We provide a simple construction of a Gerstenhaber-infinity algebra structure on a class of vertex algebras V, which lifts the strict Gerstenhaber algebra structure on BRST cohomology of V introduced by Lian and Zuckerman.
We outline two applications: the construction of a sheaf of Gerstenhaber-infinity algebras on a Calabi-Yau manifold extending the multiplication and bracket of functions and vector fields, and of a Lie-infinity structure related to the bracket of Courant.
This paper is concerned by the concept of algebra up to homotopy for a structure defined by two operations $.$ and [,]. An important example of such a structure is the Gerstenhaber algebra (commutatitve and Lie). The notion of Gerstenhaber algebra up to homotopy ($G_\infty$ algebra) is known. Here, we give a definition of pre-Gerstenhaber algebra (pre-commutative and pre-Lie) allowing the construction of $\hbox{pre}G_\infty$ algebra. Given a structure of pre-commutative (Zinbiel) and pre-Lie algebra and working over the corresponding dual operads, we will give an explicit construction of the a…
Using new configuration spaces, we give an explicit construction that extends Kontsevich's Lie-infinity quasi-isomorphism from polyvector fields to Hochschild cochains to a quasi-isomorphism of A-infinity algebras equipped with actions by homotopy derivations of the Lie algebra of polyvector fields. One may term this formality a formality of two-colored noncommutative Gerstenhaber homotopy algebras. In our result the action of polyvector fields by homotopy derivations of the wedge product on polyvector fields is not the adjoint action by the Schouten bracket, but a homotopy nontrivial and, in …
We produce a master identity {m}{m}=0 for homotopy Gerstenhaber algebras, as defined by Getzler and Jones and utilized by Kimura, Voronov, and Zuckerman in the context of topological conformal field theories. To this end, we introduce the notion of a "partitioned multilinear map" and explain the mechanics of composing such maps. In addition, many new examples of pre-Lie algebras and homotopy Gerstenhaber algebras are given.
We start by clarifying and extending the multibraces notation, which economically describes substitutions of multilinear maps and tensor products of vectors. We give definitions and examples of homotopy algebras, strongly homotopy Gerstenhaber and Gerstenhaber bracket algebras, and strongly homotopy Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras. We show that a homotopy algebra structure on a vector space can be lifted to its Hochschild complex, and also suggest an induction method to generate explicit strongly homotopy Gerstenhaber algebra maps on a topological vertex operator algebra (TVOA), their existence ha…
The solution of Deligne's conjecture on Hochschild cochains and the formality of the operad of little disks provide us with a natural homotopy Gerstenhaber algebra structure on the Hochschild cochains of an associative algebra. In this paper we construct a natural chain of quasi-isomorphisms of homotopy Gerstenhaber algebras between the Hochschild cochain complex C(A) of a regular commutative algebra A over a field of characteristic zero and the Gerstenhaber algebra of multiderivations of A. Unlike the original approach of the second author based on the computation of obstructions our method a…
We point out that for Yetter's deformational Hochschild complex of a monoidal functor between abelian monoidal categories the Gerstenhaber-Voronov type operations can be defined making it a strong homotopy Gerstenhaber algebra. This encodes deformation theory of monoidal functors in an analogical way as deformation theory of associative algebras is described by the strong homotopy Gerstenhaber algebra structure on the corresponding Hochschild cochains. We describe a quasi-classical limit of deformations of a symmetric monoidal functor in terms of Poisson type structure.
We prove that the BRST complex of a topological conformal field theory is a homotopy Gerstenhaber algebra, as conjectured by Lian and Zuckerman in 1992. We also suggest a refinement of the original conjecture for topological vertex operator algebras. We illustrate the usefulness of our main tools, operads and "string vertices" by obtaining new results on Vassiliev invariants of knots and double loop spaces.
