We give a new proof of the Morse Homology Theorem by constructing a chain complex associated to a Morse-Bott-Smale function that reduces to the Morse-Smale-Witten chain complex when the function is Morse-Smale and to the chain complex of smooth singular $N$-cube chains when the function is constant. We show that the homology of the chain complex is independent of the Morse-Bott-Smale function by using compactified moduli spaces of time dependent gradient flow lines to prove a Floer-type continuation theorem.
We introduce the notion of a template for discrete Morse theory. Templates provide a memory efficient approach to the computation of homological invariants (e.g., homology, persistent homology, Conley complexes) of cell complexes. We demonstrate the effectiveness of templates in two settings: first, by computing the homology of certain cubical complexes which are homotopy equivalent to $\mathbb{S}^d$ for $1\leq d \leq 20$, and second, by computing Conley complexes and connection matrices for a collection of examples arising from a Conley-Morse theory on spaces of braids diagrams.
The Morse-Bott inequalities relate the topology of a closed manifold to the topology of the critical point set of a Morse-Bott function defined on it. The Morse-Bott inequalities are sometimes stated under incorrect orientation assumptions. We show that these assumptions are insufficient with an explicit counterexample and clarify the origin of the mistake.
We give a generalization of Fukaya's Morse homotopy theoretic approach for 2-loop Chern--Simons perturbation theory to 3-valent graphs with arbitrary number of loops at least 2. We construct a sequence of invariants of integral homology 3-spheres with values in a space of 3-valent graphs (Jacobi diagrams or Feynman diagrams) by counting graphs in an integral homology 3-sphere satisfying certain condition described by a set of ordinary differential equations.
In this paper we survey three approaches to computing the homology of a finite dimensional compact smooth closed manifold using a Morse-Bott function and discuss relationships among the three approaches. The first approach is to perturb the function to a Morse function, the second approach is to use moduli spaces of cascades, and the third approach is to use the Morse-Bott multicomplex. With respect to an explicit perturbation (which can be used to derived the Morse-Bott inequalities), the first two approaches yield the same chain complex up to sign. The third approach is fundamentally differe…
In this paper we present a new approach to computing homology (with field coefficients) and persistent homology. We use concepts from discrete Morse theory, to provide an algorithm which can be expressed solely in terms of simple graph theoretical operations. We use iterated Morse decomposition, which allows us to sidetrack many problems related to the standard discrete Morse theory. In particular, this approach is provably correct in any dimension.
We establish surgery formulas for filtration of the Heegaard Floer homology associated with p/q surgery on a null-homologous knot K in a three-manifold Y, induced by K_{p/q}. Here K_{p/q} is the core of the attached solid torus (which produces the surgery). This would generalize a result of Ozsvath and Szabo. We will re-prove that surgery on non-trivial knots can not produce S^3, as a corollary of a non-vanishing result for the knot Floer homology of K_{p/q}.
Let $f:M \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ be a Morse-Bott function on a finite dimensional closed smooth manifold $M$. Choosing an appropriate Riemannian metric on $M$ and Morse-Smale functions $f_j:C_j \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ on the critical submanifolds $C_j$, one can construct a Morse chain complex whose boundary operator is defined by counting cascades \cite{FraTheA}. Similar data, which also includes a parameter $ε> 0$ that scales the Morse-Smale functions $f_j$, can be used to define an explicit perturbation of the Morse-Bott function $f$ to a Morse-Smale function $h_ε:M \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ \…
We present a set of notes on Morse Homology, which grew out of lectures the first named autor gave at Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich, Seoul National University, and the University of Augsburg. Although we do not discuss Floer homology in these notes, they are written having Floer homology in mind. Therefore, we use concepts which can be generalized to the semi-infinite dimensional case. In the finite dimensional case, they might not always be the most efficient ones but on the other hand, the finite dimensional case has the advantage that these concepts can be visualized much more easi…
We compute magnitude homology of various graphs using algebraic Morse theory. Specifically, we (1) give an alternative proof that trees are diagonal, (2) identify a new class of diagonal graphs, (3) prove that the icosahedral graph is diagonal, and (4) compute the magnitude homology of cycles. These results answer several questions of Hepworth and Willerton [HW17].
In this paper, we shall compute the chain complex and the corresponding homology of some Morse function $f$ over integer coefficients. The definition of the correct boundary operator requires a careful construction of moduli space of (pseudo)gradient flow lines orientations. We will then apply this construction in the computation of these homology groups on 4-manifolds.
