We study the variance and the Laplace transform of the probability law of linear eigenvalue statistics of unitary invariant Matrix Models of n-dimentional Hermitian matrices as n tends to infinity. Assuming that the test function of statistics is smooth enough and using the asymptotic formulas by Deift et al for orthogonal polynomials with varying weights, we show first that if the support of the Density of States of the model consists of two or more intervals, then in the global regime the variance of statistics is a quasiperiodic function of n generically in the potential, determining the model. We show next that the exponent of the Laplace transform of the probability law is not in general 1/2variance, as it should be if the Central Limit Theorem would be valid, and we find the asymptotic form of the Laplace transform of the probability law in certain cases.
This paper is a continuation of our paper "Fluctuations of Matrix Elements of Regular Functions of Gaussian Random Matrices", J. Stat. Phys. (134), 147--159 (2009), in which we proved the Central Limit Theorem for the matrix elements of differential functions of the real symmetric random Gaussian matrices (GOE). Here we consider the real symmetric random Wigner matrices having independent (modulo symmetry conditions) but not necessarily Gaussian entries. We show that in this case the matrix elements of sufficiently smooth functions of these random matrices have in general another limiting law …
We develop a unified approach to the problem of clustering in the three different fields of applications, as indicated in the title the paper. The approach is based on Khintchine's probabilistic method that grew out of the Darwin-Fawler method in statistical physics. Our main result is the derivation of asymptotic formulae for probabilities of clusters (= groups) of certain sizes as the number of particles goes to infinity. Based on these formulae we prove the zero-one law for the distribution of the largest cluster and establish the threshold function in the phase transition from 0 to 1 in th…
Let $A_m^{(1)},\ldots, A_m^{(k)}$ be $m\times m$ left-uppermost blocks of $k$ independent $n\times n$ Haar unitary matrices where $\frac{n}{m}\to α$ as $m\to \infty$, with $1<α<\infty$. Using free probability and Brown measure techniques, we find the limiting spectral distribution of $A_m^{(1)}\cdots A_m^{(k)}$.
We obtain probability measures on the canonical space penalizing the Wiener measure by a function of its maximum (resp. minimum, local time). We study the law of the canonical process under these new probability measures.
We show that the empirical eigenvalue measure for sum of $d$ independent Haar distributed $n$-dimensional unitary matrices, converge for $n \to \infty$ to the Brown measure of the free sum of $d$ Haar unitary operators. The same applies for independent Haar distributed $n$-dimensional orthogonal matrices. As a byproduct of our approach, we relax the requirement of uniformly bounded imaginary part of Stieltjes transform of $T_n$ that is made in [Guionnet, Krishnapur, Zeitouni; Theorem 1].
We determine the rate of decay of the expectation Z(t) of some multiplicative functional related to Brownian motion up to time t. This permits to prove that the Wiener measure, penalized by this multiplicative functional, converges as t goes to infinity to a probability measure (p.m.) . We obtain the law of the canonical process under this new p.m.

In this note, we make explicit the law of the renormalized supercritical branching random walk, giving credit to a conjecture formulated in a previous works of the authors for a continuous analog of the branching random walk. Also, in the case of a branching random walk on a homogeneous tree, we express the law of the corresponding limiting renormalized Gibbs measures, confirming, in this discrete model, conjectures formulated by physicists about the Poisson-Dirichlet nature of the jumps in the limit, and precising the conjecture by giving the spatial distribution of these jumps.
We study the densities of limiting distributions of squared singular values of high-dimensional matrix products composed of independent complex Gaussian (complex Ginibre) and truncated unitary matrices which are taken from Haar distributed unitary matrices with appropriate dimensional growth. In the general case we develop a new approach to obtain complex integral representations for densities of measures whose Stieltjes transforms satisfy algebraic equations of a certain type. In the special cases in which at most one factor of the product is a complex Gaussian we derive elementary expression…
Results of penalization of a one-dimensional Brownian motion $(X_t) $, by its one-sided maximum $\dis (S_t=\sup_{0 \leq u \leq t}X_u)$, which were recently obtained by the authors are improved with the consideration-in the present paper- of the asymptotic behaviour of the likewise penalized Brownian bridges of length $t$, as $t\to \infty$, or penalizations by functions of $(S_t,X_t)$, and also the study of the speed of convergence, as $t\to \infty$, of the penalized distributions at time $t$.