$G_\infty$-structure is shown to exist on the deformation complex of a morphism of associative algebras. The main step of the construction is extension of a $B_\infty$-algebra by an associative algebra. Actions of $B_\infty$-algebras on associative and $B_\infty$-algebras are analyzed, extensions of $B_\infty$-algebras by associative and $B_\infty$-algebras, that they act upon, are constructed. The resulting $G_\infty$-algebra on the deformation complex of a morphism is shown to be quasi-isomorphic to the $G_\infty$-algebra on deformation complex of the corresponding diagram algebra.
The goal of this paper is to complete Getzler-Jones' proof of Deligne's Conjecture, thereby establishing an explicit relationship between the geometry of configurations of points in the plane and the Hochschild complex of an associative algebra. More concretely, it is shown that the $B_\infty$-operad, which is generated by multilinear operations known to act on the Hochschild complex, is a quotient of a certain operad associated to the compactified configuration spaces. Different notions of homotopy Gerstenhaber algebras are discussed: one of them is a $B_\infty$-algebra, another, called a hom…
We give the operadic formulation of (weak, strong) topological vertex algebras, which are variants of topological vertex operator algebras studied recently by Lian and Zuckerman. As an application, we obtain a conceptual and geometric construction of the Batalin-Vilkovisky algebraic structure (or the Gerstenhaber algebra structure) on the cohomology of a topological vertex algebra (or of a weak topological vertex algebra) by combining this operadic formulation with a theorem of Getzler (or of Cohen) which formulates Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras (or Gerstenhaber algebras) in terms of the homolog…
We define a BV-structure on the Hochschild-cohomology of a unital, associative algebra A with a symmetric, invariant and non-degenerate inner product. The induced Gerstenhaber algebra is the one described in Gerstenhaber's original paper on Hochschild-cohomology. We also prove the corresponding theorem in the homotopy case, namely we define the BV-structure on the Hochschild-cohomology of a unital A-infinity-algebra with a symmetric and non-degenerate infinity-inner product.
We extend M. Kontsevich's formality morphism to a homotopy braces morphism and to a homotopy Gerstenhaber morphism. We show that this morphism is homotopic to D. Tamarkin's formality morphism, obtained using formality of the little disks operad, if in the latter construction one uses the Alekseev-Torossian associator. Similar statements can also be shown in the "chains" case, i.e., on Hochschild homology instead of cohomology. This settles two well known and long standing problems in deformation quantization and unifies the several known graphical constructions of formality morphisms and homot…
We study in this article the concept of algebra up to homotopy for a structure defined by two operations . Important examples of such structure are those of pre-Gerstenhaber and pre-Poisson algebras. Given a structure of pre-commutative and pre-Lie algebra for two shifts of degree given by a and b, we define the structure of a pre-(a, b)-algebra and we give an explicit construction of the associated algebra up to homotopy.
