We consider two-dimensional Schrödinger operators in bounded domains. We analyze relations between nodal domains of eigenfunctions, spectral minimal partitions and spectral properties of the corresponding operator. The main results concern the existence and regularity of the minimal partitions associated with the nodal sets as the nodal domains of Courant-sharp eigenfunctions.
Recent work of the authors and their collaborators has uncovered fundamental connections between the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, the spectral flow of a certain family of self-adjoint operators, and the nodal deficiency of a Laplacian eigenfunction (or an analogous deficiency associated to a non-bipartite equipartition). Using a refined construction of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, we strengthen all of these results, in particular getting improved bounds on the nodal deficiency of degenerate eigenfunctions. Our framework is very general, allowing for non-bipartite partitions, non-simple eigenvalu…
We show that a recent spectral flow approach proposed by Berkolaiko-Cox-Marzuola for analyzing the nodal deficiency of the nodal partition associated to an eigenfunction can be extended to more general partitions. To be more precise, we work with spectral equipartitions that satisfy a pair compatible condition. Nodal partitions and spectral minimal partitions are examples of such partitions. Along the way, we discuss different approaches to the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators: via Aharonov-Bohm operators, via a double covering argument, and via a slitting of the domain.
The paper addresses the the number of nodal domains for eigenfunctions of Schrödinger operators with Dirichlet boundary conditions in bounded domains. In dimension one, the $n$th eigenfunction has $n$ nodal domains. The Courant Theorem claims that in any dimension, the number of nodal domains of the $n$th eigenfunction cannot exceed $n$. However, in dimensions higher than 1 the equality can hold for only finitely many eigenfunctions. Thus, a "nodal deficiency" arises. Examples are known of eigenfunctions with arbitrarily large index $n$ that have just two nodal domains. It was suggested in the…
We study oscillations in the eigenfunctions for a fractional Schrödinger operator on the real line. An argument in the spirit of Courant's nodal domain theorem applies to an associated local problem in the upper half plane and provides a bound on the number of nodal domains for the extensions of the eigenfunctions. Using the combinatorial properties of noncrossing partitions, we turn the nodal domain bound into an estimate for the number of sign changes in the eigenfunctions. We discuss applications in the periodic setting and the Steklov problem on planar domains.
Courant theorem provides an upper bound for the number of nodal domains of eigenfunctions of a wide class of Laplacian-type operators. In particular, it holds for generic eigenfunctions of quantum graph. The theorem stipulates that, after ordering the eigenvalues as a non decreasing sequence, the number of nodal domains $ν_n$ of the $n$-th eigenfunction satisfies $n\ge ν_n$. Here, we provide a new interpretation for the Courant nodal deficiency $d_n = n-ν_n$ in the case of quantum graphs. It equals the Morse index --- at a critical point --- of an energy functional on a suitably defined space …
The oscillation of a Laplacian eigenfunction gives a great deal of information about the manifold on which it is defined. This oscillation can be encoded in the nodal deficiency, an important geometric quantity that is notoriously hard to compute, or even estimate. Here we compare two recently obtained formulas for the nodal deficiency, one in terms of an energy functional on the space of equipartitions of the manifold, and the other in terms of a two-sided Dirichlet-to-Neumann map defined on the nodal set. We relate these two approaches by giving an explicit formula for the Hessian of the equ…
This survey is a short version of a chapter written by the first two authors in the book [A. Henrot, editor. Shape optimization and spectral theory. Berlin: De Gruyter, 2017] (where more details and references are given) but we have decided here to put more emphasis on the role of the Aharonov-Bohm operators which appear to be a useful tool coming from physics for understanding a problem motivated either by spectral geometry or dynamics of population. Similar questions appear also in Bose-Einstein theory. Finally some open problems which might be of interest are mentioned.
