We consider a trace theorem for self-similar Dirichlet forms on self-similar sets to self-similar subsets. In particular, we characterize the trace of the domains of Dirichlet forms on the Sierpinski gaskets and the Sierpinski carpets to their boundaries, where boundaries mean the triangles and rectangles which confine gaskets and carpets. As an application, we construct diffusion processes on a collection of fractals called fractal fields, which behave as the appropriate fractal diffusion within each fractal component of the field.
We introduce the concept of index for regular Dirichlet forms by means of energy measures, and discuss its properties. In particular, it is proved that the index of strong local regular Dirichlet forms is identical with the martingale dimension of the associated diffusion processes. As an application, a class of self-similar fractals is taken up as an underlying space. We prove that first-order derivatives can be defined for functions in the domain of the Dirichlet forms and their total energies are represented as the square integrals of the derivatives.
This paper proves the strong parabolic Harnack inequality for local weak solutions to the heat equation associated with time-dependent (nonsymmetric) bilinear forms. The underlying metric measure Dirichlet space is assumed to satisfy the volume doubling condition, the strong Poincaré inequality, and a cutoff Sobolev inequality. The metric is not required to be geodesic. Further results include a weighted Poincaré inequality, as well as upper and lower bounds for non-symmetric heat kernels.
We prove a scale-invariant boundary Harnack principle for inner uni- form domains in metric measure Dirichlet spaces. We assume that the Dirichlet form is symmetric, strongly local, regular, and that the volume doubling property and two-sided sub-Gaussian heat kernel bounds are satisfied. We make no assumptions on the pseudo-metric induced by the Dirichlet form, hence the underlying space can be a fractal space.
We study upper estimates of the martingale dimension $d_m$ of diffusion processes associated with strong local Dirichlet forms. By applying a general strategy to self-similar Dirichlet forms on self-similar fractals, we prove that $d_m=1$ for natural diffusions on post-critically finite self-similar sets and that $d_m$ is dominated by the spectral dimension for the Brownian motion on Sierpinski carpets.
In this paper we explore two constructions of the same family of metric measure spaces. The first construction was introduced by Laakso in 2000 where he used it as an example that Poincaré inequalities can hold on spaces of arbitrary Hausdorff dimension. This was proved using minimal generalized upper gradients. Following Cheeger's work these upper gradients can be used to define a Sobolev space. We show that this leads to a Dirichlet form. The second construction was introduced by Barlow and Evans in 2004 as a way of producing exotic spaces along with Markov processes from simpler spaces and …
In this paper we identify the domain of the Dirichlet form associated with the Brownian motion on simple nested fractals with an integral Lipschitz space. This result generalizes such an identification on the Sierpiński gasket, carried on by Jonsson.
Starting with a regular symmetric Dirichlet form on a locally compact separable metric space $X$, our paper studies elements of vector analysis, $L_p$-spaces of vector fields and related Sobolev spaces. These tools are then employed to obtain existence and uniqueness results for some quasilinear elliptic PDE and SPDE in variational form on $X$ by standard methods. For many of our results locality is not assumed, but most interesting applications involve local regular Dirichlet forms on fractal spaces such as nested fractals and Sierpinski carpets.
We consider finite energy and $L^2$ differential forms associated with strongly local regular Dirichlet forms on compact connected topologically one-dimensional spaces. We introduce notions of local exactness and local harmonicity and prove the Hodge decomposition, which in our context says that the orthogonal complement to the space of all exact 1-forms coincides with the closed span of all locally harmonic 1-forms. Then we introduce a related Hodge Laplacian and define a notion harmonicity for finite energy 1-forms. As as corollary, under a certain capacity-separation assumption, we prove th…
With a view towards Riemannian or sub-Riemannian manifolds, RCD metric spaces and specially fractals, this paper makes a step further in the development of a theory of heat semigroup based $(1,p)$ Sobolev spaces in the general framework of Dirichlet spaces. Under suitable assumptions that are verified in a variety of settings, the tools developed by D. Bakry, T. Coulhon, M. Ledoux and L. Saloff-Coste in the paper "Sobolev inequalities in disguise" allow us to obtain the whole family of Gagliardo-Nirenberg and Trudinger-Moser inequalities with optimal exponents. The latter depend not only on th…
We discuss the spectral asymptotics of some open subsets of the real line with random fractal boundary and of a random fractal, the continuum random tree. In the case of open subsets with random fractal boundary we establish the existence of the second order term in the asymptotics almost surely and then determine when there will be a central limit theorem which captures the fluctuations around this limit. We will show examples from a class of random fractals generated from Dirichlet distributions as this is a relatively simple setting in which there are sets where there will and will not be a…
We confirm, in a more general framework, a part of the conjecture posed by R. Bell, C.-W. Ho, and R. S. Strichartz [Energy measures of harmonic functions on the Sierpiński gasket, Indiana Univ. Math. J. 63 (2014), 831--868] on the distribution of energy measures for the canonical Dirichlet form on the two-dimensional standard Sierpinski gasket.
