We establish that Hitchin's connection exist for any rigid holomorphic family of Kahler structures on any compact pre-quantizable symplectic manifold which satisfies certain simple topological constraints. Using Toeplitz operators we prove that Hitchin's connection induces a unique formal connection on smooth functions on the symplectic manifold. Parallel transport of this formal connection produces equivalences between the corresponding Berezin-Toeplitz deformation quantizations. - In the cases where the Hitchin connection is projectively flat, the formal connections will be flat and we get a symmetry-invariant formal quantization. If a certain cohomological condition is satisfied a global trivialization of this algebra bundle is constructed. As a corollary we get a symmetry-invariant deformation quantization.
Finally, these results are applied to the moduli space situation in which Hitchin's originally constructed his connection. First we get a proof that the Hitchin connection in this case is the same as the connection constructed by Axelrod, Della Pietra and Witten. Second we obtain in this way a mapping class group invariant formal quantization of the smooth symplectic leaves of the moduli space of flat SU(n)-connections on any compact surface.
In this paper, we will provide a review of the geometric construction, proposed by Witten, of the SU(n) quantum representations of the mapping class groups which are part of the Reshetikhin-Turaev TQFT for the quantum group U_q(sl(n, C)). In particular, we recall the differential geometric construction of Hitchin's projectively flat connection in the bundle over Teichmuller space obtained by push-forward of the determinant line bundle over the moduli space of rank n, fixed determinant, semi-stable bundles fibering over Teichmuller space. We recall the relation between the Hitchin connection an…
We establish the theory of Berezin-Toeplitz quantization on symplectic manifolds of bounded geometry. The quantum space of this quantization is the spectral subspace of the renormalized Bochner Laplacian associated with some interval near zero. We show that this quantization has the correct semiclassical limit.
We give a differential geometric construction of a connection in the bundle of quantum Hilbert spaces arising from half-form corrected geometric quantization of a prequantizable, symplectic manifold, endowed with a rigid, family of Kähler structures, all of which give vanishing first Dolbeault cohomology groups. In [And1] Andersen gave an explicit construction of Hitchin's connection in the non-corrected case using additional assumptions. Under the same assumptions we also give an explicit solution in terms of Ricci potentials. Morover we show that if these are carefully chosen the constructio…
In this paper we provide a review of asymptotic results of Toeplitz operators and their applications in TQFT. To do this we review the differential geometric construction of the Hitchin connection on a prequantizable compact symplectic manifold. We use asymptotic results relating the Hitchin connec- tion and Toeplitz operators, to, in the special case of the moduli space of flat SU(n)-connections on a surface, prove asymptotic faithfulness of the SU(n) quantum representations of the mapping class group. We then go on to re- view formal Hitchin connections and formal trivializations of these. W…
In this paper, we study quantization on a compact integral symplectic manifold $X$ with transversal real polarizations. In the case of complex polarizations, namely $X$ is Kähler equipped with transversal complex polarizations $T^{1, 0}X, T^{0, 1}X$, geometric quantization gives $H^0(X, L^{\otimes k})$'s. They are acted upon by $\mathcal{C}^\infty(X, \mathbb{C})$ via Toeplitz operators as $\hbar = \tfrac{1}{k} \to 0^+$, determining a deformation quantization $(\mathcal{C}^\infty(X, \mathbb{C})[[\hbar]], \star)$ of $X$.\par We investigate the real analogue to these, comparing deformation quanti…
This paper is about geometric quantization of the Hitchin system. We quantize a Kahler form on the Hitchin moduli space (which is half the first Kahler form defined by Hitchin) by considering the Quillen bundle as the prequantum line bundle and modifying the Quillen metric using the Higgs field so that the curvature is proportional to the Kahler form. We show that this Kahler form is integral and the Quillen bundle descends as a prequantum line bundle on the moduli space. It is holomorphic and hence one can take holomorphic square integrable sections as the Hilbert space of quantization of the…
In this paper, we construct a family of Berezin-Toeplitz type quantizations of a compact symplectic manifold. For this, we choose a Riemannian metric on the manifold such that the associated Bochner Laplacian has the same local model at each point (this is slightly more general than in almost-Kähler quantization). Then the spectrum of the Bochner Laplacian on high tensor powers $L^p$ of the prequantum line bundle $L$ asymptotically splits into clusters of size ${\mathcal O}(p^{3/4})$ around the points $pΛ$, where $Λ$ is an eigenvalue of the model operator (which can be naturally called a Landa…
For a real symmetric domain $G_{\mathbb R}/K_{\mathbb R}$, with complexification $G_{\mathbb C}/K_{\mathbb C}$, we introduce the concept of "star-restriction" (a real analogue of the "star-products" for quantization of Kähler manifolds) and give a geometric construction of the $G_{\mathbb R}$-invariant differential operators yielding its asymptotic expansion.
