We introduce new sufficient conditions for intrinsic knotting and linking. A graph on n vertices with at least 4n-9 edges is intrinsically linked. A graph on n vertices with at least 5n-14 edges is intrinsically knotted. We also classify graphs that are 0, 1, or 2 edges short of being complete partite graphs with respect to intrinsic linking and intrinsic knotting. In addition, we classify intrinsic knotting of graphs on 8 vertices.
This paper focuses on the graphs in the Petersen family, the set of minor minimal intrinsically linked graphs. We prove there is a relationship between algebraic linking of an embedding and knotting in an embedding. We also present a more explicit relationship for the graph $K_{3,3,1}$ between knotting and linking, which relates the sum of the squares of linking numbers of links in the embedding and the second coefficient of the Conway polynomial of particular cycles in the embedding.
We classify graphs that are 0, 1, or 2 edges short of being complete partite graphs with respect to intrinsic linking and intrinsic knotting. In addition, we classify intrinsic knotting of graphs on 8 vertices. For graphs in these families, we verify a conjecture presented in Adams' "The Knot Book": If a vertex is removed from an intrinsically knotted graph, one obtains an intrinsically linked graph.
We show that for every m in N, there exists an n in N such that every embedding of the complete graph K_n in R^3 contains a link of two components whose linking number is at least m. Furthermore, there exists an r in N such that every embedding of K_r in R^3 contains a knot Q with |a_2(Q)| > m-1, where a_2(Q) denotes the second coefficient of the Conway polynomial of Q.
Fleming and Foisy recently proved the existence of a digraph whose every embedding contains a $4$-component link, and left open the possibility that a directed graph with an intrinsic $n$-component link might exist. We show that, indeed, this is the case. In fact, much as Flapan, Mellor, and Naimi show for graphs, knotting and linking are arbitrarily complex in directed graphs. Specifically, we prove the analog for digraphs of the main theorem of their paper: for any $n$ and $α$, every embedding of a sufficiently large complete digraph in $\mathbb{R}^3$ contains an oriented link with component…
We introduce a notion of intrinsic linking and knotting for virtual spatial graphs. Our theory gives two filtrations of the set of all graphs, allowing us to measure, in a sense, how intrinsically linked or knotted a graph is; we show that these filtrations are descending and non-terminating. We also provide several examples of intrinsically virtually linked and knotted graphs. As a byproduct, we introduce the {\it virtual unknotting number} of a knot, and show that any knot with non-trivial Jones polynomial has virtual unknotting number at least 2.
We prove that a graph is intrinsically linked in an arbitrary 3-manifold M if and only if it is intrinsically linked in S^3. Also, assuming the Poincare Conjecture, we prove that a graph is intrinsically knotted in M if and only if it is intrinsically knotted in S^3.
A directed graph $G$ is $\textit{intrinsically linked}$ if every embedding of that graph contains a non-split link $L$, where each component of $L$ is a consistently oriented cycle in $G$. A $\textit{tournament}$ is a directed graph where each pair of vertices is connected by exactly one directed edge. We consider intrinsic linking and knotting in tournaments, and study the minimum number of vertices required for a tournament to have various intrinsic linking or knotting properties. We produce the following bounds: intrinsically linked ($n=8$), intrinsically knotted ($9 \leq n \leq 12$), intri…
We show that, given any $n$ and $α$, every embedding of any sufficiently large complete graph in $\mathbb{R}^3$ contains an oriented link with components $Q_1$, ..., $Q_n$ such that for every $i\not =j$, $|\lk(Q_i,Q_j)|\geqα$ and $|a_2(Q_i)|\geqα$, where $a_{2}(Q_i)$ denotes the second coefficient of the Conway polynomial of $Q_i$.
We present evidence in support of a conjecture that a bipartite graph with at least five vertices in each part and |E(G)| \geq 4 |V(G)| - 17 is intrinsically knotted. We prove the conjecture for graphs that have exactly five or exactly six vertices in one part. We also show that there is a constant C_n such that a bipartite graph with exactly n \geq 5 vertices in one part and |E(G)| \geq 4 |V(G)| + C_n is intrinsically knotted. Finally, we classify bipartite graphs with ten or fewer vertices with respect to intrinsic knotting.
