In this article, a theory of generalized oscillatory integrals (OIs) is developed whose phase functions as well as amplitudes may be generalized functions of Colombeau type. Based on this, generalized Fourier integral operators (FIOs) acting on Colombeau algebras are defined. This is motivated by the need of a general framework for partial differential operators with non-smooth coefficients and distribution data. The mapping properties of these FIOs are studied, as is microlocal Colombeau regularity for OIs and the influence of the FIO action on generalized wave front sets.
We derive damping estimates and asymptotics of $L^p$ operator norms for oscillatory integral operators with finite type singularities. The methods are based on incorporating finite type conditions into $L^2$ almost orthogonality technique of Cotlar-Stein.
We establish sharp global regularity of a class of multilinear oscillatory integral operators that are associated to nonlinear dispersive equations with both Banach and quasi-Banach target spaces. As a consequence we also prove the (local in time) continuous dependence on the initial data for solutions of a large class of coupled systems of dispersive partial differential equations.
Consider the solution of the time-dependent Schr{ö}dinger equation with initial data $f$. It is shown in \cite{artikel} that there exists $f$ in the Sobolev space $H^s(\RR), s=n/2$ such that tangential convergence can not be widened to convergence regions. In this paper we show that the corresponding result holds when $-Δ_x$ is replaced by an operator $ϕ(D)$, with special conditions on $ϕ$.
We establish certain square function estimates for a class of oscillatory integral operators with homogeneous phase functions. These results are employed to deduce a refinement of a previous result of Mockenhaupt Seeger and Sogge \cite{MSS-jams} on the local smoothing property for Fourier integral operators, which arise naturally in the study of wave equations on compact Riemannian manifolds. The proof is an adaptation of the bilinear approach of Tao and Vargas \cite{Tao-Vargas-II}, %as well as Garrigós and Seeger \cite{GaSe09}, and based on bilinear oscillatory integral estimates of Lee \cite…
Let $\,T^{j,k}_{N}:L^{p}(B)\, \rightarrow\,L^{q}([0,1])\,$ be the oscillatory integral operators defined by $\;\displaystyle T^{j,k}_{N}f(s):=\int_{B} \,f(x)\,e^{\imath N{|x|}^{j}s^{k}}\,dx, \quad (j,k)\in\{1,2\}^{2},\,$ where $\,B\,$ is the unit ball in ${\mathbb{R}}^{n}\,$ and $\,N\,>>1.$ We compare the asymptotic behaviour as $\,N\rightarrow +\infty\,$ of the operator norms $\,\parallel T^{j,k}_{N} \parallel_ {L^{p}(B)\rightarrow L^{q}([0,1])}\,$ for all $\,p,\,q\in [1,+\infty].\,$ We prove that, except for the dimension $n=1,\,$ this asymptotic behaviour depends on the linearity or quadrat…
In this paper, we first generalize the work of Bourgain and state a curvature condition for Hörmander-type oscillatory integral operators, which we call Bourgain's condition. This condition is notably satisfied by the phase functions for the Fourier restriction problem and the Bochner-Riesz problem. We conjecture that for Hörmander-type oscillatory integral operators satisfying Bourgain's condition, they satisfy the same $L^p$ bounds as in the Fourier Restriction Conjecture. To support our conjecture, we show that whenever Bourgain's condition fails, then the $L^{\infty} \to L^q$ boundedness a…
We study the continuity on the modulation spaces $M^{p,q}$ of Fourier multipliers with symbols of the type $e^{iμ(ξ)}$, for some real-valued function $μ(ξ)$. A number of results are known, assuming that the derivatives of order $\geq 2$ of the phase $μ(ξ)$ are bounded or, more generally, that its second derivatives belong to the Sjöstrand class $M^{\infty,1}$. Here we extend those results, by assuming that the second derivatives lie in the bigger Wiener amalgam space $W(\mathcal{F} L^1,L^\infty)$; in particular they could have stronger oscillations at infinity such as $\cos |ξ|^2$. Actually ou…
We consider bilinear oscillatory integrals, i.e. pseudo-product operators whose symbol involves an oscillating factor. Lebesgue space inequalities are established, which give decay as the oscillation becomes stronger ; this extends the well-known linear theory of oscillatory integral in some directions. The proof relies on a combination of time-frequency analysis of Coifman-Meyer type with stationary and non-stationary phase estimates. As a consequence of this analysis, we obtain Lebesgue estimates for new bilinear multipliers defined by non-smooth symbols.
We discuss the asymptotic behaviour for the best constant in L^p-L^q estimates for trigonometric polinomials and for an integral operator which is related to the solution of inhomogeneous Schrodinger equations. This gives us an opportunity to review some basic facts about oscillatory integrals and the method of stationary phase, and also to make some remarks in connection with Strichartz estimates.
In this paper, we furnish van der Corput types estimates for oscillatory integrals with respect to a large parameter, where the phase is allowed to have a stationary point of real order and the amplitude to have an integrable singularity. The resulting estimates show explicitly the influence of these two particular points on the decay. These results are then applied to the solutions of a family of dispersive equations whose generators are Fourier multipliers. We explore the effect of a limitation to compact frequency bands and of singular frequencies of the initial condition on the decay. Unif…
In this paper, we consider $L^p$- estimate for a class of oscillatory integral operators satisfying the Carleson-Sjölin conditions with further convex and straight assumptions. As applications, the multiplier problem related to a general class of hypersurfaces with nonvanishing Gaussian curvature, local smoothing estimates for the fractional Schrödinger equation and the sharp resolvent estimates outside of the uniform boundedness range are discussed.
