Let $\mathcal{V}$ be a mixed characteristic complete discrete valuation ring, $k$ its residual field, $\mathcal{P}$ a proper smooth formal scheme over $\mathcal{V}$, $P$ its special fiber, $T$ a divisor of $P$, $U:=P\setminus T$, $Y$ a smooth closed subscheme of $U$. We prove that the category of overconvergent $F$-isocrystals on $Y$ is equivalent to the category of overcoherent $F$-isocrystals on $Y$. More generally, we prove such an equivalence by gluing for any smooth variety $Y$ over $k$. Moreover, we check that overcoherent $F$-complexes of arithmetic $\mathcal{D}$-modules split in overconvergent $F$-isocrystals.
We prove the overholonomicity of overconvergent $F$-isocrystals over smooth varieties. This implies that the notions of overholonomicity and devissability in overconvergent $F$-isocrystals are equivalent. Then the overholonomicity is stable under tensor products. So, the overholonomicity gives a $p$-adic cohomology stable under Grothendieck's cohomological operations.
Let V be a complete discrete valuation ring of unequal characteristic with perfect residue field. Let X be smooth separated formal V-scheme, Z a strict normal crossing divisor of X and T a divisor of the special fiber of X. We study in this work isocrystals on the smooth log formal V-scheme associated to (X,Z) overconvergent along T.
In the framework of Berthelot's theory of arithmetic $\mathcal{D}$-modules, we prove that Berthelot's characteristic variety associated with a holonomic $\mathcal{D}$-modules endowed with a Frobenius structure has pure dimension. As an application, we get the lagrangianity of the characteristic variety of a log extendable overconvergent $F$-isocrystal.
Let X be a smooth variety over a field of characteristic p>0. We prove that the forgetful functor from the category of overconvergent F-isocrystals on X to the category of convergent F-isocrystals is fully faithful. The argument uses the quasi-unipotence theorem for overconvergent F-isocrystals (recently proved independently by Andre, Mebkhout, and the author; see math.AG/0110124), plus arguments of de Jong. In the process, we establish a theorem of Quillen-Suslin type (i.e., every finite projective module is free) over rings of overconvergent power series.
Let $k$ be a perfect field of positive characteristic and $Z$ an effective Cartier divisor in the projective line over $k$ with complement $U$. In this note, we establish some results about the formal deformation theory of overconvergent isocrystals on $U$ with fixed "local monodromy" along $Z$. En route, we show that a Hochschild cochain complex governs deformations of a module over an arbitrary associative algebra. We also relate this Hochschild cochain complex to a de Rham complex in order to understand the deformation theory of a differential module over a differential ring.
We show a Lefschetz theorem for irreducible overconvergent $F$-isocrystals on smooth varieties defined over a finite field. We derive several consequences from it.
We show that a semisimple overconvergent "absolutely unit-root" F-isocrystal on a geometrically connected smooth variety over a finite field becomes constant over a finite covering.
Let X be a smooth variety over a field of positive characteristic, and let E be an overconvergent isocrystal on X. We establish a criterion for the existence of a "canonical logarithmic extension" of E to a good compactification of X. In the process, we construct a category of overconvergent log-isocrystals and discuss its basic properties. In subsequent work, we will use these results to show that a canonical logarithmic extension always exists after pulling back E along a suitable cover of X.
Let $X$ be a smooth scheme over a finite field. It is conjectured that a convergent $F$-isocrystal on $X$ is overconvergent if its restriction to every curve contained in $X$ is overconvergent. Using the theory of étale and crystalline companions, we establish a weaker version of this criterion in which we also assume that the wild local monodromy of the restrictions to curves is trivialized by pullback along a single dominant morphism to $X$.
We introduce a valuation-theoretic approach to the problem of semistable reduction (i.e., existence of logarithmic extensions on suitable covers) of overconvergent isocrystals with Frobenius structure. The key tool is the quasicompactness of the Riemann-Zariski space associated to the function field of a variety.
Given a smooth affine curve X over a field k of positive characteristic, and an overconvergent F-isocrystal on X, we prove after replacing k by a finite purely inseparable extension, there exists a finite separable cover of X, the pullback of the isocrystal along which extends to a log-F-isocrystal on a smooth compactification. This resolves a weak form of the global version of a conjecture of Crew; the proof uses the local version of the conjecture, established separately by Andre, Mebkhout and the author.
