Equipping the probability space with a local Dirichlet form with square field operator $Γ$ and generator $A$ allows to improve Monte Carlo computations of expectations, densities, and conditional expectations, as soon as we are able to simulate a random variable $X$ together with $Γ[X]$ and $A[X]$. We give examples on the Wiener space, on the Poisson space and on the Monte Carlo space. When $X$ is real-valued we give an explicit formula yielding the density at the speed of the law of large numbers.

The regular subspaces of a Dirichlet form are the regular Dirichlet forms that inherit the original form but possess smaller domains. The two problems we are concerned are: (1) the existence of regular subspaces of a fixed Dirichlet form, (2) the characterization of the regular subspaces if exists. In this paper, we will first research the structure of regular subspaces for a fixed Dirichlet form. The main results indicate that the jumping and killing measures of each regular subspace are just equal to that of the original Dirichlet form. By using the independent coupling of Dirichlet forms an…
The aim of this paper is to study the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators in the context of Dirichlet forms and especially to figure out their probabilistic counterparts. Regarding irreducible Dirichlet forms, we will show that the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators for them are associated with the trace Dirichlet forms corresponding to the time changed processes on the boundary. Furthermore, the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators for perturbations of Dirichlet forms will be also explored. It turns out that for typical cases such a Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator corresponds to a quasi-regular positivity pre…
We prove the equivalence of the local property for an irreducible regular Dirichlet form and the Markov property for the Gaussian field associated with the Dirichlet form. Moreover we introduce a strong Markov property for Gaussian fields and present some sufficient conditions for this to hold.
Nakao's stochastic integrals for continuous additive functionals of zero energy are extended from the symmetric Dirichlet forms setting to the non-symmetric Dirichlet forms setting. Ito's formula in terms of the extended stochastic integrals is obtained.
We obtain a criterion for the quasi-regularity of generalized (non-sectorial) Dirichlet forms, which extends the result of P.J. Fitzsimmons on the quasi-regularity of (sectorial) semi-Dirichlet forms. Given the right (Markov) process associated to a semi-Dirichlet form, we present sufficient conditions for a second right process to be a standard one, having the same state space. The above mentioned quasi-regularity criterion is then an application. The conditions are expressed in terms of the associated capacities, nests of compacts, polar sets, and quasi-continuity. A second application is on…
This paper is concerned with a class of singular stable-like Dirichlet forms on $\R^d$, which are generated by $d$ independent copies of a one-dimensional symmetric $α$-stable process, and whose Lévy jump kernel measure is concentrated on the union of the coordinate axes. Explicit and sharp criteria for Poincaré inequality, super Poincaré inequality and weak Poincaré inequality of such singular Dirichlet forms are presented. When the reference measure is a product measure on $\R^d$, we also consider the entropy inequality for the associated Dirichlet forms, which is similar to the log-Sobolev …
It is shown in [10] that a regular and local Dirichlet form on an interval can be represented by so-called effective intervals with scale functions. This paper focuses on how to operate on effective intervals to obtain regular Dirichlet subspaces. The first result is a complete characterization for a Dirichlet form to be a regular subspace of such a Dirichlet form in terms of effective intervals. Then we give an explicit road map how to obtain all regular Dirichlet subspaces from a local and regular Dirichlet form on an interval, by a series of intuitive operations on the effective intervals i…
We introduce Riemannian-like structures associated with strong local Dirichlet forms on general state spaces. Such structures justify the principle that the pointwise index of the Dirichlet form represents the effective dimension of the virtual tangent space at each point. The concept of differentiations of functions is studied, and an application to stochastic analysis is presented.
Diffusion processes associated with semi-Dirichlet forms are studied in the paper. The main results are Fukushima's decomposition for the diffusions and a transformation formula for the corresponding martingale part of the decomposition. The results are applied to some concrete examples.
We establish transience criteria for symmetric non-local Dirichlet forms on $L^2({\mathbb R}^d)$ in terms of the coefficient growth rates at infinity. Applying these criteria, we find a necessary and sufficient condition for recurrence of Dirichlet forms of symmetric stable-like with unbounded/degenerate coefficients. This condition indicates that both of the coefficient growth rates of small and big jump parts affect the sample path properties of the associated symmetric jump processes.
We present recent advances on Dirichlet forms methods either to extend financial models beyond the usual stochastic calculus or to study stochastic models with less classical tools. In this spirit, we interpret the asymptotic error on the solution of an sde due to the Euler scheme in terms of a Dirichlet form on the Wiener space, what allows to propagate this error thanks to functional calculus.
