Let R be the set of isomorphism classes of ideals in the Weyl algebra $A=A_{1}$, and let C be the set of isomorphism classes of triples (V; X, Y), where V is a finite-dimensional (complex) vector space, and X, Y are endomorphisms of V such that [X,Y]+I has rank 1. Following a suggestion of L. Le Bruyn, we define a map $θ: R \to C$ by appropriately extending an ideal of A to a sheaf over a quantum projective plane, and then using standard methods of homological algebra. We prove that $θ$ is inverse to a bijection $ω: C \to R$ constructed in \cite{BW} by a completely different method. The main step in the proof is to show that $θ$ is equivariant with respect to natural actions of the group G=Aut(A) on R and C: for that we have to study also the extensions of an ideal to certain weighted quantum projective planes. Along the way, we find an elementary description of θ.
We use twisted sheaves to study the problem of index reduction for Brauer classes. In general terms, this problem may be phrased as follows: given a field $k$, a $k$-variety $X$, and a class $α\in \Br(k)$, compute the index of the class $α_{k(X)} \in \Br(X)$ obtained from $α$ by extension of scalars to $k(X)$. We give a general method for computing index reduction which refines classical results of Schofield and van den Bergh. When $X$ is a curve of genus 1, we use Atiyah's theorem on the structure of stable vector bundles with integral slope to show that our formula simplifies dramatically, g…
Recently, de Thanhoffer de Volcsey and Van den Bergh showed that Grothendieck groups of "noncommutative Del Pezzo surfaces" with an exceptional sequence of length 4 are isomorphic to one of three types, the third one not coming from a commutative Del Pezzo surface. In this paper, we adapt the theory of noncommutative $\mathbb{P}^1$-bundles as appearing in the work of Van den Bergh and Nyman to produce a sheaf $\mathbb{Z}$-algebra whose associated Proj has an exceptional sequence of length 4 for which the Gram matrix is of this third type. We show that this noncommutative scheme is noetherian a…
Non-commutative crepant resolutions are algebraic objects defined by Van den Bergh to realize an equivalence of derived categories in birational geometry. They are motivated by tilting theory, the McKay correspondence, and the minimal model program, and have applications to string theory and representation theory. In this expository article I situate Van den Bergh's definition within these contexts and describe some of the current research in the area.
One of the major open problems in noncommutative algebraic geometry is the classification of noncommutative projective surfaces (or, slightly more generally, of noetherian connected graded domains of Gelfand-Kirillov dimension 3). In a companion paper the authors described a noncommutative version of blowing down and, for example, gave a noncommutative analogue of Castelnuovo's classic theorem that lines of self-intersection (-1) on a smooth surface can be contracted. In this paper we will use these techniques to construct explicit birational transformations between various noncommutative surf…
In the ongoing programme to classify noncommutative projective surfaces (connected graded noetherian domains of Gelfand-Kirillov dimension three) a natural question is to determine the minimal models within any birational class. In this paper we show that the generic noncommutative projective plane (corresponding to the three dimensional Sklyanin algebra R) as well as noncommutative analogues of P^1 x P^1 and of the Hirzebruch surface F_2 (arising from Van den Bergh's quadrics R) satisfy very strong minimality conditions. Translated into an algebraic question, where one is interested in a maxi…
In a previous paper (arXiv:1410.5207) certain birational transformations were constructed between the noncommutative schemes associated to quadratic and cubic three dimensional Sklyanin algebras. In the current paper we consider the inverse birational transformations and show that they are of the same type. Moreover we extend everything to the $\mathbb{Z}$-algebras context, which allows us to incorporate the noncommutative quadrics introduced by Van den Bergh.
We compute the Grothendieck group K_0 of non-commutative analogues of quantum projective space bundles. Our results specialize to give the Grothendieck groups of non-commutative analogues of projective spaces, and specialize to recover the Grothendieck group of a usual projective space bundle over a regular noetherian separated scheme. As an application we develop an intersection theory for the quantum ruled surfaces defined by Van den Bergh.
In this paper we prove the following theorem. Let $f$ be a dominant endomorphism of a smooth projective surface over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. If there is no nonconstant invariant rational function under $f$, then there exists a closed point whose orbit under $f$ is Zariski dense. This result gives us a positive answer to the Zariski dense orbit conjecture proposed by Medvedev and Scanlon, by Amerik, Bogomolov and Rovinsky, and by Zhang, for endomorphisms of smooth projective surfaces. Moreover, we define a new canonical topology on varieties over an algebraically cl…
Let $X$ be a smooth complex algebraic variety and let $\operatorname{Coh} (X)$ denote its Abelian category of coherent sheaves. By the work of W. Lowen and M. Van den Bergh, it is known that the deformation theory of $\operatorname{Coh} (X)$ as an Abelian category can be seen to be controlled by the Gerstenhaber-Schack complex associated to the restriction of the structure sheaf $\mathcal O_X \vert_{\mathfrak U}$ to a cover of affine open sets. We construct an explicit $L_\infty$ algebra structure on the Gerstenhaber-Schack complex controlling the higher deformation theory of $\mathcal O_X \ve…
Let Q be an affine quiver and let $\mathfrak{n}$ be the positive part of the affine Lie algebra associated to Q. We provide a construction of $\mathfrak{n}$ using the semistable irreducible components in the Lusztig nilpotent variety associated to Q. This confirms a conjecture of Frenkel, Malkin, and Vybornov on defining the so-called algebra of BPS states on the minimal resolution of a Kleinian singularity. Using the results of Crawley-Boevey and Van den Bergh, we show that our construction is closely connected to Kac's constant term conjecture in the case of an affine quiver.
