We consider an admissible Riemannian polyhedron with piece-wise smooth boundary. The associated Laplace defines the boundary spectral data as the set of eigenvalues and restrictions to the boundary of the corresponding eigenfunctions. In this paper we prove that the boundary spectral data prescribed on an open subset of the polyhedron boundary determine the admissible Riemannian polyhedron uniquely.
We consider the unique determinations of impenetrable obstacles or diffraction grating profiles in $\mathbb{R}^3$ by a single far-field measurement within polyhedral geometries. We are particularly interested in the case that the scattering objects are of impedance type. We derive two new unique identifiability results for the inverse scattering problem in the aforementioned two challenging setups. The main technical idea is to exploit certain quantitative geometric properties of the Laplacian eigenfunctions which were initiated in our recent works [8,9]. In this paper, we derive novel geometr…
We study an inverse boundary value problem for the Helmholtz equation using the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map as the data. We consider piecewise constant wavespeeds on an unknown tetrahedral partition and prove a Lipschitz stability estimate in terms of the Hausdorff distance between partitions.
We consider the inverse problem of recovering the magnetic and potential term of a magnetic Schrödinger operator on certain compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary from partial Dirichlet and Neumann data on suitable subsets of the boundary. The uniqueness proof relies on proving a suitable Carleman estimate for functions which vanish only on a part of boundary and constructing complex geometric optics solutions which vanish on a part of the boundary.
This paper is concerned with an inverse source problem for the three-dimensional Helmholtz equation by a single boundary measurement at a fixed frequency. We show the Lipschitz stability under the assumption that the source function is piecewise constant on a domain which is made of a union of disjoint convex polyhedral subdomains..
In this paper we consider determining a minimal surface embedded in a Riemannian manifold $Σ\times \mathbb{R}$. We show that if $Σ$ is a two dimensional Riemannian manifold with boundary, then the knowledge of the associated Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the minimal surface equation determine $Σ$ up to an isometry.
We consider a fixed angle inverse scattering problem in the presence of a known Riemannian metric. First, assuming a no caustics condition, we study the direct problem by utilizing the progressing wave expansion. Under a symmetry assumption on the metric, we obtain uniqueness and stability results in the inverse scattering problem for a potential with data generated by two incident waves from opposite directions. Further, similar results are given using one measurement provided the potential also satisfies a symmetry assumption. This work extends the results of [23,24] from the Euclidean case …
We consider the inverse problem to determine a smooth compact Riemannian manifold with boundary $(M, g)$ from a restriction $Λ_{\Src, \Rec}$ of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator for the wave equation on the manifold. Here $\Src$ and $\Rec$ are open sets in $\p M$ and the restriction $Λ_{\Src, \Rec}$ corresponds to the case where the Dirichlet data is supported on $\R_+\times \Src$ and the Neumann data is measured on $\R_+\times \Rec$. In the novel case where $\bar \Src \cap \bar \Rec = \emptyset$, we show that $Λ_{\Src, \Rec}$ determines the manifold $(M,g)$ uniquely, assuming that the wave eq…
Consider a real-analytic orientable connected complete Riemannian manifold $M$ with boundary of dimension $n\ge 2$ and let $k$ be an integer $1\le k\le n$. In the case when $M$ is compact of dimension $n\ge 3$, we show that the manifold and the metric on it can be reconstructed, up to an isometry, from the set of the Cauchy data for harmonic $k$-forms, given on an open subset of the boundary. This extends a result of [13] when $k=0$. In the two-dimensional case, the same conclusion is obtained when considering the set of the Cauchy data for harmonic $1$-forms. Under additional assumptions on t…
This paper deals with an inverse problem for a non-self-adjoint Schrödinger equation on a compact Riemannian manifold. Our goal is to stably determine a real vector field from the dynamical Dirichlet-to Neumann map. We establish in dimension n greater than 2, an Hölder type stability estimate for the inverse problem under study. The proof is mainly based on the reduction to an equivalent problem for an electro-magnetic Schrödinger equation and the use of a Carleman estimate designed for elliptic operators.
The long-time existence and umbilicity estimates for compact, graphical solutions to expanding curvature flows are deduced in Riemannian warped products of a real interval with a compact fibre. Notably we do not assume the ambient manifold to be rotationally symmetric, nor the radial curvature to converge, nor a lower bound on the ambient sectional curvature. The inverse speeds are given by powers $p\leq 1$ of a curvature function satisfying few common properties.
We study an inverse problem for a non-compact Riemannian manifold whose ends have the following properties : On each end, the Riemannian metric is assumed to be a short-range perturbation of the metric of the form $(dy)^2 + h(x,dx)$, $h(x,dx)$ being the metric of some compact manifold of codimension 1. Moreover one end is exactly cylindrical, i.e. the metric is equal to $(dy)^2 + h(x,dx)$. Given two such manifolds having the same scattering matrix on that exactly cylindrical end for all energy, we show that these two manifolds are isometric.
