We consider actions of Z^k, k \ge 2, by Anosov diffeomorphisms which are uniformly quasiconformal on each coarse Lyapunov distribution. These actions generalize Cartan actions for which coarse Lyapunov distributions are one-dimensional. We show that, under certain non-resonance assumptions on the Lyapunov exponents, a finite cover of such an action is smoothly conjugate to an action by toral automorphisms.
I show that the dynamical determinant, associated to an Anosov diffeomorphism, is the Fredholm determinant of the corresponding Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius transfer operator acting on appropriate Banach spaces. As a consequence it follows, for example, that the zeroes of the dynamical determinant describe the eigenvalues of the transfer operator and the Ruelle resonances and that, for $\Co^\infty$ Anosov diffeomorphisms, the dynamical determinant is an entire function.
Combining microlocal methods and a cohomological theory developped by J. Taylor, we define for $\mathbb{R}^κ$-Anosov actions a notion of joint Ruelle resonance spectrum. We prove that these Ruelle-Taylor resonances fit into a Fredholm theory, are intrinsic and form a discrete subset of $\mathbb{C}^κ$, with $λ=0$ being always a leading resonance. The joint resonant states at $0$ give rise to some new measures of SRB type and the mixing properties of these measures are related to the existence of purely imaginary resonances. The spectral theory developed in this article applies in particular to …
A complete description of resonances for rational toral Anosov diffeomorphisms preserving certain Reinhardt domains is presented. As a consequence it is shown that every homotopy class of two-dimensional Anosov diffeomorphisms contains maps with the sequence of resonances decaying stretched-exponentially. This is achieved by introducing a certain group of rational toral diffeomorphisms and computing the resonances of the respective composition operator considered on suitable anisotropic spaces of hyperfunctions. The class of examples is sufficiently rich to also include non-linear Anosov maps …
We study real analytic perturbations of hyperbolic linear automorphisms on the 2-torus. The Koopman and the transfer operator are nuclear of order 0 when acting on a suitable Hilbert space. We show the generic existence of non-trivial Ruelle resonances for both operators. We prove that some of the perturbations preserve the volume and some of them do not.
In [23], Slipantschuk, Bandtlow and Just gave concrete examples of Anosov diffeomorphisms of the two-torus for which their resonances could be completely described. Their approach was based on composition operators acting on analytic anisotropic Hilbert spaces, and in this note we present a construction of alternative anisotropic Hilbert spaces which helps to simplify parts of their analysis and gives scope for constructing further examples.
Using a semiclassical approach we show that the spectrum of a smooth Anosov vector field V on a compact manifold is discrete (in suitable anisotropic Sobolev spaces) and then we provide an upper bound for the density of eigenvalues of the operator (-i)V, called Ruelle resonances, close to the real axis and for large real parts.
We prove a local trace formula for Anosov flows. It relates Pollicott--Ruelle resonances to the periods of closed orbits. As an application, we show that the counting function for resonances in a sufficiently wide strip cannot have a sublinear growth. In particular, for any Anosov flow there exist strips with infinitely many resonances.
We show how an object from the combinatorially geometric version of the analytical number theory, namely geometric continued fractions, appears in the classical smooth dynamics, namely in the problem on the topological classification of Anosov diffeomorphisms of tori.
We give complete classification of C^2-regular and non-degenerate projectively Anosov flows on three dimensional manifolds. More precisely, we prove that such a flow on a connected manifold must be either an Anosov flow or represented as a finite union of $T^2 \times [0,1]$-models.
We prove global smooth classification results for TNS totally Anosov Z^k actions on general compact manifolds, under each one of the following conditions: joint integrability, resonance-free or Lyapunov pinching condition. Unlike the previous results, we do not require any uniform quasiconformality or pinching condition of action elements on coarse Lyapunov distributions, nor do we have any restriction on the dimension of coarse Lyapunov distributions. The main novelty is in proving a new standard form of the derivative cocycle for any TNS totally Anosov Z^k action on general manifold. A main …
We give a simple procedure to construct explicit examples of nilmanifolds admitting an Anosov diffeomorphism, and show that a reasonable classification up to homeomorphism (or even up to commensurability) of such nilmanifolds would not be possible.
In this paper we give a classification of special endomorphisms of nil-manifolds: Let $f:N/Γ\rightarrow N/Γ$ be a covering map of a nil-manifold and denote by $A:N/Γ\rightarrow N/Γ$ the nil-endomorphism which is homotopic to $f$. If $f$ is a special $TA$-map, then $A$ is a hyperbolic nil-endomorphism and $f$ is topologically conjugate to $A$.
