To every Hermitian vector bundle with connection over a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ one can associate a corresponding connection Laplacian acting on the sections of the bundle. We define analogous combinatorial metric dependent Laplacians associated to triangulations of $M$ and prove that their spectra converge, as the mesh of the triangulations approaches zero, to the spectrum of the connection Laplacian.
We consider a convolution-type operator on vector bundles over metric-measure spaces. This operator extends the analogous convolution Laplacian on functions in our earlier work to vector bundles, and is a natural extension of the graph connection Laplacian. We prove that for Euclidean or Hermitian connections on closed Riemannian manifolds, the spectrum of this operator and that of the graph connection Laplacian both approximate the spectrum of the connection Laplacian.
We show that any closed $n$-dimensional manifold $(M,g)$ can be embedded by a map constructed using the heat kernels of the connection Laplacian as well as a maps constructed using truncated heat kernel at a certain time $t$ from a $δ$-net $\{q_i\}_{i=1}^{N_0}$ via a rescaling trick. Both the time $t$ and $N_0$ are bounded in terms of the dimension, bounds on the Ricci curvature and its derivative, the injectivity radius, and the volume. Moreover, both maps can be made arbitrarily close to an isometry.
We study the problem asking if one can embed manifolds into finite dimensional Euclidean spaces by taking finite number of eigenvector fields of the connection Laplacian. This problem is essential for the dimension reduction problem in massive data analysis. Singer-Wu proposed the vector diffusion map which embeds manifolds into the Hilbert space $l^2$ using eigenvectors of connection Laplacian. In this paper, we provide a positive answer to the problem. Specifically, we use eigenvector fields to construct local coordinate charts with low distortion, and show that the distortion constants depe…
In this paper, a discrete form of the Kato inequality for discrete magnetic Laplacians on graphs is used to study asymptotic properties of the spectrum of discrete magnetic Schrodinger operators. We use the existence of a ground state with suitable properties for the ordinary combinatorial Laplacian and semigroup domination to relate the combinatorial Laplacian with the discrete magnetic Laplacian.
This paper discusses the question whether the discrete spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator is infinite or finite. The borderline-behavior of the curvatures for this problem will be completely determined.
We establish a uniform comparison between the spectrum of the rough Laplacian (acting on sections of a vector bundle of complex rank one or of harmonic curvature) with the spectrum of a discrete operator (a generalization of a discrete magnetic Laplacian added with a potential) acting on a finite dimensional space coming from a discretization process. As an application, we obtain a comparison of the first positive eigenvalue of the rough Laplacian with the holonomy.
Our goal in this paper is to find an estimate for the spectral gap of the Laplacian on a 2-simplicial complex consisting on a triangulation of a complete graph. An upper estimate is given by generalizing the Cheeger constant. The lower estimate is obtained from the first non-zero eigenvalue of the discrete Laplacian acting on the functions of certain sub-graphs.
Given a class of closed Riemannian manifolds with prescribed geometric conditions, we introduce an embedding of the manifolds into $\ell^2$ based on the heat kernel of the Connection Laplacian associated with the Levi-Civita connection on the tangent bundle. As a result, we can construct a distance in this class which leads to a pre-compactness theorem on the class under consideration.
The existence of bound states for the magnetic Laplacian in unbounded domains can be quite challenging in the case of a homogeneous magnetic field. We provide an affirmative answer for almost flat corners and slightly curved half-planes when the total curvature of the boundary is positive.
We consider the combinatorial Laplacian on a sequence of discrete tori which approximate the m-dimensional torus. In the special case m=1, Friedli and Karlsson derived an asymptotic expansion of the corresponding spectral zeta function in the critical strip, as the approximation parameter goes to infinity. There, the authors have also formulated a conjecture on this asymptotics, that is equivalent to the Riemann conjecture. In this paper, inspired by the work of Friedli and Karlsson, we prove that a similar asymptotic expansion holds for m=2. Similar argument applies to higher dimensions as we…
We study perturbations of the discrete Laplacian associated to discrete analogs of cusps and funnels. We perturb the metric and the potential in a long-range way. We establish a propagation estimate and a Limiting Absorption Principle away from the possible embedded eigenvalues. The approach is based on a positive commutator technique.
