On a periodic planar graph whose edge weights satisfy a certain simple geometric condition, the discrete Laplacian and d-bar operators have the property that their determinants and inverses only depend on the local geometry of the graph.
We obtain explicit expressions for the logarithms of the (normalized) determinants, as well as the inverses of these operators.
We relate the logarithm of the determinants to the volume plus mean curvature of an associated hyperbolic ideal polyhedron.
In the associated dimer and spanning tree models, for which the determinants of d-bar and the Laplacian respectively play the role of the partition function, this allows us to compute the entropy and correlations in terms of the local geometry.
In addition, we define a continuous family of special discrete analytic functions, which, via convolutions gives a general process for constructing discrete analytic functions and discrete harmonic functions on critical planar graphs.
We consider the Laplace operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions on a planar domain and study the effect that performing a scaling in one direction has on the spectrum. We derive the asymptotic expansion for the eigenvalues and corresponding eigenfunctions as a function of the scaling parameter around zero. This method allows us, for instance, to obtain an approximation for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue for a large class of planar domains, under very mild assumptions.
We consider the eigenvalue problem for the Laplace operator in a planar domain which can be decomposed into a bounded domain of arbitrary shape and elongated \branches" of variable cross-sectional profiles. When the eigenvalue is smaller than a prescribed threshold, the corresponding eigenfunction decays exponentially along each branch. We prove this behavior for Robin boundary condition and illustrate some related results by numerically computed eigenfunctions.
In the present paper we introduce the perturbed two-dimensional Robin bi-Laplacian in the exterior of a bounded simply-connected $C^2$-smooth open set. The considered perturbation is of lower order and corresponds to tension. We prove that the essential spectrum of this operator coincides with the positive semi-axis and that the negative discrete spectrum is non-empty if, and only if, the boundary parameter is negative. As the main result, we obtain an isoperimetric inequality for the lowest eigenvalue of such a perturbed Robin bi-Laplacian with a negative boundary parameter in the exterior of…

We consider a family of growth models defined using conformal maps in which the local growth rate is determined by $|Φ_n'|^{-η}$, where $Φ_n$ is the aggregate map for $n$ particles. We establish a scaling limit result in which strong feedback in the growth rule leads to one-dimensional limits in the form of straight slits. More precisely, we exhibit a phase transition in the ancestral structure of the growing clusters: for $η>1$, aggregating particles attach to their immediate predecessors with high probability, while for $η<1$ almost surely this does not happen.
We study the $p$-independence of spectra of Laplace operators on graphs arising from regular Dirichlet forms on discrete spaces. Here, a sufficient criterion is given solely by a uniform subexponential growth condition. Moreover, under a mild assumption on the measure we show a one-sided spectral inclusion without any further assumptions. We study applications to normalized Laplacians including symmetries of the spectrum and a characterization for positivity of the Cheeger constant. Furthermore, we consider Laplacians on planar tessellations for which we relate the spectral $p$-independence to…
We prove that the Fermi surface of a connected doubly periodic self-adjoint discrete graph operator is irreducible at all but finitely many energies provided that the graph (1) can be drawn in the plane without crossing edges (2) has positive coupling coefficients (3) has two vertices per period. If "positive" is relaxed to "complex", the only cases of reducible Fermi surface occur for the graph of the tetrakis square tiling, and these can be explicitly parameterized when the coupling coefficients are real. The irreducibility result applies to weighted graph Laplacians with positive weights.
We give a formula that express magnetic Berezin transforms associated with generalized Bargmann-Fock spaces as functions of the Euclidean Laplacian on Cn.
By Birman and Skvortsov it is known that if $\Omegasf$ is a planar curvilinear polygon with $n$ non-convex corners then the Laplace operator with domain $H^2(\Omegasf)\cap H^1_0(\Omegasf)$ is a closed symmetric operator with deficiency indices $(n,n)$. Here we provide a Kre\uın-type resolvent formula for any self-adjoint extensions of such an operator, i.e. for the set of self-adjoint non-Friedrichs Dirichlet Laplacians on $\Omegasf$, and show that any element in this set is the norm resolvent limit of a suitable sequence of Friedrichs-Dirichlet Laplacians with $n$ point interactions.
This paper is devoted to the asymptotic analysis of the eigenvalues of the Laplace operator with a strong magnetic field and Robin boundary condition on a smooth planar domain and with a negative boundary parameter. We study the singular limit when the Robin parameter tends to infinity which is equivalent to a semi-classical limit involving a small positive semi-classical parameter. The main result is a comparison between the spectrum of the Robin Laplacian with an effective operator defined on the boundary of the domain via the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. More precisely, the low-lying eig…
Dynamics of planar domains with moving boundaries driven by the gradient of a scalar field that satisfies an elliptic PDE is studied. We consider the question: For which kind of PDEs the domains are algebraic, provided the field has singularities at a fixed point inside the domain? The construction reveals a direct connection with the theory of the Calogero-Moser systems related to finite reflection groups and their integrable deformations.
We study the dimensional asymptotics of the effective actions, or functional determinants, for the Dirac operator D and Laplacians Δ+βR on round S^n. For Laplacians the behavior depends on ``the coupling strength'' β, and one cannot in general expect a finite limit of ζ'(0), and for the ordinary Laplacian, β=0, we prove it to be +\infty, for odd dimensions. For the Dirac operator, Bär and Schopka conjectured a limit of unity for the determinant ([BS]), i.e. \lim_{n\to\infty}\det(D, S^n_{\mathrm{can}})=1. We prove their conjecture rigorously, giving asymptotics, as well as a pattern of inequali…
The classical matrix-tree theorem relates the determinant of the combinatorial Laplacian on a graph to the number of spanning trees. We generalize this result to Laplacians on one- and two-dimensional vector bundles, giving a combinatorial interpretation of their determinants in terms of so-called cycle rooted spanning forests (CRSFs). We construct natural measures on CRSFs for which the edges form a determinantal process. This theory gives a natural generalization of the spanning tree process adapted to graphs embedded on surfaces. We give a number of other applications, for example, we compu…

The rational quantum algebraically integrable systems are non-trivial generalizations of Laplacian operators to the case of elliptic operators with variable coefficients. We study corresponding extensions of Laplacian growth connected with algebraically integrable systems, describing viscous free-boundary flows in non-homogenous media. We introduce a class of planar flows related with application of Adler-Moser polynomials and construct solutions for higher-dimensional cases, where the conformal mapping technique is unavailable.
