For $n\geq 3$, let $Ω_n$ be the set of line segments between the vertices of a convex $n$-gon. For $j\geq 2$, a $j$-crossing is a set of $j$ line segments pairwise intersecting in the relative interior of the $n$-gon. We identify line-segments in $Ω_{2n}$ which can be transformed into each other by a $180^\circ$-rotation of the $2n$-gon. Let $\F_n$ be the set $Ω_{2n}$ after identification, then the complex $\D_{n,k}$ of type-B generalized triangulations is the simplicial complex of subsets of $\F_n$ not containing any $(k+1)$-crossing in the above sense. We demonstrate that $\D_{n,k}$ is a pure, $k(n-k)-1+kn$ dimensional complex that decomposes into a $kn-1$-simplex and a $k(n-k)-1$ dimensional homology sphere.
We give a term-order on the monomials in the variables $X_{ij}, 1\leq i,j\leq n$, such that the corresponding initial ideal of the determinantal ideal generated by the $(k+1)$ times $(k+1)$ minors of the generic $n \times n$ matrix contains the Stanley-Reisner ideal of $\D_{n,k}$. We show that the minors form a Gröbner-Basis whenever $k\in\{1,n-2,n-1\}$. We conjecture this result to be true for all values of $k<n$.
We consider ideals generated by general sets of $m$-minors of an $m\times n$-matrix of indeterminates. The generators are identified with the facets of an $(m-1)$-dimensional pure simplicial complex. The ideal generated by the minors corresponding to the facets of such a complex is called a determinantal facet ideal. Given a pure simplicial complex $Δ$, we discuss the question when the generating minors of its determinantal facet ideal $J_Δ$ form a Gröbner basis and when $J_Δ$ is a prime ideal.
For any finite poset $P$ we have the poset of isotone maps $\text{Hom}(P,\mathbb{N})$, also called $P^{op}$-partitions. To any poset ideal ${\mathcal J}$ in $\text{Hom}(P,\mathbb{N})$, finite or infinite, we associate monomial ideals: the letterplace ideal $L({\mathcal J},P)$ and the Alexander dual co-letterplace ideal $L(P,{\mathcal J})$, and study them. We derive a class of monomial ideals in $k[x_p, p \in P]$ called $P$-stable. When $P$ is a chain we establish a duality on strongly stable ideals. We study the case when ${\mathcal J}$ is a principal poset ideal. When $P$ is a chain we constr…
Motivated by questions in algebra and combinatorics we study two ideals associated to a simple graph G: --> the Lovasz-Saks-Schrijver ideal defining the d-dimensional orthogonal representations of the graph complementary to G and --> the determinantal ideal of the (d+1)-minors of a generic symmetric with 0s in positions prescribed by the graph G. In characteristic 0 these two ideals turns out to be closely related and algebraic properties such as being radical, prime or a complete intersection transfer from the Lovasz-Saks-Schrijver ideal to the determinantal ideal. For Lovasz-Saks-Schrijver i…
Determinantal ideals of graphs generalize, among others, the spectrum and the Smith normal form (SNF) of integer matrices associated to graphs. In this work we investigate the relationship of the spectrum and the SNF with the determinantal ideals. We show that an eigenvalue divides the $k$-th invariant factor of its SNF if the eigenvalue belongs to a variety of the $k$-th univariate integer determinantal ideal of the matrix. This result has as a corollary a theorem of Rushanan. We also study graphs having the same determinantal ideals with at most one indeterminate; the socalled codeterminanta…
In this paper, we use the tools of Gröbner bases and combinatorial secant varieties to study the determinantal ideals $I_t$ of the extended Hankel matrices. Denote by $c$-chain a sequence $a_1,\...,a_k$ with $a_i+c<a_{i+1}$ for all $i=1,\...,k-1$. Using the results of $c$-chain, we solve the membership problem for the symbolic powers $I_t^{(s)}$ and we compute the primary decomposition of the product $I_{t_1}\... I_{t_k}$ of the determinantal ideals. Passing through the initial ideals and algebras we prove that the product $I_{t_1}\... I_{t_k}$ has a linear resolution and the multi-homogeneous…
We connect k-triangulations of a convex n-gon to the theory of Schubert polynomials. We use this connection to prove that the simplicial complex with k-triangulations as facets is a vertex-decomposable triangulated sphere, and we give a new proof of the determinantal formula for the number of k-triangulations.
