Let D be a smoothly bounded domain in C^2. Suppose that D admits a smooth defining function which is plurisubharmonic on the boundary of D. Then the Diederich-Fornaess exponent can be chosen arbitrarily close to 1, and the closure of D admits a Stein neighborhood basis.
Necessary conditions for a domain $Ω\subset \mathbb C^n$ admitting a local plurisubharmonic defining function on the boundary are given. In tandem, we give an algorithm to construct a local plurisubharmonic defining function on the boundary when one exists. In some cases we show that the necessary conditions are also sufficient.
Let $Ω=\{r<0\}\subset\mathbb C^2$, with $r$ plurisubharmonic on $bΩ=\{r=0\}$. Let $ρ$ be another defining function for $Ω$. A formula for the determinant of the complex Hessian of $ρ$ in terms of $r$ is computed. This formula is used to give necessary and sufficient conditions that make $ρ$ (locally) plurisubharmonic.
We investigate the question of existence of plurisubharmonic defining functions for smoothly bounded, pseudoconvex domains in $\mathbb{C}^2$. In particular, we construct a family of simple counterexamples to the existence of plurisubharmonic smooth local defining functions. Moreover, we give general criteria equivalent to the existence of plurisubharmonic smooth defining functions on or near the boundary of the domain. These equivalent characterizations are then explored for some classes of domains.
Let D be a smoothly bounded domain in complex space of dimension larger than 2. Suppose that D admits a smooth defining function which is plurisubharmonic on the boundary of D. Then the Diederich-Fornaess exponent can be chosen arbitrarily close to 1, and the closure of D admits a Stein neighborhood basis.
In this note we study the plurifinely locally maximal plurifinely plurisubharmonic functions and improve some known results on these functions. We prove in particular that any locally bounded plurifinely locally maximal plurifinely plurisubharmonic function is maximal, and that any finite plurisubharmonic function on an open subset of $\mathbb{C}^n$ is maximal if and only if it is plurifinely locally maximal.
We show that every strictly pseudoconvex domain $Ω$ with smooth boundary in a complex manifold $\mathcal{M}$ admits a global defining function, i.e., a smooth plurisubharmonic function $φ\colon U \to \mathbb R$ defined on an open neighbourhood $U \subset \mathcal{M}$ of $\overlineΩ$ such that $Ω= \{φ< 0\}$, $dφ\neq 0$ on $bΩ$ and $φ$ is strictly plurisubharmonic near $bΩ$. We then introduce the notion of the core $\mathfrak{c}(Ω)$ of an arbitrary domain $Ω\subset \mathcal{M}$ as the set of all points where every smooth and bounded from above plurisubharmonic function on $Ω$ fails to be strictl…
We show that the approaches to global regularity of the d-bar Neumann problem via the methods listed in the title are equivalent when the conditions involved are suitably modified. These modified conditions are also equivalent to one that is relevant in the context of Stein neighborhood bases and Mergelyan type approximation.
We extend a recent result of Avelin, Hed, and Persson about approximation of functions $u$ that are plurisubharmonic on a domain $Ω$ and continuous on $\barΩ$, with functions that are plurisubharmonic on (shrinking) neighborhoods of $\barΩ$. We show that such approximation is possible if the boundary of $Ω$ is $C^0$ outside a countable exceptional set $E\subset\partial Ω$. In particular, approximation is possible on the Hartogs triangle. For Hölder continuous $u$, approximation is possible under less restrictive conditions on $E$. We next give examples of domains where this kind of approximati…
We show that every bounded domain $D$ in $\mathbb R^n$ with smooth $p$-convex boundary for $2\le p < n$ admits a smooth defining function $ρ$ which is $p$-plurisubharmonic on $\overline D$; if in addition $bD$ has no $p$-flat points then $ρ$ can be chosen strongly $p$-plurisubharmonic on $D$. If $bD$ is $2$-convex then for any open connected conformal surface $M$ and conformal harmonic map $f:M\to \overline D$, either $f(M)\subset D$ or $f(M)\subset bD$. In particular, every conformal harmonic map $\mathbb D^*\to D$ from the punctured disc extends to a conformal harmonic map $\mathbb D\to D$.

In this note, we study the approximation of singular plurifinely plurisubharmonic function $u$ defined on a plurifinely domain $Ω$. Under some conditions, we prove that $u$ can be approximated by an increasing sequence of plurisubharmonic functions defined on Euclidean neighborhoods of $Ω$.
In this note we study the existence of the Lelong-Demailly number of a negative plurisubharmonic current with respect to a positive plurisubharmonic function on an open subset of $\C^n$. Then we establish some estimates of the Lelong-Demailly numbers of positive or negative plurisubharmonic currents.
