Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices, $m$ edges, average degree $δ$, and maximum degree $Δ$. The "oriented chromatic number" of $G$ is the maximum, taken over all orientations of $G$, of the minimum number of colours in a proper vertex colouring such that between every pair of colour classes all edges have the same orientation. We investigate the oriented chromatic number of graphs, such as the hypercube, for which $δ\geq\log n$. We prove that every such graph has oriented chromatic number at least $Ω(\sqrt{n})$. In the case that $δ\geq(2+ε)\log n$, this lower bound is improved to $Ω(\sqrt{m})$. Through a simple connection with harmonious colourings, we prove a general upper bound of $O(Δ\sqrt{n})$ on the oriented chromatic number. Moreover this bound is best possible for certain graphs. These lower and upper bounds are particularly close when $G$ is ($c\log n$)-regular for some constant $c>2$, in which case the oriented chromatic number is between $Ω(\sqrt{n\log n})$ and $O(\sqrt{n}\log n)$.
An oriented cycle is an orientation of a undirected cycle. We first show that for any oriented cycle $C$, there are digraphs containing no subdivision of $C$ (as a subdigraph) and arbitrarily large chromatic number. In contrast, we show that for any $C$ a cycle with two blocks, every strongly connected digraph with sufficiently large chromatic number contains a subdivision of $C$. We prove a similar result for the antidirected cycle on four vertices (in which two vertices have out-degree $2$ and two vertices have in-degree $2$).
In this thesis, we try to treat the problem of oriented paths in n-chromatic digraphs. We first treat the case of antidirected paths in 5-chromatic digraphs, where we explain El-Sahili's theorem and provide an elementary and shorter proof of it. We then treat the case of paths with two blocks in n-chromatic digraphs with n greater than 4, where we explain the two different approaches of Addario-Berry et al. and of El-Sahili. We indicate a mistake in Addario-Berry et al.'s proof and provide a correction for it.
Oriented chromatic number of an oriented graph $G$ is the minimum order of an oriented graph $H$ such that $G$ admits a homomorphism to $H$. The oriented chromatic number of an unoriented graph $G$ is the maximal chromatic number over all possible orientations of $G$. In this paper, we prove that every Halin graph has oriented chromatic number at most 8, improving a previous bound by Hosseini Dolama and Sopena, and confirming the conjecture given by Vignal.
The oriented chromatic polynomial of a oriented graph outputs the number of oriented $k$-colourings for any input $k$. We fully classify those oriented graphs for which the oriented graph has the same chromatic polynomial as the underlying simple graph, closing an open problem posed by Sopena. We find that such oriented graphs can be both identified and constructed in polynomial time as they are exactly the family of quasi-transitive oriented co-interval graphs. We study the analytic properties of this polynomial and show that there exist oriented graphs which have chromatic polynomials have r…
In this short note, we extend the result of Galluccio, Goddyn, and Hell, which states that graphs of large girth excluding a minor are nearly bipartite. We also prove a similar result for the oriented chromatic number, from which follows in particular that graphs of large girth excluding a minor have oriented chromatic number at most $5$, and for the $p$th chromatic number $χ_p$, from which follows in particular that graphs $G$ of large girth excluding a minor have $χ_p(G)\leq p+2$.