Let $X$ be an $(m\times n)$-matrix of indeterminates, and let $J$ be the ideal generated by a set $\mathcal{S}$ of maximal minors of $X$. We construct the linear strand of the resolution of $J$. This linear strand is determined by the clique complex of the $m$-clutter corresponding to the set $\mathcal{S}$. As a consequence one obtains explicit formulas for the graded Betti numbers $β_{i,i+m}(J)$ for all $i\geq 0$. We also determine all sets $\mathcal{S}$ for which $J$ has a linear resolution.
Let $X$ be a matrix with entries in a polynomial ring over an algebraically closed field $K$. We prove that, if the entries of $X$ outside some $(t \times t)$-submatrix are algebraically dependent over $K$, the arithmetical rank of the ideal $I_t(X)$ of $t$-minors of $X$ drops at least by one with respect to the generic case; under suitable assumptions, it drops at least by $k$ if $X$ has $k$ zero entries. This upper bound turns out to be sharp if $\mathrm{char}\, K=0$, since it then coincides with the lower bound provided by the local cohomological dimension.
We study d-dimensional generalizations of three mutually related topics in graph theory: Hamiltonian paths, (unit) interval graphs, and binomial edge ideals. We provide partial high-dimensional generalizations of Ore and Posa's sufficient conditions for a graph to be Hamiltonian. We introduce a hierarchy of combinatorial properties for simplicial complexes that generalize unit-interval, interval, and co-comparability graphs. We connect these properties to the already existing notions of determinantal facet ideals and Hamiltonian paths in simplicial complexes. Some important consequences of our…
The first sections contain a survey of the application of the Knuth-Robinson-Schensted corerspondence to the computation of Groebner bases of determinantal ideals. We also set up a conceptual framework for this application in terms of so-called "KRS invariants". Then we show that the initial ideal of a determinantal ideal "defined by shape" is given by its KRS image. We furthermore characterize those among these ideals that even have a Groebner basis of products of minors, and show that they can be characterized in terms of Greene's KRS invariants. Furthermore it is shown that for the ideal ge…
We introduce the concept of s-Hankel hypermatrix, which generalizes both Hankel matrices and generic hypermatrices. We study two determinantal ideals associated to an s-Hankel hypermatrix: the ideal I<s,t> generated by certain 2 x 2 slice minors, and the ideal \tilde{I}<s,t> generated by certain 2 x 2 generalized minors. We describe the structure of these two ideals, with particular attention to the primary decomposition of I<s,t>, and provide the explicit list of minimal primes for large values of s. Finally we give some geometrical interpretations and generalise a theorem of Watanabe.
We give degree formulas for Grothendieck polynomials indexed by vexillary permutations and $1432$-avoiding permutations via tableau combinatorics. These formulas generalize a formula for degrees of symmetric Grothendieck polynomials which appeared in previous joint work of the authors with Y. Ren and A. St. Dizier. We apply our formulas to compute Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of classes of generalized determinantal ideals. In particular, we give combinatorial formulas for the regularities of all one-sided mixed ladder determinantal ideals. We also derive formulas for the regularities of cert…
We investigate Rees algebras and special fiber rings obtained by blowing up specialized Ferrers ideals. This class of monomial ideals includes strongly stable monomial ideals generated in degree two and edge ideals of prominent classes of graphs. We identify the equations of these blow-up algebras. They generate determinantal ideals associated to subregions of a generic symmetric matrix, which may have holes. Exhibiting Gröbner bases for these ideals and using methods from Gorenstein liaison theory, we show that these determinantal rings are normal Cohen-Macaulay domains that are Koszul, that …

This is a survey article on Gorenstein initial complexes of extensively studied ideals in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. These include defining ideals of Segre and Veronese varieties, toric deformations of flag varieties known as Hibi ideals, determinantal ideals of generic matrices of indeterminates, and ideals generated by Pfaffians of generic skew symmetric matrices. We give a summary of recent work on the construction of squarefree Gorenstein initial ideals of these ideals when the ideals are themselves Gorenstein. We also present our own independent results for the Segre, Ver…
We call an ideal in a polynomial ring robust if it can be minimally generated by a universal Gröbner basis. In this paper we show that robust toric ideals generated by quadrics are essentially determinantal. We then discuss two possible generalizations to higher degree, providing a tight classification for determinantal ideals, and a counterexample to a natural extension for Lawrence ideals. We close with a discussion of robustness of higher Betti numbers.