We are going to study the limiting spectral measure of fixed dimensional Hermitian block-matrices with large dimensional Wigner blocks. We are going also to identify the limiting spectral measure when the Hermitian block-structure is Circulant. Using the limiting spectral measure of a Hermitian Circulant block-matrix we will show that the spectral measure of a Wigner matrix with $k-$weakly dependent entries need not to be the semicircle law in the limit.
We study some limit theorems for the normalized law of integrated Brownian motion perturbed by several examples of functionals: the first passage time, the nth passage time, the last passage time up to a finite horizon and the supremum. We show that the penalization principle holds in all these cases and give descriptions of the conditioned processes. In particular, it is remarkable that the penalization by the nth passage time is independent of n, and always gives the same conditioned process, i.e. integrated Brownian motion conditioned not to hit 0. Our results rely on some explicit formulae…
We investigate large deviations for a family of conservative stochastic PDEs (conservation laws) in the asymptotic of jointly vanishing noise and viscosity. We obtain a first large deviations principle in a space of Young measures. The associated rate functional vanishes on a wide set, the so-called set of measure-valued solutions to the limiting conservation law. We therefore investigate a second order large deviations principle, thus providing a quantitative characterization of non-entropic solutions to the conservation law.
Consider a truncated circular unitary matrix which is a $p_n$ by $p_n$ submatrix of an $n$ by $n$ circular unitary matrix after deleting the last $n-p_n$ columns and rows. Jiang and Qi \cite{JiangQi2017} and Gui and Qi \cite{GQ2018} study the limiting distributions of the maximum absolute value of the eigenvalues (known as spectral radius) of the truncated matrix. Some limiting distributions for the spectral radius for the truncated circular unitary matrix have been obtained under the following conditions: (1). $p_n/n$ is bounded away from $0$ and $1$; (2). $p_n\to\infty$ and $p_n/n\to 0$ as $…
We demonstrate the convergence of the characteristic polynomial of several random matrix ensembles to a limiting universal function, at the microscopic scale. The random matrix ensembles we treat are classical compact groups and the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble. In fact, the result is the by-product of a general limit theorem for the convergence of random entire functions whose zeros present a simple regularity property.
We study several matrix diffusion processes constructed from a unitary Brownian motion. In particular, we use the Stiefel fibration to lift the Brownian motion of the complex Grassmannian to the complex Stiefel manifold and deduce a skew-product decomposition of the Stiefel Brownian motion. As an application, we prove asymptotic laws for the determinants of the block entries of the unitary Brownian motion.
For a broad class of unitary ensembles of random matrices we demonstrate the universal nature of the Janossy densities of eigenvalues near the spectral edge, providing a different formulation of the probability distributions of the limiting second, third, etc. largest eigenvalues of the ensembles in question. The approach is based on a representation of the Janossy densities in terms of a system of orthogonal polynomials, plus the steepest descent method of Deift and Zhou for the asymptotic analysis of the associated Riemann-Hilbert problem.
We show that the Laplace transforms of traces of words in independant unitary Brownian motions converge towards an analytic function on a non trivial disc. This results allow to study asymptotics of Wilson loops under the unitary Yang-Mills measure on the plane. The limiting objects obtained are shown to be characterized by equations analog to Schwinger-Dyson's ones, named here after Makeenko and Migdal.
We establish high probability estimates on the eigenvalue locations of Brownian motion on the $N$-dimensional unitary group, as well as estimates on the number of eigenvalues lying in any interval on the unit circle. These estimates are optimal up to arbitrarily small polynomial factors in $N$. Our results hold at the spectral edges (showing that the extremal eigenvalues are within $\mathcal{O} (N^{-2/3+})$ of the edges of the limiting spectral measure), in the spectral bulk, as well as for times near $4$ at which point the limiting spectral measure forms a cusp. Our methods are dynamical and …
We study asymptotics of traces of (noncommutative) monomials formed by images of certain elements of the universal enveloping algebra of the infinite-dimensional unitary group in its Plancherel representations. We prove that they converge to (commutative) moments of a Gaussian process that can be viewed as a collection of simply yet nontrivially correlated two-dimensional Gaussian Free Fields. The limiting process has previously arisen via the global scaling limit of spectra for submatrices of Wigner Hermitian random matrices. This note is an announcement, proofs will appear elsewhere.
