Let F be a family of Borel measurable functions on a complete separable metric space. The gap (or fat-shattering) dimension of F is a combinatorial quantity that measures the extent to which functions f in F can separate finite sets of points at a predefined resolution gamma > 0. We establish a connection between the gap dimension of F and the uniform convergence of its sample averages under ergodic sampling. In particular, we show that if the gap dimension of F at resolution gamma > 0 is finite, then for every ergodic process the sample averages of functions in F are eventually within 10 gamma of their limiting expectations uniformly over the class F. If the gap dimension of F is finite for every resolution gamma > 0 then the sample averages of functions in F converge uniformly to their limiting expectations. We assume only that F is uniformly bounded and countable (or countably approximable). No smoothness conditions are placed on F, and no assumptions beyond ergodicity are placed on the sampling processes. Our results extend existing work for i.i.d. processes.
A more general notion of weight called admissible is introduced and then an investigation is carried out on the a.e. convergence of weighted strong laws of large numbers and their applications to weighted one-sided ergodic Hilbert transforms on vector-valued $L_p$-spaces. Furthermore, the obtained results are applied to the a.e. convergence of random modulated weighted ergodic series, which is also new in the classical setting.
We prove that the joint distribution of the occupation time ratios for ergodic transformations preserving an infinite measure converges to a multidimensional version of Lamperti's generalized arcsine distribution, in the sense of strong distributional convergence. Our results can be applied to interval maps and Markov chains. We adopt the double Laplace transform method, which has been utilized in the study of occupation times of diffusions on multiray. We also discuss the inverse problem.
We study the dynamics of erasing randomly chosen letters from words by introducing a certain class of discrete-time stochastic processes, general erased-word processes(GEWPs), and investigating three closely related topics: Representation, Martin boundary and filtration theory. We use de Finetti's theorem and the random exchangeable linear order to obtain a de Finetti-type representation of GEWPs involving induced order statistics. Our studies expose connections between exchangeability theory and certain poly-adic filtrations that can be found in other exchangeable random objects as well. We s…
We study ergodic properties of stochastic dissipative systems with additive noise. We show that the system is uniformly exponentially ergodic provided the growth of nonlinearity at infinity is faster than linear. The abstract result is applied to the stochastic reaction diffusion equation in $\mathbb R^d$ with $d\le 3$.
In this paper the stability and the perturbation bounds of Markov operators acting on abstract state spaces are investigated. Here, an abstract state space is an ordered Banach space where the norm has an additivity property on the cone of positive elements. We basically study uniform ergodic properties of Markov operators by means of so-called a generalized Dobrushin's ergodicity coefficient. This allows us to get several convergence results with rates. Some results on quasi-compactness of Markov operators are proved in terms of the ergodicity coefficient. Furthermore, a characterization of u…
The particle Gibbs (PG) sampler is a systematic way of using a particle filter within Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). This results in an off-the-shelf Markov kernel on the space of state trajectories, which can be used to simulate from the full joint smoothing distribution for a state space model in an MCMC scheme. We show that the PG Markov kernel is uniformly ergodic under rather general assumptions, that we will carefully review and discuss. In particular, we provide an explicit rate of convergence which reveals that: (i) for fixed number of data points, the convergence rate can be made ar…
The main substance of the paper concerns the growth rate and the classification (ergodicity, transience) of a family of random trees. In the basic model, new edges appear according to a Poisson process of parameter $λ$ and leaves can be deleted at a rate $μ$. The main results lay the stress on the famous number $e$. A complete classification of the process is given in terms of the intensity factor $ρ=λ/μ$: it is ergodic if $ρ\leq e^{-1}$, and transient if $ρ>e^{-1}$. There is a phase transition phenomenon: the usual region of null recurrence (in the parameter space) here does not exist. This f…
In this paper a concentration inequality is proved for the deviation in the ergodic theorem in the case of discrete time observations of diffusion processes. The proof is based on the geometric ergodicity property for diffusion processes. As an application we consider the nonparametric pointwise estimation problem for the drift coefficient under discrete time observations.
In this paper we find nonasymptotic exponential upper bounds for the deviation in the ergodic theorem for families of homogeneous Markov processes. We find some sufficient conditions for geometric ergodicity uniformly over a parametric family. We apply this property to the nonasymptotic nonparametric estimation problem for ergodic diffusion processes.
