Let M be a closed 5-manifold of pinched curvature 0<δ\le \text{sec}_M\le 1. We prove that M is homeomorphic to a spherical space form if M satisfies one of the following conditions: (i) δ=1/4 and the fundamental group is a non-cyclic group of order at least C, a constant. (ii) The center of the fundamental group has index at least w(δ), a constant depending on δ. (iii) The ratio of the volume and the maximal injectivity radius is less than ε(δ). (iv) The volume is less than ε(δ) and the fundamental group π_1(M) has a center of index at least w, a universal constant, and π_1(M) is either isomorphic to a spherical 5-space group or has an odd order.
In this paper, we obtain classification of four-dimensional Einstein manifolds with positive Ricci curvature and pinched sectional curvature. In particular, the first result concerns with an upper bound of sectional curvature, improving a theorem of E. Costa. The second is a generalization of D. Yang's result assuming an upper bound on the difference between sectional curvatures.
There is a conjecture that a complete Riemannian 3-manifold with bounded sectional curvature, and pointwise pinched nonnegative Ricci curvature, must be flat or compact. We show that this is true when the negative part (if any) of the sectional curvature decays quadratically.
In this paper, we study closed four-dimensional manifolds. In particular, we show that under various new pinching curvature conditions (for example, the sectional curvature is no more than 5/6 of the smallest Ricci eigenvalue) then the manifold is definite. If restricting to a metric with harmonic Weyl tensor, then it must be self-dual or anti-self-dual under the same conditions. Similarly, if restricting to an Einstein metric, then it must be either the complex projective space with its Fubini-Study metric, the round sphere or their quotients. Furthermore, we also classify Einstein manifolds …
A Riemannian manifold $M$ has higher hyperbolic rank if every geodesic has a perpendicular Jacobi field making sectional curvature -1 with the geodesic. If in addition, the sectional curvatures of $M$ lie in the interval $[-1,-\frac14]$, and $M$ is closed, we show that $M$ is a locally symmetric space of rank one. This partially extends work by Constantine using completely different methods. It is also a partial converse to Hamenstädt's hyperbolic rank rigidity result for sectional curvatures $\leq -1$, and complements well-known results on Euclidean and spherical rank rigidity.
The goal of this paper is to study the stability of pure nilpotent structures on a manifold associated to different collapsed metrics. We prove that if two metrics on a $n$-manifold of bounded sectional curvature are $L_0$-bi-Lipchitz equivalent and sufficient collapsed (depending on $L_0$ and $n$), then up to a diffeomorphism, the underlying nilpotent Killing structures coincide with each other or one is embedded into another as a subsheaf. It improves Cheeger-Fukaya-Gromov's locally compatibility of pure nilpotent Killing structures for one collapsed metric of bounded sectional curvature to …
We prove that a complete Kähler manifold with holomorphic curvature bounded between two negative constants admits a unique complete Kähler-Einstein metric. We also show this metric and the Kobayashi-Royden metric are both uniformly equivalent to the background Kähler metric. Furthermore, all three metrics are shown to be uniformly equivalent to the Bergman metric, if the complete Kähler manifold is simply-connected, with the sectional curvature bounded between two negative constants. In particular, we confirm two conjectures of R. E. Greene and H. Wu posted in 1979.
In this paper we study sectional curvature bounds for Riemannian manifolds with density from the perspective of a weighted torsion free connection introduced recently by the last two authors. We develop two new tools for studying weighted sectional curvature bounds: a new weighted Rauch comparison theorem and a modified notion of convexity for distance functions. As applications we prove generalizations of theorems of Preissman and Byers for negative curvature, the (homeomorphic) quarter-pinched sphere theorem, and Cheeger's finiteness theorem. We also improve results of the first two authors …
We study collapsed manifolds with Ricci bounded covering geometry i.e., Ricci curvature is bounded below and the Riemannian universal cover is non-collapsed or consists of uniform Reifenberg points. Via Ricci flows' techniques, we partially extend the nilpotent structural results of Cheeger-Fukaya-Gromov, on collapsed manifolds with (sectional curvature) local bounded covering geometry, to manifolds with (global) Ricci boundedcovering geometry.
We study how the existence of a negatively pinched Kähler metric on a domain in complex Euclidean space restricts the geometry of its boundary. In particular, we show that if a convex domain admits a complete Kähler metric, with pinched negative holomorphic bisectional curvature outside a compact set, then the boundary of the domain does not contain any complex subvariety of positive domain. Moreover, if the boundary of the domain is smooth, then it is of finite type in the sense of D'Angelo. We also use curvature to provide a characterization of strong pseudoconvexity amongst convex domains. …
Motivated by a previous work of Zheng and the second named author, we study pinching constants of compact Kähler manifolds with positive holomorphic sectional curvature. In particular we prove a gap theorem following the work of Petersen and Tao on Riemannian manifolds with almost quarter-pinched sectional curvature.
We show that the singularities of the twisted Kähler--Einstein metric arising as the long-time solution of the Kähler--Ricci flow or in the collapsed limit of Ricci-flat Kähler metrics is intimately related to the holomorphic sectional curvature of the reference conical geometry. This provides an alternative proof of the second-order estimate obtained by Gross--Tosatti--Zhang with explicit constants appearing in the divisorial pole.