We study the relationship between the adjacency matrix and the discrete Laplacian acting on 1-forms. We also prove that if the adjacency matrix is bounded from below it is not necessarily essentially self-adjoint. We discuss the question of essential self-adjointness and the notion of completeness.
In this paper we study in detail some spectral properties of the magnetic discrete Laplacian. We identify its form-domain, characterize the absence of essential spectrum and provide the asymptotic eigenvalue distribution.
We discuss several geometric conditions guaranteeing the finiteness or the infiniteness of the discrete spectrum for Robin Laplacians on conical domains.
We introduce the notion of discrete cusp for a weighted graph. In this context, we provethat the form-domain of the magnetic Laplacian and that of thenon-magnetic Laplacian can be different. We establish the emptiness of the essential spectrum and compute theasymptotic of eigenvalues for the magnetic Laplacian.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of oriented faces especially triangles in a connected oriented locally finite graph. This framework then permits to define the Laplace operator on this structure of the 2-simplicial complex. We develop the notion of $χ$-completeness for the graphs, based on the cutoff functions. Moreover, we study essential self-adjointness of the discrete Laplacian from the $χ$-completeness geometric hypothesis.
In this paper, we investigate spectral properties of discrete Laplacians. Our study is based on the Hardy inequality and the use of super-harmonic functions. We recover and improve lower bounds for the bottom of the spectrum and of the essential spectrum. In some situation, we obtain Weyl asymptotics for the eigenvalues. We also provide a probabilistic representation of super-harmonic functions. Using coupling arguments, we set comparison results for the bottom of the spectrum, the bottom of the essential spectrum and the stochastic completeness of different discrete Laplacians. The class of w…
To a crystallographic root system we associate a system of multivariate orthogonal polynomials diagonalizing an integrable system of discrete pseudo Laplacians on the Weyl chamber. We develop the time-dependent scattering theory for these discrete pseudo Laplacians and determine the corresponding wave operators and scattering operators in closed form. As an application, we describe the scattering behavior of certain hyperbolic Ruijsenaars-Schneider type lattice Calogero-Moser models associated with the Macdonald polynomials.
In 2002 Freiberg and Zähle introduced and developed a harmonic calculus for measure-geometric Laplacians associated to continuous distributions. We show their theory can be extended to encompass distributions with finite support and give a matrix representation for the resulting operators. In the case of a uniform discrete distribution we make use of this matrix representation to explicitly determine the eigenvalues and the eigenfunctions of the associated Laplacian.
We study operators obtained by coupling an $n \times n$ random matrix from one of the Gaussian ensembles to the discrete Laplacian. We find the joint distribution of the eigenvalues and resonances of such operators. This is one of the possible mathematical models for quantum scattering in a complex physical system with one semi-infinite lead attached.
We study the behaviour of Laplace-type operators H on a complex vector bundle E $\rightarrow$ M in the adiabatic limit of the base space. This space is a fibre bundle M $\rightarrow$ B with compact fibres and the limit corresponds to blowing up directions perpendicular to the fibres by a factor 1/$ε$. Under a gap condition on the fibre-wise eigenvalues we prove existence of effective operators that provide asymptotics to any order in $ε$ for H (with Dirichlet boundary conditions), on an appropriate almost-invariant subspace of L${}^2$(E).
We study the eigenvalues of the connection Laplacian on a graph with an orthogonal group or unitary group signature. We establish higher order Buser type inequalities, i.e., we provide upper bounds for eigenvalues in terms of Cheeger constants in the case of nonnegative Ricci curvature. In this process, we discuss the concepts of Cheeger type constants and a discrete Ricci curvature for connection Laplacians and study their properties systematically. The Cheeger constants are defined as mixtures of the expansion rate of the underlying graph and the frustration index of the signature. The discr…
We address the Laplacian on a perturbed periodic graph which might not be a periodic graph. We present a class of perturbed graphs for which the essential spectra of the Laplacians are stable even when the graphs are perturbed by adding and removing infinitely many vertices and edges. Using this result, we demonstrate how to determine the spectra of cone-like graphs, the upper-half plane, and graphs obtained from $\mathbb{Z}^2$ by randomly adding vertices.
