We construct an example of the birationally rigid complete intersection of a quadric and a cubic in $\PA^5$ with an ordinary double point, which under a small deformation gives a non-rigid Fano variety. Thus we show that birational rigidity is not open in moduli.
In this paper we give a criterion for birational rigidity of del Pezzo fibrations of degree 1 and 2 with only quotient singularities. As an application, we prove birational rigidity of suitable del Pezzo fibrations admitting an action of the Klein simple group.
It is proved that a three-dimensional double cone is a birationally rigid variety. We also compute the group of birational automorphisms of such a variety. This work is based on the method of "untwisting" maximal singularities of linear system.
In this paper we classify nodal rational non-$\mathbb{Q}$-factorial del Pezzo threefolds of degree 2 which can be $G$-birationally rigid for some subgroup $G\subset \operatorname{Aut}(X)$.
We highlight a relation between the existence of Sarkisov links and the finite generation of (certain) Cox rings. We introduce explicit methods to use this relation in order to prove birational rigidity statements. To illustrate, we complete the birational rigidity results of Okada for Fano complete intersection 3-folds in singular weighted projective spaces.
We prove birational rigidity and calculate the group of birational automorphisms of a nodal Q-factorial double cover $X$ of a smooth three-dimensional quadric branched over a quartic section. We also prove that $X$ is Q-factorial provided that it has at most 11 singularities; moreover, we give an example of a non-Q-factorial variety of this type with 12 simple double singularities.
Given a surface $S$ and a finite group $G$ of automorphisms of $S$, consider the birational maps $S\dashrightarrow S'$ that commute with the action of $G$. This leads to the notion of a $G$-minimal variety. A natural question arises: for a fixed group $G$, is there a birational $G$-map between two different $G$-minimal surfaces? If no such map exists, the surface is said to be $G$-birationally rigid. This paper determines the $G$-rigidity of the projective plane for every finite subgroup $G\subset\mbox{PGL}_3\left(\mathbb{C}\right)$.
Extending previous results, we prove that for $n \ge 5$ all hypersurfaces of degree $n+1$ in ${\mathbb P}^{n+1}$ with isolated ordinary double points are birational superrigid and K-stable, hence admit a weak Kähler--Einstein metric.
We prove that every smooth complete intersection X defined by s hypersurfaces of degree d_1, ... , d_s in a projective space of dimension d_1 + ... + d_s is birationally superrigid if 5s +1 is at most 2(d_1 + ... + d_s + 1)/sqrt{d_1...d_s}. In particular, X is non-rational and Bir(X)=Aut(X). We also prove birational superrigidity of singular complete intersections with similar numerical condition. These extend the results proved by Tommaso de Fernex.
We prove birational superrigidity of Fano double hypersurfaces of index one with quadratic and multi-quadratic singularities, satisfying certain regularity conditions, and give an effective explicit lower bound for the codimension of the set of non-rigid varieties in the natural parameter space of the family. The lower bound is quadratic in the dimension of the variety. The proof is based on the techniques of hypertangent divisors combined with the recently discovered $4n^2$-inequality for complete intersection singularities.
We give a sufficient condition for birational superrigidity of del Pezzo fibrations of degree $1$ with only $\frac{1}{2} (1,1,1)$ singular points, generalizing the so called $K^2$-condition. As an application, we also prove that a del Pezzo fibrations of degree $1$ with only $\frac{1}{2} (1,1,1)$ singular points embedded in a toric $\mathbb{P} (1,1,2,3)$-bundle over $\mathbb{P}^1$ is birationally superrigid if and only if it satisfies the $K$-condition.
We establish birational superrigidity for a large class of singular projective Fano hypersurfaces of index one. In the special case of isolated singularities, our result applies for instance to: (1) hypersurfaces with semi-homogeneous singularities of multiplicity asymptotically bounded by twice the square root of the dimension of the hypersurface, (2) hypersurfaces with isolated singularities whose Tyurina numbers satisfy a similar bound, and (3) hypersurfaces with isolated singularities whose dual variety is a hypersurface of degree sufficiently close to the expected degree.