In this paper, we use Takeuchi's Theorem to show that for every Lipschitz pseudoconvex domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{CP}^n$ there exists a Lipschitz defining function $ρ$ and an exponent $0<η<1$ such that $-(-ρ)^η$ is strictly plurisubharmonic on $Ω$. This generalizes a result of Ohsawa and Sibony for $C^2$ domains. In contrast to the Ohsawa-Sibony result, we provide a counterexample demonstrating that we may not assume $ρ=-δ$, where $δ$ is the geodesic distance function for the boundary of $Ω$.
Let D be a smoothly bounded domain in a complex vector space of dimension n. Suppose that D has a smooth defining function, such that the sum of any q eigenvalues of its complex Hessian are non-negative on the closure of D. We show that this implies global regularity of the Bergman projection on (0,j)-forms for j larger or equal to q-1.
The goal of this note is to present some recent results of our research concerning multiplier ideal sheaves on complex spaces and singularities of plurisubharmonic functions. We firstly introduce multiplier ideal sheaves on complex spaces (\emph{not} necessarily normal) via Ohsawa's extension measure, as a special case of which, it turns out to be the so-called Mather-Jacobian multiplier ideals in the algebro-geometric setting. As applications, we obtain a reasonable generalization of (algebraic) adjoint ideal sheaves to the analytic setting and establish some extension theorems on Kähler mani…
The complex Monge-Ampère operator has been defined for locally bounded plurisubharmonic functions by Bedford-Taylor in the 80's. This definition has been extended to compact complex manifolds, and to various classes of mildly unbounded quasi-plurisubharmonic functions by various authors. As this operator is not continuous for the $L^{1}$-topology, several stronger topologies have been introduced over the last decades to remedy this, while maintaining efficient compactness criteria. The purpose of this note is to show that these stronger topologies are essentially equivalent to the natural quas…
In this note, we will present global equisingular approximations of quasi-plurisubharmonic functions with stable analytic pluripolar sets on compact complex manifolds.
The Minkowski function is a crucial tool used in the study of balanced domains and, more generally, quasi-balanced domains in several complex variables. If a quasi-balanced domain is bounded and pseudoconvex then it is well-known that its Minkowski function is plurisubharmonic. In this short note, we prove that under the additional assumption of smoothness of the boundary, the Minkowski function of a quasi-balanced domain is in fact smooth away from the origin. This allows us to construct a smooth plurisubharmonic defining function for such domains. Our result is new even in the case of balanc…
In this note we investigate the regularity of geodesics in the space of convex and plurisubharmonic functions. In the real setting we prove (optimal) local C^{1,1} regularity. We construct examples which prove that the global C^{1,1} regularity fails both in the real and complex case in contrast to the Kähler manifold setting. Finally we show a necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of a smooth geodesic between two smooth strictly convex functions.
Let $X$ be a compact Kähler manifold and $θ$ a smooth closed $(1,1)$-real form representing a big cohomology class $α\in H^{1,1}(X,\R)$. The purpose of this note is to show, using pluripotential and viscosity techniques, that any $θ$-plurisubharmonic function $\f$ can be approximated from above by a decreasing sequence of continuous $θ$-plurisubharmonic functions with minimal singularities, assuming that there exists a single such function.
Let $D=\{ρ<0\}$ be a smooth domain of finite type in an almost complex manifold (M,J) of real dimension four. We assume that the defining function $ρ$ is J-plurisubharmonic on a neighborhood of $\overline{D}$. We study the asymptotic behavior of pseudoholomorphic discs contained in the domain D.
Let $D=\{ρ< 0\}$ be a smooth relatively compact domain in an almost complex manifold $(M,J)$, where $ρ$ is a smooth defining function of $D$, strictly $J$-plurisubharmonic in a neighborhood of the closure $\overline{D}$ of $D$. We prove that $D$ has a connected boundary and is Gromov hyperbolic.
In this note, we demonstrate the existence of a Baker domain of a transcendental skew-product by constructing a domain that is shown to be absorbing using plurisubharmonic method.