The O(d) Synchronization problem consists of estimating a set of unknown orthogonal transformations O_i from noisy measurements of a subset of the pairwise ratios O_iO_j^{-1}. We formulate and prove a Cheeger-type inequality that relates a measure of how well it is possible to solve the O(d) synchronization problem with the spectra of an operator, the graph Connection Laplacian. We also show how this inequality provides a worst case performance guarantee for a spectral method to solve this problem.
Recently, several data analytic techniques based on connection graph laplacian (CGL) ideas have appeared in the literature. At this point, the properties of these methods are starting to be understood in the setting where the data is observed without noise. We study the impact of additive noise on these methods, and show that they are remarkably robust. As a by-product of our analysis, we propose modifications of the standard algorithms that increase their robustness to noise. We illustrate our results in numerical simulations.
The aim of this article is to give a simple geometric condition that guarantees the existence of spectral gaps of the discrete Laplacian on periodic graphs. For proving this, we analyse the discrete magnetic Laplacian (DML) on the finite quotient and interpret the vector potential as a Floquet parameter. We develop a procedure of virtualising edges and vertices that produces matrices whose eigenvalues (written in ascending order and counting multiplicities) specify the bracketing intervals where the spectrum of the Laplacian is localised. We prove Higuchi-Shirai's conjecture for Z-periodic tre…
We prove the uniqueness of a translation invariant extension to non integer order classical symbols of the ordinary discrete sum on $L^1$-symbols, which we then describe using an Hadamard finite part procedure for sums over integer points of infinite unions of nested convex polytopes in $\R^d$. This canonical regularised sum is the building block to construct meromorphic extensions of the ordinary sum on holomorphic symbols. Explicit formulae for the complex residues at their poles are given in terms of noncommutative residues of classical symbols, thus extending results of Guillemin, Sternber…
We consider Laplacians on $\Z^2$-periodic discrete graphs. The following results are obtained: 1) The Floquet-Bloch decomposition is constructed and basic properties are derived. 2) The estimates of the Lebesgue measure of the spectrum in terms of geometric parameters of the graph are obtained. 3) The spectrum of the Laplacian is described, when the so-called fundamental graph consists of one or two vertices and any number of edges. 4) We consider the hexagonal lattice perturbed by adding one edge to the fundamental graph. There exist two cases: a) if the perturbed hexagonal lattice is biparti…
We discuss a Cheeger constant as a mixture of the frustration index and the expansion rate, and prove the related Cheeger inequalities and higher order Cheeger inequalities for graph Laplacians with cyclic signatures, discrete magnetic Laplacians on finite graphs and magnetic Laplacians on closed Riemannian manifolds. In this process, we develop spectral clustering algorithms for partially oriented graphs and multi-way spectral clustering algorithms via metrics in lens spaces and complex projective spaces. As a byproduct, we give a unified viewpoint of Harary's structural balance theory of sig…
We present a detailed study of the scattering system given by the Neumann Laplacian on the discrete half-space perturbed by a periodic potential at the boundary. We derive asymptotic resolvent expansions at thresholds and eigenvalues, we prove the continuity of the scattering matrix, and we establish new formulas for the wave operators. Along the way, our analysis puts into evidence a surprising relation between some properties of the potential, like the parity of its period, and the behaviour of the integral kernel of the wave operators.
In this article, we relate the spectrum of the discrete magnetic Laplacian (DML) on a finite simple graph with two structural properties of the graph: the existence of a perfect matching and the existence of a Hamiltonian cycle of the underlying graph. In particular, we give a family of spectral obstructions parametrised by the magnetic potential for the graph to be matchable (i.e., having a perfect matching) or for the existence of a Hamiltonian cycle. We base our analysis on a special case of the spectral preorder introduced in [FCLP20a] and we use the magnetic potential as a spectral contro…
Graph connection Laplacian (GCL) is a modern data analysis technique that is starting to be applied for the analysis of high dimensional and massive datasets. Motivated by this technique, we study matrices that are akin to the ones appearing in the null case of GCL, i.e the case where there is no structure in the dataset under investigation. Developing this understanding is important in making sense of the output of the algorithms based on GCL. We hence develop a theory explaining the behavior of the spectral distribution of a large class of random matrices, in particular random matrices with …
Let $Ω\subset \mathbb R^3$ be a waveguide which is obtained by translating a cross-section in a constant direction along an unbounded spatial curve. Consider $-Δ_Ω^D$ the Dirichlet Laplacian operator in $Ω$. Under the condition that the tangent vector of the reference curve admits a finite limit at infinity, we find the essential spectrum of $-Δ_Ω^D$. Then, we state sufficient conditions that give rise to a non-empty discrete spectrum for $-Δ_Ω^D$; in particular, we show that the number of discrete eigenvalues can be arbitrarily large since the waveguide is thin enough.
