In this paper we produce infinitely many examples of set-theoretic complete intersection monomial curves in $\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$, starting with a set-theoretic complete intersection monomial curve in $\mathbb{P}^{n}$ . In most of the cases our results cannot be obtained through semigroup gluing technique and we can tell apart explicitly which cases are new.
Let $C({\bf n})$ be a complete intersection monomial curve in the 4-dimensional affine space. In this paper we study the complete intersection property of the monomial curve $C({\bf n}+w{\bf v})$, where $w>0$ is an integer and ${\bf v} \in \mathbb{N}^{4}$. Also we investigate the Cohen-Macaulayness of the tangent cone of $C({\bf n}+w{\bf v})$.
Many algebras are expected to have the Weak Lefschetz property though this is often very difficult to establish. We illustrate the subtlety of the problem by studying monomial and some closely related ideals. Our results exemplify the intriguing dependence of the property on the characteristic of the ground field, and on arithmetic properties of the exponent vectors of the monomials.
We study the complete intersection property of monomial curves in the family $Γ_{å+ \jj} = {(t^{a_0 + j}, t^{a_1+j},..., t^{a_n + j}) ~ | ~ j \geq 0, ~ a_0 < a_1 <...< a_n}$. We prove that if $Γ_{å+\jj}$ is a complete intersection for $j \gg0$, then $Γ_{å+\jj+\underline{a_n}}$ is a complete intersection for $j \gg 0$. This proves a conjecture of Herzog and Srinivasan on eventual periodicity of Betti numbers of semigroup rings under translations for complete intersections. We also show that if $Γ_{å+\jj}$ is a complete intersection for $j \gg 0$, then $Γ_å$ is a complete intersection. We also c…
Let $k$ be a commutative ring and $S=k[x_0, \ldots, x_n]$ be a polynomial ring over $k$ with a monomial order. For any monomial ideal $J$, there exists an affine $k$-scheme of finite type, called Gröbner scheme, which parameterizes all homogeneous reduced Gröbner bases in $S$ whose initial ideal is $J$. Here we functorially show that the Gröbner scheme is a locally closed subscheme of the Hilbert scheme if $J$ is a saturated ideal. In the process, we also show that the Gröbner scheme consists of complete intersections if $J$ defines a complete intersection.
It is well known that for a subscheme $V$ in ${\mathbb P}^{n}$ of codimension two, the conditions (1) $V$ is ACM, and (2) $V$ is "licci" (i.e. $V$ is in the liaison class of a complete intersection) are equivalent. In higher codimension, (2) implies (1) but the converse is false. For Gorenstein liaison the analog of (2) is: $(2')$ $V$ is "glicci" (i.e. $V$ is in the Gorenstein liaison class of a complete intersection). It remains true that $(2')$ implies (1) but now the converse is an important open question. Previously the authors described a mechanism for lifting monomial ideals to reduced u…
We deform monomial space curves in order to construct examples of set-theoretical complete intersection space curve singularities. As a by-product we describe an inverse to Herzog's construction of minimal generators of non-complete intersection numerical semigroups with three generators.
Let R be monomial sub-algebra of $k[x_1,...,x_N]$ generated by square free monomials of degree two. This paper addresses the following question: when is R a complete intersection? For such a k-algebra we can associate a graph G whose vertices are $x_1,...,x_N$ and whose edges are $\{(x_i, x_j) | x_i x_j \in R \}$. Conversely, for any graph G with vertices $\{x_1,...,x_N\}$ we define the {\it edge algebra associated with G} as the sub-algebra of $k[x_1,...,x_N]$ generated by the monomials ${x_i x_j | (x_i,x_j) \text{is an edge of} G}$. We denote this monomial algebra by k[G]. This paper describ…
We present a class of homogeneous ideals which are generated by monomials and binomials of degree two and are set-theoretic complete intersections. This class includes certain reducible varieties of minimal degree and, in particular, the presentation ideals of the fiber cone algebras of monomial varieties of codimension two.
Let K be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 0. We apply a theorem of C. Han to give an explicit description for the weak Lefschetz property of the monomial Artinian complete intersection A = K[X,Y,Z]/(X^d,Y^d,Z^d) in terms of d and p. This answers a question of J. Migliore, R. M. Miro-Roig and U. Nagel and, equivalently, characterizes for which characteristics the rank-2 syzygy bundle Syz(X^d,Y^d,Z^d) on PP^2 satisfies the Grauert-Muelich theorem. As a corollary we obtain that for p=2 the algebra A has the weak Lefschetz property if and only if d=(2^t+1)/3 or d=(2^t-1)/3 for s…
Given an ideal $I=(f_1,\ldots,f_r)$ in $\mathbb C[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ generated by forms of degree $d$, and an integer $k>1$, how large can the ideal $I^k$ be, i.e., how small can the Hilbert function of $\mathbb C[x_1,\ldots,x_n]/I^k$ be? If $r\le n$ the smallest Hilbert function is achieved by any complete intersection, but for $r>n$, the question is in general very hard to answer. We study the problem for $r=n+1$, where the result is known for $k=1$. We also study a closely related problem, the Weak Lefschetz property, for $S/I^k$, where $I$ is the ideal generated by the $d$'th powers of the v…
Based on the fact that projective monomial curves in the plane are complete intersections, we give an effective inductive method for creating infinitely many monomial curves in the projective $n$-space that are set theoretic complete intersections. We illustrate our main result by giving different infinite families of examples. Our proof is constructive and provides one binomial and $(n-2)$ polynomial explicit equations for the hypersurfaces cutting out the curve in question.