In this paper we consider colorings of oriented graphs, i.e. digraphs without cycles of length 2. Given some oriented graph $G=(V,E)$, an oriented $r$-coloring for $G$ is a partition of the vertex set $V$ into $r$ independent sets, such that all the arcs between two of these sets have the same direction. The oriented chromatic number of $G$ is the smallest integer $r$ such that $G$ permits an oriented $r$-coloring. In this paper we consider the Oriented Chromatic Number problem on classes of recursively defined oriented graphs. Oriented co-graphs (short for oriented complement reducible graphs…
The family $D(k,m)$ of graphs having an orientation such that for every vertex $v \in V(G)$ either (outdegree) $°^+(v) \le k$ or (indegree) $°^-(v) \le m$ have been investigated recently in several papers because of the role $D(k,m)$ plays in the efforts to estimate the maximum directed cut in digraphs and the minimum cover of digraphs by directed cuts. Results concerning the chromatic number of graphs in the family $D(k,m)$ have been obtained via the notion of $d$-degeneracy of graphs. In this paper we consider a far reaching generalization of the family $D(k,m)$, in a complementary form, int…
Beginning with the concepts of orientation for a 3-hypergraph and transitivity for an oriented 3-hypergraph, it is natural to study the class of comparability 3-hypergraphs (those that can be transitively oriented). In this work we show three different behaviors in respect to the relationship between the chromatic number and the clique number of a comparability 3-hypergraph, this is in contrast with the fact that a comparability simple graph is a perfect graph.
In this short note we observe that recent results of Abert and Hubai and of Csikvari and Frenkel about Benjamini--Schramm continuity of the holomorphic moments of the roots of the chromatic polynomial extend to the theory of dense graph sequences. We offer a number of problems and conjectures motivated by this observation.
Pushable homomorphisms and the pushable chromatic number $χ_p$ of oriented graphs were introduced by Klostermeyer and MacGillivray in 2004. They notably observed that, for any oriented graph $\overrightarrow{G}$, we have $χ_p(\overrightarrow{G}) \leq χ_o(\overrightarrow{G}) \leq 2 χ_p(\overrightarrow{G})$, where $χ_o(\overrightarrow{G})$ denotes the oriented chromatic number of $\overrightarrow{G}$. This stands as first general bounds on $χ_p$. This parameter was further studied in later works. This work is dedicated to the pushable chromatic number of oriented graphs fulfilling particular degr…
Suppose that two players take turns coloring the vertices of a given graph G with k colors. In each move the current player colors a vertex such that neighboring vertices get different colors. The first player wins this game if and only if at the end, all the vertices are colored. The game chromatic number $χ_g(G)$ is defined as the smallest k for which the first player has a winning strategy. Recently, Bohman, Frieze and Sudakov [Random Structures and Algorithms 2008] analysed the game chromatic number of random graphs and obtained lower and upper bounds of the same order of magnitude. In thi…
In this note we show every orientation of a connected cubic graph admits an oriented 8-colouring. This lowers the best-known upper bound for the chromatic number of the family of orientations of connected cubic graphs. We further show that every such oriented graph admits a 2-dipath 7-colouring. These results imply that either the chromatic number for the family of oriented connected cubic graphs equals the 2-dipath chromatic number or the long-standing conjecture of Sopena [Journal of Graph Theory 25:191-205 1997] regarding the chromatic number of orientations of connected cubic graphs is fal…
Let $G$ be a simple graph with maximum degree $Δ(G)$. A subgraph $H$ of $G$ is overfull if $|E(H)|>Δ(G)\lfloor |V(H)|/2 \rfloor$. Chetwynd and Hilton in 1985 conjectured that a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $Δ(G)>n/3$ has chromatic index $Δ(G)$ if and only if $G$ contains no overfull subgraph. Glock, Kühn and Osthus in 2016 showed that the conjecture is true for dense quasirandom graphs with even order, and they conjectured that the same should hold for such graphs with odd order. In this paper, we show that the conjecture of Glock, Kühn and Osthus is affirmative.
