We give a sharp bound for the automorphism group of a cubic simple graph with a given number of vertices. For each number of vertices we give an explicit graph attaining the bound, and prove its uniqueness in special cases.
It was proved in [Y.-Q. Feng, C. H. Li and J.-X. Zhou, Symmetric cubic graphs with solvable automorphism groups, {\em European J. Combin.} {\bf 45} (2015), 1-11] that a cubic symmetric graph with a solvable automorphism group is either a Cayley graph or a $2$-regular graph of type $2^2$, that is, a graph with no automorphism of order $2$ interchanging two adjacent vertices. In this paper an infinite family of non-Cayley cubic $2$-regular graphs of type $2^2$ with a solvable automorphism group is constructed. The smallest graph in this family has order 6174.
We characterise connected cubic graphs admitting a vertex- transitive group of automorphisms with an abelian normal subgroup that is not semiregular. We illustrate the utility of this result by using it to prove that the order of a semiregular subgroup of maximum order in a vertex-transitive group of automorphisms of a connected cubic graph grows with the order of the graph.
The theory of voltage graphs has become a standard tool in the study graphs admitting a semiregular group of automorphisms. We introduce the notion of a cyclic generalised voltage graph to extend the scope of this theory to graphs admitting a cyclic group of automorphism that may not be semiregular. We use this new tool to classify all cubic graphs admitting a cyclic group of automorphisms with at most three vertex-orbits and we characterise vertextransitivity for each of these classes. In particular, we show that a cubic vertex-transitive graph admitting a cyclic group of automorphisms with a…
A connected graph of order $n$ admitting a semiregular automorphism of order $n/k$ is called a $k$-multicirculant. Highly symmetric multicirculants of small valency have been extensively studied, and several classification results exist for cubic vertex- and arc-transitive multicirculants. In this paper we study the broader class of cubic vertex-transitive graphs of order $n$ admitting an automorphism of order $n/3$ or larger that may not be semiregular. In particular, we show that any such graph is either a $k$-multicirculant for some $k \leq 3$, or it belongs to an infinite family of graphs …
Finite connected cubic symmetric graphs of girth 6 have been classified by K. Kutnar and D. Marušič, in particular, each of these graphs has an abelian automorphism group with two orbits on the vertex set. In this paper all cubic symmetric graphs with the latter property are determined. In particular, with the exception of the graphs K_4, K_{3,3}, Q_3, GP(5,2), GP(10,2), F40 and GP(24,5), all the obtained graphs are of girth 6.
Let $S_n$ denote the symmetric group of degree $n$ with $n\geq 3$. Set $S=\{c_n=(1\ 2\ldots \ n),c_n^{-1},(1\ 2)\}$. Let $Γ_n=\mathrm{Cay}(S_n,S)$ be the Cayley graph on $S_n$ with respect to $S$. In this paper, we show that $Γ_n$ ($n\geq 13$) is a normal Cayley graph, and that the full automorphism group of $Γ_n$ is equal to $\mathrm{Aut}(Γ_n)=R(S_n)\rtimes \langle\mathrm{Inn}(ϕ)\rangle\cong S_n\rtimes \mathbb{Z}_2$, where $R(S_n)$ is the right regular representation of $S_n$, $ϕ=(1\ 2)(3\ n)(4\ n-1)(5\ n-2)\cdots$ $(\in S_n)$, and $\mathrm{Inn}(ϕ)$ is the inner isomorphism of $S_n$ induced b…
A graph is said to be a bi-Cayley graph over a group H if it admits H as a group of automorphisms acting semiregularly on its vertices with two orbits. For a prime p, we call a bi-Cayley graph over a metacyclic p-group a bi-p-metacirculant. In this paper, the automorphism group of a connected cubic edge-transitive bi-p-metacirculant is characterized for an odd prime p, and the result reveals that a connected cubic edge-transitive bi-p-metacirculant exists only when p=3. Using this, a classification is given of connected cubic edge-transitive bi-Cayley graphs over an inner-abelian metacyclic 3-…

When dealing with symmetry properties of mathematical objects, one of the fundamental questions is to determine their full automorphism group. In this paper this question is considered in the context of even/odd permutations dichotomy. More precisely: when is it that existence of automorphisms acting as even permutations on the vertex set of a graph, called {\em even automorphisms}, forces existence of automorphisms that act as odd permutations, called {\em odd automorphisms}. As a first step towards resolving the above question, a complete information on existence of odd automorphisms in cubi…
We study the automorphism group of graphons (graph limits). We prove that after an appropriate "standardization" of the graphon, the automorphism group is compact. Furthermore, we characterize the orbits of the automorphism group on $k$-tuples of points. Among applications we study the graph algebras defined by finite rank graphons and the space of node-transitive graphons.
