We describe infinite clusters which arise in nearest-neighbour percolation for so-called cocycle measures on the square lattice. These measures arise naturally in the study of random transformations. We show that infinite clusters have a very specific form and direction. In concrete situations, this leads to a quick decision whether or not a certain cocycle measure percolates. We illustrate this with two examples which are interesting in their own right.
We discuss variational formulas for the limits of certain models of motion in a random medium: namely, the limiting time constant for last-passage percolation and the limiting free energy for directed polymers. The results are valid for models in arbitrary dimension, steps of the admissible paths can be general, the environment process is ergodic under shifts, and the potential accumulated along a path can depend on the environment and the next step of the path. The variational formulas come in two types: one minimizes over gradient-like cocycles, and another one maximizes over invariant measu…
We study the directed last-passage percolation model on the planar integer lattice with nearest-neighbor steps and general i.i.d. weights on the vertices, outside the class of exactly solvable models. Stationary cocycles are constructed for this percolation model from queueing fixed points. These cocycles serve as boundary conditions for stationary last-passage percolation, define solutions to variational formulas that characterize limit shapes, and yield new results for Busemann functions, geodesics and the competition interface.

In this note we study the geometry of the largest component C_1 of critical percolation on a finite graph G which satisfies the finite triangle condition, defined by Borgs et al. There it is shown that this component is of size n^{2/3}, and here we show that its diameter is n^{1/3} and that the simple random walk takes n steps to mix on it. Our results apply to critical percolation on several high-dimensional finite graphs such as the finite torus Z_n^d (with d large and n tending to infinity) and the Hamming cube {0,1}^n.
In this survey article we consider the directed last-passage percolation model on the planar square lattice with nearest-neighbor steps and general i.i.d. weights on the vertices, outside of the class of exactly solvable models. We show how stationary cocycles are constructed from queueing fixed points and how these cocycles characterize the limit shape, yield existence of Busemann functions in directions where the shape has some regularity, describe the direction of the competition interface, and answer questions on existence, uniqueness, and coalescence of directional semi-infinite geodesics…
These lecture notes are written as reference material for the Advanced Course "Hydrodynamical Methods in Last Passage Percolation Models", given at the 28th Coloquio Brasileiro de Matematica at IMPA, Rio de Janeiro, July 2011.
These notes fill in results about oriented percolation that are required for the paper [3] ("Forward clusters for degenerate random environments"). Since these are essentially modifications of results found in other sources (but adapted to the model we particularly need), there is no intention to publish these.
In this note, we study the directed first passage percolation introduced in [F. Comets, R. Fukushima, S. Nakajima and N. Yoshida: Journal of Statistical Physics, 161-(3), 577-597 (2015)]. It is proved that the shortest path from the origin to the $n$-th hyperplane makes a jump larger than a small power of $\log n$. Some numerical results are also provided, which indicates that the maximal jump size is much larger in a certain parameter region.
In this note we analyze an anisotropic, two-dimensional bootstrap percolation model introduced by Gravner and Griffeath. We present upper and lower bounds on the finite-size effects. We discuss the similarities with the semi-oriented model introduced by Duarte.
In this short note we consider mixed short-long range independent bond percolation models on $\Z^{k+d}$. Let $p_{uv}$ be the probability that the edge $(u,v)$ will be open. Allowing a $x,y$-dependent length scale and using a multi-scale analysis due to Aizenman and Newman, we show that the long distance behavior of the connectivity $τ_{xy}$ is governed by the probability $p_{xy}$. The result holds up to the critical point.
Consider Bernoulli bond percolation on a locally finite, connected graph $G$ and let $p_{\mathrm{cut}}$ be the threshold corresponding to a "first-moment method" lower bound. Kahn (\textit{Electron.\ Comm.\ Probab.\ Volume 8, 184-187.} (2003)) constructed a counter-example to Lyons' conjecture of $p_{\mathrm{cut}}=p_c$ and proposed a modification. Here we give a positive answer to Kahn's modified question. The key observation is that in Kahn's modification, the new expectation quantity also appears in the differential inequality of one-arm events. This links the question to a lemma of Duminil-…
We consider oriented long-range percolation on a graph with vertex set $\mathbb{Z}^d \times \mathbb{Z}_+$ and directed edges of the form $\langle (x,t), (x+y,t+1)\rangle$, for $x,y$ in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and $t \in \mathbb{Z}_+$. Any edge of this form is open with probability $p_y$, independently for all edges. Under the assumption that the values $p_y$ do not vanish at infinity, we show that there is percolation even if all edges of length more than $k$ are deleted, for $k$ large enough. We also state the analogous result for a long-range contact process on $\mathbb{Z}^d$.
