We develop direct and inverse scattering theory for Jacobi operators with steplike quasi-periodic finite-gap background in the same isospectral class. We derive the corresponding Gel'fand-Levitan-Marchenko equation and find minimal scattering data which determine the perturbed operator uniquely. In addition, we show how the transmission coefficients can be reconstructed from the eigenvalues and one of the reflection coefficients.
We develop direct and inverse scattering theory for Jacobi operators with steplike coefficients which are asymptotically close to different finite-gap quasi-periodic coefficients on different sides. We give a complete characterization of the scattering data, which allow unique solvability of the inverse scattering problem in the class of perturbations with finite first moment.
We develop direct and inverse scattering theory for one-dimensional Schroedinger operators with steplike potentials which are asymptotically close to different finite-gap periodic potentials on different half-axes. We give a complete characterization of the scattering data, which allow unique solvability of the inverse scattering problem in the class of perturbations with finite second moment.
We develop direct scattering theory for one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with steplike potentials, which are asymptotically close to different Bohr almost periodic infinite-gap potentials on different half-axes.
We develop direct and inverse scattering theory for Jacobi operators (doubly infinite second order difference operators) with steplike coefficients which are asymptotically close to different finite-gap quasi-periodic coefficients on different sides. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the scattering data in the case of perturbations with finite second (or higher) moment.
In this expository work, we collect some background results and give a short proof of the following theorem: periodic Jacobi matrices on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ exhibit strong ballistic motion.
Our main result asserts that a certain natural non-linear operator on Jacobi matrices built by a hyperbolic polynomial with real Julia set is a contraction in operator norm if the polynomial is sufficiently hyperbolic. This allows us to get for such polynomials the solution of a problem of Bellissard, in other words, to prove the limit periodicity of the limit Jacobi matrix. This fact does not require the iteration of the same fixed polynomial, and therefore it gives a wide class of limit periodic Jacobi matrices with singular continuous spectrum.
In this work we build a certain machine that allows to construct almost periodic Jacobi matrices with singularly continuous spectrum a prescribed p-adic hull.
We consider the 1D periodic Jacobi matrices. The spectrum of this operator is purely absolutely continuous and consists of intervals separated by gaps. We solve the inverse problem (including characterization) in terms of vertical slits on the quasimomentum domain . Furthermore, we obtain a priori two-sided estimates for vertical slits in terms of Jacoby matrices.
We consider matrices on infinite trees which are universal covers of Jacobi matrices on finite graphs. We are interested in the question of the existence of sequences of finite covers whose normalized eigenvalue counting measures converge to the density of states of the operator on the infinite tree. We first of all construct a simple example where this convergence fails and then discuss two ways of constructing the required sequences: with random boundary conditions and through normal subgroups.
We find a necessary and sufficient condition for a Herglotz function $m$ to be the Borel transform of the spectral measure of an exponentially decaying perturbation of a periodic Jacobi matrix. The condition is in terms of meromorphic continuation of $m$ to a natural Riemann surface and the structure of its zeros and poles. The analogous result is also established for the Borel transform of the spectral measure of eventually periodic Jacobi matrices. This paper generalizes the corresponding result from [17] for exponentially decaying perturbations of the free Jacobi matrix.
We show Hölder continuity for the integrated density of states of a quasi-periodic Jacobi operator with analytic coefficients, in the regime of positive Lyapunov exponent and with a strong Diophantine condition on the frequency. In particular, when the coefficients are trigonometric polynomials we express the Hölder exponent in terms of the degrees of the coefficients.
