A multiple-valued function $f:X\to {\bf Q}_Q(Y)$ is essentially a rule assigning $Q$ unordered and non necessarily distinct elements of $Y$ to each element of $X$. We study the Lipschitz extension problem in this context by using two general Lipschitz extension theorems recently proved by U. Lang and T. Schlichenmaier. We prove that the pair $(X,{\bf Q}_Q(Y))$ has the Lipschitz extension property if $Y$ is a Banach space and $X$ is a metric space with a finite Nagata dimension. We also show that ${\bf Q}_{Q}(Y)$ is an absolute Lipschitz retract if $Y$ is a finite algebraic dimensional Banach space.
Let $f$ be a Lipschitz map from a subset $A$ of a stratified group to a Banach homogeneous group. We show that directional derivatives of $f$ act as homogeneous homomorphisms at density points of $A$ outside a $σ$-porous set. At density points of $A$ we establish a pointwise characterization of differentiability in terms of directional derivatives. We use these new results to obtain an alternate proof of almost everywhere differentiability of Lipschitz maps from subsets of stratified groups to Banach homogeneous groups satisfying a suitably weakened Radon-Nikodym property. As a consequence we …
We prove the differentiability of Lipschitz maps X-->V, where X is a complete metric measure space satisfying a doubling condition and a Poincaré inequality, and V is a Banach space with the Radon Nikodym Property (RNP). The proof depends on a new characterization of the differentiable structure on such metric measure spaces, in terms of directional derivatives in the direction of tangent vectors to suitable rectifiable curves.
We prove a Rademacher-type theorem for Lipschitz mappings from a subset of a Carnot group to a Banach homogeneous group, equipped with a suitably weakened Radon-Nikodym property. We provide a metric area formula that applies to these mappings and more generally to all almost everywhere metrically differentiable Lipschitz mappings defined on a Carnot group.
We introduce the notion of asymptotic coarse Lipschitz equivalence of metric spaces. We show that it is strictly weaker than coarse Lipschitz equivalence. We study its impact on the asymptotic dimension of metric spaces. Then we focus on Banach spaces. We prove that, for $2\leq p<\infty$, being linearly isomorphic to $\ell_p$ is stable under asymptotic coarse Lipschitz equivalences. Finally, we establish a version of the Gorelik principle in this setting and apply it to prove the stability of various properties of asymptotic uniform smoothness of Banach spaces under asymptotic coarse Lipschitz…
We prove that the "slit carpet" introduced by Merenkov does not admit a bi-Lipschitz embedding into any uniformly convex Banach space. In particular, this includes any Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$, but also spaces such as $L^p$ for $p \in (1,\infty)$. This resolves Question 8 in the 1997 list by Heinonen and Semmes.
The purpose of this article is to generalize some known characterizations of Banach space properties in terms of graph preclusion. In particular, it is shown that superreflexivity can be characterized by the non-equi-bi-Lipschitz embeddability of any family of bundle graphs generated by a nontrivial finitely-branching bundle graph. It is likewise shown that asymptotic uniform convexifiability can be characterized within the class of reflexive Banach spaces with an unconditional asymptotic structure by the non-equi-bi-Lipschitz embeddability of any family of bundle graphs generated by a nontriv…
We show that there exists a strong uniform embedding from any proper metric space into any Banach space without cotype. Then we prove a result concerning the Lipschitz embedding of locally finite subsets of $\mathcal{L}_{p}$-spaces. We use this locally finite result to construct a coarse bi-Lipschitz embedding for proper subsets of any $\mathcal{L}_p$-space into any Banach space $X$ containing the $\ell_p^n$'s. Finally using an argument of G. Schechtman we prove that for general proper metric spaces and for Banach spaces without cotype a converse statement holds.
We study the nonlinear embeddability of Banach spaces and the equi-embeddability of the family of Kalton's interlaced graphs $([\mathbb N]^k,d_{\mathbb K})_k$ into dual spaces. Notably, we define and study a modification of Kalton's property $\mathcal Q$ that we call property $\mathcal{Q}_p$ (with $p \in (1,+\infty]$). We show that if $([\mathbb N]^k,d_{\mathbb K})_k$ equi-coarse Lipschitzly embeds into $X^*$, then the Szlenk index of $X$ is greater than $ω$, and that this is optimal, i.e., there exists a separable dual space $Y^*$ that contains $([\mathbb N]^k,d_{\mathbb K})_k$ equi-Lipschitz…
We construct a regular random projection of a metric space onto a closed doubling subset and use it to linearly extend Lipschitz and $C^1$ functions. This way we prove more directly a result by Lee and Naor and we generalize the $C^1$ extension theorem by Whitney to Banach spaces.