We study conditioned random-cluster measures with edge-parameter p and cluster-weighting factor q satisfying q \ge 1. The conditioning corresponds to mixed boundary conditions for a spin model. Interfaces may be defined in the sense of Dobrushin, and these are proved to be `rigid' in the thermodynamic limit, in three dimensions and for sufficiently large values of p. This implies the existence of non-translation-invariant (conditioned) random-cluster measures in three dimensions. The results are valid in the special case q=1, thus indicating a property of three-dimensional percolation not prev…
We provide a new proof of the sharpness of the phase transition for nearest-neighbour Bernoulli percolation. More precisely, we show that - for $p<p_c$, the probability that the origin is connected by an open path to distance $n$ decays exponentially fast in $n$. - for $p>p_c$, the probability that the origin belongs to an infinite cluster satisfies the mean-field lower bound $θ(p)\ge\tfrac{p-p_c}{p(1-p_c)}$. This note presents the argument of \cite{DumTas15}, which is valid for long-range Bernoulli percolation (and for the Ising model) on arbitrary transitive graphs in the simpler framework o…
In this note we discuss vacant set level set percolation on a transient weighted graph. It interpolates between the percolation of the vacant set of random interlacements and the level set percolation of the Gaussian free field. We employ coupling and derive a stochastic domination from which we deduce in a rather general set-up a certain monotonicity property of the percolation function. In the case of regular trees this stochastic domination leads to a strict inequality between some eigenvalues related to Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semi-groups for which we have no direct analytical proof. It underpi…
Let $\mathbb{G}=\left(\mathbb{V},\mathbb{E}\right)$ be the graph obtained by taking the cartesian product of an infinite and connected graph $G=(V,E)$ and the set of integers $\mathbb{Z}$. We choose a collection $\mathcal{C}$ of finite connected subgraphs of $G$ and consider a model of Bernoulli bond percolation on $\mathbb{G}$ which assigns probability $q$ of being open to each edge whose projection onto $G$ lies in some subgraph of $\mathcal{C}$ and probability $p$ to every other edge. We show that the critical percolation threshold $p_{c}\left(q\right)$ is a continuous function in $\left(0,…
The purpose of this note is twofold. First, we survey the study of the percolation phase transition on the Hamming hypercube {0,1}^m obtained in the series of papers [9,10,11,24]. Secondly, we explain how this study can be performed without the use of the so-called "lace-expansion" technique. To that aim, we provide a novel simple proof that the triangle condition holds at the critical probability. We hope that some of these techniques will be useful to obtain non-perturbative proofs in the analogous, yet much more difficult study on high-dimensional tori.
In \emph{$k$-bootstrap percolation}, we fix $p\in (0,1)$, an integer $k$, and a plane graph $G$. Initially, we infect each face of $G$ independently with probability $p$. Infected faces remain infected forever, and if a healthy (uninfected) face has at least $k$ infected neighbors, then it becomes infected. For fixed $G$ and $p$, the \emph{percolation threshold} is the largest $k$ such that eventually all faces become infected, with probability at least $1/2$. For a large class of infinite graphs, we show that this threshold is independent of $p$. We consider bootstrap percolation in tilings o…
In this note we consider site percolation on a two dimensional sandwich of thickness two, the graph Z^2 x {0,1}. We prove that there is no percolation at the critical point. The same arguments are valid for a sandwich of thickness three with periodic boundary conditions. It remains an open problem to extend this result to other sandwiches.