We consider periodic matrix-valued Jacobi operators. The spectrum of this operator is absolutely continuous and consists of intervals separated by gaps. We define the Lyapunov function, which is analytic on an associated Riemann surface. On each sheet the Lyapunov function has the standard properties of the Lyapunov function for the scalar case. We show that this function has (real or complex) branch points, which we call resonances. We prove that there exist two types of gaps: i) stable gaps, i.e., the endpoints are periodic and anti-periodic eigenvalues, ii) unstable (resonance) gaps, i.e., …
We consider a one-frequency, quasi-periodic, block Jacobi operator, whose blocks are generic matrix-valued analytic functions. We establish Anderson localization for this type of operator under the assumption that the coupling constant is large enough but independent of the frequency. This generalizes a result of J. Bourgain and S. Jitomirskaya on localization for band lattice, quasi-periodic Schroedinger operators.
We study self-adjoint bounded Jacobi operators of the form: (J ψ)(n) = a_n ψ(n + 1) + b_n ψ(n) +a_{n-1} ψ(n - 1) on $\ell^2(\N)$. We assume that for some fixed q, the q-variation of $\{a_n\}$ and $\{b_n\}$ is square-summable and $\{a_n\}$ and $\{b_n\}$ converge to q-periodic sequences. Our main result is that under these assumptions the essential support of the absolutely continuous part of the spectrum of J is equal to that of the asymptotic periodic Jacobi operator. This work is an extension of a recent result of S.A.Denisov.
We consider a periodic Jacobi operator $H$ with finitely supported perturbations on ${\Bbb Z}.$ We solve the inverse resonance problem: we prove that the mapping from finitely supported perturbations to the scattering data: the inverse of the transmission coefficient and the Jost function on the right half-axis, is one-to-one and onto. We consider the problem of reconstruction of the scattering data from all eigenvalues, resonances and the set of zeros of $R_-(λ)+1,$ where $R_-$ is the reflection coefficient.
We describe the spectral properties of the Jacobi operator $(Hy)_n= a_{n-1} y_{n-1}+a_{n}y_{n+1}+b_ny_n,$ $n\in\Z,$ with $a_n=a_n^0+ u_n,$ $b_n= b_n^0+ v_n,$ where sequences $a_n^0>0,$ $b_n^0\in\R$ are periodic with period $q$, and sequences $ u_n,$ $ v_n$ have compact support. In the case $ u_n\equiv 0$ we obtain the asymptotics of the spectrum in the limit of small perturbations $ v_n.$
We consider the periodic Jacobi operator $J$ with finitely supported perturbations on the half-lattice. We describe all eigenvalues and resonances of $J$ and give their properties. We solve the inverse resonance problem: we prove that the mapping from finitely supported perturbations to the Jost functions is one-to-one and onto, we show how the Jost functions can be reconstructed from the eigenvalues, resonances and the set of zeros of $S(ł)-1,$ where $S(ł)$ is the scattering matrix.
We investigate quantum dynamics with the underlying Hamiltonian being a Jacobi or a block Jacobi matrix with the diagonal and the off-diagonal terms modulated by a periodic or a limit-periodic sequence. In particular, we investigate the transport exponents. In the periodic case we demonstrate ballistic transport, while in the limit-periodic case we discuss various phenomena such as quasi-ballistic transport and weak dynamical localization. We also present applications to some quantum many body problems. In particular, we establish for the anisotropic XY chain on $\mathbb{Z}$ with periodic para…
We are interested in diagonal perturbations of a periodic Jacobi operator that introduce embedded eigenvalues in its essential spectrum. Embedding multiple points in the essential spectrum has been known to be difficult, given that eigenvalues are destroyed easily by small perturbations. However, given a finite or countably infinite set of points within an absolutely continuous band of the original periodic operator (subject only to a very weak non-resonance condition) we are able to construct a diagonal perturbation that preserves the essential spectrum and places eigenvalues in all of those …
We characterize the spectrum of one-dimensional Jacobi operators H=aS^{+}+a^{-}S^{-}+b in l^{2}(\Z) with quasi-periodic complex-valued algebro-geometric coefficients (which satisfy one (and hence infinitely many) equation(s) of the stationary Toda hierarchy) associated with nonsingular hyperelliptic curves. The spectrum of H coincides with the conditional stability set of H and can explicitly be described in terms of the mean value of the Green's function of H. As a result, the spectrum of H consists of finitely many simple analytic arcs in the complex plane. Crossings as well as confluences o…
We obtain bounds for the spectrum and for the total width of the spectral gaps for Jacobi matrices on $\ell^2(\Z)$ of the form $(Hψ)_n= a_{n-1}ψ_{n-1}+b_nψ_n+a_nψ_{n+1}$, where $a_n=a_{n+q}$ and $b_n=b_{n+q}$ are periodic sequences of real numbers. The results are based on a study of the quasimomentum $k(z)$ corresponding to $H$. We consider $k(z)$ as a conformal mapping in the complex plane. We obtain the trace identities which connect integrals of the Lyapunov exponent over the gaps with the normalised traces of powers of $H$.