We prove that ergodic measures on one-sided shift spaces are uniformly scaling in the sense of Gavish. That is, given a shift ergodic measure we prove that at almost every point the scenery distributions weakly converge to a common distribution on the space of measures. Moreover, we give an explicit description of the limiting distribution in terms of a `reverse Jacobian' function associated with the corresponding measure on the space of left infinite sequences.
We prove that bootstrap type Monte Carlo particle filters approximate the optimal nonlinear filter in a time average sense uniformly with respect to the time horizon when the signal is ergodic and the particle system satisfies a tightness property. The latter is satisfied without further assumptions when the signal state space is compact, as well as in the noncompact setting when the signal is geometrically ergodic and the observations satisfy additional regularity assumptions.
In this paper, we establish uniform-in-bandwidth limit laws of the logarithm for nonparametric Inverse Probability of Censoring Weighted (I.P.C.W.) estimators of the multivariate regression function under random censorship. A similar result is deduced for estimators of the conditional distribution function. The uniform-in-bandwidth consistency for estimators of the conditional density and the conditional hazard rate functions are also derived from our main result. Moreover, the logarithm laws we establish are shown to yield almost sure simultaneous asymptotic confidence bands for the functions…
We show that if $\mathcal{X}$ is a complete separable metric space and $\mathcal{C}$ is a countable family of Borel subsets of $\mathcal{X}$ with finite VC dimension, then, for every stationary ergodic process with values in $\mathcal{X}$, the relative frequencies of sets $C\in\mathcal{C}$ converge uniformly to their limiting probabilities. Beyond ergodicity, no assumptions are imposed on the sampling process, and no regularity conditions are imposed on the elements of $\mathcal{C}$. The result extends existing work of Vapnik and Chervonenkis, among others, who have studied uniform convergence…
We construct a stationary ergodic process $X_1, X_2, \ldots $ such that each $X_t$ has the uniform distribution on the unit square and the length $L_n$ of the shortest path through the points $X_1, X_2, \ldots,X_n$ is not asymptotic to a constant times the square root of $n$. In other words, we show that the Beardwood, Halton and Hammersley theorem does not extend from the case of independent uniformly distributed random variables to the case of stationary ergodic sequences with uniform marginal distributions.
We discuss a Markov jump process regarded as a variant of the CIR (Cox-Ingersoll-Ross) model and its infinite-dimensional extension. These models belong to a class of measure-valued branching processes with immigration, whose jump mechanisms are governed by certain stable laws. The main result gives a lower spectral gap estimate for the generator. As an application, a certain ergodic property is shown for the generalized Fleming-Viot process obtained as the time-changed ratio process.
In this paper one presents the extension of the transient analysis of the class of continuous-time birth and death processes defined on non-negative integers with special transitions from and to the origin. From the origin transitions can occur to any state. But being in any other state, besides ordinary transitions to neighbouring states, a transition to the origin can occur. All possible transition intensities are assumed to be non-random functions of time and may depend on the state of the process. We improve previously known ergodicity and truncation bounds for this class of processes whic…
In this paper, we studied the functional ergodic limits of the site-dependent branching Brownian motions in R. The results show that the limiting processes are non-degenerate if and only if the variance functions of branching laws are integrable. When the functions are integrable, although the limiting processes will vary according to the integrals, they are always positive, infinitely divisible and self-similar, and their marginal distributions are determined by a kind of 1/2-fractional integral equations. As a byproduct, the unique non-negative solutions of the integral equations are explici…
The first aim of the present note is to quantify the speed of convergence of a conditioned process toward its Q-process under suitable assumptions on the quasi-stationary distribution of the process. Conversely, we prove that, if a conditioned process converges uniformly to a conservative Markov process which is itself ergodic, then it admits a unique quasi-stationary distribution and converges toward it exponentially fast, uniformly in its initial distribution. As an application, we provide a conditional ergodic theorem.
We consider conservative ergodic measure preserving transformations on infinite measure spaces and investigate the asymptotic behaviour of distorted return time processes with respect to sets satisfying a type of Darling-Kac condition. We identify two critical cases for which we prove uniform distribution laws. For this we introduce the notion of uniformly returning sets and discuss some of their properties.
We study the ergodic properties of a class of controlled stochastic differential equations (SDEs) driven by $α$-stable processes which arise as the limiting equations of multiclass queueing models in the Halfin-Whitt regime that have heavy-tailed arrival processes. When the safety staffing parameter is positive, we show that the SDEs are uniformly ergodic and enjoy a polynomial rate of convergence to the invariant probability measure in total variation, which is uniform over all stationary Markov controls resulting in a locally Lipschitz continuous drift. We also derive a matching lower bound …