In this paper we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the Cohen-Macaulayness of the tangent cone of a monomial curve in the 4-dimensional affine space. We study particularly the case where $C$ is a Gorenstein non-complete intersection monomial curve.
The aim of the article is to study the Betti numbers of the tangent cone of Gorenstein monomial curves in affine 4-space. If $C_S$ is a non-complete intersection Gorenstein monomial curve whose tangent cone is Cohen-Macaulay, we show that the possible Betti sequences are (1,5,5,1), (1,5,6,2) and (1,6,8,3).
Let $C$ be a Gorenstein non complete intersection monomial curve in the 4-dimensional affine space. In this paper we study the minimal number of generators of the tangent cone of $C$. Special attention will be paid to the case where $C$ has Cohen-Macaulay tangent cone at the origin.
The core of an ideal is the intersection of all its reductions. We describe the core of a zero-dimensional monomial ideal I as the largest monomial ideal contained in a general reduction of I. This provides a new interpretation of the core in the monomial case as well as an efficient algorithm for computing it. We relate the core to adjoints and first coefficient ideals, and in dimension two and three we give explicit formulas.
We study a numerical semigroup ring as an algebra over another numerical semigroup ring. The complete intersection property of numerical semigroup algebras is investigated using factorizations of monomials into minimal ones. The goal is to study whether a flat rectangular algebra is a complete intersection. Along this direction, special types of algebras generated by few monomials are worked out in detail.
Thompson (2014) exhibits a formula for the multiplier ideal with multiplier lambda of a monomial curve C with ideal I as an intersection of a term coming from the I-adic valuation, the multiplier ideal of the term ideal of I, and terms coming from certain specified auxiliary valuations. This short note shows it suffices to consider only one auxiliary valuation. This improvement is achieved through a more intrinsic approach, reduction to the toric case.
We express the Segre class of a monomial scheme -- or, more generally, a scheme monomially supported on a set of divisors cutting out complete intersections -- in terms of an integral computed over an associated body in euclidean space. The formula is in the spirit of the classical Bernstein-Kouchnirenko theorem computing intersection numbers of equivariant divisors in a torus in terms of mixed volumes, but deals with the more refined intersection-theoretic invariants given by Segre classes, and holds in the less restrictive context of `r.c. monomial schemes'.

We show that every complete intersection of Laurent polynomials in an algebraic torus is isomorphic to a complete intersection of master functions in the complement of a hyperplane arrangement, and vice versa. We call this association Gale duality because the exponents of the monomials in the polynomials annihilate the weights of the master functions. We use Gale duality to give a Kouchnirenko theorem for the number of solutions to a system of master functions and to compute some topological invariants of generic master function complete intersections.
We study (slope-)stability properties of syzygy bundles on a projective space P^N given by ideal generators of a homogeneous primary ideal. In particular we give a combinatorial criterion for a monomial ideal to have a semistable syzygy bundle. Restriction theorems for semistable bundles yield the same stability results on the generic complete intersection curve. From this we deduce a numerical formula for the tight closure of an ideal generated by monomials or by generic homogeneous elements in a generic two-dimensional complete intersection ring.
Let $ e_1, ..., e_c $ be positive integers and let $ Y \subseteq \mathbb{P}^n$ be the monomial complete intersection defined by the vanishing of $x_1^{e_1}, ..., x_c^{e_c}$. In this paper we study sharp upper bounds on the number of equations and syzygies of subschemes parametrized by the Hilbert scheme of points $Hilb^d(Y)$, and discuss applications to the Hilbert scheme of points $Hilb^d(X)$ of arbitrary complete intersections $X \subseteq \mathbb{P}^n$.
Stanley showed that monomial complete intersections have the strong Lefschetz property. Extending this result we show that a simple extension of an Artinian Gorenstein algebra with the strong Lefschetz property has again the strong Lefschetz property.
Let $F(x, y) \in \mathbb{C}[x,y]$ be a polynomial of degree $d$ and let $G(x,y) \in \mathbb{C}[x,y]$ be a polynomial with $t$ monomials. We want to estimate the maximal multiplicity of a solution of the system $F(x,y) = G(x,y) = 0$. Our main result is that the multiplicity of any isolated solution $(a,b) \in \mathbb{C}^2$ with nonzero coordinates is no greater than $\frac{5}{2}d^2t^2$. We ask whether this intersection multiplicity can be polynomially bounded in the number of monomials of $F$ and $G$, and we briefly review some connections between sparse polynomials and algebraic complexity the…
We prove that the number of real intersection points of a real line with a real plane curve defined by a polynomial with at most t monomials is either infinite or does not exceed 6t -7. This improves a result by M. Avendano. Furthermore, we prove that this bound is sharp for t = 3 with the help of Grothendieck's dessins d'enfant.