For the periodic matrix-valued Jacobi operator $J$ we obtain the estimate of the Lebesgue measure of the spectrum $|\s(J)|\le4 \min_n\Tr(a_na_n^*)^\frac12$, where $a_n$ are off-diagonal elements of $J$. Moreover estimates of width of spectral bands are obtained.
Necessary and sufficient conditions are presented for a measure to be the spectral measure of a finite range or exponentially decaying perturbation of a periodic Jacobi operator. As a corollary we can fully solve the inverse resonance problem: given resonances and eigenvalues we can recover the spectral measure of the Jacobi operator; we provide necessary and sufficient conditions under which such an operator exists and is unique; and we show that the inverse resonance problem is stable under small perturbations.
We consider $C=A+B$ where $A$ is selfadjoint with a gap $(a,b)$ in its spectrum and $B$ is (relatively) compact. We prove a general result allowing $B$ of indefinite sign and apply it to obtain a $(δV)^{d/2}$ bound for perturbations of suitable periodic Schrodinger operators and a (not quite)Lieb-Thirring bound for perturbations of algebro-geometric almost periodic Jacobi matrices.
We consider the problem of embedding eigenvalues into the essential spectrum of periodic Jacobi operators, using an oscillating, decreasing potential. To do this we employ a geometric method, previously used to embed eigenvalues into the essential spectrum of the discrete Schrödinger operator. For periodic Jacobi operators we relax the rational dependence conditions on the values of the quasi-momenta from this previous work. We then explore conditions that permit not just the existence of infinitely many subordinate solutions to the formal spectral equation but also the embedding of infinitely…
For an arbitrary Hermitian period-$T$ Jacobi operator, we assume a perturbation by a Wigner-von Neumann type potential to devise subordinate solutions to the formal spectral equation for a (possibly infinite) real set, $S$, of the spectral parameter. We employ discrete Levinson type techniques to achieve this, which allow the analysis of the asymptotic behaviour of the solution. This enables us to construct infinitely many spectral singularities on the absolutely continuous spectrum of the periodic Jacobi operator, which are stable with respect to an $l^1$-perturbation. An analogue of the quan…
In this paper, we first study the strong Birkhoff Ergodic Theorem for subharmonic functions with the Brjuno-Rüssmann shift on the Torus. Then, we apply it to prove the large deviation theorems for the finite scale Dirichlet determinants of quasi-periodic analytic Jacobi operators with this frequency. It shows that the Brjuno-Rüssmann function, which reflects the irrationality of the frequency, plays the key role in these theorems via the smallest deviation. At last, as an application, we obtain a distribution of the eigenvalues of the Jacobi operators with Dirichlet boundary conditions, which …
We study Jacobi matrices that are uniformly approximated by periodic operators. We show that if the rate of approximation is sufficiently rapid, then the associated quantum dynamics are ballistic in a rather strong sense; namely, the (normalized) Heisenberg evolution of the position operator converges strongly to a self-adjoint operator that is injective on the space of absolutely summable sequences. In particular, this means that all transport exponents corresponding to well-localized initial states are equal to one. Our result may be applied to a class of quantum many-body problems. Specific…
We develop a spectral analysis of a class of block Jacobi operators based on the conjugate operator method of Mourre. We give several applications including scalar Jacobi operators with periodic coefficients, a class of difference operators on cylindrical domains such as discrete wave propagators, and certain fourth-order difference operators.
