For $α\in(0,π/2)$, let $(Σ)_α$ be the control system $\dot{x}=(F+uG)x$, where $x$ belongs to the two-dimensional unit sphere $S^2$, $u\in [-1,1]$ and $F,G$ are $3\times3$ skew-symmetric matrices generating rotations with perpendicular axes of respective length $\cos(α)$ and $\sin(α)$. In this paper, we study the time optimal synthesis (TOS) from the north pole $(0,0,1)^T$ associated to $(Σ)_α$, as the parameter $α$ tends to zero. We first prove that the TOS is characterized by a ``two-snakes'' configuration on the whole $S^2$, except for a neighborhood $U_α$ of the south pole $(0,0,-1)^T$ of diameter at most $Ø(α)$.
We next show that, inside $U_α$, the TOS depends on the relationship between $r(α):=π/2α-[π/2α]$ and$α$. More precisely, we characterize three main relationships, by considering sequences $(α_k)_{k\geq 0}$ satisfying $(a)$$r(α_k)=\bar{r}$; $(b)$ $r(α_k)=Cα_k$ and $(c)$ $r(α_k)=0$, where $\bar{r}\in (0,1)$ and $C>0$. In each case, we describe the TOS and provide, after a suitable rescaling, the limiting behavior, as $α$ tends to zero, of the corresponding TOS inside $U_α$.
A Deterministic affine quadratic optimal control problem is considered. Due to the nature of the problem, optimal controls exist under some very mild conditions. Further, it is shown that under some assumptions, the value function is differentiable and therefore satisfies the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation in the classical sense. Moreover, the so-called quasi-Riccati equation is derived and any optimal control admits a state feedback representation.
Optimization problems under affine constraints appear in various areas of machine learning. We consider the task of minimizing a smooth strongly convex function F(x) under the affine constraint Kx=b, with an oracle providing evaluations of the gradient of F and multiplications by K and its transpose. We provide lower bounds on the number of gradient computations and matrix multiplications to achieve a given accuracy. Then we propose an accelerated primal-dual algorithm achieving these lower bounds. Our algorithm is the first optimal algorithm for this class of problems.
In this article we study optimal control problems for systems that are affine with respect to some of the control variables and nonlinear in relation to the others. We consider finitely many equality and inequality constraints on the initial and final values of the state. We investigate singular optimal solutions for this class of problems, for which we obtain second order necessary and sufficient conditions for weak optimality in integral form. We also derive Goh pointwise necessary optimality conditions. We show an example to illustrate the results.
This paper studies a multi-agent system starting from a single agent dynamics which is a nonlinear affine control system. It analyze what happens when the number of agents goes to infinity using two different approaches, a granular mean-field one, trying to control only a finite number of agents while all the others goes to infinity, and a kinetic one, when in the limit the percentage of controlled agents is preserved. In both cases the optimal control problem starting from the solution for the finite dimensional one is stated.
In this paper, we show the optimality of a certain class of disturbance-affine control policies in the context of one-dimensional, constrained, multi-stage robust optimization. Our results cover the finite horizon case, with minimax (worst-case) objective, and convex state costs plus linear control costs. We develop a new proof methodology, which explores the relationship between the geometrical properties of the feasible set of solutions and the structure of the objective function. Apart from providing an elegant and conceptually simple proof technique, the approach also entails very fast alg…
We consider the time-optimal problem for a classical system of "double integrator" under the presence of a linear state constraint. By using the Maximum Principle of Dubovitskii and Milyutin, we determine a complete synthesis of optimal trajectories and qualitatively analyze the corresponding Lagrange multipliers.