In this paper, we establish a criterion for an overconvergent isocrystal on a smooth variety over a field of characteristic $p>0$ to extend logarithmically to its smooth compactification whose complement is a strict normal crossing divisor. This is a generalization of a result of Kedlaya, who treated the case of unipotent monodromy. Our result is regarded as a $p$-adic analogue of the theory of canonical extension of regular singular integrable connections on smooth varieties of characteristic 0.
We resolve the local semistable reduction problem for overconvergent F-isocrystals at monomial valuations (Abhyankar valuations of height 1 and residue transcendence degree 0). We first introduce a higher-dimensional analogue of the generic radius of convergence for a p-adic differential module, which obeys a convexity property. We then combine this convexity property with a form of the p-adic local monodromy theorem for so-called fake annuli.
The minimal slope conjecture, which was proposed by K.Kedlaya, asserts that two irreducible overconvergent $F$-isocrystals on a smooth variety are isomorphic to each other if both minimal slope constitutions of slope filtrations are isomorphic to each other. We affirmatively solve the minimal slope conjecture for overconvergent $F$-isocrystals on curves and for overconvergent $\bar{\mathbb Q}_p$-$F$-isocrystals on smooth varieties over finite fields.
In this paper, we prove a `cut-by-curves criterion' for an overconvergent isocrystal on a smooth variety over a field of characteristic $p>0$ to extend logarithmically to its smooth compactification whose complement is a strict normal crossing divisor, under certain assumption. This is a $p$-adic analogue of a version of cut-by-curves criterion for regular singuarity of an integrable connection on a smooth variety over a field of characteristic 0. In the course of the proof, we also prove a kind of cut-by-curves criteria on solvability, highest ramification break and exponent of $\nabla$-modul…
We complete our proof that given an overconvergent F-isocrystal on a variety over a field of positive characteristic, one can pull back along a suitable generically finite cover to obtain an isocrystal which extends, with logarithmic singularities and nilpotent residues, to some complete variety. We also establish an analogue for F-isocrystals overconvergent inside a partial compactification. By previous results, this reduces to solving a local problem in a neighborhood of a valuation of height 1 and residual transcendence degree 0. We do this by studying the variation of some numerical invari…
This article is the third one of a series of three articles devoted to direct images of isocrystals: here we consider overconvergent isocrystals with Frobenius structure. For a liftable proper smooth morphism we establish the overconvergence of direct images, owing to the first article and the existence of lifts of Frobenius. This result partially answers a conjecture of Berthelot on the overconvergence of direct images of overconvergent F-isocrystals under a proper smooth morphism.
Building on our previous papers (math.AG/0102173, math.AG/0105244, math.AG/0106192) we prove that every overconvergent F-isocrystal over k((t)) is quasi-unipotent (in the sense of Crew), for k a field of positive characteristic.
Berthelot's conjecture predicts that under a proper and smooth morphism of schemes in characteristic $p$, the higher direct images of an overconvergent $F$-isocrystal are overconvergent $F$-isocrystals. In this paper we prove that this is true for crystals up to isogeny. As an application we prove a Künneth formula for the crystalline fundamental group.