We study spectrum inclusion regions for complex Jacobi matrices which are compact perturbations of real periodic Jacobi matrices. The condition sufficient for the lack of discrete spectrum for such matrices is given
Prüfer variables are a standard tool in spectral theory, developed originally for perturbations of the free Schrödinger operator. They were generalized by Kiselev, Remling, and Simon to perturbations of an arbitrary Schrödinger operator. We adapt these generalized Prufer variables to the setting of Jacobi and Szegő recursions. We present an application to random $L^2$ perturbations of Jacobi and CMV matrices, and an application to decaying oscillatory perturbations of periodic Jacobi and CMV matrices.
We prove that on the spectrum the integrated density of states (IDS for short) of periodic Jacobi matrices is related to the discriminant. The method is to count the number of generalized zeros of Bloch wave solutions.
One of the first theorems in perturbation theory claims that for an arbitrary self-adjoint operator A there exists a perturbation B of Hilbert-Schmidt class, which destroys completely the absolutely continuous spectrum of A (von Neumann). However, if A is the discrete free 1-D Schrödinger operator and B is a Jacobi matrix the a.c. spectrum remains perfectly the same. Moreover, Killip and Simon described explicitly the spectral properties for such A+B. Jointly with Damanik they generalized this result to the case of perturbations of periodic Jacobi matrices. Recall that the spectrum of a period…
We present certain results on the direct and inverse spectral theory of the Jacobi operator with complex periodic coefficients. For instance, we show that any $N$-th degree polynomial whose leading coefficient is $(-1)^N$ is the Hill discriminant of finitely many discrete $N$-periodic Schrödinger operators (Theorem 1). Also, in the case where the spectrum is a closed interval we prove a result (Theorem 5) which is the analog of Borg's Theorem for the non-self-adjoint Jacobi case.
In this paper, we study block Jacobi operators on $\mathbb{Z}$ with quasi-periodic meromorphic potential. We prove the non-perturbative Anderson localization for such operators in the large coupling regime.
We look at periodic Jacobi matrices on trees. We provide upper and lower bounds on the gap of such operators analogous to the well known gap in the spectrum of the Laplacian on the upper half-plane with hyperbolic metric. We make some conjectures about antibound states and make an interesting observation for what [3] calls the rg-model.
We develop direct and inverse scattering theory for Jacobi operators which are short range perturbations of quasi-periodic finite-gap operators. We show existence of transformation operators, investigate their properties, derive the corresponding Gel'fand-Levitan-Marchenko equation, and find minimal scattering data which determine the perturbed operator uniquely.
A result of Borg--Hochstadt in the theory of periodic Jacobi matrices states that such a matrix has constant diagonals as long as all gaps in its spectrum are closed (have zero length). We suggest a quantitative version of this result by proving the two-sided bounds between oscillations of the matrix entries along the diagonals and the length of the maximal gap in the spectrum.
We study fractal dimension properties of singular Jacobi operators. We prove quantitative lower spectral/quantum dynamical bounds for general operators with strong repetition properties and controlled singularities. For analytic quasiperiodic Jacobi operators in the positive Lyapunov exponent regime, we obtain a sharp arithmetic criterion of full spectral dimensionality. The applications include the extended Harper's model where we obtain arithmetic results on spectral dimensions and quantum dynamical exponents.
Some inverse problems for semi-infinite periodic generalized Jacobi matrices are considered. In particular, a generalization of the Abel criterion is presented. The approach is based on the fact that the solvability of the Pell-Abel equation is equivalent to the existence of a certainly normalized $J$-unitary $2\times 2$-matrix polynomial (the monodromy matrix).