We study a very large family of graphs, the members of which comprise disjoint paths of cliques with extremal cliques identified. This broad characterisation naturally generalises those of various smaller families of graphs having well-known chromatic polynomials. We derive a relatively simple formula for an arbitrary member of the subfamily consisting of those graphs whose constituent clique-paths have at least one trivial extremal clique, and use this formula to show that the set of all non-integer chromatic roots of these graphs is closed under multiplication by natural numbers. A well-know…
The clique chromatic number of a graph is the minimum number of colors required to assign to its vertex set so that no inclusion maximal clique is monochromatic. McDiarmid, Mitsche and Prałat proved that the clique chromatic number of the binomial random graph $G\left(n,\frac{1}{2}\right) $ is at most $\left(\frac{1}{2}+o(1)\right)\log_2n$ with high probability. Alon and Krivelevich showed that it is greater than $\frac{1}{2000}\log_2n$ with high probability and suggested that the right constant in front of the logarithm is $\frac{1}{2}.$ We prove their conjecture and, beyond that, obtain a ti…
For an oriented graph $G$, let $f(G)$ denote the maximum chromatic number of an acyclic subgraph of $G$. Let $f(n)$ be the smallest integer such that every oriented graph $G$ with chromatic number larger than $f(n)$ has $f(G) > n$. Let $g(n)$ be the smallest integer such that every tournament $G$ with more than $g(n)$ vertices has $f(G) > n$. It is straightforward that $Ω(n) \le g(n) \le f(n) \le n^2$. This paper provides the first nontrivial lower and upper bounds for $g(n)$. In particular, it is proved that $\frac{1}{4}n^{8/7} \le g(n) \le n^2-(2-\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}})n+2$. It is also shown tha…
We investigate the local chromatic number of shift graphs and prove that it is close to their chromatic number. This implies that the gap between the directed local chromatic number of an oriented graph and the local chromatic number of the underlying undirected graph can be arbitrarily large. We also investigate the minimum possible directed local chromatic number of oriented versions of ``topologically t-chromatic'' graphs. We show that this minimum for large enough t-chromatic Schrijver graphs and t-chromatic generalized Mycielski graphs of appropriate parameters is the upper integer part o…
The local chromatic number is a coloring parameter defined as the minimum number of colors that should appear in the most colorful closed neighborhood of a vertex under any proper coloring of the graph. Its directed version is the same when we consider only outneighborhoods in a directed graph. For digraphs with all arcs being present in both directions the two values are obviously equal. Here we consider oriented graphs. We show the existence of a graph where the directed local chromatic number of all oriented versions of the graph is strictly less than the local chromatic number of the under…
The chromatic number $χ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is defined as the minimum number of colours required for a vertex colouring where no two adjacent vertices are coloured the same. The chromatic number of the dense random graph $G \sim G(n,p)$ where $p \in (0,1)$ is constant has been intensively studied since the 1970s, and a landmark result by Bollobás in 1987 first established the asymptotic value of $χ(G)$. Despite several improvements of this result, the exact value of $χ(G)$ remains open. In this paper, new upper and lower bounds for $χ(G)$ are established. These bounds are the first ones that ma…
An equitable colouring of a graph $G$ is a colouring of the vertices of $G$ so that no two adjacent vertices are coloured the same and, additionally, the colour class sizes differ by at most $1$. The equitable chromatic number $χ_=(G)$ is the minimum number of colours required for this. We study the equitable chromatic number of the dense random graph $G(n,m)$, where $m = \left\lfloor p {n \choose 2} \right \rfloor $ and $0<p< 0.86$ is constant. It is a well-known question of Bollobás whether for $p=1/2$ there is a function $f(n) \rightarrow \infty$ so that for any sequence of intervals of len…
Given a group $G$ of automorphisms of a graph $Γ$, the orbital chromatic polynomial $OP_{Γ,G}(x)$ is the polynomial whose value at a positive integer $k$ is the number of orbits of $G$ on proper $k$-colorings of $Γ.$ In \cite{Cameron}, Cameron et. al. explore the roots of orbital chromatic polynomials, and in particular prove that orbital chromatic roots are dense in $\mathbb{R}$, extending Thomassen's famous result (see \cite{Thomassen}) that chromatic roots are dense in $[\frac{32}{27},\infty)$. Cameron et al \cite{Cameron} further conjectured that the real roots of the orbital chromatic pol…