In the framework of Berthelot's theory of arithmetic $\mathcal{D}$-modules, we introduce the notion of arithmetic $\mathcal{D}$-modules having potentially-unipotent monodromy. For example, from Kedlaya's semistable reduction theorem, overconvergent isocrystals with Frobenius structure have potentially unipotent monodromy. We construct some coefficients stable under Grothendieck's six operation, containing overconvergent isocrystals with Frobenius structure and whose object have potentially unipotent monodromy. On the other hand, we introduce the notion of arithmetic $\mathcal{D}$-modules havin…
Let U be a smooth geometrically connected affine curve over $\mathbb{F}_p$ with compactification X. Following Dwork and Katz, a $p$-adic representation $ρ$ of $π_1(U)$ corresponds to an étale $F$-isocrystal. By work of Tsuzuki and Crew an $F$-isocrystal is overconvergent precisely when $ρ$ has finite monodromy at each $x \in X-U$. However, in practice most F-isocrystals arising geometrically are not overconvergent and have logarithmic growth at singularities (e.g. characters of the Igusa tower over a modular curve). We give a Galois-theoretic interpretation of these log growth $F$-isocrystals …
R. Crew conjectured that every overconvergent F-isocrystal over k((t)) (k a field of positive characteristic) is quasi-unipotent (equivalently, potentially semistable), and so has ``generic'' and ``special'' Newton polygons. It is easy to construct a Newton polygon for an arbitrary overconvergent F-crystal that coincides with the generic Newton polygon for potentially semistable crystals. We give an analogous construction for the special Newton polygon, by showing that the F-crystal can be trivialized over a large auxiliary ring. In a subsequent preprint, we use this construction to prove the …
We show that the arithmetic D-module associated to an overconvergent F-isocrystal over a smooth curve is holonomic. We first prove that unipotent F-isocrystals are holonomic D-module by using the fact that such F-isocrystals come from logarithmic F-isocrystals. We deduce the general case from the semi-stable theorem for F-isocrystals over curves of Matsuda-Trihan which relies on the p-adic monodromy theorem independently proved by André, Kedlaya and Mebkhout. The main result has already been proved by D. Caro.
We prove that rigid cohomology can be computed as the cohomology of a site analogous to the crystalline site. Berthelot designed rigid cohomology as a common generalization of crystalline and Monsky-Washnitzer cohomology. Unfortunately, unlike the former, the functoriality of the theory is not built-in. We defined somewhere else the "overconvergent site" which is functorially attached to an algebraic variety and proved that the category of modules of finite presentation on this ringed site is equivalent to the category of over- convergent isocrystals on the variety. We show here that their coh…
In this article we give a survey of the various forms of Berthelot's conjecture and some of the implications between them. By proving some comparison results between pushforwards of overconvergent isocrystals and those of arithmetic $\mathcal{D}$-modules, we manage to deduce some cases of the conjecture from Caro's results on the stability of overcoherence under pushforward via a smooth and proper morphism of varieties. In particular, we show that Ogus' convergent pushforward of an overconvergent $F$-isocrystal under a smooth and projective morphism is overconvergent.
Let $X_0$ be a smooth geometrically connected variety defined over a finite field $\mathbb F_q$ and let $\mathcal E_0^{\dagger}$ be an irreducible overconvergent $F$-isocrystal on $X_0$. We show that if a subobject of minimal slope of the associated convergent $F$-isocrystal $\mathcal E_0$ admits a non-zero morphism to $\mathcal O_{X_0}$ as a convergent isocrystal, then $\mathcal E_0^{\dagger}$ is isomorphic to $\mathcal O^{\dagger}_{X_0}$ as an overconvergent isocrystal. This proves a special case of a conjecture of Kedlaya. The key ingredient in the proof is the study of the monodromy group …
We prove an analogue for $p$-adic coefficients of the Deligne--Laumon theorem on local acyclicity for curves. That is, for an overconvergent $F$-isocrystal $E$ on a relative curve $f:U\rightarrow S$ admitting a good compactification, we show that the cohomology sheaves of $\mathbf{R}f_!E$ are overconvergent isocrystals if and only if $E$ has constant Swan conductor at infinity.
Let $V$ be a complete discrete valued ring of mixed characteristic $(0,p)$, $K$ its field of fractions, $k$ its residue field which is supposed to be perfect. Let $X$ be a separated $k$-scheme of finite type and $Y$ be a smooth open of $X$. We check that the equivalence of categories $sp_{(Y,X),+}$ (from the category of overconvergent isocrystals on $(Y,X)/K$ to that of overcoherent isocrystals on $(Y,X)/K$) commutes with tensor products. Next, in Berthelot's theory of arithmetic $\mathcal{D}$-modules, we prove the stability under tensor products of the devissability in overconvergent isocryst…
Using a local construction from a previous paper, we exhibit a numerical invariant, the differential Swan conductor, for an isocrystal on a variety over a perfect field of positive characteristic overconvergent along a boundary divisor; this leads to an analogous construction for certain p-adic and l-adic representations of the etale fundamental group of a variety. We then demonstrate some variational properties of this definition for overconvergent isocrystals, paying special attention to the case of surfaces.