We construct a Frobenius algebra structure on the Hochschild cochains of a group ring k[G] that extends the known structure of a <1, 2> topological quantum field theory on HH^0(k[G]; k[G]), k a field and G a finite group. The convolution product extends to the homotopy commutative Gerstenhaber product on cochains, the Frobenius coproduct extends to a coproduct on the chain complex for Hochschild homology, and there is a pairing on Hochschild cocahins satisfying Frobenius associativity. The pairing, however, degenerates on a certain subcomplex of Hochschild cochains. The cochain complex for gro…
We generalize the coupled braces {x}{y} of Gerstenhaber and {x}{y,...,z} of Getzler depicting compositions of multilinear maps in the Hochschild complex C(A)=Hom(TA;A) of a graded vector space A to expressions of the form {x,...,y}...{z,...,w} on the extended space Hom(TA;TA), and clarify many of the existing sign conventions that show up in the algebra of mathematical physics (namely in associative and Lie algebras, Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras, homotopy associative and homotopy Lie algebras). As a result, we introduce a new variant of the master identity for homotopy Lie algebras. We also com…
In this article, we show under what additional ingredients a comp (or opposite) module over an operad with multiplication can be given the structure of a cyclic k-module and how the underlying simplicial homology gives rise to a Batalin-Vilkovisky module over the cohomology of the operad. In particular, one obtains a generalised Lie derivative and a generalised (cyclic) cap product that obey a Cartan-Rinehart homotopy formula, and hence yield the structure of a noncommutative differential calculus in the sense of Nest, Tamarkin, Tsygan, and others. Examples include the calculi known for the Ho…
We show that the zeroth cohomology of M. Kontsevich's graph complex is isomorphic to the Grothendieck-Teichmueller Lie algebra grt_1. The map is explicitly described. This result has applications to deformation quantization and Duflo theory. We also compute the homotopy derivations of the Gerstenhaber operad. They are parameterized by grt_1, up to one class (or two, depending on the definitions). More generally, the homotopy derivations of the (non-unital) E_n operads may be expressed through the cohomology of a suitable graph complex. Our methods also give a second proof of a result of H. Fur…
We study cohomology theories of strongly homotopy algebras, namely $A_\infty, C_\infty$ and $L_\infty$-algebras and establish the Hodge decomposition of Hochschild and cyclic cohomology of $C_\infty$-algebras thus generalising previous work by Loday and Gerstenhaber-Schack. These results are then used to show that a $C_\infty$-algebra with an invariant inner product on its cohomology can be uniquely extended to a symplectic $C_\infty$-algebra (an $\infty$-generalisation of a commutative Frobenius algebra introduced by Kontsevich). As another application, we show that the `string topology' oper…
Brackets by another name, Whitehead or Samelson products, have a history parallel to that in Kosmann-Schwarzbach's From Schouten to Mackenzie: notes on brackets. Here I sketch the development of these and some of the other brackets and products and braces within homotopy theory and homological algebra and with applications to mathematical physics. In contrast to the brackets of Schouten, Nijenhuis and of Gerstenhaber, which involve a relation to another graded product, in homotopy theory many of the brackets are free standing binary operations. My path takes me through many twists and turns. T…
We study the deformation theory of morphisms of properads and props thereby extending to a non-linear framework Quillen's deformation theory for commutative rings. The associated chain complex is endowed with a Lie algebra up to homotopy structure. Its Maurer-Cartan elements correspond to deformed structures, which allows us to give a geometric interpretation of these results. To do so, we endow the category of prop(erad)s with a model category structure. We provide a complete study of models for prop(erad)s. A new effective method to make minimal models explicit, that extends Koszul duality t…
Using the theory of extensions of L-infinity algebras, we construct rational homotopy models for classifying spaces of fibrations, giving answers in terms of classical homological functors, namely the Chevalley-Eilenberg and Harrison cohomology. We also investigate the algebraic structure of the Chevalley-Eilenberg complexes of L-infinity algebras and show that they possess, along with the Gerstenhaber bracket, an L-infinity structure that is homotopy abelian.
This paper builds a general framework in which to study cohomology theories of strongly homotopy algebras, namely $A_\infty, C_\infty$ and $L_\infty$-algebras. This framework is based on noncommutative geometry as expounded by Connes and Kontsevich. The developed machinery is then used to establish a general form of Hodge decomposition of Hochschild and cyclic cohomology of $C_\infty$-algebras. This generalizes and puts in a conceptual framework previous work by Loday and Gerstenhaber-Schack.