We show that the limiting minimal eigenvalue distributions for a natural generalization of Gaussian sample-covariance structures (the "beta ensembles") are described by the spectrum of a random diffusion generator. By a Riccati transformation, we obtain a second diffusion description of the limiting eigenvalues in terms of hitting laws. This picture pertains to the so-called hard edge of random matrix theory and sits in complement to the recent work of the authors and B. Virag on the general beta random matrix soft edge. In fact, the diffusion descriptions found on both sides are used here to …
We prove that multidimensional diffusions in random environment have a limiting velocity which takes at most two different values. Further, in the two-dimensional case we show that for any direction, the probability to escape to infinity in this direction equals either zero or one. Combined with our results on the limiting velocity, this implies a strong law of large numbers in two dimensions.
This paper deals with products and ratios of average characteristic polynomials for unitary ensembles. We prove universality at the soft edge of the limiting eigenvalues' density, and write the universal limit in function of the Kontsevich matrix model ("matrix Airy function", as originally named by Kontsevich). For the case of the hard edge, universality is already known. We show that also in this case the universal limit can be expressed as a matrix integral ("matrix Bessel function") known in the literature as generalized Kontsevich matrix model.
This paper studies the extreme gaps between eigenvalues of random matrices. We give the joint limiting law of the smallest gaps for Haar-distributed unitary matrices and matrices from the Gaussian unitary ensemble. In particular, the kth smallest gap, normalized by a factor $n^{-4/3}$, has a limiting density proportional to $x^{3k-1}e^{-x^3}$. Concerning the largest gaps, normalized by $n/\sqrt{\log n}$, they converge in ${\mathrm{L}}^p$ to a constant for all $p>0$. These results are compared with the extreme gaps between zeros of the Riemann zeta function.
We identify a close relation between stable distributions and the limiting homomorphisms central to the theory of regular variation. In so doing some simplifications are achieved in the direct analysis of these laws in Pitman and Pitman (2016); stable distributions are themselves linked to homomorphy.
A famous result going back to Eric Kostlan states that the moduli of the eigenvalues of random normal matrices with radial potential are independent yet non identically distributed. This phenomenon is at the heart of the asymptotic analysis of the edge, and leads in particular to the Gumbel fluctuation of the spectral radius when the potential is quadratic. In the present work, we show that a wide variety of laws of fluctuation are possible, beyond the already known cases, including for instance Gumbel and exponential laws at unusual speeds. We study the convergence in law of the spectral radi…
We consider the empirical eigenvalue distribution of an $m\times m$ principle submatrix of an $n\times n$ random unitary matrix distributed according to Haar measure. Earlier work of Petz and Réffy identified the limiting spectral measure if $\frac{m}{n}\toα$, as $n\to\infty$; under suitable scaling, the family $\{μ_α\}_{α\in(0,1)}$ of limiting measures interpolates between uniform measure on the unit disc (for small $α$) and uniform measure on the unit circle (as $α\to1$). In this note, we prove an explicit concentration inequality which shows that for fixed $n$ and $m$, the bounded-Lipschitz…
This paper finds the bulk local limit of the swap process of uniformly random sorting networks. The limit object is defined through a deterministic procedure, a local version of the Edelman-Greene algorithm, applied to a two dimensional determinantal point process with explicit kernel. The latter describes the asymptotic joint law near $0$ of the eigenvalues of the corners in the antisymmetric Gaussian Unitary Ensemble. In particular, the limiting law of the first time a given swap appears in a random sorting network is identified with the limiting distribution of the closest to $0$ eigenvalue…
We study the limiting behavior of the $k$-th eigenvalue $x_k$ of unitary invariant ensembles with Freud-type and uniform convex potentials. As both $k$ and $n-k$ tend to infinity, we obtain Gaussian fluctuations for $x_k$ in the bulk and soft edge cases, respectively. Multi-dimensional central limit theorems, as well as moderate deviations, are also proved. This work generalizes earlier results in the GUE and unitary invariant ensembles with monomial potentials of even degree. In particular, we obtain the precise asymptotics of corresponding Christoffel-Darboux kernels as well.