In this paper, we prove that, if Deligne's "petites camarades conjecture" holds, then a Langlands type correspondence holds also for $p$-adic coefficients on a smooth curve over a finite field. We also prove that any overconvergent $F$-isocrystal of rank less than or equal to 2 on a smooth variety is $ι$-mixed.
This paper is a complement to the paper "On $p$-adic differential equations on semistable varieties" written by V. Di Proietto. Given an open variety over a DVR with semistable reduction, the author constructed in that paper a fully faithful algebraization functor from the category of certain log overconvergent isocrystals on the special fiber to the category of modules with regular integrable connection on the generic fiber. In this paper, we prove that, with convenable hypothesis, this functor is a tensor functor whose essential image is closed under extensions and subquotients. As a consequ…
Let $k$ be a perfect field of characteristic $p >0$, $U$ be a variety over $k$ and $F$ be a power of Frobenius. We construct the category of overholonomic arithmetical ($F$-)$\D$-modules over $U$ and the category of overholonomic ($F$-)complexes over $U$. We prove that overholonomic complexes over $U$ are stables by direct images, inverse images, extraordinary inverse images, extraordinary direct images, dual functors. Moreover, in the smooth case, we check that unit-root overconvergent $F$-isocrystals are overholonomic. In particular, they are holonomic.
Let $\mathcal{V}$ be a mixed characteristic complete discrete valuation ring, $\mathcal{P}$ a separated smooth formal scheme over $\mathcal{V}$, $P$ its special fiber, $X$ a smooth closed subscheme of $P$, $T$ a divisor in $P$ such that $T_X = T \cap X$ is a divisor in $X$ and $\smash{\D}^†_{\mathcal{P}}(\hdag T)$ the weak completion of the sheaf of differential operators on $\mathcal{P}$ with overconvergent singularities along $T$. We construct a fully faithful functor denoted by $ \sp_{X \hookrightarrow \mathcal{P},T,+}$ from the category of isocrystal on $X \setminus T_X$ overconvergent alo…
We prove that for an indecomposable convergent or overconvergent F-isocrystal on a smooth irreducible variety over a perfect field of characteristic p, the gap between consecutive slopes at the generic point cannot exceed 1. (This may be thought of as a crystalline analogue of the following consequence of Griffiths transversality: for an indecomposable variation of complex Hodge structures, there cannot be a gap between nonzero Hodge numbers.) As an application, we deduce a refinement of a result of V.Lafforgue on the slopes of Frobenius of an l-adic local system. We also prove similar stateme…
Let $k$ be a perfect field of characteristic $p>0$, $\mathcal{V}$ a complete discrete valuation ring with residue field $k$ and field of fractions $K$ of characteristic 0, and $S$ a separated $k$-scheme of finite type. When $S$ is smooth over $k$, we partially prove here a conjecture of Berthelot about the overconvergence of the higher direct images of the structure sheaf under a proper smooth morphism $f:X\to S$; when $k$ is perfect and $\mathcal{V}$ is tamely ramified such direct images are always convergent, not only for the structure sheaf but also for (almost) every convergent $F$-isocrys…
We prove that for any field k of characteristic p>0, any separated scheme X of finite type over k, and any overconvergent F-isocrystal E over X, the rigid cohomology H^i(X, E) and rigid cohomology with compact supports H^i_c(X,E) are finite dimensional vector spaces. We also establish Poincare duality and the Kunneth formula with coefficients. The arguments use a pushforward construction in relative dimension 1, based on a relative version of Crew's conjecture on the quasi-unipotence of certain p-adic differential equations.
Let $X \hookrightarrow \overline{X}$ be an open immersion of smooth varieties over a field of characteristic $p>0$ such that the complement is a simple normal crossing divisor and let $\overline{Z} \subseteq Z \subseteq \overline{X}$ be closed subschemes of codimension at least $2$. In this paper, we prove that the canonical restriction functor between the category of overconvergent $F$-isocrystals $F\text{-}{\rm Isoc}^{\dagger}(X,\overline{X}) \longrightarrow F\text{-}{\rm Isoc}^{\dagger}(X \setminus Z, \overline{X} \setminus \overline{Z})$ is an equivalence of categories. We also prove an ap…