We show that a graded commutative algebra A with any square zero odd differential operator is a natural generalization of a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra. While such an operator of order 2 defines a Gerstenhaber (Lie) algebra structure on A, an operator of an order higher than 2 (Koszul-Akman definition) leads to the structure of a strongly homotopy Lie algebra (L$_\infty$-algebra) on A. This allows us to give a definition of a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra up to homotopy. We also make a conjecture which is a generalization of the formality theorem of Kontsevich to the Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra lev…
By work of Farinati, Solberg, and Taillefer, it is known that the Hopf algebra cohomology of a quasi-triangular Hopf algebra, as a graded Lie algebra under the Gerstenhaber bracket, is abelian. Motivated by the question of whether this holds for nonquasi-triangular Hopf algebras, we show that Gerstenhaber brackets on Hopf algebra cohomology can be expressed via an arbitrary projective resolution using Volkov's homotopy liftings as generalized to some exact monoidal categories. This is a special case of our more general result that a bracket operation on cohomology is preserved under exact mono…
Consider the space of `long knots' in R^n, K_{n,1}. This is the space of knots as studied by V. Vassiliev. Based on previous work of the authors, it follows that the rational homology of K_{3,1} is free Gerstenhaber-Poisson algebra. A partial description of a basis is given here. In addition, the mod-p homology of this space is a `free, restricted Gerstenhaber-Poisson algebra'. Recursive application of this theorem allows us to deduce that there is p-torsion of all orders in the integral homology of K_{3,1}. This leads to some natural questions about the homotopy type of the space of long knot…
We start studying chiral algebras (as defined by A. Beilinson and V. Drinfeld) from the point of view of deformation theory. First, we define the notion of deformation of a chiral algebra on a smooth curve $X$ over a bundle of local artinian commutative algebras on $X$ equipped with a flat connection (whereas `usual' algebraic structures are deformed over a local artinian algebra) and we show that such deformations are controlled by a certain *-Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$. Then we try to contemplate a possible additional structure on $\mathfrak g$ and we conjecture that this structure up to homo…
Let $\g\_2$ be the Hochschild complex of cochains on $C^\infty(\RM^n)$ and $\g\_1$ be the space of multivector fields on $\RM^n$. In this paper we prove that given any $G\_\infty$-structure ({\rm i.e.} Gerstenhaber algebra up to homotopy structure) on $\g\_2$, and any $C\_\infty$-morphism $ϕ$ ({\rm i.e.} morphism of commutative, associative algebra up to homotopy) between $\g\_1$ and $\g\_2$, there exists a $G\_\infty$-morphism $Φ$ between $\g\_1$ and $\g\_2$ that restricts to $ϕ$. We also show that any $L\_\infty$-morphism ({\rm i.e.} morphism of Lie algebra up to homotopy), in particular the…
A first goal of this paper is to precisely relate the homotopy theories of bialgebras and $E_2$-algebras. For this, we construct a conservative and fully faithful $\infty$-functor from pointed conilpotent homotopy bialgebras to augmented $E_2$-algebras which consists in an appropriate "cobar" construction. Then we prove that the (derived) formal moduli problem of homotopy bialgebras structures on a bialgebra is equivalent to the (derived) formal moduli problem of $E_2$-algebra structures on this "cobar" construction. We show consequently that the $E_3$-algebra structure on the higher Hochschil…
The aim of this work is to construct a cohomology theory controlling the deformations of a general Drinfel'd algebra. The task is accomplished in three steps. The first step is the construction of a modified cobar complex adapted to a non-coassociative comultiplication. The following two steps each involve a new, highly non-trivial, construction. The first construction, essentially combinatorial, defines a differential graded Lie algebra structure on the simplicial chain complex of the associahedra. The second construction, of a more algebraic nature, is the definition of map of differential g…
We provide a recursive classification of meander graphs, showing that each meander is identified by a unique sequence of fundamental graph-theoretic moves. This sequence is called the meander's signature. The signature not only provides a fast algorithm for the computation of the index of a Lie algebra associated with the meander, but also allows for the speedy determination of the graph's plane homotopy type - a finer invariant than the index. The signature can be used to construct arbitrarily large sets of meanders, Frobenius and otherwise, of any given size and configuration. Making use of …