On a compact Kähler manifold $X$, Toeplitz operators determine a deformation quantization $(\operatorname{C}^\infty(X, \mathbb{C})[[\hbar]], \star)$ with separation of variables [10] with respect to transversal complex polarizations $T^{1, 0}X, T^{0, 1}X$ as $\hbar \to 0^+$ [15]. The analogous statement is proved for compact symplectic manifolds with transversal non-singular real polarizations [13]. In this paper, we establish the analogous result for transversal singular real polarizations on compact toric symplectic manifolds $X$. Due to toric singularities, half-form correction and localiza…
We survey recent results about the asymptotic expansion of Toeplitz operators and their kernels, as well as Berezin-Toeplitz quantization. We deal in particular with calculation of the first coefficients of these expansions.
We study the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization on Kaehler manifolds. We explain first how to compute various associated asymptotic expansions, then we compute explicitly the first terms of the expansion of the kernel of the Berezin-Toeplitz operators, and of the composition of two Berezin-Toeplitz operators. As application we estimate the norm of Donaldson's Q-operator.
We provide an algebraic framework for quantization of Hermitian metrics that are solutions of the Hitchin equation for Higgs bundles over a projective manifold. Using Geometric Invariant Theory, we introduce a notion of balanced metrics in this context. We show that balanced metrics converge at the quantum limit towards the solution of the Hitchin equation. We relate the existence of balanced metrics to the Gieseker stability of the Higgs bundle.
For arbitrary compact quantizable Kaehler manifolds it is shown how a natural formal deformation quantization (star product) can be obtained via Berezin-Toeplitz operators. Results on their semi-classical behaviour (their asymptotic expansion) due to Bordemann, Meinrenken and Schlichenmaier are used in an essential manner. It is shown that the star product is null on constants and fulfills parity. A trace is constructed and the relation to deformation quantization by geometric quantization is given.
Let $M$ be an arbitrary complex manifold and let $L$ be a Hermitian holomorphic line bundle over $M$. We introduce the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization of the open set of $M$ where the curvature on $L$ is non-degenerate. The quantum spaces are the spectral spaces corresponding to $[0,k^{-N}]$ ($N>1$ fixed), of the Kodaira Laplace operator acting on forms with values in tensor powers $L^k$. We establish the asymptotic expansion of associated Toeplitz operators and their composition as $k\to\infty$ and we define the corresponding star-product. If the Kodaira Laplace operator has a certain spectral …
We suggest a way to quantize, using Berezin-Toeplitz quantization, a compact hyperkahler manifold (equipped with a natural 3-plectic form), or a compact integral Kahler manifold of complex dimension n regarded as a (2n-1)-plectic manifold. We show that quantization has reasonable semiclassical properties.
For phase-space manifolds which are compact Kaehler manifolds relations between the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization and the quantization with the help of Berezin's coherent states and symbols are studied. First the results on the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization of arbitrary compact Kaehler manifolds due to Bordemann, Meinrenken and Schlichenmaier are recalled. It is shown that the covariant symbol map is adjoint to the Toeplitz map. The Berezin transform for compact Kaehler manifolds is discussed. (Talk presented at the XVII workshop on geometric methods in physics, Bialowieza, Poland, July 3 --Ju…
We study the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization using as quantum space the space of eigenstates of the renormalized Bochner Laplacian corresponding to eigenvalues localized near the origin on a symplectic manifold. We show that this quantization has the correct semiclassical behavior and construct the corresponding star-product.