We study Van den Bergh's noncommutative symmetric algebra $\mathbb{S}^{nc}(M)$ (over division rings) via Minamoto's theory of Fano algebras. In particular, we show $\mathbb{S}^{nc}(M)$ is coherent, and its proj category $\mathbb{P}^{nc}(M)$ is derived equivalent to the corresponding bimodule species. This generalizes the main theorem of \cite{minamoto}, which in turn is a generalization of Beilinson's derived equivalence. As corollaries, we show that $\mathbb{P}^{nc}(M)$ is hereditary and there is a structure theorem for sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^{nc}(M)$ analogous to that for $\mathbb{P}^1$.
The Hilbert scheme of point modules was introduced by Artin-Tate-Van den Bergh to study non-commutative graded algebras. The key tool is the construction of a map from the algebra to a twisted ring on this Hilbert scheme. In this paper, we study moduli stacks of more general "fat" point modules, and show that there is a similar map to a twisted ring associated to the stack. This is used to provide a sufficient criterion for a non-commutative projective surface to be birationally PI. It is hoped that such a criterion will be useful in understanding Mike Artin's conjecture on the birational clas…
The twisted homogeneous coordinate ring is one of the basic constructions of the noncommutative projective geometry of Artin, Van den Bergh, and others. Chan generalized this construction to the multi-homogeneous case, using a concept of right ampleness for a finite collection of invertible sheaves and automorphisms of a projective scheme. From this he derives that certain multi-homogeneous rings, such as tensor products of twisted homogeneous coordinate rings, are right noetherian. We show that right and left ampleness are equivalent and that there is a simple criterion for such ampleness. Th…
The goal of this note is to first prove that for a well behaved $\mathbb{Z}^2$-algebra $R$, the category $QGr(R) := Gr(R)/Tors(R)$ is equivalent to $QGr(R_Δ)$ where $R_Δ$ is a diagonal-like sub-$\mathbb{Z}$-algebra of $R$. Afterwards we use this result to prove that the $\mathbb{Z}^2$-algebras as introduced in [ArXiV:1607.08383] are QGr-equivalent to a diagonal-like sub-$\mathbb{Z}$-algebra which is a simultaneous noncommutative blow-up of a quadratic and a cubic Sklyanin algebra. As such we link the noncommutative birational transformation and the associated $\mathbb{Z}^2$-algebras as appeari…
Let $K$ be a field of characteristic zero, $X$ and $Y$ be smooth $K$-varieties, and let $G$ be a algebraic $K$-group. Given two algebraic morphisms $φ:X\rightarrow G$ and $ψ:Y\rightarrow G$, we define their convolution $φ*ψ:X\times Y\to G$ by $φ*ψ(x,y)=φ(x)\cdotψ(y)$. We then show that this operation yields morphisms with improved smoothness properties. More precisely, we show that for any morphism $φ:X\rightarrow G$ which is dominant when restricted to each absolutely irreducible component of $X$, by convolving it with itself finitely many times, one can obtain a flat morphism with reduced fi…
Let $R$ be a finite dimensional algebra of finite global dimension over a field $k$. In this paper, we will characterize a $k$-linear abelian category $\mathscr C$ such that $\mathscr C\cong \operatorname {tails} A$ for some graded right coherent AS-regular algebra $A$ over $R$. As an application, we will prove that if $\mathscr C$ is a smooth quadric surface in a quantum $\mathbb P^3$ in the sense of Smith and Van den Bergh, then there exists a right noetherian AS-regular algebra $A$ over $kK_2$ of dimension 3 and of Gorenstein parameter 2 such that $\mathscr C\cong \operatorname {tails} A$ w…
In the 1990s, in work of Le Bruyn and Smith and in work of Le Bruyn and Van den Bergh, it was proved that point modules and line modules over the homogenization of the universal enveloping algebra of a finite-dimensional Lie algebra describe useful data associated to the Lie algebra. In particular, in the case of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})$, there is a correspondence between Verma modules and certain line modules that associates a pair $(\mathfrak{h},\,ϕ)$, where $\mathfrak{h}$ is a two-dimensional Lie subalgebra of $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})$ and $ϕ\in \mathfrak{h}^*$ sati…
