numbers, and permutations of length $n$ with longest increasing subsequence (LIS) of length at most $2.$ We generalize this bijection and find Kostka numbers which count the number of permutations of $n$ with LIS length at most $w,$ the number of permutations with $(1, \cdots, w)$ as a LIS, and other similar subsets of permutations.
We consider the distribution of the length of the longest subsequence avoiding a given pattern in a random permutation of length n. The well-studied case of a longest increasing subsequence corresponds to avoiding the pattern 21. We show that there is some constant c such that the mean value of this length is asymptotic to twice the square root of c times n and that the distribution of the length is tightly concentrated around its mean. We observe some apparent connections between c and the Stanley-Wilf limit of the class of permutations avoiding the given pattern.
We prove a formula for the number of permutations in $S_n$ such that their first $n-k$ entries are increasing and their longest increasing subsequence has length $n-k$. This formula first appeared as a consequence of character polynomial calculations in recent work of Adriano Garsia and Alain Goupil. We give two `elementary' bijective proofs of this result and of its $q$-analogue, one proof using the RSK correspondence and one only permutations.
We compute the limit distribution for (centered and scaled) length of the longest increasing subsequence of random colored permutations. The limit distribution function is a power of that for usual random permutations computed recently by Baik, Deift, and Johansson (math.CO/9810105). In two--colored case our method provides a different proof of a similar result by Tracy and Widom about longest increasing subsequences of signed permutations (math.CO/9811154). Our main idea is to reduce the `colored' problem to the case of usual random permutations using certain combinatorial results and element…
The Mallows measure is a probability measure on $S_n$ where the probability of a permutation $π$ is proportional to $q^{l(π)}$ with $q > 0$ being a parameter and $l(π)$ the number of inversions in $π$. We prove a weak law of large numbers for the length of the longest common subsequences of two independent permutations drawn from the Mallows measure, when $q$ is a function of $n$ and $n(1-q)$ has limit in $\mathbb{R}$ as $n \to \infty$.
The sequence a_1,...,a_m is a common subsequence in the set of permutations S = {p_1,...,p_k} on [n] if it is a subsequence of p_i(1),...,p_i(n) and p_j(1),...,p_j(n) for some distinct p_i, p_j in S. Recently, Beame and Huynh-Ngoc (2008) showed that when k>=3, every set of k permutations on [n] has a common subsequence of length at least n^{1/3}. We show that, surprisingly, this lower bound is asymptotically optimal for all constant values of k. Specifically, we show that for any k>=3 and n>=k^2 there exists a set of k permutations on [n] in which the longest common subsequence has length at m…
The Mallows measure is measure on permutations which was introduced by Mallows in connection with ranking problems in statistics. Under this measure, the probability of a permutation $π$ is proportional to $q^{Inv(π)}$ where $q$ is a positive parameter and $Inv(π)$ is the number of inversions in $π$. We consider the length of the longest common subsequence (LCS) of two independently permutations drawn according to $μ_{n,q}$ and $μ_{n,q'}$ for some $q,q' >0$. We show that when $0<q,q'<1$, the limiting law of the LCS is Gaussian. In the regime that $n(1-q) \to \infty$ and $n(1-q') \to \infty$ we…
Recently Richard Stanley initiated a study of the distribution of the length as(w) of the longest alternating subsequence in a random permutation w from the symmetric group $S_n$. Among other things he found an explicit formula for the generating function (on n and k) for the probability that as(w) is at most k and conjectured that the distribution, suitably centered and normalized, tended to a Gaussian with variance 8/45. In this note we present a proof of the conjecture based on the generating function.
Introduced by Mallows in statistical ranking theory, Mallows permutation model is a class of non-uniform probability measures on the symmetric group $S_n$ that depend on a distance metric $d(σ,τ)$ on $S_n$ and a scale parameter $β$. Taking the distance metric to be the $L^1$ and $L^2$ distances--which are respectively known as Spearman's footrule and Spearman's rank correlation in the statistics literature--leads to Mallows permutation models with $L^1$ and $L^2$ distances. In this paper, we study the length of the longest increasing subsequence of random permutations drawn from Mallows permut…
A permutation class is splittable if it is contained in the merge of two of its proper subclasses. We characterise the unsplittable subclasses of the class of separable permutations both structurally and in terms of their bases.
Let $P_{n,k}$ be the number of permutations $π$ on [n]={1, 2,..., n} such that the length of the longest increasing subsequences of $π$ equals k, and let $M_{2n, k}$ be the number of matchings on [2n] with crossing number k. Define $P_n(x)= \sum_k P_{n,k}x^k$ and $M_{2n}(x)=\sum_{k} M_{2n,k}x^k$. We propose some conjectures on the log-concavity and q-log-convexity of the polynomials $P_n(x)$ and $M_{2n}(x)$. We also introduce the notions of $\infty$-q-log-convexity and $\infty$-q-log-concavity, and the notion of higher order log-concavity with respect to $\infty$-q-log-convex or $\infty$-q-log…
When two patterns occur equally often in a set of permutations, we say that these patterns are equipopular. Using both structural and analytic tools, we classify the equipopular patterns in the set of separable permutations. In particular, we show that the number of equipopularity classes for length $n$ patterns in the separable permutations is equal to the number of partitions of $n-1$.