In case of the heat flow on the free loop space of a closed Riemannian manifold non-triviality of Morse homology for semi-flows is established by constructing a natural isomorphism to singular homology of the loop space. The construction is also new in finite dimensions. The main idea is to build a Morse filtration using Conley pairs and their pre-images under the time-$T$-map of the heat flow. A crucial step is to contract each Conley pair onto its part in the unstable manifold. To achieve this we construct stable foliations for Conley pairs using the recently found backward $λ$-Lemma [31]. T…
We investigate combinatorial dynamical systems on simplicial complexes considered as {\em finite topological spaces}. Such systems arise in a natural way from sampling dynamics and may be used to reconstruct some features of the dynamics directly from the sample. We study the homological persistence of {\em Morse decompositions} of such systems, an important descriptor of the dynamics, as a tool for validating the reconstruction. Our framework can be viewed as a step toward extending the classical persistence theory to "vector cloud" data. We present experimental results on two numerical examp…
We define a class of multiparameter persistence modules that arise from a one-parameter family of functions on a topological space and prove that these persistence modules are stable. We show that this construction can produce indecomposable persistence modules with arbitrarily large dimension. In the case of smooth functions on a compact manifold, we apply cobordism theory and Cerf theory to study the resulting persistence modules. We give examples in which we obtain a complete description of the persistence module as a direct sum of indecomposable summands and provide a corresponding visuali…
A hypergraph can be obtained from a simplicial complex by deleting some non-maximal simplices. By [11], a hypergraph gives an associated simplicial complex. By [4], the embedded homology of a hypergraph is the homology of the infimum chain complex, or equivalently, the homology of the supremum chain complex. In this paper, we generalize the discrete Morse theory for simplicial complexes by R. Forman [5-7] and give a discrete Morse theory for hypergraphs. We use the critical simplices of the associated simplicial complex to construct a sub-chain complex of the infimum chain complex and a sub-ch…
In the present paper, we define Morse-Bott functions on manifolds with boundary which are generalizations of Morse functions and show Morse-Bott inequalities for these manifolds.
In this paper, we study Forman's discrete Morse theory in the context of weighted homology. We develop weighted versions of classical theorems in discrete Morse theory. A key difference in the weighted case is that simplicial collapses do not necessarily preserve weighted homology. We work out some sufficient conditions for collapses to preserve weighted homology, as well as study the effect of elementary removals on weighted homology. An application to sequence analysis is included, where we study the weighted ordered complexes of sequences.
Let $f$ be a Morse function on a smooth compact manifold $M$ with boundary. The path component $\mathrm{PH}_f^{-1}(D)$ containing $f$ of the space of Morse functions giving rise to the same Persistent Homology $D=\mathrm{PH}(f))$ is shown to be the same as the orbit of $f$ under pre-composition $ϕ\mapsto f\circ ϕ$ by diffeomorphisms of $M$ which are isotopic to the identity. Consequently we derive topological properties of the fiber $\mathrm{PH}_f^{-1}(D)$: In particular we compute its homotopy type for many compact surfaces $M$. In the $1$-dimensional settings where $M$ is the unit interval o…
Given a compact Riemannian manifold $(M g)$ and Morse function $f:m\to \mathbb{R}$ whose gradient flow satisfies the Morse-Smale condition, (i.e. the stable and unstable manifolds of f intersect transversely) we construct a chain complex called the Morse-Witten Complex. Our goal on this paper is show that the homology of the Morse-Witten complex is isomorphic to the singular homology of $M$.
Digraphs are generalizations of graphs in which each edge is assigned with a direction or two directions. In this paper, we define discrete Morse functions on digraphs, and prove that the homology of the Morse complex and the path homology are isomorphic for a transitive digraph. We also study the collapses defined by discrete gradient vector fields. Let $G$ be a digraph and $f$ a discrete Morse function. Assume the out-degree and in-degree of any zero-point of $f$ on $G$ are both 1. We prove that the original digraph $G$ and its $\mathcal{M}$-collapse $\tilde{G}$ have the same path homology g…
We introduce a new notion of persistence modules endowed with operators. It encapsulates the additional structure on Floer-type persistence modules coming from the intersection product with classes in the ambient (quantum) homology, along with a few other geometric situations. We provide sample applications to the $C^0$-geometry of Morse functions and to Hofer's geometry of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms, that go beyond spectral invariants and traditional persistent homology.
In this paper, we prove that discrete Morse functions on digraphs are flat Witten-Morse functions and Witten complexes of transitive digraphs approach to Morse complexes. We construct a chain complex consisting of the formal linear combinations of paths which are not only critical paths of the transitive closure but also allowed elementary paths of the digraph, and prove that the homology of the new chain complex is isomorphic to the path homology. On the basis of the above results, we give the Morse inequalities on digraphs.