Consider the random matrix model $A^{1/2} UBU^* A^{1/2},$ where $A$ and $B$ are two $N \times N$ deterministic matrices and $U$ is either an $N \times N$ Haar unitary or orthogonal random matrix. It is well-known that on the macroscopic scale, the limiting empirical spectral distribution (ESD) of the above model is given by the free multiplicative convolution of the limiting ESDs of $A$ and $B,$ denoted as $μ_α\boxtimes μ_β,$ where $μ_α$ and $μ_β$ are the limiting ESDs of $A$ and $B,$ respectively. In this paper, we study the asymptotic microscopic behavior of the edge eigenvalues and eigenvec…
Motivated by the two-parameter free unitary Segal-Bargmann transform in the form of conditional expectation, we derive the integral transform representation of the two-parameter free unitary Segal-Bargmann transform which coincides to the large-$N$ limit of the two-parameter Segal-Bargmann transform on the unitary group $\mathbb{U}(N)$ and explore its limiting behavior. We also extend the notion of circular systems in order to define a two-parameter free Segal-Bargmann transform and prove a version of Biane-Gross-Malliavin Theorem of the two-parameter free unitary Segal-Bargmann transform.
We study the large-$N$ limit of the Segal--Bargmann transform on $S^{N-1}(\sqrt N)$, the $(N-1)$-dimensional sphere of radius $\sqrt N$, as a unitary map from the space of square-integrable functions with respect to the normalized spherical measure onto the space of holomorphic square-integrable functions with respect to a certain measure on the quadric. In particular, we give an explicit formulation and describe the geometric models for the limit of the domain, the limit of the range, and the limit of the transform when $N$ tends to infinity. We show that the limiting transform is still a uni…
In this paper we study the limiting distribution of the $k$ smallest gaps between eigenvalues of three kinds of random matrices -- the Ginibre ensemble, the Wishart ensemble and the universal unitary ensemble. All of them follow a Poissonian ansatz. More precisely, for the Ginibre ensemble we have a global result in which the $k$-th smallest gap has typical length $n^{-3/4}$ with density $x^{4k-1}e^{-x^4}$ after normalization. For the Wishart and the universal unitary ensemble, it has typical length $n^{-4/3}$ and has density $x^{3k-1}e^{-x^3}$ after normalization.
We show in this paper that, when properly rescaled in time and in space, the characteristic polynomial of a random unitary matrix converges almost surely to a random analytic function whose zeros, which are on the real line, form a determinantal point process with sine kernel. We prove this result in the framework of virtual isometries to circumvent the fact that the rescaled characteristic polynomial does not even have a moment of order one, hence making the classical techniques of random matrix theory difficult to apply.