We study properties of the resolution of almost Gorenstein artinian algebras $R/I,$ i.e. algebras defined by ideals $I$ such that $I=J+(f),$ with $J$ Gorenstein ideal and $f\in R.$ Such algebras generalize the well known almost complete intersection artinian algebras. Then we give a new explicit description of the resolution and of the graded Betti numbers of almost complete intersection ideals of codimension $3$ and we characterize the ideals whose graded Betti numbers can be achieved using artinian monomial ideals.
The Chow ring of the moduli space of marked rational curves is generated by Keel's divisor classes. The top graded part of this Chow ring is isomorphic to the integers, generated by the class of a single point. In this paper, we give an algorithm for computing the intersection degree of tuples of Keel's divisor classes. This computation is a concrete but complicated algorithmic question in the field. Also, we give a simple complexity argument for the algorithm. Additionally, we introduce three identities on multinomial coefficients, as well as proofs for them.
In this article, we consider an infinite family of normal surface singularities with an integral homology sphere link which is related to the family of space monomial curves with a plane semigroup. These monomial curves appear as the special fibers of equisingular families of curves whose generic fibers are a complex plane branch, and the related surface singularities appear in a proof of the monodromy conjecture for these curves. To investigate whether the link of a normal surface singularity is an integral homology sphere, one can use a characterization that depends on the determinant of the…
Consider a system of two polynomial equations in two variables: $$F(X,Y)=G(X,Y)=0$$ where $F \in \rr[X,Y]$ has degree $d \geq 1$ and $G \in \rr[X,Y]$ has $t$ monomials. We show that the system has only $O(d^3t+d^2t^3)$ real solutions when it has a finite number of real solutions. This is the first polynomial bound for this problem. In particular, the bounds coming from the theory of fewnomials are exponential in $t$, and count only nondegenerate solutions. More generally, we show that if the set of solutions is infinite, it still has at most $O(d^3t+d^2t^3)$ connected components. By contrast, …
We prove a general formula for the intersection form of two arbitrary monomials in boundary divisors. Furthermore we present a tree basis of the cohomology of $\overline {M}_{0,n}$. With the help of the intersection form we determine the Gram matrix for this basis and give a formula for its inverse. This enables us to calculate the tensor product of the higher order multiplications arising in quantum cohomology and formal Frobenius manifolds. In the context of quantum cohomology this establishes the explicit Künneth formula.
We study the weak Lefschetz property of artinian Gorenstein algebras and in particular of artinian complete intersections. In codimension four and higher, it is an open problem whether all complete intersections have the weak Lefschetz property. For a given artinian Gorenstein algebra $A$ we ask what linear forms are Lefschetz elements for this particular algebra, i.e., which linear forms $\ell$ give maximal rank for all the multiplication maps $\times \ell: [A]_i \longrightarrow [A]_{i+1}$. This is a Zariski open set and its complement is the \emph{non-Lefschetz locus}. For monomial complete …
We study the footprint function, with respect to a monomial order, of complete intersection graded ideals in a polynomial ring with coefficients in a field. For graded ideals of dimension one, whose initial ideal is a complete intersection, we give a formula for the footprint function and a sharp lower bound for the corresponding minimum distance function. This allows us to recover a formula for the minimum distance of an affine cartesian code and the fact that in this case the minimum distance and the footprint functions coincide. Then we present an extension of a result of Alon and Füredi, a…
A bracket is a function that assigns a number to each monomial in variables τ_0, τ_1, ... We show that any bracket satisfying the string and the dilaton relations gives rise to a power series lying in the algebra A generated by the series \sum n^{n-1} q^n/n! and \sum n^n q^n /n! . As a consequence, various series from A appear in the intersection theory of moduli spaces of curves. A connection between the counting of ramified coverings of the sphere and the intersection theory on moduli spaces allows us to prove that some natural generating functions enumerating the ramified coverings lie, yet…
Using the Grothendieck-Lefschetz theory (see \cite{[SGA2]}) we prove a criterion to deduce that certain subvarieties of $\mathbb P^n$ of dimension $\geq 2$ are not set-theoretic complete intersections (see Theorem 1 of the Introduction). As applications we give a number of relevant examples. In the last part of the paper we prove that the arithmetic rank of a rational normal $d$-dimensional scroll $S_{n_1,...,n_d}$ in $\mathbb P^N$ is $N-2$, by producing an explicit set of $N-2$ homogeneous equations which define these scrolls set-theoretically (see Theorem 2 of the Introduction).
We prove that any pair of bivariate trinomials has at most 5 isolated roots in the positive quadrant. The best previous upper bounds independent of the polynomial degrees were much larger, e.g., 248832 (for just the non-degenerate roots) via a famous general result of Khovanski. Our bound is sharp, allows real exponents, allows degeneracies, and extends to certain systems of n-variate fewnomials, giving improvements over earlier bounds by a factor exponential in the number of monomials. We also derive analogous sharpened bounds on the number of connected components of the real zero set of a si…