Generalized splines on a graph $G$ with edge labels in a commutative ring $R$ are vertex labelings such that if two vertices share an edge in $G$, the difference between the vertex labels lies in the ideal generated by the edge label. When $R$ is an integral domain, the set of all such splines is a finitely generated $R$-module $R_G$ of rank $n$, the number of vertices of $G$. We find determinantal conditions on subsets of $R_G$ that determine whether $R_G$ is a free module, and if so, whether a so called "flow-up class basis" exists.
A normal (respectively, graded normal) vector configuration $A$ defines the toric ideal $I_A$ of a normal (respectively, projectively normal) toric variety. These ideals are Cohen-Macaulay, and when $A$ is normal and graded, $I_A$ is generated in degree at most the dimension of $I_A$. Based on this, Sturmfels asked if these properties extend to initial ideals -- when $A$ is normal, is there an initial ideal of $I_A$ that is Cohen-Macaulay, and when $A$ is normal and graded, does $I_A$ have a Gröbner basis generated in degree at most $dim(I_A)$ ? In this paper, we answer both questions positive…
The critical ideals of a graph are the determinantal ideals of the generalized Laplacian matrix associated to a graph. In this article we provide a set of minimal forbidden graphs for the set of graphs with at most three trivial critical ideals. Then we use these forbidden graphs to characterize the graphs with at most three trivial critical ideals and clique number equal to 2 and 3.
We study the root polytope $\mathcal P_Φ$ of a finite irreducible crystallographic root system $Φ$ using its relation with the abelian ideals of a Borel subalgebra of a simple Lie algebra with root system $Φ$. We determine the hyperplane arrangement corresponding to the faces of codimension 2 of $\mathcal P_Φ$ and analyze its relation with the facets of $\mathcal P_Φ$. For $Φ$ of type $A_n$ or $C_n$, we show that the orbits of some special subsets of abelian ideals under the action of the Weyl group parametrize a triangulation of $\mathcal P_Φ$. We show that this triangulation restricts to a t…
We show that any surface of infinite type admits an ideal triangulation. Furthermore, we show that a set of disjoint arcs can be completed into a triangulation if and only if, as a set, they intersect every simple closed curve a finite number of times.
We present a unifying framework in which both the $ν$-Tamari lattice, introduced by Préville-Ratelle and Viennot, and principal order ideals in Young's lattice indexed by lattice paths $ν$, are realized as the dual graphs of two combinatorially striking triangulations of a family of flow polytopes which we call the $ν$-caracol flow polytopes. The first triangulation gives a new geometric realization of the $ν$-Tamari complex introduced by Ceballos, Padrol and Sarmiento. We use the second triangulation to show that the $h^*$-vector of the $ν$-caracol flow polytope is given by the $ν$-Narayana n…
If a (cusped) surface S admits an ideal triangulation T with no shears, we show an efficient algorithm to give S as a quotient of hypebolic plane by a subgroup of PSL(2, Z). The algorithm runs in time O(n log n), where n is the number of triangles in the triangulation T. The algorithm generalizes to producing fundamental groups of general surfaces and geometric manifolds of higher dimension.
The ideal (tagged resp.) triangulation of bounded surface with marked points are associated with skew-symmetric (skew-symmetrizable) exchange matrices. An algo- rithm is established to decompose the graph associated to such matrix. There are finite many graph with non-unique decomposition. We find all such graphs and their decompositions. In addition, we also find the associated ideal (tagged) triangulations to different decompositions.