In this article we propose a shooting algorithm for partially-affine optimal control problems, this is, systems in which the controls appear both linearly and nonlinearly in the dynamics. Since the shooting system generally has more equations than unknowns, the algorithm relies on the Gauss-Newton method. As a consequence, the convergence is locally quadratic provided that the derivative of the shooting function is injective and Lipschitz continuous at the optimal solution. We provide a proof of the convergence for the proposed algorithm using recently developed second order sufficient conditi…
This paper studies the problem for an affine hypersurface system to reach a polytopic target set starting from inside a polytope in the state space. We present an exhaustive solution which begins with a characterization of states which can reach the target by open-loop control and concludes with a systematic procedure to synthesize a feedback control. Our emphasis is on methods of subdivision, triangulation, and covers which explicitly account for the capabilities of the control system. In contrast with previous literature, the partition methods are guaranteed to yield a correct feedback synth…
We formulate an affine invariant implementation of the accelerated first-order algorithm in Nesterov (1983). Its complexity bound is proportional to an affine invariant regularity constant defined with respect to the Minkowski gauge of the feasible set. We extend these results to more general problems, optimizing Hölder smooth functions using $p$-uniformly convex prox terms, and derive an algorithm whose complexity better fits the geometry of the feasible set and adapts to both the best Hölder smoothness parameter and the best gradient Lipschitz constant. Finally, we detail matching complexity…
- In this paper we introduce a new method to solve fixed-delay optimal control problems which exploits numerical homotopy procedures. It is known that solving this kind of problems via indirect methods is complex and computationally demanding because their implementation is faced with two difficulties: the extremal equations are of mixed type, and besides, the shooting method has to be carefully initialized. Here, starting from the solution of the non-delayed version of the optimal control problem, the delay is introduced by numerical homotopy methods. Convergence results, which ensure the eff…
This paper considers the class of deterministic continuous-time optimal control problems (OCPs) with piecewise-affine (PWA) vector field, polynomial Lagrangian and semialgebraic input and state constraints. The OCP is first relaxed as an infinite-dimensional linear program (LP) over a space of occupation measures. This LP, a particular instance of the generalized moment problem, is then approached by an asymptotically converging hierarchy of linear matrix inequality (LMI) relaxations. The relaxed dual of the original LP returns a polynomial approximation of the value function that solves the H…
In this paper, first of all, we introduce the basic concepts of generating function in combinatorics and some combinatorial identities. In order to facilitate the understanding of m-order time optimal control synthesis function of discrete system (referred as m-order synthesis function), secondly, we introduce the derivation process and control ideas of 2nd-order synthesis function, and then deduce in detail the m-order synthesis function by means of generating function. By use of the m-order tracking-form synthesis function with filter factor, the methods of signal extraction and its predicti…
Affine policies (or control) are widely used as a solution approach in dynamic optimization where computing an optimal adjustable solution is usually intractable. While the worst case performance of affine policies can be significantly bad, the empirical performance is observed to be near-optimal for a large class of problem instances. For instance, in the two-stage dynamic robust optimization problem with linear covering constraints and uncertain right hand side, the worst-case approximation bound for affine policies is $O(\sqrt m)$ that is also tight (see Bertsimas and Goyal (2012)), whereas…
Global optimality analysis in sub-Riemannian problem on the Lie group SH(2) is considered. We cutout open dense domains in the preimage and in the image of the exponential mapping based on the description of Maxwell strata. We then prove that the exponential mapping restricted to these domains is a diffeomorphism. Based on the proof of diffeomorphism, the cut time, i.e., time of loss of global optimality is computed on SH(2). We also consider the global structure of the exponential mapping and obtain an explicit description of cut locus and optimal synthesis.
In this paper we consider an optimal control problem governed by a semilinear heat equation with bilinear control-state terms and subject to control and state constraints. The state constraints are of integral type, the integral being with respect to the space variable. The control is multidimensional. The cost functional is of a tracking type and contains a linear term in the control variables. We derive second order sufficient conditions relying on the Goh transform. The appendix provides an example illustrating the applicability of our results.
In this paper we consider a broad class of infinite horizon discrete-time optimal control models that involve a nonnegative cost function and an affine mapping in their dynamic programming equation. They include as special cases classical models such as stochastic undiscounted nonnegative cost problems, stochastic multiplicative cost problems, and risk-sensitive problems with exponential cost. We focus on the case where the state space is finite and the control space has some compactness properties. We assume that the affine mapping has a semicontractive character, whereby for some policies it…
Motivated by the ubiquity of control-affine systems in optimal control theory, we investigate the geometry of point-affine control systems with metric structures in dimensions two and three. We compute local isometric invariants for point-affine distributions of constant type with metric structures for systems with 2 states and 1 control and systems with 3 states and 1 control, and use Pontryagin's maximum principle to find geodesic trajectories for homogeneous examples. Even in these low dimensions, the behavior of these systems is surprisingly rich and varied.
This paper presents an inverse optimality method to solve the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation for a class of nonlinear problems for which the cost is quadratic and the dynamics are affine in the input. The method is inverse optimal because the running cost that renders the control input optimal is also explicitly determined. One special feature of this work, as compared to other methods in the literature, is the fact that the solution is obtained directly for the control input. The value function can also be obtained after one solves for the control input. Furthermore, a Lyapunov function tha…
This paper reviews several uses of harmonic information in the synthesis of mechanisms and shows that such information can be put to even greater use in this field. Results are presented for both single and multi-degree of freedom systems which support this claim. In both cases, the inclusion of harmonic information into the objective function aids the search to locate high quality solutions.