We present a Fukushima type decomposition in the setting of general quasi-regular semi-Dirichlet forms. The decomposition is then employed to give a transformation formula for martingale additive functionals. Applications of the results to some concrete examples of semi-Dirichlet forms are given at the end of the paper. We discuss also the uniqueness question about Doob-Meyer decomposition on optional sets of interval type.
We show that any strictly quasi-regular generalized Dirichlet form that satisfies the mild structural condition D3 is associated to a Hunt process, and that the associated Hunt process can be approximated by a sequence of multivariate Poisson processes. This also gives a new proof for the existence of a Hunt process associated to a strictly quasi-regular generalized Dirichlet form that satisfies SD3 and extends all previous results.
In this paper, we shall consider the killing transform induced by a multiplicative functional on regular Dirichlet subspaces of a fixed Dirichlet form. Roughly speaking, a regular Dirichlet subspace is a closed subspace with Dirichlet and regular properties of fixed Dirichlet space. By using the killing transforms, our main results indicate that the big jump part of fixed Dirichlet form is not essential for discussing its regular Dirichlet subspaces. This fact is very similar to the status of killing measure when we consider the questions about regular Dirichlet subspaces in [6].
This paper is devoted to a fractional generalization of the Dirichlet distribution. The form of the multivariate distribution is derived assuming that the $n$ partitions of the interval $[0,W_n]$ are independent and identically distributed random variables following the generalized Mittag-Leffler distribution. The expected value and variance of the one-dimensional marginal are derived as well as the form of its probability density function. A related generalized Dirichlet distribution is studied that provides a reasonable approximation for some values of the parameters. The relation between th…
In this note, we present explicit conditions for symmetric gradient type Dirichlet forms to be recurrent. This type of Dirichlet form is typically strongly local and hence associated to a diffusion. We consider the one dimensional case and the multidimensional case, as well as the case with reflecting boundary conditions. Our main achievement is that the explicit results are obtained under quite weak assumptions on the closability, hence regularity of the underlying coefficients. Especially in dimension one, where a Hamza type condition is assumed, the construction of the sequence of functions…
We introduce the concept of index for regular Dirichlet forms by means of energy measures, and discuss its properties. In particular, it is proved that the index of strong local regular Dirichlet forms is identical with the martingale dimension of the associated diffusion processes. As an application, a class of self-similar fractals is taken up as an underlying space. We prove that first-order derivatives can be defined for functions in the domain of the Dirichlet forms and their total energies are represented as the square integrals of the derivatives.
Variational formulas for the Laplace transform of the exit time from an open set of a Hunt process generated by a regular lower bounded semi-Dirichlet form are established. While for symmetric Markov processes, variational formulas are derived for the exponential moments of the exit time. As applications, we provide some comparison theorems and quantitative relations of the exponential moments and Poincaré inequalities.
Let $U$ be an open set of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $m$ a positive Radon measure on $U$ such that ${\rm supp}[m]=U$, and $(P_t)_{t>0}$ a strongly continuous contraction sub-Markovian semigroup on $L^2(U;m)$. We investigate the structure of $(P_t)_{t>0}$. (i) Denote respectively by $(A,D(A))$ and $(\hat A,D(\hat A))$ the generator and the co-generator of $(P_t)_{t>0}$. Under the assumption that $C^{\infty}_0(U)\subset D(A)\cap D(\hat A)$, we give an explicit Lévy-Khintchine type representation of $A$ on $C^{\infty}_0(U)$. (ii) If $(P_t)_{t>0}$ is an analytic semigroup and hence is associated with a semi-…
In this paper, we shall first establish the theory of bivariate Revuz correspondence of positive additive functionals under a semi-Dirichlet form, which is associated with a right Markov process $X$ satisfying the sector condition but without duality. We extend most of the classical results about the bivariate Revuz measures under the duality assumptions to the case of semi-Dirichlet forms. As the main results of this paper, we prove that for any exact multiplicative functional $M$ of $X$, the subprocess $X^M$ of $X$ killed by $M$ also satisfies the sector condition and we then characterize th…
Convergence is proved for solutions of Dirichlet problems in regions with many small excluded sets (holes), as the holes become smaller and more numerous. The problem is formulated in the context of Markov processes associated with general Dirichlet forms, for random and nonrandom excluded sets. Sufficient conditions are given under which the sequence of entrance times or hitting times of the excluded sets converges in the stable topology. Convergence in the stable topology is a strengthened form of convergence in distribution, introduced by Renyi. Stable convergence of the entrance times impl…
We construct and analyze the Jacobi process - in mathematical biology referred to as Wright-Fisher diffusion - using a Dirichlet form. The corresponding Dirichlet space takes the form of a Sobolev space with different weights for the function itself and its derivative. Depending on the parameters we characterize the boundary behavior of the functions in the Dirichlet space, show density results, derive Sobolev embeddings and verify functional inequalities of Hardy type. Since the generator is a hypergeometric differential operator, many of the proofs can be carried out by explicit calculations…
After recalling basic features of the theory of symmetric quasi regular Dirichlet forms we show how by applying it to the stochastic quantization equation, with Gaussian space-time noise, one obtains weak solutions in a large invariant set. Subsequently, we discuss non symmetric quasi regular Dirichlet forms and show in particular by two simple examples in infinite dimensions that infinitesimal invariance, does not imply global invariance. We also present a simple example of non-Markov uniqueness in infinite dimensions.