We study asymptotics of generalized eigenvectors associated with Jacobi matrices. Under weak conditions on the coefficients we identify when the matrices are self-adjoint and show that they satisfy strong non-subordinacy condition.
We construct a functional model (direct integral expansion) and study the spectra of certain periodic block-operator Jacobi matrices, in particular, of general 2D partial difference operators of the second order. We obtain the upper bound, optimal in a sense, for the Lebesgue measure of their spectra. The examples of the operators for which there are several gaps in the spectrum are given.
We recall criteria on the spectrum of Jacobi matrices such that the corresponding isospectral torus consists of periodic operators. Motivated by those known results for Jacobi matrices, we define a new class of operators called GMP matrices. They form a certain Generalization of matrices related to the strong Moment Problem. This class allows us to give a parametrization of almost periodic finite gap Jacobi matrices by periodic GMP matrices. Moreover, due to their structural similarity we can carry over numerous results from the direct and inverse spectral theory of periodic Jacobi matrices to…
We give formulas for the density of the measure of orthogonality for orthonormal polynomials with unbounded recurrence coefficients. The formulas involve limits of appropriately scaled Turán determinants or Christoffel functions. Exact asymptotics of the polynomials and numerical examples are also provided.
We present pretty detailed spectral analysis of Jacobi matrices with periodically modulated entries in the case when $0$ lies on the soft edge of the spectrum of the corresponding periodic Jacobi matrix. In particular, we show that the studied operators are always self-adjoint irrespective of the modulated sequence. Moreover, if the growth of the modulated sequence is superlinear, then the spectrum of the considered operators is always discrete. Finally, we study regular perturbations of this class in the linear and the sublinear cases. We impose conditions assuring that the spectrum is absolu…
This paper investigates the spectral properties of Jacobi matrices with limit-periodic coefficients. We show that for a residual set of such matrices, the spectrum is a Cantor set of zero Lebesgue measure, and the spectral measures are purely singular continuous. For a dense set of limit-periodic Jacobi matrices we can strengthen the result and show that the spectrum is a Cantor set of zero lower box counting dimension, and hence in particular of zero Hausdorff dimension, while still retaining the singular continuity of the spectral type. We also show how results of this nature can be establis…
We begin the systematic study of the spectral theory of periodic Jacobi matrices on trees including a formal definition. The most significant result that appears here for the first time is that these operators have no singular continuous spectrum. We review important previous results of Sunada and Aomoto and present several illuminating examples. We present many open problems and conjectures that we hope will stimulate further work.
We study the ground states of the one-dimensional non-self-adjoint Jacobi operators in the almost periodic media by using the method of dynamical systems. We show the existence of the ground state. Particularly, in the quasi-periodic media, we show that the lower regularity of coefficients can guarantee the existence of ground states. Besides that, we give two applications: the first application is to show the existence and uniqueness of the positive steady state of the discrete Fisher-KPP type equation; the second application is to investigate the asymptotic behavior of the discrete stationar…
In this paper, we first prove the strong Birkhoff Ergodic Theorem for subharmonic functions with the irrational shift on the Torus. Then, it is applied to the analytic quasi-periodic Jacobi cocycles. We show that if the Lyapunov exponent of these cocycles is positive at one point, then it is positive on an interval centered at this point for suitable frequency and coupling numbers. We also prove that the Lyapunov exponent is Hölder continuous in $E$ on this interval and calculate the expression of its length. What's more, if the coupling number of the potential is large, then the Lyapunov expo…
Necessary and sufficient conditions are presented for a measure to be the spectral measure of a finite range perturbation of a Jacobi or CMV operator from a finite gap isospectral torus. The special case of eventually periodic operators solves an open problem of Simon [25, D.2.7]. We also solve the inverse resonance problem: it is shown that an operator is completely determined by the set of its eigenvalues and resonances, and we provide necessary and sufficient conditions on their configuration for such an operator to exist.