We give a brief survey of the concept of birational rigidity, from its origins in the two-dimensional birational geometry, to its current state. The main ingredients of the method of maximal singularities are discussed. The principal results of the theory of birational rigidity of higher-dimensional Fano varieties and fibrations are given and certain natural conjectures are formulated.
Varieties fibered into del Pezzo surfaces form a class of possible outputs of the minimal model program. It is known that del Pezzo fibrations of degrees $1$ and $2$ over the projective line with smooth total space satisfying the so-called $K^2$-condition are birationally rigid: their Mori fibre space structure is unique. This implies that they are not birational to any Fano varieties, conic bundles or other del Pezzo fibrations. In particular, they are irrational. The families of del Pezzo fibrations with smooth total space of degree $2$ are rather special, as for "most" families a general de…
A known conjecture of Grinenko in birational geometry asserts that a Mori fibre space with the structure of del Pezzo fibration of low degree is birationally rigid if and only if its anticanonical class is an interior point in the cone of mobile divisors. The conjecture is proved to be true for smooth models (with a generality assumption for degree 3). It is speculated that the conjecture holds for, at least, Gorenstein models in degree 1 and 2. In this article, I present a (Gorenstein) counterexample in degree 2 to this conjecture.
It is well-known that a nonsingular minimal cubic surface is birationally rigid; the group of its birational selfmaps is generated by biregular selfmaps and birational involutions such that all relations between the latter are implied by standard relations between reflections on an elliptic curve. It is also known that a factorial nodal quartic threefold is birationally rigid and its group of birational selfmaps is generated by biregular ones and certain birational involutions. We prove that all relations between these involutions are implied by standard relations on elliptic curves, complete …
We develop the quadratic technique of proving birational rigidity of Fano-Mori fibre spaces over a higher-dimensional base. As an application, we prove birational rigidity of generic fibrations into Fano double spaces of dimension $M\geqslant 4$ and index one over a rationally connected base of dimension at most $\frac12 (M-2)(M-1)$. An estimate for the codimension of the subset of hypersurfaces of a given degree in the projective space with a positive-dimensional singular set is obtained, which is close to the optimal one.

We study the birational rigidity problem for smooth Mori fibrations on del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1 and 2. For degree 1 we obtain a complete description of rigid and non-rigid cases.
We use intersection theory, degeneration techniques and jet schemes to study log canonical thresholds. Our first result gives a lower bound for the log canonical threshold of a pair in terms of the log canonical threshold of the image by a suitable smooth morphism. This in turn is based on an inequality relating the log canonical threshold and the Samuel multiplicity, generalizing our previous result from math.AG/0205171. We then give a lower bound for the log canonical threshold of an affine scheme defined by homogeneous equations of the same degree in terms of the dimension of the non log te…
We survey some results on the nonrationality and birational rigidity of certain hypersurfaces of Fano type. The focus is on hypersurfaces of Fano index one, but hypersurfaces of higher index are also discussed.
We complete the study of birational geometry of Fano fiber spaces $π\colon V\to {\mathbb P}^1$, the fiber of which is a Fano double hypersurface of index 1. For each family of these varieties we either prove birational rigidity or produce explicitly non-trivial structures of Fano fiber spaces. A new linear method of studying movable systems on Fano fiber spaces $V/{\mathbb P}^1$ is developed.
We classify birationally rigid orbifold Fano 3-folds of index one defined by $5 \times 5$ Pfaffians. We give a sharp criterion for birational rigidity of these families based on the type of singularities that the varieties admit. Various conjectures are born out of our study, highlighting a possible approach to the classification of terminal Fano 3-folds. The birationally rigid cases are the first known rigid examples of Fanos that are not (weighted) complete intersection.
We prove the birational rigidity of Fano complete intersections of index 1 with a singular point of high multiplicity, which can be close to the degree of the variety. In particular, the groups of birational and biregular automorphisms of these varieties are equal, and they are non-rational. The proof is based on the techniques of the method of maximal singularities, the generalized $4n^2$-inequality for complete intersection singularities and the technique of hypertangent divisors.
