In this paper we introduce several computational techniques for the study of moduli spaces of McKay quiver representations, making use of Groebner bases and toric geometry. For a finite abelian group G in GL(n,k), let Y_θbe the coherent component of the moduli space of θ-stable representations of the McKay quiver. Our two main results are as follows: we provide a simple description of the quiver representations corresponding to the torus orbits of Y_θ, and, in the case where Y_θequals Nakamura's G-Hilbert scheme, we present explicit equations for a cover by local coordinate charts. The latter theorem corrects the first result from [Nakamura]. The techniques introduced here allow experimentation in this subject and give concrete algorithmic tools to tackle further open questions. To illustrate this point, we present an example of a nonnormal G-Hilbert scheme, thereby answering a question raised by Nakamura.
For a finite abelian group G in GL(n,k), we describe the coherent component Y_theta of the moduli space M_theta of theta-stable McKay quiver representations. This is a not-necessarily-normal toric variety that admits a projective birational morphism to A^n/G obtained by variation of GIT quotient. As a special case, this gives a new construction of Nakamura's G-Hilbert scheme that avoids the (typically highly singular) Hilbert scheme of |G|-points in A^n. To conclude, we describe the toric fan of Y_theta and hence calculate the quiver representation corresponding to any point of Y_theta.
We construct a family of McKay quiver representations on the Danilov resolution of the 1/r(1,a,r - a) singularity. It follows that the resolution is the normalization of the coherent component of the moduli space of stable McKay quiver representations for a suitable stability condition. We describe explicitly the corresponding chamber of stability conditions for any coprime numbers r, a.
For a domestic finite group scheme, we give a direct description of the Euclidean components in its Auslander-Reiten quiver via the McKay-quiver of a finite linearly reductive subgroup scheme of $SL(2)$. Moreover, for a normal subgroup scheme $\mathcal{N}$ of a finite group scheme $\mathcal{G}$, we show that there is a connection between the ramification indices of the restriction morphism $\mathbb{P}(\mathcal{V}_{\mathcal{N}})\rightarrow\mathbb{P}(\mathcal{V}_{\mathcal{G}})$ between their projectivized cohomological support varieties and the ranks of the tubes in their Auslander-Reiten quiver…
For a given small binary dihedral group G we use the classification of G-graphs to describe explicitly G-Hilb(C^2) by giving an affine open cover of M(Q,R), the moduli space of stable quiver representations.
We give one formulation of an algorithm of Hanany and Vegh which takes a lattice polygon as an input and produces a set of isoradial dimer models. We study the case of lattice triangles in detail and discuss the relation with coamoebas following Feng, He, Kennaway and Vafa.
We present a method based on mutations of helices which leads to the construction (in the large volume limit) of exceptional coherent sheaves associated with the $(\sum_al_a=0)$ orbits in Gepner models. This is explicitly verified for a few examples including some cases where the ambient weighted projective space has singularities not inherited by the Calabi-Yau hypersurface. The method is based on two conjectures which lead to the analog,in the general case, of the Beilinson quiver for $\BP^n$. We discuss how one recovers the McKay quiver using the gauged linear sigma model (GLSM) near the or…
We consider the moduli space of the McKay quiver representations associated to the binary polyhedral groups G < SU(2) < SU(3). The derived category of such representations is equivalent to the derived category of coherent sheaves on the corresponding ADE resolution Y=G-Hilb(C^3). Following the ideas of Nagao and Nakajima, by making particular choices of parameters in the space of stability conditions on the equivalent derived categories above, we recover Donaldson-Thomas (DT), Pandharipande-Thomas (PT) and Szendroi (NCDT) moduli spaces. We also compute the Gromov-Witten (GW) partition function…
Kirillov has described a McKay correspondence for finite subgroups of PSL_{2}(C) that associates to each `height' function an affine Dynkin quiver together with a derived equivalence between equivariant sheaves on the projective line P^1 and representations of this quiver. The equivalences for different height functions are then related by reflection functors for quiver representations. The main goal of this paper is to develop an analogous story for the cotangent bundle of P^1. We show that each height function gives rise to a derived equivalence between equivariant sheaves on the cotangent b…