If $X$ is a subset of a Banach space with $X-X$ homogeneous, then $X$ can be embedded into some $\R^n$ (with $n$ sufficiently large) using a linear map $L$ whose inverse is Lipschitz to within logarithmic corrections. More precisely, $$c\,\frac{\|x-y\|}{|\,\log\|x-y\|\,|^α}\le|Lx-Ly|\le c\|x-y\|$$ for all $x,y\in X$ with $\|x-y\|<δ$ for some $δ$ sufficiently small. A simple argument shows that one must have $α>1$ in the case of a general Banach space and $α>1/2$ in the case of a Hilbert space. It is shown in this paper that these exponents can be achieved. While the argument in a general Banac…
A metric space has the universal Lipschitz extension property if for each subspace S embedded quasi-isometrically into an arbitrary metric space M there exists a continuous linear extension of Banach-valued Lipschitz functions on S to those on all of M. We show that the finite direct sum of Gromov hyperbolic spaces of bounded geometry is universal in the sense of this definition.
We construct a complete metric space $M$ of cardinality continuum such that every non-singleton closed separable subset of $M$ fails to be a Lipschitz retract of $M$. This provides a metric analogue to the various classical and recent examples of Banach spaces failing to have linearly complemented subspaces of prescribed smaller density character.
Let (X, d) be a quasi-convex, complete and separable metric space with reference probability measure m. We prove that the set of of real valued Lipschitz function with non zero point-wise Lipschitz constant m-almost everywhere is residual, and hence dense, in the Banach space of Lipschitz and bounded functions. The result is the metric analogous of a result proved for real valued Lipschitz maps defined on R2 by Alberti, Bianchini and Crippa in [1].
If a metric subspace $M^{o}$ of an arbitrary metric space $M$ carries a doubling measure $μ$, then there is a simultaneous linear extension of all Lipschitz functions on $M^{o}$ ranged in a Banach space to those on $M$. Moreover, the norm of this linear operator is controlled by logarithm of the doubling constant of $μ$.
We show that all the standard distances from metric geometry and functional analysis, such as Gromov-Hausdorff distance, Banach-Mazur distance, Kadets distance, Lipschitz distance, Net distance, and Hausdorff-Lipschitz distance have all the same complexity and are reducible to each other in a precisely defined way. This is done in terms of descriptive set theory and is a part of a larger research program initiated by the authors in \emph{Complexity of distances: Theory of generalized analytic equivalence relations}. The paper is however targeted also to specialists in metric geometry and geome…
We introduce the notions of almost Lipschitz embeddability and nearly isometric embeddability. We prove that for $p\in [1,\infty]$, every proper subset of $L_p$ is almost Lipschitzly embeddable into a Banach space $X$ if and only if $X$ contains uniformly the $\ell_p^n$'s. We also sharpen a result of N. Kalton by showing that every stable metric space is nearly isometrically embeddable in the class of reflexive Banach spaces.
We study Lipschitz differentiability spaces, a class of metric measure spaces introduced by Cheeger. We show that if an Ahlfors regular Lipschitz differentiability space has charts of maximal dimension, then, at almost every point, all its tangents are uniformly rectifiable. In particular, at almost every point, such a space admits a tangent that is isometric to a finite-dimensional Banach space. In contrast, we also show that if an Ahlfors regular Lipschitz differentiability space has charts of non-maximal dimension, then these charts are strongly unrectifiable in the sense of Ambrosio-Kirchh…
The metric Markov cotype of barycentric metric spaces is computed, yielding the first class of metric spaces that are not Banach spaces for which this bi-Lipschitz invariant is understood. It is shown that this leads to new nonlinear spectral calculus inequalities, as well as a unified framework for Lipschitz extension, including new Lipschitz extension results for CAT(0) targets. An example that elucidates the relation between metric Markov cotype and Rademacher cotype is analyzed, showing that a classical Lipschitz extension theorem of Johnson, Lindenstrauss and Benyamini is asymptotically s…
We show that if the Szlenk index of a Banach space $X$ is larger than the first infinite ordinal $ω$ or if the Szlenk index of its dual is larger than $ω$, then the tree of all finite sequences of integers equipped with the hyperbolic distance metrically embeds into $X$. We show that the converse is true when $X$ is assumed to be reflexive. As an application, we exhibit new classes of Banach spaces that are stable under coarse-Lipschitz embeddings and therefore under uniform homeomorphisms.