We prove a tropical analogue of the theorem of Hurwitz: a leafless metric graph of genus $g \ge 2$ has at most $12$ automorphisms when $g = 2$; $2^g g!$ automorphisms when $g \ge 3$. These inequalities are optimal; for each genus, we give all metric graphs which have the maximum numbers of automorphisms. The proof is written in terms of graph theory.
We prove that every finite arc-transitive graph of valency twice a prime admits a nontrivial semiregular automorphism, that is, a non-identity automorphism whose cycles all have the same length. This is a special case of the Polycirculant Conjecture, which states that all finite vertex-transitive digraphs admit such automorphisms.
We discuss the group of automorphisms of a general MR-algebra. We develop several functors between implication algebras and cubic algebras. These allow us to generalize the notion of inner automorphism. We then show that this group is always isomorphic to the group of inner automorphisms of a filter algebra.
One version of the polycirculant conjecture states that every vertex-transitive graph has a semiregular automorphism. We give a proof of the conjecture in the arc-transitive case for graphs of valency 8, which was the smallest open case.
The problem of finding upper bounds for minimal vertex number of graphs with a given automorphism group is addressed in this article for the case of cyclic $2$-groups. We show that for any natural $n\ge 2$ there is an undirected graph having $2^n+6$ vertices and automorphism group cyclic of order $2^n$. This confirms an upper bound claimed by other authors for minimal number of vertices of undirected graphs having automorphism group $\mathbb{Z}/2^n\mathbb{Z}$.
An automorphism of a graph describes its structural symmetry and the concept of fixing number of a graph is used for breaking its symmetries (except the trivial one). In this paper, we evaluate automorphisms of the co-normal product graph $G_1\ast G_2$ of two simple graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ and give sharp bounds on the order of its automorphism group. We study the fixing number of $G_1\ast G_2$ and prove sharp bounds on it. Moreover, we compute the fixing number of the co-normal product of some families of graphs.
Up to switching isomorphism there are six ways to put signs on the edges of the Petersen graph. We prove this by computing switching invariants, especially frustration indices and frustration numbers, switching automorphism groups, chromatic numbers, and numbers of proper 1-colorations, thereby illustrating some of the ideas and methods of signed graph theory. We also calculate automorphism groups and clusterability indices, which are not invariant under switching. In the process we develop new properties of signed graphs, especially of their switching automorphism groups.
A graph is said to be a bi-Cayley graph over a group H if it admits H as a group of automorphisms acting semiregularly on its vertices with two orbits. A non-abelian group is called an inner-abelian group if all of its proper subgroups are abelian. In this paper, we complete the classification of connected cubic edge-transitive bi-Cayley graphs over inner-abelian p-groups for an odd prime p.
A partial automorphism of a finite graph is an isomorphism between its vertex induced subgraphs. The set of all partial automorphisms of a given finite graph forms an inverse monoid under composition (of partial maps). We describe the algebraic structure of such inverse monoids by the means of the standard tools of inverse semigroup theory, namely Green's relations and some properties of the natural partial order, and give a characterization of inverse monoids which arise as inverse monoids of partial graph automorphisms. We extend our results to digraphs and edge-colored digraphs as well.