Introducing the notion of extended Schrödinger spaces, we define the criticality and subcriticality of Schrödinger forms in the same manner as the recurrence and transience of Dirichlet forms, and give a sufficient condition for the subcriticality of Schrödinger forms in terms the bottom of spectrum. We define a subclass of Hardy potentials and prove that Schrödinger forms with potentials in this subclass are always critical, which leads us to optimal Hardy type inequality. We show that this definition of criticality and subcriticality is equivalent to that there exists an excessive function w…
We study the problem of existence, uniqueness and regularity of probabilistic solutions of the Cauchy problem for nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations involving operators corresponding to regular (nonsymmetric) Dirichlet forms. In proofs we combine the methods of backward doubly stochastic differential equations with those of probabilistic potential theory and Dirichlet forms.
We consider the obstacle problem with irregular barriers for semilinear elliptic equation involving measure data and operator corresponding to a general quasi-regular Dirichlet form. We prove existence and uniqueness of a solution as well as its representation as an envelope of a supersolution to some related partial differential equation. We also prove regularity results for the solution and the Lewy-Stampacchia inequality.
We prove that for any semi-Dirichlet form $(ε, D(ε))$ on a measurable Lusin space $E$ there exists a Lusin topology with the given $σ$-algebra as the Borel $σ$-algebra so that $(ε, D(ε))$ becomes quasi-regular. However one has to enlarge $E$ by a zero set. More generally a corresponding result for arbitrary $L^p$-resolvents is proven.
We use the language of errors to handle local Dirichlet forms with square field operator (cf [2]). Let us consider, under the hypotheses of Donsker theorem, a random walk converging weakly to a Brownian motion. If in addition the random walk is supposed to be erroneous, the convergence occurs in the sense of Dirichlet forms and induces the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck structure on the Wiener space. This quite natural result uses an extension of Donsker theorem to functions with quadratic growth. As an application we prove an invariance principle for the gradient of the maximum of the Brownian path compu…
We study diffusion processes driven by a Brownian motion with regular drift in a finite dimension setting. The drift has two components on different time scales, a fast conservative component and a slow dissipative component. Using the theory of Dirichlet form and Mosco-convergence we obtain simpler proofs, interpretations and new results of the averaging principle for such processes when we speed up the conservative component. As a result, one obtains an effective process with values in the space of connected level sets of the conserved quantities. The use of Dirichlet forms provides a simple…
This paper studies strongly local symmetric Dirichlet forms on general measure spaces. The underlying space is equipped with the intrinsic metric induced by the Dirichlet form, with respect to which the metric measure space does not necessarily satisfy volume-doubling property. Assuming Nash-type inequality, it is proved in this paper that outside a properly exceptional set, given a pointwise on-diagonal heat kernel upper bound in terms of the volume function, the comparable heat kernel lower bound also holds. The only assumption made on the volume growth rate is that it can be bounded by a co…
We consider the Dirichlet form given by \sE(f,f)&=&{1/2}\int_{\bR^d}\sum_{i,j=1}^d a_{ij}(x)\frac{\partial f(x)}{\partial x_i} \frac{\partial f(x)}{\partial x_j} dx &+&\int_{\bR^d\times \bR^d} (f(y)-f(x))^2J(x,y)dxdy. Under the assumption that the $\{a_{ij}\}$ are symmetric and uniformly elliptic and with suitable conditions on $J$, the nonlocal part, we obtain upper and lower bounds on the heat kernel of the Dirichlet form. We also prove a Harnack inequality and a regularity theorem for functions that are harmonic with respect to $\sE$.