Given strong local Dirichlet forms and $\mathbb{R}^N$-valued functions on a metrizable space, we introduce the concepts of geodesic distance and intrinsic distance on the basis of these objects. They are defined in a geometric and an analytic way, respectively, and they are closely related with each other in some classical situations. In this paper, we study the relations of these distances when the underlying space has a fractal structure. In particular, we prove their coincidence for a class of self-similar fractals.
The main purpose of this paper is to explore the structure of regular subspaces of 1-dim Brownian motion. As outlined in \cite{FMG} every such regular subspace can be characterized by a measure-dense set $G$. When $G$ is open, $F=G^c$ is the boundary of $G$ and, before leaving $G$, the diffusion associated with the regular subspace is nothing but Brownian motion. Their traces on $F$ still inherit the inclusion relation, in other words, the trace Dirichlet form of regular subspace on $F$ is still a regular subspace of trace Dirichlet form of one-dimensional Brownian motion on $F$. Moreover we h…
The $4N$ carpets are a class of infinitely ramified self-similar fractals with a large group of symmetries. For a $4N$-carpet $F$, let $\{F_n\}_{n \geq 0}$ be the natural decreasing sequence of compact pre-fractal approximations with $\cap_nF_n=F$. On each $F_n$, let $\mathcal{E}(u, v) = \int_{F_N} \nabla u \cdot \nabla v \, dx$ be the classical Dirichlet form and $u_n$ be the unique harmonic function on $F_n$ satisfying a mixed boundary value problem corresponding to assigning a constant potential between two specific subsets of the boundary. Using a method introduced by Barlow and Bass (1990…
With a view toward fractal spaces, by using a Korevaar-Schoen space approach, we introduce the class of bounded variation (BV) functions in a general framework of strongly local Dirichlet spaces with a heat kernel satisfying sub-Gaussian estimates. Under a weak Bakry-Émery curvature type condition, which is new in this setting, this BV class is identified with a heat semigroup based Besov class. As a consequence of this identification, properties of BV functions and associated BV measures are studied in detail. In particular, we prove co-area formulas, global $L^1$ Sobolev embeddings and isope…
We present a concrete family of fractals, which we call the (two-dimensional) thin scale irregular Sierpiński gaskets and each of which is equipped with a canonical strongly local regular symmetric Dirichlet form. We prove that any fractal $K$ in this family satisfies the full off-diagonal heat kernel estimates with some space-time scale function $Ψ_{K}$ and the singularity of the associated energy measures with respect to the canonical volume measure (uniform distribution) on $K$, and also that the decay rate of $r^{-2}Ψ_{K}(r)$ to $0$ as $r\downarrow 0$ can be made arbitrarily slow by suitab…
The aim of this paper is to study the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators in the context of Dirichlet forms and especially to figure out their probabilistic counterparts. Regarding irreducible Dirichlet forms, we will show that the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators for them are associated with the trace Dirichlet forms corresponding to the time changed processes on the boundary. Furthermore, the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators for perturbations of Dirichlet forms will be also explored. It turns out that for typical cases such a Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator corresponds to a quasi-regular positivity pre…
We give two-term small-time approximation for the trace of the Dirichlet heat kernel of bounded smooth domain for unimodal Lévy processes satisfying the weak scaling conditions.
We consider a metric measure space with a local regular Dirichlet form. We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for upper heat kernel bounds with sub-diffusive space-time exponent to hold. This characterization is stable under rough isometries, that is it is preserved under bounded perturbations of the Dirichlet form. Further, we give a criterion for stochastic completeness in terms of a Sobolev inequality for cutoff functions. As an example we show that this criterion applies to an anomalous diffusion on a geodesically incomplete fractal space, where the well-established criterion in…
We use the random self-similarity of the continuum random tree to show that it is homeomorphic to a post-critically finite self-similar fractal equipped with a random self-similar metric. As an application we determine the mean and almost-sure leading order behaviour of the high frequency asymptotics of the eigenvalue counting function associated with the natural Dirichlet form on the continuum random tree. We also obtain short time asymptotics for the trace of the heat semigroup and the annealed on-diagonal heat kernel associated with this Dirichlet form.
We prove an optimal extension and trace theorem for Sobolev spaces of nonlocal operators. The extension is given by a suitable Poisson integral and solves the corresponding nonlocal Dirichlet problem. We give a Douglas-type formula for the quadratic form of the Poisson extension.