A finite graph is called a tricirculant if admits a cyclic group of automorphism which has precisely three orbits on the vertex-set of the graph, all of equal size. We classify all finite connected cubic vertex-transitive tricirculants. We show that except for some small exceptions of order less than 54, each of these graphs is either a prism of order 6k with k odd, a Möbius ladder, or it falls into one of two infinite families, each family containing one graph for every order of the form 6k with k odd.
The paper concerns the automorphism groups of Cayley graphs over cyclic groups which have a rational spectrum (rational circulant graphs for short). With the aid of the techniques of Schur rings it is shown that the problem is equivalent to consider the automorphism groups of orthogonal group block structures of cyclic groups. Using this observation, the required groups are expressed in terms of generalized wreath products of symmetric groups.

We show that almost all circulant graphs have automorphism groups as small as possible. Of the circulant graphs that do not have automorphism group as small as possible, we give some families of integers such that it is not true that almost all circulant graphs whose order lies in any one of these families, are normal. That almost all Cayley (di)graphs whose automorphism group is not as small as possible are normal was conjectured by the second author, so these results provide counterexamples to this conjecture. It is then shown that there is a large family of integers for which almost every c…
We consider the {\it infinite Johnson graph} $J_{\infty}$ whose vertex set consists of all subsets $X\subset {\mathbb N}$ satisfying $|X|=|{\mathbb N}\setminus X|=\infty$ and whose edges are pairs of such subsets $X,Y$ satisfying $|X\setminus Y|=|Y\setminus X|=1$. An automorphism of $J_{\infty}$ is said to be {\it regular} if it is induced by a permutation on $\mathbb{N}$ or it is the composition of the automorphism induced by a permutation on $\mathbb{N}$ and the automorphism $X\to {\mathbb N}\setminus X$. The graph $J_{\infty}$ admits non-regular automorphisms. Our first result states that t…
The automorphism group of the composition of graphs $G \circ H$ contains the wreath product $Aut(H) \wr Aut(G)$ of the automorphism groups of the corresponding graphs. The classical problem considered by Sabidussi and Hemminger was under what conditions $G \circ H$ has no other automorphisms. In this paper we deal with the converse. If the automorphism group of a graph (or a colored graph or digraph) is the wreath product $A \wr B$ of permutation groups, then the graph must be the result of the corresponding construction. The question we consider is whether $A$ and $B$ must be the automorphism…
We study the automorphisms of a Cayley graph that preserve its natural edge-colouring. More precisely, we are interested in groups G, such that every such automorphism of every connected Cayley graph on G has a very simple form: the composition of a left-translation and a group automorphism. We find classes of groups that have the property, and we determine the orders of all groups that do not have the property. We also have analogous results for automorphisms that permute the colours, rather than preserving them.
We construct a connected cubic nonnormal Cayley graph on $\mathrm{A}_{2^m-1}$ for each integer $m\geqslant4$ and determine its full automorphism group. This is the first infinite family of connected cubic nonnormal Cayley graphs on nonabelian simple groups.
Tutte's 3-flow conjecture asserts that every 4-edge-connected graph has a nowhere-zero 3-flow. In this note we prove that every regular graph of valency at least four admitting a solvable arc-transitive group of automorphisms admits a nowhere-zero 3-flow.
We investigate the automorphism group of the substructure ordering of finite directed graphs. The second author conjectured that it is isomorphic to the 768-element group $(\mathbb{Z}_2^4 \times S_4)\rtimes_α \mathbb{Z}_2$. Though unable to prove it, we solidify this conjecture by showing that the automorphism group behaves as expected by the conjecture on the first few levels of the poset in question. With the use of computer calculation we analyze the first four levels holding 3160 directed graphs.
We describe computational results about undirected graphs having $14$ vertices and automorphism group isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/8\mathbb{Z}$, graphs $Γ$ which have less than $2|Aut(Γ)|$ vertices. We give one example of such graphs.

We consider the infinite-dimensional hypercube graph. This graph is not connected and has isomorphic connected components. We describe the restrictions of its automorphisms to the connected components and the automorphism group of connected component.