This note establishes smooth approximation from above for J-plurisubharmonic functions on an almost complex manifold (X,J). The following theorem is proved. Suppose X is J-pseudoconvex, i.e., X admits a smooth strictly J-plurisubharmonic exhaustion function. Let u be an (upper semi-continuous) J-plurisubharmonic function on X. Then there exists a sequence {u_j} of smooth, strictly J-plurisubharmonic functions point-wise decreasing down to u. On any almost complex manifold (X,J) each point has a fundamental neighborhood system of J-pseudoconvex domains, and so the theorem above establishes loca…
Let $M$ be a compact, pseudoconvex-oriented, $(2n+1)$-dimensional, abstract CR manifold of hypersurface type, $n\geq 2$. We prove the following: (i) If $M$ admits a strictly CR-plurisubharmonic function on $(0,q_0)$-forms, then the complex Green operator $G_q$ exists and is continuous on $L^2_{0,q}(M)$ for degrees $q_0\le q\le n-q_0$. In the case that $q_0=1$, we also establish continuity for $G_0$ and $G_n$. Additionally, the $\bar\partial_b$-equation on $M$ can be solved in $C^\infty(M)$. (ii) If $M$ satisfies "a weak compactness property" on $(0,q_0)$-forms, then $G_q$ is a continuous opera…
We construct a special plurisubharmonic defining function for a smoothly bounded strictly pseudoconvex domain so that the determinant of the complex Hessian vanishes to high order on the boundary. This construction, coupled with regularity of solutions of complex Monge-Ampere equation and the reflection principle, enables us to give a new proof of the Fefferman mapping theorem.
Let $M$ be a pseudoconvex, oriented, bounded and closed CR submanifold of $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ of hypersurface type. Our main result says that when a certain $1$-form on $M$ is exact on the null space of the Levi form, then the complex Green operator on $M$ satisfies Sobolev estimates. This happens in particular when $M$ admits a set of plurisubharmonic defining functions or when $M$ is strictly pseudoconvex except for the points on a simply connected complex submanifold.
The quotient of the Szegö and Bergman kernels for a smooth bounded pseudoconvex domains in ${\mathbb C}^n$ is bounded from above by $δ|\logδ|^p$ for any $p>n$, where $δ$ is the distance to the boundary. For a class of domains that includes those of D'Angelo finite type and those with plurisubharmonic defining functions, the quotient is also bounded from below by $δ|\logδ|^p$ for any $p<-1$. Moreover, for convex domains, the quotient is bounded from above and below by constant multiples of $δ$.
The aim of this short note is to investigate the geometry of weakly complete subdomains of Grauert type surfaces, i.e. open connected sets D, sitting inside a Grauert type surface X, which admit a smooth plurisubharmonic exhaustion function. We prove that they are either modifications of Stein spaces or Grauert type surfaces themselves and we apply these results to the special case of Hopf surfaces.
Let $K$ be a compact subset of a totally-real manifold $M$, where $M$ is either a $\mathcal{C}^2$-smooth graph in $\mathbb{C}^{2n}$ over $\mathbb{C}^n$, or $M=u^{-1}\{0\}$ for a $\mathcal{C}^2$-smooth submersion $u$ from $\mathbb{C}^n$ to $\mathbb{R}^{2n-k}$, $k\leq n$. In this case we show that $K$ is polynomially convex if and only if for a fixed neighbourhood $U$, defined in terms of the defining functions of $M$, there exists a plurisubharmonic function $Ψ$ on $\mathbb{C}^n$ such that $K\subset \{Ψ<0\}\subset U$.
In this note, we consider the linear topological invariant Ω-tilda for Fréchet spaces of global analytic functions on Stein manifolds. We show that O(M), for a Stein manifold M, enjoys the property Ω-tilda if and only if every compact subset of M lies in a relatively compact sublevel set of a bounded plurisubharmonic function defined on M. We also look at some immediate implications of this characterization.
We highlight an intrinsic connection between classical quadrature domains and the well-studied theme of removable singularities of analytic sets in several complex variables. Exploiting this connection provides a new framework to recover several basic properties of such domains, namely the algebraicity of their boundary, a better understanding of the associated defining polynomial and the possible boundary singularities that can occur.
In a previous work, we classified weakly complete surfaces which admit a real analytic plurisubharmonic exhaustion function; we showed that, if they are not proper over a Stein space, then they admit a pluriharmonic function, with compact Levi-flat level sets foliated with dense complex leaves. We called these Grauert type surfaces. In this note we investigate some properties of these surfaces. Namely, we prove that the only compact curves that can be contained in them are negative in the sense of Grauert and that the level sets of the pluriharmonic function are connected, thus completing the …
In $\mathbb{C}^2$, we classify the domains for which $\rm Aut(Ω)$ is noncompact and describe these domains by their defining functions. This note is based on the technique of the scaling method introduced by Frankel \cite{Fr86} and Kim \cite{Ki90}. One feature of this article is that we are able to analyze the defining functions of infinite type boundary. As a corollary, we also prove a result that under some conditions, $\rm Aut(Ω)$ contains $\mathbb{R}$, which is an extension of \cite{Fr86}.