We study the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization on symplectic manifolds making use of the full off-diagonal asymptotic expansion of the Bergman kernel. We give also a characterization of Toeplitz operators in terms of their asymptotic expansion. The semi-classical limit properties of the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization for non-compact manifolds and orbifolds are also established.
We give new methods for computing the coefficients of the asymptotic expansions of the kernel of Berezin-Toeplitz quantization obtained recently by Ma-Marinescu, and of the composition of two Berezin-Toeplitz quantizations. Our main tool is the stationary phase formula of Melin-Sjöstrand.
In this lecture results on the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization of arbitrary compact quantizable Kaehler manifolds are presented. These results are obtained in joint work with M. Bordemann and E. Meinrenken. The existence of the Berezin-Toeplitz deformation quantization is also covered. Recent results obtained in joint work with A. Karabegov on the asymptotic expansion of the Berezin transform for arbitrary quantizable compact Kaehler manifolds are explained. As an application the asymptotic expansion of the Fubini-Study fundamental form under the coherent state embedding is considered. Some comm…
Given a Hodge manifold, it is introduced a self-adjoint operator on the space of endomorphisms of the global holomorphic sections of the polarization line bundle. Such operator is shown to approximate the Laplace operator on functions when composed with Berezin-Toeplitz quantization map and its adjoint up to an error which tends to zero when taking higher powers of the polarization line bundle.
Invited lecture at the XIV-th workshop on geometric methods in physics, Bialowieza, Poland, July 9-15, 1995. In this lecture results are reviewed obtained by the author together with Martin Bordemann and Eckhard Meinrenken on the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization of compact Kaehler manifolds. Using global Toeplitz operators, approximation results for the quantum operators are shown. From them it follows that the quantum operators have the correct classical limit. A star product deformation of the Poisson algebra is constructed.
This talk reports on results on the deformation quantization (star products) and on approximative operator representations for quantizable compact K"ahler manifolds obtained via Berezin-Toeplitz operators. After choosing a holomorphic quantum line bundle the Berezin-Toeplitz operator associated to a differentiable function on the manifold is the operator defined by multiplying global holomorphic sections of the line bundle with this function and projecting the differentiable section back to the subspace of holomorphic sections. The results were obtained in (respectively based on) joint work wi…
We explore extensions to $\operatorname{SL}(n,\mathbb{C})$-Chern-Simons theory of some results obtained for $\operatorname{SU}(n)$-Chern-Simons theory via the asymptotic properties of the Hitchin connection and its relation to Toeplitz operators developed previously by the first named author. We define a formal Hitchin-Witten connection for the imaginary part $s$ of the quantum parameter $t = k+is$ and investigate the existence of a formal trivialisation. After reducing the problem to a recursive system of differential equations, we identify a cohomological obstruction to the existence of a so…
For a Kähler manifold $X$ equipped with a prequantum line bundle $L$, we give a geometric construction of a family of representations of the Berezin-Toeplitz deformation quantization algebra $(C^\infty(X)[[\hbar]],\star_{BT})$ parametrized by points $z_0 \in X$. The key idea is to use peak sections to suitably localize the Hilbert spaces $H^{0}\left(X,L^{\otimes m}\right)$ around $z_{0}$ in the large volume limit.