Let $Γ$ be a finite group acting linearly on $\C^n$, freely outside the origin. In previous work a generalisation of Kronheimer's construction of moduli of Hermitian-Yang-Mills bundles with certain invariance properties was given. This produced varieties $X_ζ$ (parameterised by $ζ\in\Q^N$) which are partial resolutions of $\C^n/Γ$. In this article, it is shown the same $X_ζ$ can be described as moduli spaces of representations of the McKay quiver associated to the action of $Γ$. It it shown that, for abelian groups, $X_ζ$ are toric varieties defined by convex polyhedra which are the solution s…
For a finite subgroup $Γ\subset \mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ and $n\geq 1$, we construct the (reduced scheme underlying the) Hilbert scheme of $n$ points on the Kleinian singularity $\mathbb{C}^2/Γ$ as a Nakajima quiver variety for the framed McKay quiver of $Γ$, taken at a specific non-generic stability parameter. We deduce that this Hilbert scheme is irreducible (a result previously due to Zheng), normal, and admits a unique symplectic resolution. More generally, we introduce a class of algebras obtained from the preprojective algebra of the framed McKay quiver by a process called cornering, a…
Let $G\subset SL_2(C)\subset SL_3(C)$ be a finite group. We compute motivic Pandharipande-Thomas and Donaldson-Thomas invariants of the crepant resolution $Hilb^G(C^3)$ of $C^3/G$ generalizing results of Gholampour and Jiang who computed numerical DT/PT invariants using localization techniques. Our formulas rely on the computation of motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants for a special class of quivers with potentials. We show that these motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants are closely related to the polynomials counting absolutely indecomposable quiver representations over finite fields introduce…
We give a new moduli construction of the minimal resolution of the singularity of type 1/r(1,a) by introducing the Special McKay quiver. To demonstrate that our construction trumps that of the G-Hilbert scheme, we show that the induced tautological line bundles freely generate the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on X by establishing a suitable derived equivalence. This gives a moduli construction of the Special McKay correspondence for abelian subgroups of GL(2).
We present a local computation of deformations of the tangent bundle for a resolved orbifold singularity C^d/G. These correspond to (0,2)-deformations of (2,2)-theories. A McKay-like correspondence is found predicting the dimension of the space of first-order deformations from simple calculations involving the group. This is confirmed in two dimensions using the Kronheimer-Nakajima quiver construction. In higher dimensions such a computation is subject to nontrivial worldsheet instanton corrections and some examples are given where this happens. However, we conjecture that the special crepant …
Noncommutative Donaldson-Thomas invariants for abelian orbifold singularities can be studied via the enumeration of instanton solutions in a six-dimensional noncommutative N=2 gauge theory; this construction is based on the generalized McKay correspondence and identifies the instanton counting with the counting of framed representations of a quiver which is naturally associated to the geometry of the singularity. We extend these constructions to compute BPS partition functions for higher-rank refined and motivic noncommutative Donaldson-Thomas invariants in the Coulomb branch in terms of gauge…
Lectures on resolutions à la Kronheimer of orbifold singularities, McKay quivers for Gauge Theories on D3 branes, and the issue of Ricci flat metrics on the resolved three-folds
We survey some features of equivariant instanton partition functions of topological gauge theories on four and six dimensional toric Kahler varieties, and their geometric and algebraic counterparts in the enumerative problem of counting holomorphic curves. We discuss the relations of instanton counting to representations of affine Lie algebras in the four-dimensional case, and to Donaldson-Thomas theory for ideal sheaves on Calabi-Yau threefolds. For resolutions of toric singularities, an algebraic structure induced by a quiver determines the instanton moduli space through the McKay correspond…
This article is based on my lecture notes from summer schools at the Universities of Utah (June 2007) and Warwick (September 2007). We provide an introduction to explicit methods in the study of moduli spaces of quiver representations and derived categories arising in toric geometry. The first main goal is to present the noncommutative geometric approach to semiprojective toric varieties via quivers. To achieve this, we use geometric invariant theory to construct both semiprojective toric varieties and moduli spaces of quiver representations. The second main goal builds on the first by present…