We consider Laplacians on periodic both discrete and metric equilateral graphs. Their spectrum consists of an absolutely continuous part (which is a union of non-degenerate spectral bands) and flat bands, i.e., eigenvalues of infinite multiplicity. We estimate effective masses associated with the ends of each spectral band in terms of geometric parameters of graphs. Moreover, in the case of the beginning of the spectrum we determine two-sided estimates of the effective mass in terms of geometric parameters of graphs. The proof is based on the Floquet theory, the factorization of fiber operator…
We develop eigenvalue estimates for the Laplacians on discrete and metric graphs using different types of boundary conditions at the vertices of the metric graph. Via an explicit correspondence of the equilateral metric and discrete graph spectrum (also in the ``exceptional'' values of the metric graph corresponding to the Dirichlet spectrum) we carry over these estimates from the metric graph Laplacian to the discrete case. We apply the results to covering graphs and present examples where the covering graph Laplacians have spectral gaps.
In 1983, Klaus studied a class of potentials with bumps and computed the essential spectrum of the associated Schr{ö}dinger operator with the help of some localisations at infinity. A key hypothesis is that the distance between two consecutive bumps tends to infinity at infinity. In this article, we introduce a new class of graphs (with patterns) that mimics this situation, in the sense that the distance between two patterns tends to infinity at infinity. These patterns tend, in some way, to asymptotic graphs. They are the localisations at infinity. Our result is that the essential spectrum of…
On a periodic planar graph whose edge weights satisfy a certain simple geometric condition, the discrete Laplacian and d-bar operators have the property that their determinants and inverses only depend on the local geometry of the graph. We obtain explicit expressions for the logarithms of the (normalized) determinants, as well as the inverses of these operators. We relate the logarithm of the determinants to the volume plus mean curvature of an associated hyperbolic ideal polyhedron. In the associated dimer and spanning tree models, for which the determinants of d-bar and the Laplacian respec…
We show a norm convergence result for the Laplacian on a class of post-critically finite fractals with arbitrary Borel regular probability measure which can be approximated by a sequence of finite-dimensional graph Laplacians with corresponding discrete probability measures. As a consequence other functions of the Laplacians (heat operator, spectral projections etc.) converge as well in operator norm. One also deduces convergence of the spectrum and the eigenfunctions in energy norm.
This paper deals with the principal eigenvalue of discrete $p$-Laplacian on the set of nonnegative integers. Alternatively, it is studying the optimal constant of a class of weighted Hardy inequalities. The main goal is the quantitative estimates of the eigenvalue. The paper begins with the case having reflecting boundary at origin and absorbing boundary at infinity. Several variational formulas are presented in different formulation: the difference form, the single summation form and the double summation form. As their applications, some explicit lower and upper estimates, a criterion for pos…
This work extends the applications of Anderson-type Hamiltonians to include transport characterized by anomalous diffusion. Herein, we investigate the transport properties of a one-dimensional disordered system that employs the discrete fractional Laplacian, $(-Δ)^s,\ s\in(0,2),$ in combination with results from spectral and measure theory. It is a classical mathematical result that the standard Anderson model exhibits localization of energy states for all nonzero disorder in one-dimensional systems. Numerical simulations utilizing our proposed model demonstrate that this localization effect i…

We consider a combinatorial Laplace operator on a sequence of discrete graphs which approximates the m-dimensional torus when the discretization parameter tends to infinity. We establish a polyhomogeneous expansion of the resolvent trace for the family of discrete graphs, jointly in the resolvent and the discretization parameter. Based on a result about interchanging regularized limits and regularized integrals, we compare the regularized limit of the log-determinants of the combinatorial Laplacian on the sequence of discrete graphs with the logarithm of the zeta determinant for the Laplace Be…