The goal of this note is to announce certain results in orbit equivalence theory, especially concerning the approximation of p.m.p. standard equivalence relations by increasing sequence of sub-relations, with applications to the behavior of the Bernoulli percolation on graphs at the threshold pu. We show that for all p>p_c(\Z^d) percolation parameters, the probability that the cluster of the origin is finite but has at least t vertices at distance one from the infinite cluster is exponentially small in t. We use this to give a short proof of the strongest version of the important fact that the isoperimetric profile of the infinite cluster basically coincides with the profile of the original lattice. This implies, e.g., that simple random walk on the largest cluster of a finite box [-n,n]^d with high probability has L^\infty-mixing time Θ(n^2), and that the heat kernel (return probabili…
In this note, we discuss a generalization of Schramm's locality conjecture to the case of random-cluster models. We give some partial (modest) answers, and present several related open questions. Our main result is to show that the critical inverse temperature of the Potts model on $\mathbb Z^r\times(\mathbb Z/2n\mathbb Z)^{d-r}$ (with $r\ge3$) converges to the critical inverse temperature of the model on $\mathbb Z^d$ as $n$ tends to infinity. Our proof relies on the infrared bound and, contrary to the corresponding statement for Bernoulli percolation, does not involve renormalization argumen…
In this note we investigate the last passage percolation model in the presence of macroscopic inhomogeneity. We analyze how this affects the scaling limit of the passage time, leading to a variational problem that provides an ODE for the deterministic limiting shape of the maximal path. We obtain a sufficient analytical condition for uniqueness of the solution for the variational problem. Consequences for the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process are discussed.
Previously, Sarkar and Sun have shown that for supercritical oriented percolation in dimension $1+1$, the set of rightmost infinite open paths converges to the Brownian web after proper centering and scaling. In this note, we show that a pair of sticky Brownian webs arise naturally if one considers the set of right-most infinite open paths for two coupled percolation configurations with distinct (but close) percolation parameters. This leads to a natural conjecture on the convergence of the dynamical supercritical oriented percolation model to the so-called dynamical Brownian web.
We prove that nearest-neighbor percolation in dimensions $d\geq 11$ displays mean-field behavior by proving that the infrared bound holds, in turn implying the finiteness of the percolation triangle diagram. The finiteness of the triangle implies the existence and mean-field values of various critical exponents, such as $γ=1, β=1, δ=2$. We also prove sharp $x$-space asymptotics for the two-point function and the existence of various arm exponents. Such results had previously been obtained in unpublished work by Hara and Slade for nearest-neighbor percolation in dimension $d\geq 19$, so that we…
In this note we study some properties of infinite percolation clusters on non-amenable graphs. In particular, we study the percolative properties of the complement of infinite percolation clusters. An approach based on mass-transport is adapted to show that for a large class of non-amenable graphs, the graph obtained by removing each site contained in an infinite percolation cluster has critical percolation threshold which can be arbitrarily close to the critical threshold for the original graph, almost surely, as p approaches p_c. Closely related is the self-destructive percolation process, i…
We make a few elementary observations that relate directly the items mentioned in the title. In particular, we note that when one superimposes the random current model related to the Ising model with an independent Bernoulli percolation model with well-chosen weights, one obtains exactly the FK-percolation (or random cluster model) associated with the Ising model. We also point out that this relation can be interpreted via loop-soups, combining the description of the sign of a Gaussian Free Field on a discrete graph knowing its square (and the relation of this question with the FK-Ising model)…
This paper explores the link between the ergodicity of the clus-ter equivalence relation restricted to its infinite locus and the indis-tinguishability of infinite clusters. It is an important element of the dictionary connecting orbit equivalence and percolation theory. This note starts with a short exposition of some standard material of these theories. Then, the classic correspondence between ergodicity and in-distinguishability is presented. Finally, we introduce a notion of strong indistinguishability that corresponds to strong ergodicity, and obtain that this strong indistinguishability …
We consider independent anisotropic bond percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d\times \mathbb{Z}^s$ where edges parallel to $\mathbb{Z}^d$ are open with probability $p<p_c(\mathbb{Z}^d)$ and edges parallel to $\mathbb{Z}^s$ are open with probability $q$, independently of all others. We prove that percolation occurs for $q\geq 8d^2(p_c(\mathbb{Z}^d)-p)$. This fact implies that the so-called Dimensional Crossover critical exponent, if it exists, is greater than 1. In particular, using known results, we conclude the proof that, for $d\geq 11$, the crossover critical exponent exists and equals 1.
In this note we provide an alternative proof of the fact that subcritical bootstrap percolation models have a positive critical probability in any dimension. The proof relies on a recent extension of the classical framework of Toom. This approach is not only simpler than the original multi-scale renormalisation proof of the result in two and more dimensions, but also gives significantly better bounds. As a byproduct, we improve the best known bounds for the stability threshold of Toom's North-East-Center majority rule cellular automaton.