We study the nodal curves of low energy Dirichlet eigenfunctions in generalized curvilinear quadrilaterals. The techniques can be seen as a generalization of the tools developed by Grieser-Jerison in a series of works on convex planar domains and rectangles with one curved edge and a large aspect ratio. Here, we study the structure of the nodal curve in greater detail, in that we find precise bounds on its curvature, with uniform estimates up to the two points where it meets the domain at right angles, and show that many of our results hold for relatively small aspect ratios of the side length…
We consider spectral minimal partitions. Continuing work of the the present authors about problems for planar domains, [23], we focus on the sphere and obtain a sharp result for 3-partitions which is related to questions from harmonic analysis, in particular to a conjecture of Bishop.
Inverse nodal problem on diffusion operator is the problem of finding the potential functions and parameters in the boundary conditions by using nodal data. In particular, we solve the reconstruction and stability problems using nodal set of eigenfunctions. Furthermore, we show that the space of all potential functions q is homeomorphic to the partition set of all asymptotically equivalent nodal sequences induced by an equivalence relation. To show this stability which is known Lipschitz stability, we have to construct two metric spaces and a map Φ_{dif} between these spaces. We find that Φ_{d…
Inverse nodal problem on Dirac operator is finding the parameters in the boundary conditions, the number m and the potential function V in the Dirac equations by using a set of nodal points of a component of two component vector eigenfunctions as the given spectral data. In this study, we solve a stability problem using nodal set of vector eigenfunctions and show that space of all V functions is homeomorphic to the partition set of all space of asymptotically equivalent nodal sequences induced by an equivalence relation. Furthermore, we give a reconstruction formula for the potential function …
We study a minimal partition problem on the flat rectangular torus. We give a partial review of the existing literature, and present some numerical and theoretical work recently published elsewhere by V. Bonnaillie-No{ë}l and the author, with some improvements.
We study partitions of the rectangular two-dimensional flat torus of length 1 and width b into k domains, with b a parameter in (0, 1] and k an integer. We look for partitions which minimize the energy, definedas the largest first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian on the domains of the partition. We are inparticular interested in the way these minimal partitions change when b is varied. We present herean improvement, when k is odd, of the results on transition values of b established by B. Helffer andT. Hoffmann-Ostenhof (2014) and state a conjecture on those transition values. We establis…
Å. Pleijel (1956) has proved that in the case of the Laplacian with Dirichlet condition, the equality in the Courant nodal theorem (Courant sharp situation) can only be true for a finite number of eigenvalues when the dimension is $\geq 2$. Recently Polterovich extended the result to the Neumann problem in two dimensions in the case when the boundary is piecewise analytic. A question coming from the theory of spectral minimal partitions has motivated the analysis of the cases when one has equality in Courant's theorem. In this note, we identify the Courant sharp eigenvalues for the Dirichlet a…

We analyze spectral minimal $k$-partitions for the torus. In continuation with what we have obtained for thin annuli or thin strips on a cylinder (Neumann case), we get similar results for anisotropic tori.
We investigate the existence or non-existence of spectral minimal partitions of unbounded metric graphs, where the operator applied to each of the partition elements is a Schrödinger operator of the form $-Δ+ V$ with suitable (electric) potential $V$, which is taken as a fixed, underlying ``landscape'' on the whole graph. We show that there is a strong link between spectral minimal partitions and infimal partition energies on the one hand, and the infimum $Σ$ of the essential spectrum of the corresponding Schrödinger operator on the whole graph on the other. Namely, we show that for any $k\in\…
In this survey, we review the properties of minimal spectral $k$-partitions in the two-dimensional case and revisit their connections with Pleijel's Theorem. We focus on the large $k$ problem (and the hexagonal conjecture) in connection with two recent preprints by J. Bourgain and S. Steinerberger on the Pleijel Theorem. This leads us also to discuss some conjecture by I. Polterovich, in relation with square tilings. We also establish a Pleijel Theorem for Aharonov-Bohm Hamiltonians and deduce from it, via the magnetic characterization of the minimal partitions, some lower bound for the number…