Given a compact manifold with boundary with unknown Riemannian metric. The problem is to reconstruct the metric in a class of conformal metrics from knowledge of lengths of all closed geodesics (kinematic data). An integral inequality is stated which implies uniqueness and stability for this problem. If the conformal class is not known a unique reconstruction is not possible since of shortage of information. It is proved that the list of all geodesic lengths is sufficient for unique determination of a Riemannian metric in a compact surface with boundary up to an automorphism which fix the boun…
In this paper we consider the inverse problem of determining on a compact Riemannian manifold the electric potential and the absorption coefficient in the wave equation with Dirichlet data from measured Neumann boundary observations. This information is enclosed in the dynamical Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated to the wave equation. We prove in dimension $n \geq 2$ that the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the wave equation uni

In this paper, we consider the inverse boundary problems of recovering the time-dependent nonlinearity and damping term for a semilinear wave equation on a Riemannian manifold. The Carleman estimate and the construction of Gaussian beams together with the higher order linearization are respectively used to derive the uniqueness results of recovering the coefficients.
We consider an inverse problem associated with $n$-dimensional asymptotically hyperbolic orbifolds $(n \geq 2)$ having a finite number of cusps and regular ends. By observing solutions of the Helmholtz equation at the cusp, we introduce a generalized $S$-matrix, and then show that it determines the manifolds with its Riemannian metric and the orbifold structure.
Given a connected compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ without boundary, $\dim M\ge 2$, we consider a space--time fractional diffusion equation with an interior source that is supported on an open subset $V$ of the manifold. The time-fractional part of the equation is given by the Caputo derivative of order $α\in(0,1]$, and the space fractional part by $(-Δ_g)^β$, where $β\in(0,1]$ and $Δ_g$ is the Laplace--Beltrami operator on the manifold. The case $α=β=1$, which corresponds to the standard heat equation on the manifold, is an important special case. We construct a specific source such that m…
We consider stability and approximate reconstruction of Riemannian manifold when the finite number of eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator and the boundary values of the corresponding eigenfunctions are given. The reconstruction can be done in stable way when manifold is a priori known to satisfy natural geometrical conditions related to curvature and other invariant quantities.
We summarize the proofs for the s-injectivity of the tensor tomography problem on compact Riemannian manifolds with boundaries in [Dairbekov, Inverse Problems, 22: 431, 2006] and [Paternain-Salo-Uhlmann, Math. Ann., 363: 305-362, 2015] under certain geometric assumptions.
We study inverse boundary problems for first order perturbations of the biharmonic operator on a conformally transversally anisotropic Riemannian manifold of dimension $n \ge 3$. We show that a continuous first order perturbation can be determined uniquely from the knowledge of the set of the Cauchy data on the boundary of the manifold provided that the geodesic $X$-ray transform on the transversal manifold is injective.
In this paper, we study the amount of information contained in the Steklov spectrum of some compact manifolds with connected boundary equipped with a warped product metric. Examples of such manifolds can be thought of as deformed balls in R^d. We first prove that the Steklov spectrum determines uniquely the warping function of the metric. We show in fact that the approximate knowledge (in a given precise sense) of the Steklov spectrum is enough to determine uniquely the warping function in a neighbourhood of the boundary. Second, we provide stability estimates of log-type on the warping functi…
We establish results for the injectivity and injectivity modulo gauge of certain inverse source problems in transport on a simply connected domain with variable index of refraction inducing a 'simple geometry'. The model given by radiative transfer involves a scattering kernel with finite harmonic content in the deviation angle. The results on injectivity are constructive, and they are connected to the explicit inversion (modulo kernel) of the attenuated X-ray transform on tensor fields on simple Riemannian surfaces.