This note is motivated by results in arXiv:math/0608132 and arXiv:0806.2425 about global relations between the invasion percolation cluster (IPC) and the incipient infinite cluster (IIC) on regular trees and on two dimensional lattices, respectively. Namely, that the laws of the two objects are mutually singular, and, in the case of regular trees, that the IIC stochastically dominates the IPC. We prove that on two dimensional lattices, the IIC does not stochastically dominate the IPC. This is the first example showing that the relation between the IIC and IPC is significantly different on tree…
In this note, we study the model of directed last passage percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^2$, with i.i.d. exponential weight. We consider the maximum paths from vertices $\left(0,\lfloor k^{2/3} \rfloor\right)$ and $(\lfloor k^{2/3} \rfloor,0)$ to $(n,n)$, respectively. For the coalescing point of these paths, we show that the probability for it being $>kR$ far away from the origin is in the order of $R^{-2/3}$. This is motivated by a recent work of Basu, Sarkar, and Sly, where the same estimate was obtained for semi-infinite geodesics, and the optimal exponent for the finite case was left open. Ou…
We study the directed last-passage percolation model on the planar integer lattice with nearest-neighbor steps and general i.i.d. weights on the vertices, outside the class of exactly solvable models. In a previous paper we constructed stationary cocycles and Busemann functions for this model. Using these objects, we prove new results on the competition interface, on existence, uniqueness, and coalescence of directional semi-infinite geodesics, and on nonexistence of doubly infinite geodesics.
In this note we show that percolation on non-amenable Cayley graphs of high girth has a phase of non-uniqueness, i.e., p_c < p_u. Furthermore, we show that percolation and self-avoiding walk on such graphs have mean-field critical exponents. In particular, the self-avoiding walk has positive speed.
Fix a graph $G$ in which every edge is colored in some of $k\ge 2$ colors. Two vertices $u$ and $v$ are CA-connected if $u$ and $v$ may be connected using any subset of $k - 1$ colors. CA-connectivity is an equivalence relation dividing the vertex set into classes called CA-components. In two recent papers, Ráth, Varga, Fekete, and Molontay, and Lichev and Schapira studied the size of the largest CA-component in a randomly colored random graph. The second of these works distinguished and studied three regimes (supercritical, intermediate, and subcritical) in which the largest CA-component has …
In a recent work, we proved that under diffusive scaling, the collection of rightmost infinite open paths in a supercritical oriented percolation configuration on the space-time lattice Z^2 converges in distribution to the Brownian web. In that proof, the FKG inequality played an important role in establishing a density bound, which is a part of the convergence criterion for the Brownian web formulated by Fontes et al (2004). In this note, we illustrate how an alternative convergence criterion formulated by Newman et al (2005) can be verified in this case, which involves a dual density bound t…
Consider the long-range percolation model on the integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$ in which all nearest-neighbour edges are present and otherwise $x$ and $y$ are connected with probability $q_{x,y}:=1-\exp(-|x-y|^{-s})$, independently of the state of other edges. Throughout the regime where the model yields a locally-finite graph, (i.e.\ for $s>d$,) we determine the spectral dimension of the associated simple random walk, apart from at the exceptional value $d=1$, $s=2$, where the spectral dimension is discontinuous. Towards this end, we present various on-diagonal heat kernel bounds, a number of…
Consider any fixed graph whose edges have been randomly and independently oriented, and write $\{S \leadsto i\}$ to indicate that there is an oriented path going from a vertex $s \in S$ to vertex $i$. Narayanan (2016) proved that for any set $S$ and any two vertices $i$ and $j$, $\{S \leadsto i\}$ and $\{S \leadsto j\}$ are positively correlated. His proof relies on the Ahlswede-Daykin inequality, a rather advanced tool of probabilistic combinatorics. In this short note, I give an elementary proof of the following, stronger result: writing $V$ for the vertex set of the graph, for any source se…
A bootstrap percolation process on a graph G is an "infection" process which evolves in rounds. Initially, there is a subset of infected nodes and in each subsequent round every uninfected node which has at least r infected neighbours becomes infected and remains so forever. The parameter r > 1 is fixed. We consider this process in the case where the underlying graph is an inhomogeneous random graph whose kernel is of rank 1. Assuming that initially every vertex is infected independently with probability p > 0, we provide a law of large numbers for the number of vertices that will have been in…
In this note we prove a correlation inequality for local variables of a Gibbs field based on the connectivity by active hyperbonds in a random cluster representation of the non overlap configuration distribution of two independent copies of the field. As a consequence, we show that absence of Machta-Newman-Stein blue bonds percolation implies uniqueness of Gibbs distribution in EA Spin Glasses. In dimension two this could constitute a step towards a proof that the critical temperature is zero.