The independence number, coloring number and related parameters are investigated in the setting of oriented hypergraphs using the spectrum of the normalized Laplace operator. For the independence number, both an inertia--like bound and a ratio--like bound are shown. A Sandwich Theorem involving the clique number, the vector chromatic number and the coloring number is proved, as well as a lower bound for the vector chromatic number in terms of the smallest and the largest eigenvalue of the normalized Laplacian. In addition, spectral partition numbers are studied in relation to the coloring numb…
We introduce the fractional version of oriented coloring and initiate its study. We prove some basic results and study the parameter for directed cycles and sparse planar graphs. In particular, we show that for every $ε> 0$, there exists an integer $g_ε \geq 12$ such that any oriented planar graph having girth at least $g_ε$ has fractional oriented chromatic number at most $4+ε$. Whereas, it is known that there exists an oriented planar graph having girth at least $g_ε$ with oriented chromatic number equal to $5$. We also study the fractional oriented chromatic number of directed cycles and pr…
Duffy et al. [C. Duffy, G. MacGillivray, and É. Sopena, Oriented colourings of graphs with maximum degree three and four, Discrete Mathematics, 342(4), p. 959--974, 2019] recently considered the oriented chromatic number of connected oriented graphs with maximum degree $3$ and $4$, proving it is at most $9$ and $69$, respectively. In this paper, we improve these results by showing that the oriented chromatic number of non-necessarily connected oriented graphs with maximum degree $3$ (resp. $4$) is at most $9$ (resp. $26$). The bound of $26$ actually follows from a general result which determin…
The chromatic threshold $δ_χ(H,p)$ of a graph $H$ with respect to the random graph $G(n,p)$ is the infimum over $d > 0$ such that the following holds with high probability: the family of $H$-free graphs $G \subset G(n,p)$ with minimum degree $δ(G) \ge dpn$ has bounded chromatic number. The study of the parameter $δ_χ(H) := δ_χ(H,1)$ was initiated in 1973 by Erdős and Simonovits, and was recently determined for all graphs $H$. In this paper we show that $δ_χ(H,p) = δ_χ(H)$ for all fixed $p \in (0,1)$, but that typically $δ_χ(H,p) \ne δ_χ(H)$ if $p = o(1)$. We also make significant progress towa…
The Goldberg-Seymour Conjecture for $f$-colorings states that the $f$-chromatic index of a loopless multigraph is essentially determined by either a maximum degree or a maximum density parameter. We introduce an oriented version of $f$-colorings, where now each color class of the edge-coloring is required to be orientable in such a way that every vertex $v$ has indegree and outdegree at most some specified values $g(v)$ and $h(v)$. We prove that the associated $(g,h)$-oriented chromatic index satisfies a Goldberg-Seymour formula. We then present simple applications of this result to variations…
Based on a newly proposed spatial data model - spatial chromatic model (SCM), we developed a spatial coding scheme, called full-coded ordinary arranged chromatic diagram (full-OACD). Full-OACD is a type of spatial tessellation, where space is partitioned into a number of subspaces such as cells, edges, and vertexes. These subspaces are called spatial particles and assigned with unique codes - chromatic codes. The generation, structures, computations, and properties of full-OACD are introduced and relations between chromatic codes and particle spatial topology are investigated, indicating that …
Fix an oriented graph H, and let G be a graph with bounded clique number and very large chromatic number. If we somehow orient its edges, must there be an induced subdigraph isomorphic to H? Kierstead and Rodl raised this question for two specific kinds of digraph H: the three-edge path, with the first and last edges both directed towards the interior; and stars (with many edges directed out and many directed in). Aboulker et al subsequently conjectured that the answer is affirmative in both cases. We give affirmative answers to both questions.
The chromatic number of a digraph $D$ is the minimum number of acyclic subgraphs covering the vertex set of $D$. A tournament $H$ is a hero if every $H$-free tournament $T$ has chromatic number bounded by a function of $H$. Inspired by the celebrated Erdős--Hajnal conjecture, Berger et al. fully characterized the class of heroes in 2013. We extend this framework to dense digraphs: A digraph $H$ is a superhero if every $H$-free digraph $D$ has chromatic number bounded by a function of $H$ and $α(D)$, the independence number of the underlying graph of $D$. We prove here that a digraph is a super…
The clique chromatic number of a graph G=(V,E) is the minimum number of colors in a vertex coloring so that no maximal (with respect to containment) clique is monochromatic. We prove that the clique chromatic number of the binomial random graph G=G(n,1/2) is, with high probability, Ω(log n). This settles a problem of McDiarmid, Mitsche and Pralat who proved that it is O(log n) with high probability.