The Dirichlet forms related to various infinite systems of interacting Brownian motions are studied. For a given random point field $ μ$, there exist two natural infinite-volume Dirichlet forms $ (\mathcal{E}^{\mathsf{upr}},\mathcal{D}^{\mathsf{upr}})$ and $(\mathcal{E}^{\mathsf{lwr}},\mathcal{D}^{\mathsf{lwr}})$ on $ L^2(\mathsf{S} ,μ) $ describing interacting Brownian motions each with unlabeled equilibrium state $ μ$. The former is a decreasing limit of a scheme of such finite-volume Dirichlet forms, and the latter is an increasing limit of another scheme of such finite-volume Dirichlet for…
The fourth moment theorem provides error bounds of the order $\sqrt{{\mathbb E}(F^4) - 3}$ in the central limit theorem for elements $F$ of Wiener chaos of any order such that ${\mathbb E}(F^2) = 1$. It was proved by Nourdin and Peccati (2009) using Stein's method and the Malliavin calculus. It was also proved by Azmoodeh, Campese and Poly (2014) using Stein's method and Dirichlet forms. This paper is an exposition on the connections between Stein's method and the Malliavin calculus and between Stein's method and Dirichlet forms, and on how these connections are exploited in proving the fourth…
In this paper, we shall explore the Mosco convergence on regular subspaces of one-dimensional irreducible and strongly local Dirichlet forms. We find that if the characteristic sets of regular subspaces are convergent, then their associated regular subspaces are convergent in sense of Mosco. Finally, we shall show some examples to illustrate that the Mosco convergence does not preserve any global properties of Dirichlet forms.
This survey paper is a structured concise summary of four of our recent papers on the stochastic regularity of diffusions that are associated to regular strongly local (but not necessarily symmetric) Dirichlet forms. Here by stochastic regularity we mean the question whether a diffusion associated to a Dirichlet form as mentioned above can be started and identified as a solution to an explicit stochastic differential equation for explicitly given starting points. Beyond the stochastic regularity, we consider its applications to strong existence and pathwise uniqueness of singular stochastic di…
We study superpositions and direct integrals of quadratic and Dirichlet forms. We show that each quasi-regular Dirichlet space over a probability space admits a unique representation as a direct integral of irreducible Dirichlet spaces, quasi-regular for the same underlying topology. The same holds for each quasi-regular strongly local Dirichlet space over a metrizable Luzin, Radon measure space, and admitting carré du champ operator. In this case, the representation is only projectively unique.
We discuss the main stages of development of the error calculation since the beginning of XIX-th century by insisting on what prefigures the use of Dirichlet forms and emphasizing the mathematical properties that make the use of Dirichlet forms more relevant and efficient. The purpose of the paper is mainly to clarify the concepts. We also indicate some possible future research.
We consider symmetric Dirichlet forms on locally compact and non-locally compact spaces and provide an elementary proof for their closability with respect to energy dominant measures. We also discuss how to use known potential theoretic results to furnish an alternative proof of this theorem.
The Dirichlet form is a generalization of the Laplacian, heavily used in the study of many diffusion-like processes. In this paper we present a nonstandard representation theorem for the Dirichlet form, showing that the usual Dirichlet form can be well-approximated by a hyperfinite sum. One of the main motivations for such a result is to provide a tool for directly translating results about Dirichlet forms on finite or countable state spaces to results on more general state spaces, without having to translate the details of the proofs. As an application, we prove a generalization of a well-kno…
This paper is devoted to characterizing the so-called order isomorphisms intertwining the $L^2$-semigroups of two Dirichlet forms. We first show that every unitary order isomorphism intertwining semigroups is the composition of $h$-transformation and quasi-homeomorphism. In addition, under the absolute continuity condition on Dirichlet forms, every (not necessarily unitary) order isomorphism intertwining semigroups is the composition of $h$-transformation, quasi-homeomorphism, and multiplication by a certain step function.
In the context of a metric measure Dirichlet space satisfying volume doubling and Poincaré inequality, we prove the parabolic Harnack inequality for weak solutions of the heat equation associated with local nonsymmetric bilinear forms. In particular, we show that these weak solutions are locally bounded.
The studies of Ramírez, Hino-Ramírez, and Ariyoshi-Hino showed that an integrated version of Varadhan's asymptotics holds for Markovian semigroups associated with arbitrary strong local symmetric Dirichlet forms. In this paper, we consider non-symmetric bilinear forms that are the sum of strong local symmetric Dirichlet forms and lower-order perturbed terms. We give sufficient conditions for the associated semigroups to have asymptotics of the same type.
We study relations and characterizations of various elliptic Harnack inequalities for symmetric non-local Dirichlet forms on metric measure spaces. We allow the scaling function be state-dependent and the state space possibly disconnected. Stability of elliptic Harnack inequalities is established under certain regularity conditions and implication for a priori Hölder regularity of harmonic functions is explored. New equivalent statements for parabolic Harnack inequalities of non-local Dirichlet forms are obtained in terms of elliptic Harnack inequalities.