A quantum walker moves on the integers with four extra degrees of freedom, performing a coin-shift operation to alter its internal state and position at discrete units of time. The time evolution is described by a unitary process. We focus on finding the limit probability law for the position of the walker and study it by means of Fourier analysis. The quantum walker exhibits both localization and a ballistic behavior. Our two results are given as limit theorems for a 2-period time-dependent walk and they describe the location of the walker after it has repeated the unitary process a large num…
Let $\mathcal G$ be an addable, minor-closed class of graphs. We prove that the zero-one law holds in monadic second-order logic (MSO) for the random graph drawn uniformly at random from all {\em connected} graphs in $\mathcal G$ on $n$ vertices, and the convergence law in MSO holds if we draw uniformly at random from all graphs in $\mathcal G$ on $n$ vertices. We also prove analogues of these results for the class of graphs embeddable on a fixed surface, provided we restrict attention to first order logic (FO). Moreover, the limiting probability that a given FO sentence is satisfied is indepe…
This paper is concerned with the limit laws of the extreme order statistics derived from a symmetric Laplace walk. We provide two different descriptions of the point process of the limiting extreme order statistics: a branching representation and a squared Bessel representation. These complementary descriptions expose various hidden symmetries in branching processes and Brownian motion which lie behind some striking formulas found by Schehr and Majumdar (Phys. Rev. Lett., 108:040601). In particular, the Bessel process of dimension $4 = 2+2$ appears in the descriptions as a path decomposition o…
This paper studies the empirical measures of eigenvalues and singular values for random matrices drawn from the heat kernel measures on the unitary groups $\mathbb{U}_N$ and the general linear groups $\mathbb{GL}_N$, for $N\in\mathbb{N}$. It establishes the strongest known convergence results for the empirical eigenvalues in the $\mathbb{U}_N$ case, and the first known almost sure convergence results for the eigenvalues and singular values in the $\mathbb{GL}_N$ case. The limit noncommutative distribution associated to the heat kernel measure on $\mathbb{GL}_N$ is identified as the projection …
Based on the multivariate saddle point method we study the asymptotic behavior of the characteristic polynomials associated to Wishart type random matrices that are formed as products consisting of independent standard complex Gaussian and a truncated Haar distributed unitary random matrix. These polynomials form a general class of hypergeometric functions of type \(_2 F_r\). We describe the oscillatory behavior on the asymptotic interval of zeros by means of formulae of Plancherel-Rotach type and subsequently use it to obtain the limiting distribution of the suitably rescaled zeros. Moreover,…
We characterize the limiting smallest eigenvalue distributions (or hard edge laws) for sample covariance type matrices drawn from a spiked population. In the case of a single spike, the results are valid in the context of the general beta ensembles. For multiple spikes, the necessary construction restricts matters to real, complex or quaternion (beta=1, 2, or 4) ensembles. The limit laws are described in terms of a random integral operators, and partial differential equations satisfied by the corresponding distribution functions are derived as corollaries. We also show that, under a natural li…
Let F be a family of Borel measurable functions on a complete separable metric space. The gap (or fat-shattering) dimension of F is a combinatorial quantity that measures the extent to which functions f in F can separate finite sets of points at a predefined resolution gamma > 0. We establish a connection between the gap dimension of F and the uniform convergence of its sample averages under ergodic sampling. In particular, we show that if the gap dimension of F at resolution gamma > 0 is finite, then for every ergodic process the sample averages of functions in F are eventually within 10 gamm…
We study limit distributions for random variables defined in terms of coefficients of a power series which is determined by a certain linear functional equation. Our technique combines the method of moments with the kernel method of algebraic combinatorics. As limiting distributions the area distributions of the Brownian excursion and meander occur. As combinatorial applications we compute the area laws for discrete excursions and meanders with an arbitrary finite set of steps and the area distribution of column convex polyominoes. As a by-product of our approach we find the joint distribution…
Let $U$ be a random unitary matrix drawn from the Hua-Pickrell distribution $μ_{\mathrm{U}(n+m)}^{(δ)}$ on the unitary group $\mathrm{U}(n+m)$. We show that the eigenvalues of the truncated unitary matrix $[U_{i,j}]_{1\leq i,j\leq n}$ form a determinantal point process $\mathscr{X}_n^{(m,δ)}$ on the unit disc $\mathbb{D}$ for any $δ\in\mathbb{C}$ satisfying $\mathrm{Re}\,δ>-1/2$. We also prove that the limiting point process taken by $n\to\infty$ of the determinantal point process $\mathscr{X}_n^{(m,δ)}$ is always $\mathscr{X}^{[m]}$, independent of $δ$. Here $\mathscr{X}^{[m]}$ is the determi…
This paper is concerned with certain connections between the ensemble of n x n unitary matrices -- specifically the characteristic function of the random variable tr(U) -- and combinatorics -- specifically Ulam's problem concerning the distribution of the length of the longest increasing subsequence in permutation groups -- and the appearance of Painleve functions in the answers to apparently unrelated questions. Among the results is a representation in terms of a Painleve V function for the characteristic function of tr(U) and (using recent results of Baik, Deift and Johansson) an expression …