We consider the distributions of the lengths of the longest monotone and alternating subsequences in classes of permutations of size $n$ that avoid a specific pattern or set of patterns, with respect to the uniform distribution on each such class. We obtain exact results for any class that avoids two patterns of length 3, as well as results for some classes that avoid one pattern of length 4 or more. In our results, the longest monotone subsequences have expected length proportional to $n$ for pattern-avoiding classes, in contrast with the $\sqrt n$ behaviour that holds for unrestricted permut…
We prove that all subclasses of the separable permutations not containing Av(231) or a symmetry of this class have rational generating functions. Our principal tools are partial well-order, atomicity, and the theory of strongly rational permutation classes introduced here for the first time.
Connections between longest increasing subsequences in random permutations and eigenvalues of random matrices with complex entries have been intensely studied. This note applies properties of random elements of the finite general linear group to obtain results about the longest increasing subsequence in non- uniform random permutations.
Every word has a shape determined by its image under the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence. We show that when a word w contains a separable (i.e., 3142- and 2413-avoiding) permutation σ as a pattern, the shape of w contains the shape of σ. As an application, we exhibit lower bounds for the lengths of supersequences of sets containing separable permutations.
We characterize separable multidimensional permutations in terms of forbidden patterns and enumerate them by means of generating function, recursive formula and explicit formula. We find a connection between multidimensional permutations and guillotine partitions of a box. In particular, a bijection between $d$-dimensional permutations and guillotine partitions of a $2^{d-1}$-dimensional box is constructed. We also study enumerating problems related to guillotine partitions under certain restrictions revealing connections to other combinatorial structures. This allows us to obtain results on a…
Let $π$ be a permutation of $[n]=\{1,\dots,n\}$ and denote by $\ell(π)$ the length of a longest increasing subsequence of $π$. Let $\ell_{n,k}$ be the number of permutations $π$ of $[n]$ with $\ell(π)=k$. Chen conjectured that the sequence $\ell_{n,1},\ell_{n,2},\dots,\ell_{n,n}$ is log concave for every fixed positive integer $n$. We conjecture that the same is true if one is restricted to considering involutions and we show that these two conjectures are closely related. We also prove various analogues of these conjectures concerning permutations whose output tableaux under the Robinson-Sche…
We study random uniform permutations in an important class of pattern-avoiding permutations: the separable permutations. We describe the asymptotics of the number of occurrences of any fixed given pattern in such a random permutation in terms of the Brownian excursion. In the recent terminology of permutons, our work can be interpreted as the convergence of uniform random separable permutations towards a "Brownian separable permuton".
We study the length of the longest increasing and longest decreasing subsequences of random permutations drawn from the Mallows measure. Under this measure, the probability of a permutation pi in S_n is proportional to q^{inv(pi)} where q is a real parameter and inv(pi) is the number of inversions in pi. The case q=1 corresponds to uniformly random permutations. The Mallows measure was introduced by Mallows in connection with ranking problems in statistics. We determine the typical order of magnitude of the lengths of the longest increasing and decreasing subsequences, as well as large deviati…
We give a recursive formula for the Moebius function of an interval $[σ,π]$ in the poset of permutations ordered by pattern containment in the case where $π$ is a decomposable permutation, that is, consists of two blocks where the first one contains all the letters 1, 2, ..., k for some k. This leads to many special cases of more explicit formulas. It also gives rise to a computationally efficient formula for the Moebius function in the case where $σ$ and $π$ are separable permutations. A permutation is separable if it can be generated from the permutation 1 by successive sums and skew sums or…
The authors consider the length, $l_N$, of the length of the longest increasing subsequence of a random permutation of $N$ numbers. The main result in this paper is a proof that the distribution function for $l_N$, suitably centered and scaled, converges to the Tracy-Widom distribution [TW1] of the largest eigenvalue of a random GUE matrix. The authors also prove convergence of moments. The proof is based on the steepest decent method for Riemann-Hilbert problems, introduced by Deift and Zhou in 1993 [DZ1] in the context of integrable systems. The applicability of the Riemann-Hilbert technique…
In this paper we consider the rank generating function of a separable permutation $π$ in the weak Bruhat order on the two intervals $[\text{id}, π]$ and $[π, w_0]$, where $w_0 = n,(n-1),..., 1$. We show a surprising result that the product of these two generating functions is the generating function for the symmetric group with the weak order. We then obtain explicit formulas for the rank generating functions on $[\text{id}, π]$ and $[π, w_0]$, which leads to the rank-symmetry and unimodality of the two graded posets.