In a previous paper, a realization of the moduli space of framed torsion-free sheaves on Hirzebruch surfaces in terms of monads was given. We build upon that result to construct ADHM data for the Hilbert scheme of points of the total space of the line bundles $\mathcal O(-n)$ on $\mathbb P^1$, for $n \ge 1$, i.e., the resolutions of the singularities of type $\frac1n(1,1)$. Basically by implementing a version of the special McKay correspondence, this ADHM description is in turn used to realize these Hilbert schemes as irreducible connected components of quiver varieties. We obtain in this way …
We study wall-crossing phenomena in the McKay correspondence. Craw-Ishii show that every projective crepant resolution of a Gorenstein abelian quotient singularity arises as a moduli space of $θ$-stable representations of the McKay quiver. The stability condition $θ$ moves in a vector space with a chamber decomposition in which (some) wall-crossings capture flops between different crepant resolutions. We investigate where chambers for certain resolutions with Hilbert scheme-like moduli interpretations - iterated Hilbert schemes, or 'Hilb of Hilb' - sit relative to the principal chamber definin…
In this note we give an explicit geometric description of some of the Nakajima's quiver varieties. More precisely, we show that the $Γ$-equivariant Hilbert scheme $X^{Γ[n]}$ and the Hilbert scheme $X_Γ^{[n]}$ (where $X=\C^2$, $Γ\subset SL(\C^2)$ is a finite subgroup, and $X_Γ$ is a minimal resolution of $X/Γ$) are quiver varieties for the affine Dynkin graph, corresponding to $Γ$ via the McKay correspondence, the same dimension vectors, but different parameters $ζ$ (for earlier results in this direction see [4, 12, 13]). In particular, it follows that the varieties $X^{Γ[n]}$ and $X_Γ^{[n]}$ a…
This paper is based on a talk at the conference `The McKay correspondence, mutation and related topics' from July 2020. We provide an introduction to joint work of the author with Søren Gammelgaard, Ádám Gyenge and Balázs Szendrői that constructs the reduced scheme underlying the Hilbert scheme of $n$ points on an ADE singularity as a Nakajima quiver variety for a particular stability parameter. After drawing a parallel with two well-known constructions of the Hilbert scheme of $n$ points in $\mathbb{A}^2$, we summarise results of the author and Gwyn Bellamy before describing the main result b…
We study variations of tautological bundles on moduli spaces of representations of quivers with relations associated with dimer models under a change of stability parameters. We prove that if the tautological bundle induces a derived equivalence for some stability parameter, then the same holds for any generic stability parameter, and any projective crepant resolution can be obtained as the moduli space for some stability parameter. This result is used in 0905.0059 to prove the abelian McKay correspondence without using the result of math/9908027.
The three-dimensional McKay correspondence seeks to relate the geometry of crepant resolutions of Gorenstein $3$-fold quotient singularities $\mathbb{A}^3/G$ with the representation theory of the group $G$. The first crepant resolution studied in depth was the $G$-Hilbert scheme $G\text{-Hilb}\,\mathbb{A}^3$, which is also a moduli space of $θ$-stable representations of the McKay quiver associated to $G$. As the stability parameter $θ$ varies, we obtain many other crepant resolutions. In this paper we focus on the case where $G$ is abelian, and compute explicit inequalities for the chamber of …
To any finite group G in SL_2(C), and each `t' in the center of the group algebra of G, we associate a category, Coh_t. It is defined as a suitable quotient of the category of graded modules over (a graded version of) the deformed preprojective algebra introduced by Crawley-Boevey and Holland. The category Coh_t should be thought of as the category of coherent sheaves on a `noncommutative projective 2-space', equipped with a framing at the line at infinity. Our first result establishes an isomorphism between the moduli space of torsion free objects of Coh_t and the Nakajima quiver variety aris…
In this paper we consider the iterated G-equivariant Hilbert scheme G/N-Hilb(N-Hilb) and prove that G/N-Hilb(N-Hilb(C^3)) is a crepant resolution of C^3/G isomorphic to the moduli space of θ-stable representations of the McKay quiver for certain stability condition θ. We provide several explicit examples to illustrate this construction. We also consider the problem of when G/N-Hilb(N-Hilb) is isomorphic to G-Hilb showing the fact that these spaces are most of the times different.
Let $Γ$ be a finite group acting linearly on $\C^n$, freely outside the origin, and let $N$ be the number of conjugacy classes of $Γ$ minus one. A construction of Kronheimer of moduli spaces $X_ζ$ of translation-invariant $Γ$-equivariant instantons on $\C^2$ is generalised to $\C^n$. The moduli spaces $X_ζ$ depend on a parameter $ζ\in\Q^N$. The following results are proved: for $ζ=0$, $X_0$ is isomorphic to $\C^n/Γ$; if $ζ\neq 0$, the natural maps $X_ζ\to X_0$ are partial resolutions. The moduli $X_ζ$ are furthermore shown to admit Kähler metrics which are Asymptotically Locally Euclidean (ALE…