Weprovethattheasymptoticsofergodicintegralsalonganinvariant foliation of a toral Anosov diffeomorphism, or of a pseudo-Anosov diffeomorphism on a compact orientable surface of higher genus, are determined (up to a logarithmic error) by the action of the diffeomorphism on the cohomology of the surface. As a consequence of our argument and of the results of Giulietti and Liverani [GL] on horospherical averages, toral Anosov diffeomorphisms have no Ruelle resonances in the open interval $(1,e^{h_{top}} )$.
The classification of all real and rational Anosov Lie algebras up to dimension 8 is given by Lauret and Will. In this paper we study 9-dimensional Anosov Lie algebras by using the properties of very special algebraic numbers and Lie algebra classification tools. We prove that there exists a unique (up to a Lie algebra isomorphism) complex 3-step Anosov Lie algebra of dimension 9. In the 2-step case, we prove that a 2-step real 9-dimensional Anosov Lie algebra with no abelian factor must have a 3-dimensional derived algebra and we characterize these Lie algebras in terms of their Pfaffian form…
The Ruelle resonances of a dynamical system are spectral data describing the precise asymptotics of correlations. We classify them completely for a class of chaotic two-dimensional maps, the linear pseudo-Anosov maps, in terms of the action of the map on cohomology. As applications, we obtain a full description of the distributions which are invariant under the linear flow in the stable direction of such a linear pseudo-Anosov map, and we solve the cohomological equation for this flow.
We show, using semiclassical measures and unstable derivatives, that a smooth vector field $X$ generating a contact Anosov flow on a $3$-dimensional manifold $\mathcal{M}$ has only finitely many Ruelle resonances in the vertical strips $\{ s\in \mathbb{C}\ |\ {\rm Re}(s)\in [-ν_{\min}+ε,-\frac{1}{2}ν_{\max}-ε]\cup [-\frac{1}{2}ν_{\min}+ε,0]\}$ for all $ε>0$, where $0<ν_{\min}\leq ν_{\max}$ are the minimal and maximal expansion rates of the flow (the first strip only makes sense if $ν_{\min}>ν_{\max}/2$). We also show polynomial bounds in $s$ for the resolvent $(-X-s)^{-1}$ as $|{\rm Im}(s)|\to…
We classify quasiconformal Anosov flows whose strong stable and unstable distributions are at least two dimensional and the sum of these two distributions is smooth. We deduce from this classification result the complete classification of volume-preserving quasiconformal diffeomorphisms whose stable and unstable distributions are at least two dimensional. Our central idea is to take a good time change so that perodic orbits are equi-distributed with respect to a lebesgue measure.
In this article we analyze totally periodic pseudo-Anosov flows in graph three manifolds. This means that in each Seifert fibered piece of the torus decomposition, the free homotopy class of regular fibers has a finite power which is also a finite power of the free homotopy class of a closed orbit of the flow. We show that each such flow is topologically equivalent to one of the model pseudo-Anosov flows which we constructed in a previous article. A model pseudo-Anosov flow is obtained by glueing standard neighborhoods of Birkhoff annuli and perhaps doing Dehn surgery on certain orbits. We als…
In this article, we give a quasi-final classification of quasiconformal Anosov flows. We deduce a very interesting differentable rigidity result for the orbit foliations of hyperbolic manifold of dimension at least three.
We give the complete classification of regular projectively Anosov flows on closed three-dimensional manifolds. More precisely, we show that such a flow must be either an Anosov flow or decomposed into a finite union of $T^2 \times I$-models. We also apply our method to rigidity problems of some group actions.
Consider a three dimensional partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism. It is proven that under some rigid hypothesis on the tangent bundle dynamics, the map is (modulo finite covers and iterates) either an Anosov diffeomorphism, a skew-product or the time-one map of an Anosov flow, thus recovering a well known classification conjecture of the second author to this restricted setting.
It is conjectured that every manifold admitting an Anosov diffeomorphism is, up to homeomorphism, finitely covered by a nilmanifold. Motivated by this conjecture, an important problem is to determine which nilmanifolds admit an Anosov diffeomorphism. The main theorem of this article gives a general method for constructing Anosov diffeomorphisms on nilmanifolds. As a consequence, we give counterexamples to a corollary of the classification of low-dimensional nilmanifolds with Anosov diffeomorphisms and a correction to this statement is proven. This method also answers some open questions about …
We give a sharp polynomial bound on the number of Pollicott-Ruelle resonances. These resonances, which are complex numbers in the lower half-plane, appear in expansions of correlations for Anosov contact flows. The bounds follow the tradition of upper bounds on the number of scattering resonances and improve a recent bound of Faure-Sjöstrand. The complex scaling method used in scattering theory is replaced by an approach using exponentially weighted spaces introduced by Helffer-Sjöstrand in scattering theory and by Faure-Sjöstrand in the theory of Anosov flows.