Tutte founded the theory of enumeration of planar maps in a series of papers in the 1960s. Rooted non-separable planar maps are in bijection with West-2-stack-sortable permutations, beta(1,0)-trees introduced by Cori, Jacquard and Schaeffer in 1997, as well as a family of permutations defined by the avoidance of two four letter patterns. In this paper we give upper and lower bounds on the number of multiple-edge-free rooted non-separable planar maps. We also use the bijection between rooted non-separable planar maps and a certain class of permutations, found by Claesson, Kitaev and Steingrimss…
Let $LA_{n}(τ)$ be the length of the longest alternating subsequence of a uniform random permutation $τ\in[n]$. Classical probabilistic arguments are used to rederive the asymptotic mean, variance and limiting law of $LA_{n}(τ)$. Our methodology is robust enough to tackle similar problems for finite alphabet random words or even Markovian sequences in which case our results are mainly original. A sketch of how some cases of pattern restricted permutations can also be tackled with probabilistic methods is finally presented.
This paper is interested in independent sets (or equivalently, cliques) in uniform random cographs. We also study their permutation analogs, namely, increasing subsequences in uniform random separable permutations. First, we prove that, with high probability as $n$ gets large, the largest independent set in a uniform random cograph with $n$ vertices has size $o(n)$. This answers a question of Kang, McDiarmid, Reed and Scott. Using the connection between graphs and permutations via inversion graphs, we also give a similar result for the longest increasing subsequence in separable permutations. …
We study the shape of the Young diagram λassociated via the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm to a random permutation in S_n such that the length of the longest decreasing subsequence is not bigger than a fixed number d; in other words we study the restriction of the Plancherel measure to Young diagrams with at most d rows. We prove that in the limit n\to\infty the rows of λbehave like the eigenvalues of a certain random matrix (traceless Gaussian Unitary Ensemble) with d rows and columns. In particular, the length of the longest increasing subsequence of such a random permutation behaves asy…
We investigate the connections between patterns in permutations and forbidden configurations in restricted elections, first discovered by Lackner and Lackner, in order to enhance the approach initiated by the two mentioned authors. More specifically, our achievements are essentially two. First, we define a new type of domain restriction, called enriched group-separable. Enriched group-separable elections are a subset of group-separable elections, which describe a special, still natural, situation that can arise in the context of group-separability. The exact enumeration of group-separable elec…

Let $P_n^{\text{sep}}$ denote the uniform probability measure on the set of separable permutations in $S_n$. Let $\mathbb{N}^*=\mathbb{N}\cup\{\infty\}$ with an appropriate metric and denote by $S(\mathbb{N},\mathbb{N}^*)$ the compact metric space consisting of functions $σ=\{σ_i\}_{ i=1}^\infty$ from $\mathbb{N}$ to $\mathbb{N}^*$ which are injections when restricted to $σ^{-1}(\mathbb{N})$\rm; that is, if $σ_i=σ_j$, $i\neq j$, then $σ_i=\infty$. Extending permutations $σ\in S_n$ by defining $σ_j=j$, for $j>n$, we have $S_n\subset S(\mathbb{N},\mathbb{N}^*)$. We show that $\{P_n^{\text{sep}}\…
Let $S_n$ denote the set of permutations of $[n]:=\{1,\cdots, n\}$, and denote a permutation $σ\in S_n$ by $σ=σ_1σ_2\cdots σ_n$. For $l\ge2$ an integer, let $A^{(n)}_{l;k}\subset S_n$ denote the event that the set of $l$ consecutive numbers $\{k, k+1,\cdots, k+l-1\}$ appears in a set of consecutive positions: $\{k,k+1,\cdots, k+l-1\}=\{σ_a,σ_{a+1},\cdots, σ_{a+l-1}\}$, for some $a$. For $τ\in S_m$, let $S_n(τ)$ denote the set of $τ$-avoiding permutations in $S_n$, and let $P_n^{\text{av}(τ)}$ denote the uniform probability measure on $S_n(τ)$. Also, let $S_n^{\text{sep}}$ denote the set of sep…
This paper is concerned with certain connections between the ensemble of n x n unitary matrices -- specifically the characteristic function of the random variable tr(U) -- and combinatorics -- specifically Ulam's problem concerning the distribution of the length of the longest increasing subsequence in permutation groups -- and the appearance of Painleve functions in the answers to apparently unrelated questions. Among the results is a representation in terms of a Painleve V function for the characteristic function of tr(U) and (using recent results of Baik, Deift and Johansson) an expression …
Let $\lpt(G)$ be the minimum cardinality of a set of vertices that intersects all longest paths in a graph $G$. Let $ω(G)$ be the size of a maximum clique in $G$, and $\tw(G)$ be the treewidth of $G$. We prove that $ \lpt(G) \leq \max\{1,ω(G)-2\}$ when $G$ is a connected chordal graph; that $\lpt(G) =1$ when $G$ is a connected bipartite permutation graph or a connected full substar graph; and that $\lpt(G) \leq \tw(G)$ for any connected graph $G$.