This paper presents a rigidity property of the exceptional locus of some kind of small birational contractions. An application in the context of geometric transitions and Calabi-Yau threefolds moduli space is then given, with some physical implication in studying the so-called Vacuum Degeneracy Problem.
Assuming a particular case of Borisov--Alexeev--Borisov conjecture, we prove that finite subgroups of the automorphism group of a finitely generated field over Q have bounded orders. Further, we investigate which algebraic varieties have groups of birational selfmaps satisfying the Jordan property.
We continue to study birational geometry of Fano fibrations $π\colon V\to {\mathbb P}^1$ the fibers of which are Fano double hypersurfaces of index 1. For a majority of families of this type, which do not satisfy the condition of sufficient twistedness over the base, we prove birational rigidity (in particular, it means that there are no other structures of a fibration into rationally connected varieties) and compute their groups of birational self-maps. We considerably improve the principal components of the method of maximal singularities, in the first place, the technique of counting multip…
In this paper we classify all potentially G-birationally rigid del Pezzo threefolds of degree 4 and their automorphism groups and prove the G-birational rigidity of one of them
In this paper we prove birational rigidity of large classes of Fano-Mori fibre spaces over a base of arbitrary dimension, bounded from above by a constant that depends on the dimension of the fibre only. In order to do that, we first show that if every fibre of a Fano-Mori fibre space satisfies certain natural conditions, then every birational map onto another Fano-Mori fibre space is fibre-wise. After that we construct large classes of fibre spaces (into Fano double spaces of index one and into Fano hypersurfaces of index one) which satisfy those conditions. The paper is a follow up of my pre…
We prove an optimal result on the birational rigidity and K-stability of index $1$ hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ with ordinary singularities when $n\gg 0$ and also study the birational superrigidity and K-stability of certain weighted complete intersections. As an application, we show that birational superrigidity is not a locally closed property in moduli. We also prove (in the appendix) that the alpha invariant function is constructible in some families of complete intersections.
We complete the analysis on the birational rigidity of quasismooth Fano 3-fold deformation families appearing in the Graded Ring Database as a complete intersection. When such a deformation family $X$ has Fano index at least 2 and is minimally embedded in a weighted projective space in codimension 2, we determine which cyclic quotient singularity is a maximal centre. If a cyclic quotient singularity is a maximal centre, we construct a Sarkisov link to a non-isomorphic Mori fibre space or a birational involution. This allows, in particular, the construction of new examples of Fano 3-folds of co…
For a birational analogue of minimal elliptic surfaces X/Y, the singularities of the fibers define a log structure in codimension one on Y. Via base change, we have a log structure in codimension one on Y', for any birational model Y' of Y. We show that these codimension one log structures glue to a unique log structure, defined on some birational model of Y (Shokurov's BP Conjecture). We have three applications: inverse of adjunction for the above mentioned fiber spaces, the invariance of Shokurov's FGA-algebras under restriction to exceptional lc centers, and a remark on the moduli part of p…
We study a wide class of affine varieties, which we call affine Fano varieties. By analogy with birationally super-rigid Fano varieties, we define super-rigidity for affine Fano varieties, and provide many examples and non-examples of super-rigid affine Fano varieties.
We prove that for N greater than or equal to 4, all smooth hypersurfaces of degree N in P^N are birationally superrigid. First discovered in the case N = 4 by Iskovskikh and Manin in a work that started this whole direction of research, this property was later conjectured to hold in general by Pukhlikov. The proof relies on the method of maximal singularities in combination with a delicate formula on restrictions of multiplier ideals.
Pseudo-automorphisms are birational transformations acting as regular automorphisms in codimension 1. We import ideas from geometric group theory to prove that a group of birational transformations that satisfies a fixed point property on CAT(0) cubical complexes, for example a discrete countable group with Kazhdan Property (T), is birationally conjugate to a group acting by pseudo-automorphisms on some non-empty Zariski-open subset. We apply this argument to classify groups of birational transformations of surfaces with this fixed point property up to birational conjugacy.