We consider a smooth Riemannian metric tensor $g$ on $\R^n$ and study the stochastic wave equation for the Laplace-Beltrami operator $\p_t^2 u - Δ_g u = F$. Here, $F=F(t,x,ω)$ is a random source that has white noise distribution supported on the boundary of some smooth compact domain $M \subset \R^n$. We study the following formally posed inverse problem with only one measurement. Suppose that $g$ is known only outside of a compact subset of $M^{int}$ and that a solution $u(t,x,ω_0)$ is produced by a single realization of the source $F(t,x,ω_0)$. We ask what information regarding $g$ can be re…
We consider an inverse problem for a hyperbolic partial differential equation on a compact Riemannian manifold. Assuming that $Γ_1$ and $Γ_2$ are two disjoint open subsets of the boundary of the manifold we define the restricted Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator $Λ_{Γ_1,Γ_2}$. This operator corresponds the boundary measurements when we have smooth sources supported on $Γ_1$ and the fields produced by these sources are observed on $Γ_2$. We show that when $Γ_1$ and $Γ_2$ are disjoint but their closures intersect at least at one point, then the restricted Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator $Λ_{Γ_1,Γ_2}$ …
Assume that $M$ is a compact Riemannian manifold of bounded geometry given by restrictions on its diameter, Ricci curvature and injectivity radius. Assume we are given, with some error, the first eigenvalues of the Laplacian $Δ_g$ on $M$ as well as the corresponding eigenfunctions restricted on an open set in $M$. We then construct a stable approximation to the manifold $(M,g)$. Namely, we construct a metric space and a Riemannian manifold which differ, in a proper sense, just a little from $M$ when the above data are given with a small error. We give an explicit $\log\log$-type stability esti…
We study inverse boundary problems for magnetic Schrödinger operators on a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary of dimension $\ge 3$. In the first part of the paper we are concerned with the case of admissible geometries, i.e. compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary which are conformally embedded in a product of the Euclidean line and a simple manifold. We show that the knowledge of the Cauchy data on the boundary of the manifold for the magnetic Schrödinger operator with $L^\infty$ magnetic and electric potentials, determines the magnetic field and electric potential uniquely. In the …
Let $(N,g)$ be a Riemannian manifold with the distance function $d(x,y)$ and an open subset $M\subset N$. For $x\in M$ we denote by $D_x$ the distance difference function $D_x:F\times F\to \mathbb R$, given by $D_x(z_1,z_2)=d(x,z_1)-d(x,z_2)$, $z_1,z_2\in F=N\setminus M$. We consider the inverse problem of determining the topological and the differentiable structure of the manifold $M$ and the metric $g|_M$ on it when we are given the distance difference data, that is, the set $F$, the metric $g|_F$, and the collection $\mathcal D(M)=\{D_x;\ x\in M\}$. Moreover, we consider the embedded image …
We survey recent results on inverse problems for geodesic X-ray transforms and other linear and non-linear geometric inverse problems for Riemannian metrics, connections and Higgs fields defined on manifolds with boundary.
Let $(M,g)$ be a smooth compact orientable two-dimensional Riemannian manifold ({\it surface}) with a smooth metric tensor $g$ and smooth connected boundary $Γ$. Its {\it DN-map} $Λ_g:{C^\infty}(Γ)\to{C^\infty}(Γ)$ is associated with the (forward) elliptic problem $ Δ_gu=0 \,\,\, {\rm in}\,\,M\setminusΓ,\,\,u=f \,\,\, {\rm on}\,\,\,Γ$, and acts by $ Λ_g f:=\partial_νu^f \,\,\, {\rm on}\,\,\,Γ, $ where $Δ_g$ is the Beltrami-Laplace operator, $u=u^f(x)$ is the solution, $ν$ is the outward normal to $Γ$. The corresponding {\it inverse problem} is to determine the surface $(M,g)$ from its DN-map $…
We consider the dynamical inverse problem for the Maxwell system on a Riemannian 3-manifold with boundary in a time-optimal set-up. Using BC-method we show that the data of the inverse problem (electromagnetic measurements on the boundary) determine a $C$*-algebra, which has a spectrum homeomorphic to a part of the manifold. This part depends on the duration of measurements.
We reconstruct a Riemannian manifold and a Hermitian vector bundle with compatible connection from the hyperbolic Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator associated with the wave equation of the connection Laplacian. The boundary data is local and the reconstruction is up to the natural gauge transformations of the problem. As a corollary we derive an elliptic analogue of the main result which solves a Calderon problem for connections on a cylinder.
Consider a fractional operator $P^s$, $0<s<1$, for connection Laplacian $P:=\nabla^*\nabla+A$ on a smooth Hermitian vector bundle over a closed, connected Riemannian manifold of dimension $n\geq 2$. We show that local knowledge of the metric, Hermitian bundle, connection, potential, and source-to-solution map associated with $P^s$ determines these structures globally. This extends a result known for the fractional Laplace-Beltrami operator.

We give a new and self-contained proof of a generic version of the (former) Helgason conjecture. It says that for generic spectral parameters the Poisson transform is a topological isomorphism, with the inverse given by a boundary value map. Following Oshima's approach to a simplified definition of boundary values, and using the earlier work of Baouendi and Goulaouic on Fuchsian type equations, our proof is along the lines of our earlier work in the rank one distributional case, and works for both the hyperfunction and the distribution setting.
This PhD dissertation is concerned with integral geometric inverse problems. The geodesic ray transform is an operator that encodes the line integrals of a function along geodesics. The dissertation establishes many conditions when such information determines a function uniquely and stably. A new numerical model for computed tomography imaging is created as a part of the dissertation. The introductory part of the dissertation contains an introduction to inverse problems and mathematical models associated to computed tomography. The main focus is in definitions of integral geometry problems, su…
