We consider a smooth Poisson affine variety with the trivial canonical bundle over complex numbers. For such a variety the deformation quantization algebra A_h enjoys the conditions of the Van den Bergh duality theorem and the corresponding dualizing module is determined by an outer automorphism of A_h intrinsic to A_h. We show how this automorphism can be expressed in terms of the modular class of the corresponding Poisson variety. We also prove that the Van den Bergh dualizing module of the deformation quantization algebra A_h is free if and only if the corresponding Poisson structure is unimodular.
A double Poisson bracket, in the sense of M. Van den Bergh, is an operation on an associative algebra $A$ which induces a Poisson bracket on each representation space $\operatorname{Rep}(A,n)$ in an explicit way. In this note, we study the impact of changing the Leibniz rules underlying a double bracket. This change amounts to make a suitable choice of $A$-bimodule structure on $A\otimes A$. In the most important cases, we describe how the choice of $A$-bimodule structure fixes an analogue to Jacobi identity, and we obtain induced Poisson brackets on representation spaces. The present theory a…
Let $M$ be a path-connected closed oriented $d$-dimensional smooth manifold and let ${\Bbbk}$ be a principal ideal domain. By Chas and Sullivan, the shifted free loop space homology of $M$, $H_{*+d}(LM)$ is a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra. Let $G$ be a topological group such that $M$ is a classifying space of $G$. Denote by $S_*(G)$ the (normalized) singular chains on $G$. Suppose that $G$ is discrete or path-connected. We show that there is a Van Den Bergh type isomorphism $$ HH^{-p}(S_*(G),S_*(G))\cong HH_{p+d}(S_*(G),S_*(G)). $$ Therefore, the Gerstenhaber algebra $HH^{*}(S_*(G),S_*(G))$ is a …
Let R be the set of isomorphism classes of ideals in the Weyl algebra $A=A_{1}$, and let C be the set of isomorphism classes of triples (V; X, Y), where V is a finite-dimensional (complex) vector space, and X, Y are endomorphisms of V such that [X,Y]+I has rank 1. Following a suggestion of L. Le Bruyn, we define a map $θ: R \to C$ by appropriately extending an ideal of A to a sheaf over a quantum projective plane, and then using standard methods of homological algebra. We prove that $θ$ is inverse to a bijection $ω: C \to R$ constructed in \cite{BW} by a completely different method. The main s…
Double Poisson structures (a la Van den Bergh) on commutative algebras are studied; the main result shows that there are no non-trivial such structures on polynomial algebras of Krull dimension greater than one. For a general commutative algebra A, this places significant restrictions on possible double Poisson structures. Exotic double Poisson structures are exhibited by the case of the polynomial algebra on a single generator, previously considered by Van den Bergh.
In this expository note, we explain the so-called Van den Bergh functor, which enables the formalization of the Kontsevich-Rosenberg principle, whereby a structure on an associative algebra has geometric meaning if it induces standard geometric structures on its representation spaces. Crawley-Boevey, Etingof and Ginzburg proved that bi-symplectic forms satisfy this principle; this implies that bi-symplectic algebras can be regarded as noncommutative symplectic manifolds. In this note, we use the Van den Bergh functor to give an alternative proof.
We exhibit new examples of double quasi-Poisson brackets, based on some classification results and the method of fusion. This method was introduced by Van den Bergh for a large class of double quasi-Poisson brackets which are said differential, and our main result is that it can be extended to arbitrary double quasi-Poisson brackets. We also provide an alternative construction for the double quasi-Poisson brackets of Van den Bergh associated to quivers, and of Massuyeau-Turaev associated to the fundamental groups of surfaces.
Double (quasi-)Poisson algebras were introduced by Van den Bergh as non-commutative analogues of algebras endowed with a (quasi-)Poisson bracket. In this work, we provide a study of morphisms of double (quasi-)Poisson algebras, which we relate to the $H_0$-Poisson structures of Crawley-Boevey. We prove in particular that the double (quasi-)Poisson algebra structure defined by Van den Bergh for an arbitrary quiver only depends upon the quiver seen as an undirected graph, up to isomorphism. We derive from our results a representation theoretic description of action-angle duality for several clas…

Let (S,L) be a Lie-Rinehart algebra over a commutative ring R. This article proves that, if S is flat as an R-module and has Van den Bergh duality in dimension n, and if L is finitely generated and projective with constant rank d as an S-module, then the enveloping algebra of (S,L) has Van den Bergh duality in dimension n+d. When, moreover, S is Calabi-Yau and the d-th exterior power of L is free over S, the article proves that the enveloping algebra is skew-Calabi-Yau, and it describes a Nakayama automorphism of it. These considerations are specialised to Poisson enveloping algebras. They are…
The origin and interplay of products and dualities in algebraic (co)homology theories is ascribed to a $\times_A$-Hopf algebra structure on the relevant universal enveloping algebra. This provides a unified treatment for example of results by Van den Bergh about Hochschild (co)homology and by Huebschmann about Lie-Rinehart (co)homology.
Van den Bergh has defined the blowup of a noncommutative surface at a point lying on a commutative divisor. We study one aspect of the construction, with an eventual aim of defining more general kinds of noncommutative blowups. Our basic object of study is a quasi-scheme X (a Grothendieck category). Given a closed subcategory Z, in order to define a blowup of X along Z one first needs to have a functor F which is an analog of tensoring with the defining ideal of Z. Following Van den Bergh, a closed subcategory Z which has such a functor is called well-closed. We show that well-closedness can b…
We study algebras constructed by quantum Hamiltonian reduction associated with symplectic quotients of symplectic vector spaces, including deformed preprojective algebras, symplectic reflection algebras (rational Cherednik algebras), and quantization of hypertoric varieties introduced by Musson and Van den Bergh. We determine BRST cohomologies associated with these quantum Hamiltonian reductions. To compute these BRST cohomologies, we make use of method of deformation quantization (DQ-algebras) and F-action studied in [Kashiwara-Rouquier], and in [Gordon-Losev].