The Cauchy problem for the homogeneous (real and complex) Monge-Ampere equation (HRMA/HCMA) arises from the initial value problem for geodesics in the space of Kahler metrics. It is an ill-posed problem. We conjecture that, in its lifespan, the solution can be obtained by Toeplitz quantizing the Hamiltonian flow defined by the Cauchy data, analytically continuing the quantization, and then taking a kind of logarithmic classical limit. In this article, we prove that in the case of torus invariant metrics (where the HCMA reduces to the HRMA) this "quantum analytic continuation potential" coincid…
We use the theory of Berezin-Toeplitz operators of Ma and Marinescu to study the spaces of holomorphic sections of a prequantizing line bundle over compact Kähler manifolds under deformations of the complex structure. We show that the parallel transport in the induced vector bundle over the deformation space behaves like a Toeplitz operator, and compute its first coefficient. We then use this result to establish a semi-classical trace formula for the induced quantization of symplectic maps, and give an application to Witten's asymptotic expansion conjecture for the quantum representations of t…
A hyperkähler manifold $M$ has a family of induced complex structures indexed by a two-dimensional sphere $S^2 \cong \mathbb{CP}^1$. The twistor space of $M$ is a complex manifold $Tw(M)$ together with a natural holomorphic projection $Tw(M) \to \mathbb{CP}^1$, whose fiber over each point of $\mathbb{CP}^1$ is a copy of $M$ with the corresponding induced complex structure. We remove one point from this sphere (corresponding to one fiber in the twistor space),and for the case of $M = \mathbb{R}^{4n}$, $n\in\mathbb{N}$, equipped with the standard hyperkähler structure, we construct one quantizat…
We give a direct calculation of the curvature of the Hitchin connection, in geometric quantization on a symplectic manifold, using only differential geometric techniques. In particular, we establish that the curvature acts as a first-order operator on the quantum spaces. Projective flatness follows if the Kähler structures do not admit holomorphic vector fields. Following Witten, we define a complex variant of the Hitchin connection on the bundle of prequantum spaces. The curvature is essentially unchanged, so projective flatness holds in the same cases. Finally, the results are applied to qua…
We give a new construction of strict deformation quantization of symplectic manifolds equipped with a proper Lagrangian fiber bundle structure, whose representation spaces are the quantum Hilbert spaces obtained by geometric quantization. The construction can be regarded as a "lattice approximation of the correspondence between differential operators and principal symbols". We analyze the corresponding formal deformation quantization. We also investigate into relations between our construction and Berezin-Toeplitz deformation quantization.

We develop the theory of Berezin-Toeplitz operator on any compact symplectic prequantizable manifold from scratch. Our main inspiration is the Boutet de Monvel-Guillemin theory, that we simplify in several ways to obtain a concise exposition. A comparison with the spin-c Dirac quantization is also included.
We use the theory of Berezin-Toeplitz operators of Ma and Marinescu to study the quantum Hamiltonian dynamics associated with classical Hamiltonian flows over closed prequantized symplectic manifolds in the context of geometric quantization of Kostant and Souriau. We express the associated evolution operators via parallel transport in the quantum spaces over the induced path of almost complex structures, and we establish various semi-classical estimates. In particular, we establish a Gutzwiller trace formula for the Kostant-Souriau operator and compute explicitly the leading term. We then desc…
The standard (Berezin-Toeplitz) geometric quantization of a compact Kaehler manifold is restricted by integrality conditions. These restrictions can be circumvented by passing to the universal covering space, provided that the lift of the symplectic form is exact. I relate this construction to the Baum-Connes assembly map and prove that it gives a strict quantization of the manifold. I also propose a further generalization, classify the required structure, and provide a means of computing the resulting algebras. These constructions involve twisted group C*-algebras of the fundamental group whi…
In the first part of this paper we outline the constructions and properties of Fedosov star product and Berezin-Toeplitz star product. In the second part we outline the basic ideas and recent developments on Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture on the existence of Kähler metrics of constant scalar curvature. In the third part of the paper we outline recent results of both authors, and in particular show that the constant scalar curvature Kähler metric problem and the study of deformation quantization meet at the notion of trace (density) for star product. We formulate a cohomology formula for the inv…
Let X be a complex manifold with strongly pseudoconvex boundary M. If u is a defining function for M, then -log u is plurisubharmonic on a neighborhood of M in X, and the (real) 2-form s = i \del \delbar(-log u) is a symplectic structure on the complement of M in a neighborhood in X of M; it blows up along M. The Poisson structure obtained by inverting s extends smoothly across M and determines a contact structure on M which is the same as the one induced by the complex structure. When M is compact, the Poisson structure near M is completely determined up to isomorphism by the contact structur…
We generalize several recent results concerning the asymptotic expansions of Bergman kernels to the framework of geometric quantization and establish an asymptotic symplectic identification property. More precisely, we study the asymptotic expansion of the $G$-invariant Bergman kernel of the spin^c Dirac operator associated with high tensor powers of a positive line bundle on a symplectic manifold. We also develop a way to compute the coefficients of the expansion, and compute the first few of them, especially, we obtain the scalar curvature of the reduction space from the $G$-invariant Bergma…