Semi-infinite forms on the moduli spaces of genus-zero Riemann surfaces with punctures and local coordinates are introduced. A partial operad for semi-infinite forms is constructed. Using semi-infinite forms and motivated by a partial suboperad of the partial operad for semi-infinite forms, topological vertex partial operads of type $k<0$ and strong topological vertex partial operads of type $k<0$ are constructed. It is proved that the category of (locally-)grading-restricted (strong) topological vertex operator algebras of type $k<0$ and the category of (weakly) meromorphic ${\Bbb Z}\times {\…
This article studies the algebraic structure of homology theories defined by a left Hopf algebroid U over a possibly noncommutative base algebra A, such as for example Hochschild, Lie algebroid (in particular Lie algebra and Poisson), or group and etale groupoid (co)homology. Explicit formulae for the canonical Gerstenhaber algebra structure on Ext_U(A,A) are given. The main technical result constructs a Lie derivative satisfying a generalised Cartan-Rinehart homotopy formula whose essence is that Tor^U(M,A) becomes for suitable right U-modules M a Batalin-Vilkovisky module over Ext_U(A,A), or…
We study the shifted analogue of the "Lie--Poisson" construction for $L_\infty$ algebroids and we prove that any $L_\infty$ algebroid naturally gives rise to shifted derived Poisson manifolds. We also investigate derived Poisson structures from a purely algebraic perspective and, in particular, we establish a homotopy transfer theorem for derived Poisson algebras. As an application, we prove that, given a Lie pair $(L,A)$, the space $\operatorname{tot}Ω^{\bullet}_A(Λ^\bullet(L/A))$ admits a degree $(+1)$ derived Poisson algebra structure with the wedge product as associative multiplication and…
This paper provides an explicit cofibrant resolution of the operad encoding Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras. Thus it defines the notion of homotopy Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras with the required homotopy properties. To define this resolution we extend the theory of Koszul duality to operads and properads that are defind by quadratic and linear relations. The operad encoding Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras is shown to be Koszul in this sense. This allows us to prove a Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt Theorem for such an operad and to give an explicit small quasi-free resolution for it. This particular resolution …
We define a quasiclassical limit of the Lian-Zuckerman homotopy BV algebra (quasiclassical LZ algebra) on the subcomplex, corresponding to "light modes", i.e. the elements of zero conformal weight, of the semi-infinite (BRST) cohomology complex of the Virasoro algebra associated with vertex operator algebra (VOA) with a formal parameter. We also construct a certain deformation of the BRST differential parametrized by a constant two-component tensor, such that it leads to the deformation of the $A_{\infty}$-subalgebra of the quasiclassical LZ algebra. Altogether this gives a functor the categor…
For a finitely-generated vertex operator algebra of central charge c, a locally convex topological completion is constructed. We construct on the completion a structure of an algebra over the operad of the c/2-th power of the determinant line bundle over the moduli space of genus-zero Riemann surfaces with ordered analytically parametrized boundary components. In particular, the completion is a module for the semi-group of the c/2-th power of the determinant line bundle over the moduli space of conformal equivalence classes of annuli with analytically parametrized boundary components. The resu…
The existing constructions of derived Lie and sh-Lie brackets involve multilinear maps that are used to define higher order differential operators. In this paper, we prove the equivalence of three different definitions of higher order operators. We then introduce a unifying theme for building derived brackets and show that two prevalent derived Lie bracket constructions are equivalent. Two basic methods of constructing derived strict sh-Lie brackets are also shown to be essentially the same. So far, each of these derived brackets is defined on an abelian subalgebra of a Lie algebra. We describ…
This is the third of a series of papers on a new equivariant cohomology that takes values in a vertex algebra, and contains and generalizes the classical equivariant cohomology of a manifold with a Lie group action a la H. Cartan. In this paper, we compute this cohomology for spheres and show that for any simple connected group G, there is a sphere with infinitely many actions of G which have distinct chiral equivariant cohomology, but identical classical equivariant cohomology. Unlike the classical case, the description of the chiral equivariant cohomology of spheres requires a substantial am…