In 1983, Conway and Gordon proved that for every spatial complete graph on six vertices, the sum of the linking numbers over all of the constituent two-component links is odd, and that for every spatial complete graph on seven vertices, the sum of the Arf invariants over all of the Hamiltonian knots is odd. In 2009, the second author gave integral lifts of the Conway-Gordon theorems in terms of the square of the linking number and the second coefficient of the Conway polynomial. In this paper, we generalize the integral Conway-Gordon theorems to complete graphs with arbitrary number of vertice…
Given a (genus 2) cube-with-holes M, i.e. the complement in S^3 of a handlebody H, we relate intrinsic properties of M (like its cut number) with extrinsic features depending on the way the handlebody H is knotted in S^3. Starting from a first level of knotting that requires the non-existence of a planar spine for H, we define several instances of knotting of H in terms of the non-existence of spines with special properties. Some of these instances are implied by an intrinsic counterpart in terms of the non-existence of special cut-systems for M. We study a natural partial order on these insta…
We present four models for a random graph and show that, in each case, the probability that a graph is intrinsically knotted goes to one as the number of vertices increases. We also argue that, for $k \geq 18$, most graphs of order $k$ are intrinsically knotted and, for $k \geq 2n+9$, most of order $k$ are not $n$-apex. We observe that $p(n) = 1/n$ is the threshold for intrinsic knotting and linking in Gilbert's model.
Conway and Gordon proved that for every spatial complete graph on six vertices, the sum of the linking numbers over all of the constituent two-component links is odd, and Kazakov and Korablev proved that for every spatial complete graph with arbitrary number of vertices greater than six, the sum of the linking numbers over all of the constituent two-component Hamiltonian links is even. In this paper, we show that for every spatial complete graph whose number of vertices is greater than six, the sum of the square of the linking numbers over all of the two-component Hamiltonian links is determin…
We study intrinsically linked graphs where we require that every embedding of the graph contains not just a non-split link, but a link that satisfies some additional property. Examples of properties we address in this paper are: a two component link with lk(A,L) = k2^r, k not 0, a non-split n-component link where all linking numbers are even, or an n-component link with components L, A_i where lk(L,A_i) = 3k, k not 0. Links with other properties are considered as well. For a given property, we prove that every embedding of a certain complete graph contains a link with that property. The size o…
Let $n$, $q$ and $r$ be positive integers, and let $K_N^n$ be the $n$-skeleton of an $(N-1)$-simplex. We show that for $N$ sufficiently large every embedding of $K_N^n$ in $\mathbb{R}^{2n+1}$ contains a link $L_1\cup\cdots\cup L_r$ consisting of $r$ disjoint $n$-spheres, such that the linking number $link(L_i,L_j)$ is a nonzero multiple of $q$ for all $i\neq j$. This result is new in the classical case $n=1$ (graphs embedded in $\mathbb{R}^3$) as well as the higher dimensional cases $n\geq 2$; and since it implies the existence of a link $L_1\cup\cdots\cup L_r$ such that $|link(L_i,L_j)|\geq q…
Define the complete n-complex on N vertices to be the n-skeleton of an (N-1)-simplex. We show that embeddings of sufficiently large complete n-complexes in R^{2n+1} necessarily exhibit complicated linking behaviour, thereby extending known results on embeddings of large complete graphs in R^3 (the case n=1) to higher dimensions. In particular, we prove the existence of links of the following types: r-component links, with the linking pattern of a chain, necklace or keyring; 2-component links with linking number at least lambda in absolute value; and 2-component links with linking number a non-…
We consider intrinsic linking and knotting in the context of directed graphs. We construct an example of a directed graph that contains a consistently oriented knotted cycle in every embedding. We also construct examples of intrinsically 3-linked and 4-linked directed graphs. We introduce two operations, consistent edge contraction and H-cyclic subcontraction, as special cases of minors for digraphs, and show that the property of having a linkless embedding is closed under these operations. We analyze the relationship between the number of distinct knots and links in an undirected graph $G$ an…
We present a short exposition of the following results by S. Parsa. Let $L$ be a graph such that the join $L*\{1,2,3\}$ (i.e. the union of three cones over $L$ along their common bases) piecewise linearly (PL) embeds into $\mathbb R^4$. Then $L$ admits a PL embedding into $\mathbb R^3$ such that any two disjoint cycles have zero linking number. There is $C$ such that every 2-dimensional simplicial complex having $n$ vertices and embeddable into $\mathbb R^4$ contains less than $Cn^{8/3}$ simplices of dimension 2. We also present the analogue of the second result for intrinsic linking.
We construct a graph G such that any embedding of G into R^{3} contains a nonsplit link of two components, where at least one of the components is a nontrivial knot. Further, for any m < n we produce a graph H so that every embedding of H contains a nonsplit n component link, where at least m of the components are nontrivial knots. We then turn our attention to complete graphs and show that for any given n, every embedding of a large enough complete graph contains a two component link whose linking number is a nonzero multiple of n.
