In this paper, we provide an essentially self-contained and detailed account of the fundamental works of Hamilton and the recent breakthrough of Perelman on the Ricci flow and their application to the geometrization of three-manifolds. In particular, we give a detailed exposition of a complete proof of the Poincaré conjecture due to Hamilton and Perelman.

Geometrization in Geometry

So far, the most magnificent breakthrough in mathematics in the 21st century is the Geometrization Theorem, a bold conjecture by William Thurston (generalizing Poincaré's Conjecture) and proved by Grigory Perelman, based on the program suggested by Richard Hamilton. In this survey article, we will explain the statement of this result, also presenting some examples of how it can be used to obtain interesting results in differential geometry.

Perelman's collapsing theorem for 3-manifolds

We will simplify the earlier proofs of Perelman's collapsing theorem of 3-manifolds given by Shioya-Yamaguchi and Morgan-Tian. Among other things, we use Perelman's semi-convex analysis of distance functions to construct the desired local Seifert fibration structure on collapsed 3-manifolds. The verification of Perelman's collapsing theorem is the last step of Perelman's proof of Thurston's Geometrization Conjecture on the classification of 3-manifolds. A simple proof of Perelman's collapsing theorem for 3-manifolds

We will simplify earlier proofs of Perelman's collapsing theorem for 3-manifolds given by Shioya-Yamaguchi and Morgan-Tian. Among other things, we use Perelman's critical point theory (e.g., multiple conic singularity theory and his fibration theory) for Alexandrov spaces to construct the desired local Seifert fibration structure on collapsed 3-manifolds. Completion of the Proof of the Geometrization Conjecture

This article is a sequel to the book `Ricci Flow and the Poincare Conjecture' by the same authors. Using the main results of that book we establish the Geometrization Conjecture for all compact, orientable three-manifolds following the approach indicated by Perelman in his preprints on the subject. Another way of answering Henri Poincare's fundamental question

After G. Perelman's solution of the Poincare Conjecture, this is a different way toward it. Given a simply connected, closed 3-manifold M, we produce a homotopy disc H, which arises from M by a finite sequence of simple modifications and, almost miraculously, can be imbedded into the ordinary space R^3. It follows that H is a disc, hence M is a sphere. In order to construct H, we use a special stratification of M, based on the fact that M is simply connected.

Heat kernel bounds, ancient $κ$ solutions and the Poincaré conjecture

We establish certain Gaussian type upper bound for the heat kernel of the conjugate heat equation associated with 3 dimensional ancient $κ$ solutions to the Ricci flow. As an application, using the $W$ entropy associated with the heat kernel, we give a different and shorter proof of Perelman's classification of backward limits of these ancient solutions. The current paper together with \cite{Z:2} and a different proof of universal noncollapsing due to Chen and Zhu \cite{ChZ:1} lead to a simplified proof of the Poincaré conjecture without using reduced distance and reduced volume.

Calabi Conjecture

This memoire consists of two main results. In the first one we describe Ricci flow theory and we give an educative way for proving Elliptization Conjecture and then we prove Poincare conjecture which is the second proof of Perelman for Poincare conjecture. In the second one which is the main propose of our memoire, we exhibit a complete proof of Calabi-Yau conjecture.

Ricci Flow and the Poincare Conjecture

This manuscript contains a detailed proof of the Poincare Conjecture. The arguments we present here are expanded versions of the ones given by Perelman in his three preprints posted in 2002 and 2003. This is a revised version taking in account the comments of the referees and others. It has been reformatted in the AMS book style.