A graphical regular representation (GRR) of a group $G$ is a Cayley graph of $G$ whose full automorphism group is equal to the right regular permutation representation of $G$. Towards a proof of the conjecture that only finitely many finite simple groups have no cubic GRR, this paper shows that $\mathrm{PSU}_3(q)$ has a cubic GRR if and only if $q\geq4$. Moreover, a cubic GRR of $\mathrm{PSU}_3(q)$ is constructed for each of these $q$.
These lecture notes provide an introduction to automorphism groups of graphs. Some special families of graphs are then discussed, especially the families of Cayley graphs generated by transposition sets.
The polycirculant conjecture asserts that every vertex-transitive digraph has a semiregular automorphism, that is, a nontrivial automorphism whose cycles all have the same length. In this paper we investigate the existence of semiregular automorphisms of edge-transitive graphs. In particular, we show that any regular edge-transitive graph of valency three or four has a semiregular automorphism.
For an integer $k\geq 1$, a graph is called a $k$-circulant if its automorphism group contains a cyclic semiregular subgroup with $k$ orbits on the vertices. We show that, if $k$ is even, there exist infinitely many cubic arc-transitive $k$-circulants. We conjecture that, if $k$ is odd, then a cubic arc-transitive $k$-circulant has order at most $6k^2$. Our main result is a proof of this conjecture when $k$ is squarefree and coprime to $6$.
A circulant (di)graph is a (di)graph on n vertices that admits a cyclic automorphism of order n. This paper provides a survey of the work that has been done on finding the automorphism groups of circulant (di)graphs, including the generalisation in which the edges of the (di)graph have been assigned colours that are invariant under the aforementioned cyclic automorphism.
A graph is called cubic and tetravalent if all of its vertices have valency 3 and 4, respectively. It is called vertex-transitive and arc-transitive if its automorphism group acts transitively on its vertex-set and on its arc- set, respectively. In this paper, we combine some new theoretical results with computer calculations to construct all cubic vertex-transitive graphs of order at most 1280. In the process, we also construct all tetravalent arc-transitive graphs of order at most 640.
A new family of strongly regular graphs, called the general symplectic graphs $Sp(2ν, q)$, associated with nonsingular alternate matrices is introduced. Their parameters as strongly regular graphs, their chromatic numbers as well as their groups of graph automorphisms are determined.
The distinguishing index $D'(Γ)$ of a graph $Γ$ is the least number $k$ such that $Γ$ has an edge-coloring with $k$ colors preserved only by the trivial automorphism. In this paper we prove that if the automorphism group of a finite graph $Γ$ is simple, then its distinguishing index $D'(Γ)=2$.
In this article, we give an elementary combinatorial proof of a conjecture about the determination of automorphism group of the power graph of finite cyclic groups, proposed by Doostabadi, Erfanian and Jafarzadeh in 2013.
We describe a technique to determine the automorphism group of a geometrically represented graph, by understanding the structure of the induced action on all geometric representations. Using this, we characterize automorphism groups of interval, permutation and circle graphs. We combine techniques from group theory (products, homomorphisms, actions) with data structures from computer science (PQ-trees, split trees, modular trees) that encode all geometric representations. We prove that interval graphs have the same automorphism groups as trees, and for a given interval graph, we construct a tr…
The operation of switching a graph $Γ$ with respect to a subset $X$ of the vertex set interchanges edges and non-edges between $X$ and its complement, leaving the rest of the graph unchanged. This is an equivalence relation on the set of graphs on a given vertex set, so we can talk about the automorphism group of a switching class of graphs. It might be thought that switching classes with many automorphisms would have the property that all their graphs also have many automorphisms. However the main theorem of this paper shows a different picture: with finitely many exceptions, if a non-trivial…
A graph is called a GRR if its automorphism group acts regularly on its vertex-set. Such a graph is necessarily a Cayley graph. Godsil has shown that there are only two infinite families of finite groups that do not admit GRRs : abelian groups and generalised dicyclic groups. Indeed, any Cayley graph on such a group admits specific additional graph automorphisms that depend only on the group. Recently, Dobson and the last two authors showed that almost all Cayley graphs on abelian groups admit no automorphisms other than these obvious necessary ones. In this paper, we prove the analogous resul…