The packing chromatic number $χ$ $ρ$ (G) of an undirected (resp. oriented) graph G is the smallest integer k such that its set of vertices V (G) can be partitioned into k disjoint subsets V 1,..., V k, in such a way that every two distinct vertices in V i are at distance (resp. directed distance) greater than i in G for every i, 1 $\le$ i $\le$ k. The generalized theta graph $Θ$ {\ell} 1,...,{\ell}p consists in two end-vertices joined by p $\ge$ 2 internally vertex-disjoint paths with respective lengths 1 $\le$ {\ell} 1 $\le$ . . . $\le$ {\ell} p. We prove that the packing chromatic number of …
In this paper we prove that the dominator chromatic number of every oriented tree is invariant under reversal of orientation. In addition to this marquee result, we also prove the exact dominator chromatic number for arborescences and anti-arborescences as well as bounds on other orientations of oft studied tree topologies including generalized stars and caterpillars.
We consider the structure of $H$-free subgraphs of graphs with high minimal degree. We prove that for every $k>m$ there exists an $ε:=ε(k,m)>0$ so that the following holds. For every graph $H$ with chromatic number $k$ from which one can delete an edge and reduce the chromatic number, and for every graph $G$ on $n>n_0(H)$ vertices in which all degrees are at least $(1-ε)n$, any subgraph of $G$ which is $H$-free and contains the maximum number of copies of the complete graph $K_m$ is $(k-1)$-colorable. We also consider several extensions for the case of a general forbidden graph $H$ of a given …
The clique number of an undirected graph $G$ is the maximum order of a complete subgraph of $G$ and is a well-known lower bound for the chromatic number of $G$. Every proper $k$-coloring of $G$ may be viewed as a homomorphism (an edge-preserving vertex mapping) of $G$ to the complete graph of order $k$. By considering homomorphisms of oriented graphs (digraphs without cycles of length at most 2), we get a natural notion of (oriented) colorings and oriented chromatic number of oriented graphs. An oriented clique is then an oriented graph whose number of vertices and oriented chromatic number co…
The chromatic number $χ(G)$ of a graph $G$, that is, the smallest number of colors required to color the vertices of $G$ so that no two adjacent vertices are assigned the same color, is a classic and extensively studied parameter. Here we consider the case where $G$ is a random block graph, also known as the stochastic block model. The vertex set is partitioned into $k\in\mathbb{N}$ parts $V_1, \dotsc, V_k$, and for each $1 \le i\le j\le k$, two vertices $u \in V_i, v\in V_j$ are connected by an edge with some probability $p_{ij} \in (0,1)$ independently. Our main result pins down the typical …
For a graph $G$, the tree graph ${\cal T}_{G,t}$ has all tree subgraphs of $G$ with $t$ vertices as vertex set and two tree subgraphs are neighbors if they are edge-disjoint. Also, the $r^{th}$ cut number of $G$ is the minimum number of edges between parts of a partition of vertex set of $G$ into two parts such that each part has size at least $r$. We show that if $t=(1-o(1))n$ and $n$ is large enough, then for any dense graph $G$ with $n$ vertices, the chromatic number of the tree graph ${\cal T}_{G,t}$ is equal to the $(n-t+1)^{th}$ cut number of $G$. In particular, as a consequence, we prov…
The Vapnik-Červonenkis dimension is a complexity measure of set-systems, or hypergraphs. Its application to graphs is usually done by considering the sets of neighborhoods of the vertices (cf. Alon et al. (2006) and Chepoi, Estellon, and Vaxes (2007)), hence providing a set-system. But the graph structure is lost in the process. The aim of this paper is to introduce the notion of paired VC-dimension, a generalization of VC-dimension to set-systems endowed with a graph structure, hence a collection of pairs of subsets. The classical VC-theory is generally used in combinatorics to bound the tran…