In this paper, we consider a family of second-order elliptic systems subject to a periodically oscillating Robin boundary condition. We establish the qualitative homogenization theorem on any Lipschitz domains satisfying a non-resonance condition. We also use the quantitative estimates of oscillatory integrals to obtain the dimension-dependent convergence rates in $L^2$, assuming that the domain is smooth and strictly convex.
We consider the question of when it is possible to force a degenerate scalar oscillatory integral to decay as fast as a nondegenerate one by restricting the support to the region where the Hessian determinant of the phase is bounded below. We show in two dimensions that the desired outcome is not always possible, but does occur for a broad class of phases which may be described in terms of the Newton polygon. The estimates obtained are uniform with respect to linear perturbation of the phase and uniform in the cutoff value of the Hessian determinant. In the course of the proof, we investigate …
The theory of Fourier integral operators is surveyed, with an emphasis on local smoothing estimates and their applications. After reviewing the classical background, we describe some recent work of the authors which established sharp local smoothing estimates for a natural class of Fourier integral operators. We also show how local smoothing estimates imply oscillatory integral estimates and obtain a maximal variant of an oscillatory integral estimate of Stein. Together with an oscillatory integral counterexample of Bourgain, this shows that our local smoothing estimates are sharp in odd spati…
We generalize the $L^p$ spectral cluster bounds of Sogge for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on compact Riemannian manifolds to systems of orthonormal functions. The optimality of these new bounds is also discussed. These spectral cluster bounds follow from Schatten-type bounds on oscillatory integral operators.
We study oscillatory integrals of the type ${\mathcal F}^{-1}(e^{ita(\cdot)}ψ(\cdot))$ where $a$ is a general function satisfying some elliptic type and non-degenerate conditions at both the origin and infinity, and $ψ$ belongs to some symbol class. Point-wise estimates in space-time are gained with partial sharpness. As applications, global smoothing effects of $L^p-L^q$ as well as Strichartz type for dispersive equations are studied. An application to fractional Schrödinger equations is also given.
A generalized notion of oscillatory integrals that allows for inhomogeneous phase functions of arbitrary positive order is introduced. The wave front set of the resulting distributions is characterized in a way that generalizes the well-known result for phase functions that are homogeneous of order one.
We prove a bilinear $L^2(\R^d) \times L^2(\R^d) \to L^2(\R^{d+1})$ estimate for a pair of oscillatory integral operators with different asymptotic parameters and phase functions satisfying a transversality condition. This is then used to prove a bilinear refinement to Strichartz estimates on closed manifolds, similar to that on $\R^d$, but at a relevant semi-classical scale. These estimates will be employed elsewhere to prove global well-posedness below $H^1$ for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on closed surfaces.
This paper investigates higher order wave-type equations of the form $\partial_{tt}u+P(D_{x})u=0$, where the symbol $P(ξ)$ is a real, non-degenerate elliptic polynomial of the order $m\ge4$ on ${\bf R}^n$. Using methods from harmonic analysis, we first establish global pointwise time-space estimates for a class of oscillatory integrals that appear as the fundamental solutions to the Cauchy problem of such wave equations. These estimates are then used to establish (pointwise-in-time) $L^p-L^q$ estimates on the wave solution in terms of the initial conditions.
We prove sparse bounds for maximal oscillatory rough singular integral operator $$T^{P}_{Ω,*}f(x):=\sup_{ε>0} \left|\int_{|x-y|>ε}e^{ιP(x,y)}\frac{Ω\big((x-y)/|x-y|\big)}{|x-y|^{n}}f(y)dy\right|,$$ where $P(x,y)$ is a real-valued polynomial on $\mathbb{R}^{n}\times \mathbb{R}^{n}$ and $Ω\in L^{\infty}(\mathbb{S}^{n-1})$ is a homogeneous function of degree zero with $\int_{\mathbb{S}^{n-1}}Ω(θ)~dθ=0$. This allows us to conclude weighted $L^p-$estimates for the operator $T^{P}_{Ω,*}$. Moreover, the norm $\|T^P_{Ω,*}\|_{L^p\rightarrow L^p}$ depends only on the total degree of the polynomial $P(x,…
We study certain families of oscillatory integrals $I_φ(a)$, parametrised by phase functions $φ$ and amplitude functions $a$ globally defined on $\mathbb{R}^d$, which give rise to tempered distributions, avoiding the standard homogeneity requirement on the phase function. The singularities of $I_φ(a)$ are described both from the point of view of the lack of smoothness as well as with respect to the decay at infinity. In particular, the latter will depend on a version of the set of stationary points of $φ$, including elements lying at the boundary of the radial compactification of $\mathbb{R}^d…
We prove variation-norm estimates for certain oscillatory integrals related to Carleson's theorem. Bounds for the corresponding maximal operators were first proven by Stein and Wainger. Our estimates are sharp in the range of exponents, up to endpoints. Such variation-norm estimates have applications to discrete analogues and ergodic theory. The proof relies on square function estimates for Schrödinger-like equations due to Lee, Rogers and Seeger. In dimension one, our proof additionally relies on a local smoothing estimate. Though the known endpoint local smoothing estimate by Rogers and Seeg…
We establish new Strichartz estimates for orthonormal families of initial data in the case of the wave, Klein-Gordon and fractional Schrödinger equations. Our estimates extend those of Frank-Sabin in the case of the wave and Klein-Gordon equations, and generalize work of Frank-Lewin-Lieb-Seiringer and Frank-Sabin for the Schrödinger equation. Due to a certain technical barrier, except for the classical Schrödinger equation, the Strichartz estimates for orthonormal families of initial data have not previously been established up to the sharp summability exponents in the full range of admissible…