On the symmetrized bidisc G2 with the Bergman metric, the holomorphic sectional curvature is negatively pinched and the holomorphic bisectional curvature is not. The consequences in invariant metrics are provided.
In this paper, we study collapsed manifolds with boundary, where we assume a lower sectional curvature bound, two sides bounds on the second fundamental forms of boundaries and upper diameter bound. Our main concern is the case when inradii of manifolds converge to zero. This is a typical case of collapsing manifolds with boundary. We determine the limit spaces of inradius collapsed manifolds as Alexandrov spaces with curvature uniformly bounded below. When the limit space has co-dimension one, we completely determined the topology of inradius collapsed manifold in terms of singular $I$-bundle…
We prove that complete Riemannian manifolds with polynomial growth and Ricci curvature bounded from below, admit uniform Poincaré inequalities. A global, uniform Poincaré inequality for horospheres in the universal cover of a closed, $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold with pinched negative sectional curvature follows as a corollary.
We show the existence of complete negative Kähler-Einstein metric on Stein manifolds with negatively pinched holomorphic sectional curvature. We prove that any Kähler metrics on such manifolds can be deformed to the complete negative Kähler-Einstein metric using the normalized Kähler-Ricci flow.
We study mean curvature flow of $n$-dimensional submanifolds of $S_K^{n+\ell}$, the round $(n+\ell)$-sphere of sectional curvature $K>0$, under the quadratic curvature pinching condition $|A|^{2} < \frac{1}{n-2}|H|^{2} + 4K$ when $n\geq 8$, $|A|^{2} < \frac{4}{3n}|H|^{2}+\frac{n}{2}K$ when $n=7$, and $|A|^2<\frac{3(n+1)}{2n(n+2)}|H|^2+\frac{2n(n-1)}{3(n+1)}K$ when $n=5$ or $6$. This condition is related to a theorem of Li and Li [Arch. Math., 58:582--594, 1992] which states that the only $n$-dimensional minimal submanifolds of $S_K^{n+\ell}$ satisfying $|A|^2<\frac{2n}{3}K$ are the totally geo…
We study mean curvature flow in $\mathbb S_K^{n+1}$, the round sphere of sectional curvature $K>0$, under the quadratic curvature pinching condition $|A|^{2} < \frac{1}{n-2} H^{2} + 4 K$ when $n\ge 4$ and $|A|^{2} < \frac{3}{5}H^{2}+\frac{8}{3}K$ when $n=3$. This condition is related to a famous theorem of Simons, which states that the only minimal hypersurfaces satisfying $\vert A\vert^2<nK$ are the totally geodesic hyperspheres. It is related to but distinct from two-convexity. Notably, in contrast to two-convexity, it allows the mean curvature to change sign. We show that the pinching condi…
In this work, we (partially) generalize two classical tools in study of collapsed manifolds with bounded sectional curvature: a (singular) fibration theorem by Fukaya (1987) and Cheeger-Fukaya-Gromov (1992), and the stability for isometric compact Lie group actions on manifolds by Palais (1961) and Grove-Karcher (1973), to manifolds with local bounded Ricci covering geometry. Our two generalized results have been used in a recent work of Xiaochun Rong in generalizing Gromov's almost flat manifolds theorem to maximally collapsed manifolds with local bounded Ricci covering geometry.
For $ρ, v>0$, we say that an $n$-manifold $M$ satisfies local $(ρ,v)$-bound Ricci covering geometry, if Ricci curvature $\text{Ric}_M\ge -(n-1)$, and for all $x\in M$, $\text{vol}(B_ρ(\tilde x))\ge v>0$, where $\tilde x$ is an inverse image of $x$ on the (local) Riemannian universal cover of the $ρ$-ball at $x$. In this paper, we extend the nilpotent fiber bundle theorem of Cheeger-Fukaya-Gromov on a collapsed $n$-manifold $M$ of bounded sectional curvature to $M$ of a local $(ρ,v)$-bound Ricci covering geometry, and $M$ is close to a non-collapsed Riemannian manifold of lower dimension. The n…
We survey some recent developments in the study of collapsing Riemannian manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded below, especially the locally bounded Ricci covering geometry and the Ricci flow smoothing techniques. We then prove that if a Calabi-Yau manifold is sufficiently volume collapsed with bounded diameter and sectional curvature, then it admits a Ricci-flat Kähler metrictogether with a compatible pure nilpotent Killing structure: this is related to an open question of Cheeger, Fukaya and Gromov.
We consider the Laplace-Beltrami operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions on convex domains in a Riemannian manifold $(M^n,g)$, and prove that the product of the fundamental gap with the square of the diameter can be arbitrarily small whenever $M^n$ has even a single tangent plane of negative sectional curvature. In particular, the fundamental gap conjecture strongly fails for small deformations of Euclidean space which introduce any negative curvature. We also show that when the curvature is negatively pinched, it is possible to construct such domains of any diameter up to the diameter of …