Given a bounded open set $Ω$ in $ \mathbb R^n$ (or in a Riemannian manifold) and a partition of $Ω$ by $k$ open sets $D_j$, we consider the quantity $\max_j λ(D_j)$ where $λ(D_j)$ is the ground state energy of the Dirichlet realization of the Laplacian in $D_j$. If we denote by $ \mathfrak L_k(Ω)$ the infimum over all the $k$-partitions of $ \max_j λ(D_j)$, a minimal $k$-partition is then a partition which realizes the infimum. When $k=2$, we find the two nodal domains of a second eigenfunction, but the analysis of higher $k$'s is non trivial and quite interesting. In this paper, we give the p…
A Laplacian eigenfunction on a two-dimensional manifold dictates some natural partitions of the manifold; the most apparent one being the well studied nodal domain partition. An alternative partition is revealed by considering a set of distinguished gradient flow lines of the eigenfunction - those which are connected to saddle points. These give rise to Neumann domains. We establish complementary definitions for Neumann domains and Neumann lines and use basic Morse homology to prove their fundamental topological properties. We study the eigenfunction restrictions to these domains. Their zero s…
We study properties of spectral minimal partitions of metric graphs within the framework recently introduced in [Kennedy et al, Calc. Var. 60 (2021), 61]. We provide sharp lower and upper estimates for minimal partition energies in different classes of partitions; while the lower bounds are reminiscent of the classic isoperimetric inequalities for metric graphs, the upper bounds are more involved and mirror the combinatorial structure of the metric graph as well. Combining them, we deduce that these spectral minimal energies also satisfy a Weyl-type asymptotic law similar to the well-known one…
Given a bounded open set $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ (or a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary), and a partition of $Ω$ by $k$ open sets $ω_j$, we consider the quantity $\max_j λ(ω_j)$, where $λ(ω_j)$ is the ground state energy of the Dirichlet realization of the Laplacian in $ω_j$. We denote by $\mathfrak{L}_k(Ω)$ the infimum of $\max_j λ(ω_j)$ over all $k$-partitions. A minimal $k$-partition is a partition which realizes the infimum. The purpose of this paper is to revisit properties of nodal sets and to explore if they are also true for minimal partitions, or more generally for spectral equ…
The nodal set of a Laplacian eigenfunction forms a partition of the underlying manifold or graph. Another natural partition is based on the gradient vector field of the eigenfunction (on a manifold) or on the extremal points of the eigenfunction (on a graph). The submanifolds (or subgraphs) of this partition are called Neumann domains. This paper reviews the subject, as appears in a few recent works and points out some open questions and conjectures. The paper concerns both manifolds and metric graphs and the exposition allows for a comparison between the results obtained for each of them.
We introduce an abstract framework for the study of clustering in metric graphs: after suitably metrising the space of graph partitions, we restrict Laplacians to the clusters thus arising and use their spectral gaps to define several notions of partition energies; this is the graph counterpart of the well-known theory of spectral minimal partitions on planar domains and includes the setting in [Band \textit{et al}, Comm.\ Math.\ Phys.\ \textbf{311} (2012), 815--838] as a special case. We focus on the existence of optimisers for a large class of functionals defined on such partitions, but also…
The question of determining for which eigenvalues there exists an eigenfunction which has the same number of nodal domains as the label of the associated eigenvalue (Courant-sharp property) was motivated by the analysis of minimal spectral partitions. In previous works, many examples have been analyzed corresponding to squares, rectangles, disks, triangles, tori, \ldots . A natural toy model for further investigations is the Möbius strip, a non-orientable surface with Euler characteristic $0$, and particularly the "square" Möbius strip whose eigenvalues have higher multiplicities. In this case…
According to a well-know theorem by Sturm, a vibrating string is divided into exactly N nodal intervals by zeros of its N-th eigenfunction. Courant showed that one half of Sturm's theorem for the strings applies to the theory of membranes: N-th eigenfunction cannot have more than N domains. He also gave an example of a eigenfunction high in the spectrum with a minimal number of nodal domains, thus excluding the existence of a non-trivial lower bound. An analogue of Sturm's result for discretizations of the interval was discussed by Gantmacher and Krein. The discretization of an interval is a g…