Koszul property was generalized to homogeneous algebras of degree N>2 in [5], and related to N-complexes in [7]. We show that if the N-homogeneous algebra A is generalized Koszul, AS-Gorenstein and of finite global dimension, then one can apply the Van den Bergh duality theorem [23] to A, i.e., there is a Poincare duality between Hochschild homology and cohomology of A, as for N=2.
We discuss double Poisson structures in sense of M. Van den Bergh on free associative algebras focusing on the case of quadratic Poisson brackets. We establish their relations with an associative version of Young-Baxter equations, we study a bi-hamiltonian property of the linear-quadratic pencil of the double Poisson structure and propose a classification of the quadratic double Poisson brackets in the case of the algebra with two free generators. Many new examples of quadratic double Poisson brackets are proposed.
Recently, Bocklandt proved a conjecture by Van den Bergh in its graded version, stating that a graded quiver algebra (with relations) which is Calabi-Yau of dimension 3 is defined from a homogeneous potential W. In this paper, we prove that if we add to W any potential of smaller degree, we get a Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt deformation of A. Such PBW deformations are Calabi-Yau and are characterised among all the PBW deformations of A. Various examples are presented.
Given an oriented surface S with base point * on the boundary, we introduce for all N>0, a canonical quasi-Poisson bracket on the space of N-dimensional linear representations of π_1(S,*). Our bracket extends the well-known Poisson bracket on GL_N-invariant functions on this space. Our main tool is a natural structure of a quasi-Poisson double algebra (in the sense of M. Van den Bergh) on the group algebra of π_1(S,*).
For any graded bialgebras $A$ and $B$, we define a commutative graded algebra $A_B$ representing the functor of $B$-representations of $A$. When $A$ is a cocommutative graded Hopf algebra and $B$ is a commutative ungraded Hopf algebra, we introduce a method deriving a Gerstenhaber bracket in $A_B$ from a Fox pairing in $A$ and a balanced biderivation in $B$. Our construction is inspired by Van den Bergh's non-commutative Poisson geometry, and may be viewed as an algebraic generalization of the Atiyah--Bott--Goldman Poisson structures on moduli spaces of representations of surface groups.
We generalize Kontsevich's construction of L-infinity derivations of polyvector fields from the affine space to an arbitrary smooth algebraic variety. More precisely, we construct a map (in the homotopy category) from Kontsevich's graph complex to the deformation complex of the sheaf of polyvector fields on a smooth algebraic variety. We show that the action of Deligne-Drinfeld elements of the Grothendieck-Teichmueller Lie algebra on the cohomology of the sheaf of polyvector fields coincides with the action of odd components of the Chern character. Using this result, we deduce that the A-hat g…
Let $A$ be a Koszul (or more generally, $N$-Koszul) Calabi-Yau algebra. Inspired by the works of Kontsevich, Ginzburg and Van den Bergh, we show that there is a derived non-commutative Poisson structure on $A$, which induces a graded Lie algebra structure on the cyclic homology of $A$; moreover, we show that the Hochschild homology of $A$ is a Lie module over the cyclic homology and the Connes long exact sequence is in fact a sequence of Lie modules. Finally, we show that the Leibniz-Loday bracket associated to the derived non-commutative Poisson structure on $A$ is naturally mapped to the Ger…
We connect generalizations of Poisson algebras with the classical and associative Yang-Baxter equations. In particular, we prove that solutions of the classical Yang-Baxter equation on a vector space V are equivalent to ``twisted'' Poisson algebra structures on the tensor algebra TV. Here, ``twisted'' refers to working in the category of graded vector spaces equipped with S_n-actions in degree n. We show that the associative Yang-Baxter equation is similarly related to the double Poisson algebras of Van den Bergh. We generalize to L-infinity-algebras and define ``infinity'' versions of Yang-Ba…
Let $X$ be a smooth complex algebraic variety and let $\operatorname{Coh} (X)$ denote its Abelian category of coherent sheaves. By the work of W. Lowen and M. Van den Bergh, it is known that the deformation theory of $\operatorname{Coh} (X)$ as an Abelian category can be seen to be controlled by the Gerstenhaber-Schack complex associated to the restriction of the structure sheaf $\mathcal O_X \vert_{\mathfrak U}$ to a cover of affine open sets. We construct an explicit $L_\infty$ algebra structure on the Gerstenhaber-Schack complex controlling the higher deformation theory of $\mathcal O_X \ve…
Poisson brackets (P.b) are the natural initial terms for the deformation quantization of commutative algebras. There is an open problem whether any Poisson bracket on the polynomial algebra of $n$ variables can be quantized. It is known (Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt theorem) that any linear P.b. for all $n$ can be quantized. On the other hand, it is easy to show that in case $n=2$ any P.b. is quantizable as well. Quadratic P.b. appear as the unitial terms for the quantization of polynomial algebras as quadratic algebras. The problem of the quantization of quadratic P.b. is also open. In the paper we…
It was established by Boalch that Euler continuants arise as Lie group valued moment maps for a class of wild character varieties described as moduli spaces of points on $\mathbb{P}^1$ by Sibuya. Furthermore, Boalch noticed that these varieties are multiplicative analogues of certain Nakajima quiver varieties originally introduced by Calabi, which are attached to the quiver $Γ_n$ on two vertices and $n$ equioriented arrows. In this article, we go a step further by unveiling that the Sibuya varieties can be understood using noncommutative quasi-Poisson geometry modeled on the quiver $Γ_n$. We p…