For a particular class of planar dynamics that are linear with respect to the control variable, we show that the feedback strategy ''null-singular null'' is minimizing the maximum of a coordinate over infinite horizon, under a L 1 budget constraint on the control. Moreover, we characterize the optimal cost as a function of the budget. The proof is based on an unusual use of the clock form. This result generalizes the one obtained formerly for the SIR epidemiological model to more general Kolmogorov dynamics, that we illustrate on other biological models.
We study the singularities for minimum time control-affine problems in 4D with 2D controls. After regularization, the problem boils down to the study of a bifurcation around some nilpotent equilibrium in the singular locus. We show that the extremal flow - thus, the exponential map - is smooth on a stratification, and therefore piece-wise smooth.

We study the regularity properties of the value function associated with an affine optimal control problem with quadratic cost plus a potential, for a fixed final time and initial point. Without assuming any condition on singular minimizers, we prove that the value function is continuous on an open and dense subset of the interior of the attainable set. As a byproduct we obtain that it is actually smooth on a possibly smaller set, still open and dense.
We consider in this paper the regularity problem for time-optimal trajectories of a single-input control-affine system on a n-dimensional manifold. We prove that, under generic conditions on the drift and the controlled vector field, any control u associated with an optimal trajectory is smooth out of a countable set of times. More precisely, there exists an integer K, only depending on the dimension n, such that the non-smoothness set of u is made of isolated points, accumulations of isolated points, and so on up to K-th order iterated accumulations.
This paper addresses the problem of control synthesis for nonlinear optimal control problems in the presence of state and input constraints. The presented approach relies upon transforming the given problem into an infinite-dimensional linear program over the space of measures. To generate approximations to this infinite-dimensional program, a sequence of Semi-Definite Programs (SDP)s is formulated in the instance of polynomial cost and dynamics with semi-algebraic state and bounded input constraints. A method to extract a polynomial control function from each SDP is also given. This paper pro…
We consider optimal distributed controller synthesis for an interconnected system subject to communication constraints, in linear quadratic settings. Motivated by the problem of finite heavy duty vehicle platooning, we study systems composed of interconnected subsystems over a chain graph. By decomposing the system into orthogonal modes, the cost function can be separated into individual components. Thereby, derivation of the optimal controllers in state-space follows immediately. The optimal controllers are evaluated under the practical setting of heavy duty vehicle platooning with communicat…
In this letter, we discuss the problem of optimal control for affine systems in the context of data-driven linear programming. First, we introduce a unified framework for the fixed point characterization of the value function, Q-function and relaxed Bellman operators. Then, in a model-free setting, we show how to synthesize and estimate Bellman inequalities from a small but sufficiently rich dataset. To guarantee exploration richness, we complete the extension of Willem's fundamental lemma to affine systems.
The purpose of this paper is to use the framework of Lie algebroids to study optimal control problems for affine connection control systems on Lie groups. In this context, the equations for critical trajectories of the problem are geometrically characterized as a Hamiltonian vector field.
We analyse an optimal control with the following features: the dynamical system is linear, and the dependence upon the control parameter is affine. More precisely we consider $\dot x_α(t) = (G + α(t) F)x_α(t)$, where $G$ and $F$ are $3\times 3$ matrices with some prescribed structure. In the case of constant control $α(t)\equiv α$, we show the existence of an optimal Perron eigenvalue with respect to varying $α$ under some assumptions. Next we investigate the Floquet eigenvalue problem associated to time-periodic controls $α(t)$. Finally we prove the existence of an eigenvalue (in the generali…
In this manuscript, we investigate symbolic abstractions that capture the behavior of piecewise-affine systems under input constraints and bounded external noise. This is accomplished by considering local affine feedback controllers that are jointly designed with the symbolic model, which ensures that an alternating simulation relation between the system and the abstraction holds. The resulting symbolic system is called a state-feedback abstraction and we show that it can be deterministic even when the original piecewise-affine system is unstable and non-deterministic. One benefit of this appr…
This paper considers online optimal control with affine constraints on the states and actions under linear dynamics with bounded random disturbances. The system dynamics and constraints are assumed to be known and time-invariant but the convex stage cost functions change adversarially. To solve this problem, we propose Online Gradient Descent with Buffer Zones (OGD-BZ). Theoretically, we show that OGD-BZ with proper parameters can guarantee the system to satisfy all the constraints despite any admissible disturbances. Further, we investigate the policy regret of OGD-BZ, which compares OGD-BZ's…