We show that genuinely higher rank expanding actions of abelian semi-groups on compact manifolds are $C^{\infty}$-conjugate to affine actions on infra-nilmanifolds. This is based on the classification of expanding diffeomorphisms up to \holder conjugacy by Gromov and Shub, and is similar to recent work on smooth classification of higher rank Anosov actions on tori and nilmanifolds. To prove regularity of the conjugacy in the higher rank setting, we establish exponential mixing of solenoid actions induced from semi-group actions by nilmanifold endomorphisms, a result of independent interest. We…
The purpose of this paper is to classify Anosov flows on the 3-manifolds obtained by Dehn surgeries on the figure-eight knot. This set of 3-manifolds is denoted by M(r) (r is a ratioanl number), which contains the first class of hyperbolic 3-manifolds admitting Anosov flows in history, discovered by Goodman. Combining with the classification of Anosov flows on the sol-manifold M(0) due to Plante, we have: 1. if r is an integer, up to topological equivalence, M(r) exactly carries a unique Anosov flow, which is constructed by Goodman by doing a Dehn-Fried-Goodman surgery on a suspension Anosov f…
In this paper, we investigate the ergodic and rigidity properties of weakly hyperbolic group actions. Motivated by classical theorems describing Anosov diffeomorphisms, we obtain two main results: First, all C^2 volume preserving weakly hyperbolic actions on closed manifolds are ergodic. This result generalizes Anosov's classical theorem on ergodicity of Anosov diffeomorphisms to the wider class of weakly hyperbolic group actions. To state the second main result, suppose that A denotes a weakly hyperbolic action of a higher rank lattice (such as SL(n,Z) for n>2) by C^2 volume preserving diffeo…
We prove a classification theorem for transitive Anosov and pseudo-Anosov flows on closed 3-manifolds, up to orbit equivalence. In many cases, flows on a 3-manifold $M$ are completely determined by the set of free homotopy classes of their (unoriented) periodic orbits. The exceptional cases are flows with a special structure in their orbit space called a ``tree of scalloped regions"; in these cases the set of free homotopy classes of unoriented periodic orbits together with the additional data of a choice of sign for each $π_1(M)$-orbit of tree gives a complete invariant of orbit equivalence c…
This paper surveys recent results on classifying partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. This includes the construction of branching foliations and leaf conjugacies on three-dimensional manifolds with solvable fundamental group. Classification results in higher-dimensional settings are also discussed. The paper concludes with an overview of the construction of new partially hyperbolic examples derived from Anosov flows.
A classification of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms on 3-dimensional manifolds with (virtually) solvable fundamental group is obtained. If such a diffeomorphism does not admit a periodic attracting or repelling two-dimensional torus, it is dynamically coherent and leaf conjugate to a known algebraic example. This classification includes manifolds which support Anosov flows, and it confirms conjectures by Rodriguez Hertz--Rodriguez Hertz--Ures and Pujals in the specific case of solvable fundamental group.
The study of wave propagation outside bounded obstacles uncovers the existence of resonances for the Laplace operator, which are complex-valued generalized eigenvalues, relevant to estimate the long time asymptotics of the wave. In order to understand distribution of these resonances at high frequency, we employ semiclassical tools, which leads to considering the classical scattering problem, and in particular the set of trapped trajectories. We focus on "chaotic" situations, where this set is a hyperbolic repeller, generally with a fractal geometry. In this context, we derive fractal Weyl upp…
In the paper we give an introduction to Anosov diffeomorphisms, ways to represent their chaotic properties and some historical remarks on this subject. A complete classification of hyperbolic linear automorphisms of 2-torus is presented. We introduce a notion of pre-Markov partition for such automorphisms and give their classification and an algorithm for their construction.
We show that the ergodic averages for the horocycle flow on the two-torus associated by Giulietti and Liverani to an Anosov diffeomorphism either grow linearly or are bounded, in other words there are no deviations. For this, we use topological invariance of the Artin-Mazur zeta function to exclude resonances outside of the open unit disc. Transfer operators acting on suitable spaces of anisotropic distributions and their Ruelle determinants are the key tools in the proof. As a bonus, we show that for any smooth Anosov diffeomorphism F on the two-torus, the correlations for the measure of maxi…
The classification, by topological conjugacy, of invertible holomorphic germs $f:(\mathbb{C}^n,0)\to (\mathbb{C}^n,0)$, with $λ_1,...,λ_n$ eigenvalues of $df_0$, and $|λ_i|\neq 1$ for $i=2,...,n$ while $λ_1$ is a root of the unity, is given, in the suitable hypothesis of ``quasi-absence'' of resonances.
For groups of diffeomorphisms of $\T^2$ containing an Anosov diffeomorphism, we give a complete classification for polycyclic Abelian-by-Cyclic group actions on $\T^2$ up to both topological conjugacy and smooth conjugacy under mild assumptions. Along the way, we also prove a Tits alternative type theorem for some groups of diffeomorphisms of $\T^2$.