We develop Morse-Bott theory on posets, generalizing both discrete Morse-Bott theory for regular complexes and Morse theory on posets. Moreover, we prove a Lusternik-Schnirelmann theorem for general matchings on posets, in particular, for Morse-Bott functions.
E. Sköldberg's Morse Theory from an Algebraic Viewpoint and M. Jöllenbeck's Algebraic Discrete Morse Theory and Applications to Commutative Algebra, which is the algebraic generalization of R. Forman's discrete Morse Theory for Cell Complexes, is discussed in the context of general chain complexes of free modules. Using this, we compute the Chevalley-Eilenberg (co)homology of the Lie algebra of all triangular matrices $\frak{sol}_n$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ or $\mathbb{Z}_p$ for large enough prime $p$. We determine the column and row in the table of $H_k(\frak{sol}_n;\mathbb{Z})$ where the $p$-torsio…
In the spirit of Morse homology initiated by Witten and Floer, we construct two $\infty$-categories $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$. The weak one $\mathcal{A}$ comes out of the Morse-Samle pairs and their higher homotopies, and the strict one $\mathcal{B}$ concerns the chain complexes of the Morse functions. Based on the boundary structures of the compactified moduli space of gradient flow lines of Morse functions with parameters, we build up a weak $\infty$-functor $\mathcal{F}: \mathcal{A}\rightarrow \mathcal{B}$. Higher algebraic structures behind Morse homology are revealed with the perspe…
Let $f:M \to \mathbb{R}$ be a Morse-Bott function on a compact smooth finite dimensional manifold $M$. The polynomial Morse inequalities and an explicit perturbation of $f$ defined using Morse functions $f_j$ on the critical submanifolds $C_j$ of $f$ show immediately that $MB_t(f) = P_t(M) + (1+t)R(t)$, where $MB_t(f)$ is the Morse-Bott polynomial of $f$ and $P_t(M)$ is the Poincaré polynomial of $M$. We prove that $R(t)$ is a polynomial with nonnegative integer coefficients by showing that the number of gradient flow lines of the perturbation of $f$ between two critical points $p,q \in C_j$ c…
We introduce a theoretical and computational framework to use discrete Morse theory as an efficient preprocessing in order to compute zigzag persistent homology. From a zigzag filtration of complexes $(K_i)$, we introduce a zigzag Morse filtration whose complexes $(A_i)$ are Morse reductions of the original complexes $(K_i)$, and we prove that they both have same persistent homology. This zigzag Morse filtration generalizes the filtered Morse complex of Mischaikow and Nanda, defined for standard persistence. The maps in the zigzag Morse filtration are forward and backward inclusions, as is sta…
In this paper we examine the use of topological methods for multivariate statistics. Using persistent homology from computational algebraic topology, a random sample is used to construct estimators of persistent homology. This estimation procedure can then be evaluated using the bottleneck distance between the estimated persistent homology and the true persistent homology. The connection to statistics comes from the fact that when viewed as a nonparametric regression problem, the bottleneck distance is bounded by the sup-norm loss. Consequently, a sharp asymptotic minimax bound is determined u…
A central problem in topological data analysis is that of computing the homology of a given simplicial complex. Said complexes can have arbitrary large number of simplices, as can happen, for example, if the space is the Rips-Vietoris or Cech complex of a large data cloud. Thus, pre-processing the simplicial complex to get a smaller complex with the same homology groups and then applying the homology algorithm to the smaller one, has been an active research topic in the last years. In this survey, we discuss some recent papers that examine the complexity of this simplification via Discrete Mor…
We construct Morse-Smale-Witten complex for an effective orientable orbifold. For a global quotient orbifold, we also construct a Morse-Bott complex. We show that certain type of critical points of a Morse function has to be discarded to construct such a complex, and gradient flows should be counted with suitable weights. The homology of these complexes are shown to be isomorphic to the singular homology of the quotient spaces under the self-indexing assumptions.
Let $f:M\to\mathbb{R}$ be a Morse-Bott function on a closed manifold $M$, so the set $Σ_f$ of its critical points is a closed submanifold whose connected components may have distinct dimensions. Denote by $\mathcal{S}(f) = \{h \in \mathcal{D}(M) \mid f\circ h=h \}$ the group of diffeomorphisms of $M$ preserving $f$ and let $\mathcal{D}(Σ_f)$ be the group of diffeomorphisms of $Σ_f$. We prove that the "restriction to $Σ_f$" map $ρ:\mathcal{S}(f) \to \mathcal{D}(Σ_f)$, $ρ(h) = h|_{Σ_f}$, is a locally trivial fibration over its image $ρ(\mathcal{S}(f))$.