We study ergodic decompositions of Dirichlet spaces under intertwining via unitary order isomorphisms. We show that the ergodic decomposition of a quasi-regular Dirichlet space is unique up to a unique isomorphism of the indexing space. Furthermore, every unitary order isomorphism intertwining two quasi-regular Dirichlet spaces is decomposable over their ergodic decompositions up to conjugation via an isomorphism of the corresponding indexing spaces.
This paper develops the use of Dirichlet forms to deliver proofs of optimal scaling results for Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms (specifically, Metropolis-Hastings random walk samplers) under regularity conditions which are substantially weaker than those required by the original approach (based on the use of infinitesimal generators). The Dirichlet form methods have the added advantage of providing an explicit construction of the underlying infinite-dimensional context. In particular, this enables us directly to establish weak convergence to the relevant infinite-dimensional distributions.
We consider a trace theorem for self-similar Dirichlet forms on self-similar sets to self-similar subsets. In particular, we characterize the trace of the domains of Dirichlet forms on the Sierpinski gaskets and the Sierpinski carpets to their boundaries, where boundaries mean the triangles and rectangles which confine gaskets and carpets. As an application, we construct diffusion processes on a collection of fractals called fractal fields, which behave as the appropriate fractal diffusion within each fractal component of the field.
We construct the Dirichlet form associated with the dynamical $Φ^4_3$ model obtained in [Hai14, CC13] and [MW16]. This Dirichlet form on cylinder functions is identified as a classical gradient bilinear form. As a consequence, this classical gradient bilinear form is closable and then by a well-known result its closure is also a quasi-regular Dirichlet form, which means that there exists another (Markov) diffusion process, which also admits the $Φ^4_3$ field measure as an invariant (even symmetrizing) measure.
With direct and simple proofs, we establish Poincaré type inequalities (including Poincaré inequalities, weak Poincaré inequalities and super Poincaré inequalities), entropy inequalities and Beckner-type inequalities for non-local Dirichlet forms. The proofs are efficient for non-local Dirichlet forms with general jump kernel, and also work for $L^p (p>1)$ settings. Our results yield a new sufficient condition for fractional Poincaré inequalities, which were recently studied in \cite{MRS,Gre}. To our knowledge this is the first result providing entropy inequalities and Beckner-type inequalitie…
Perturbations of super Poincaré and weak Poincaré inequalities for Lévy type Dirichlet forms are studied. When the range of jumps is finite our results are natural extensions to the corresponding ones derived earlier for diffusion processes; and we show that the study for the situation with infinite range of jumps is essentially different. Some examples are presented to illustrate the optimality of our results.
Starting with a regular symmetric Dirichlet form on a locally compact separable metric space $X$, our paper studies elements of vector analysis, $L_p$-spaces of vector fields and related Sobolev spaces. These tools are then employed to obtain existence and uniqueness results for some quasilinear elliptic PDE and SPDE in variational form on $X$ by standard methods. For many of our results locality is not assumed, but most interesting applications involve local regular Dirichlet forms on fractal spaces such as nested fractals and Sierpinski carpets.
Formal Laplace operators are analyzed for a large class of resistance networks with vertex weights. The graphs are completed with respect to the minimal resistance path metric. Compactness and a novel connectivity hypothesis for the completed graphs play an essential role. A version of the Dirichlet problem is solved. Self adjoint Laplace operators and the probability semigroups they generate are constructed using reflecting and absorbing conditions on subsets of the graph boundary.
Using the standard tools of Daniell-Stone integrals, Stone-Čech compactification and Gelfand transform, we discuss how any Dirichlet form defined on a measurable space can be transformed into a regular Dirichlet form on a locally compact space. This implies existence, on the Stone-Čech compactification, of the associated Hunt process. As an application, we show that for any separable resistance form in the sense of Kigami there exists an associated Markov process.
Let $V\in C^2(\R^d)$ such that $μ_V(\d x):= \e^{-V(x)}\,\d x$ is a probability measure, and let $å\in (0,2)$. Explicit criteria are presented for the $å$-stable-like Dirichlet form $$\E_{å,V}(f,f):= \int_{\R^d\times\R^d} \ff{|f(x)-f(y)|^2}{|x-y|^{d+α}}\,\d y\,\e^{-V(x)}\,\d x$$ to satisfy Poincaré-type (i.e., Poincaré, weak Poincaré and super Poincaré) inequalities. As applications, sharp functional inequalities are derived for the Dirichlet form with $V$ having some typical growths. Finally, the main result of \cite{MRS} on the Poincaré inequality is strengthened