In this paper, we present some properties on chromatic polynomials of hypergraphs which do not hold for chromatic polynomials of graphs. We first show that chromatic polynomials of hypergraphs have all integers as their zeros and contain dense real zeros in the set of real numbers. We then prove that for any multigraph $G=(V,E)$, the number of totally cyclic orientations of $G$ is equal to the value of $|P(H,-1)|$, where $P(H,λ)$ is the chromatic polynomial of a hypergraph $H$ which is constructed from $G$. Finally we show that the multiplicity of root "$0$" of $P(H,λ)$ may be at least $2$ for…
Let $k$ and $\ell$ be positive integers. A cycle with two blocks $c(k,\ell)$ is an oriented cycle which consists of two internally (vertex) disjoint directed paths of lengths at least $k$ and $\ell$, respectively, from a vertex to another one. A problem of Addario-Berry, Havet and Thomassé (2007) asked if, given positive integers $k$ and $\ell$ such that $k+\ell\ge 4$, any strongly connected digraph $D$ containing no $c(k,\ell)$ has chromatic number at most $k+\ell-1$. In this paper, we show that such digraph $D$ has chromatic number at most $O((k+\ell)^2)$, improving the previous upper bound …
If $G$ is a $k$-chromatic graph of order $n$ then it is known that the chromatic polynomial of $G$, $π(G,x)$, is at most $x(x-1)\cdots (x-(k-1))x^{n-k} = (x)_{\downarrow k}x^{n-k}$ for every $x\in \mathbb{N}$. We improve here this bound by showing that \[ π(G,x) \leq (x)_{\downarrow k} (x-1)^{Δ(G)-k+1} x^{n-1-Δ(G)}\] for every $x\in \mathbb{N},$ where $Δ(G)$ is the maximum degree of $G$. Secondly, we show that if $G$ is a connected $k$-chromatic graph of order $n$ where $k\geq 4$ then $π(G,x)$ is at most $(x)_{\downarrow k}(x-1)^{n-k}$ for every real $x\geq n-2+\left( {n \choose 2} -{k \choose…
I show that the zeros of the chromatic polynomials P_G(q) for the generalized theta graphs Θ^{(s,p)} are, taken together, dense in the whole complex plane with the possible exception of the disc |q-1| < 1. The same holds for their dichromatic polynomials (alias Tutte polynomials, alias Potts-model partition functions) Z_G(q,v) outside the disc |q+v| < |v|. An immediate corollary is that the chromatic zeros of not-necessarily-planar graphs are dense in the whole complex plane. The main technical tool in the proof of these results is the Beraha-Kahane-Weiss theorem on the limit sets of zeros for…
An $(m,n)$-mixed graph generalizes the notions of oriented graphs and edge-coloured graphs to a graph object with $m$ arc types and $n$ edge types. A simple colouring of such a graph is a non-trivial homomorphism to a reflexive target. We find that simple chromatic number of complete $(m,n)$-mixed graphs can be found in polynomial time. For planar graphs and $k$-trees ($k \geq 3$) we find that allowing the target to be reflexive does not lower the chromatic number of the respective family of $(m,n)$-mixed graphs. This implies that the search for universal targets for such families may be restr…
We present a general method for counting and packing Hamilton cycles in dense graphs and oriented graphs, based on permanent estimates. We utilize this approach to prove several extremal results. In particular, we show that every nearly $cn$-regular oriented graph on $n$ vertices with $c>3/8$ contains $(cn/e)^n(1+o(1))^n$ directed Hamilton cycles. This is an extension of a result of Cuckler, who settled an old conjecture of Thomassen about the number of Hamilton cycles in regular tournaments. We also prove that every graph $G$ on $n$ vertices of minimum degree at least $(1/2+\varepsilon)n$ con…
